  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Constantine, released in 2005, and directed by Francis Lawrence! This film was really not what I was expecting, but in a good way! Keanu Reeves is just so great and I love that I'm watching more of his movies lately. Peter Stormare was a huge highlight for me though. Exorcism, demonic possession, religion... this has it! What a ride. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!

The "cigarette" at the end was Nicorette. It's a gum with nicotine in it that folks use to wean themselves off of cigarettes.
And one of the biggest changes between this and the comic is that in the comic, Constantine is basically Sting. The singer, not the wrestler. Blonde and very, very British.

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
It is such a treat to see someone reacting to it for the first time. I grew up in a heavily Catholic area and I have since disassociated from that. Still I find myself doing things that I know only Catholics do. I saw this once by myself . A week later I brought my cousin who is highly Catholic. He said that the images of hell in that movie were the most descriptive of his version of hell. I then brought my GF who is highly agnostic, and she said that was probably the most scared she had been when she saw what hell could be.
In New Mexico where I'm from they reported a drop in sales of this movie. But reported an increase in sales for the subsequent weeks. 😇

So the thing that got John damned in the comics is a bit of a rough topic, John tried to exercise a demon out of small girl early on by summoning a more powerful demon to drag it away BUT the demom he summoned he couldn't control and it took the girl back to Hell with it, as a result John was damned to Hell for accidentally damning the soul of a child to Hell

They ended on Aquais Transmission and the frog and cricket sound at the end of the song played for like 20 minutes or so while everyone filed out. It was a super cool way to end. It was also thier first bassist who had a super funky style. I remember him walking along this bridge on stage. 30 seconds to mars opened the show and everyone thought they sucked lol Glad to hear you got to meet them. If Not Now, When? is super underrated. Adolescents is amazing but I could listen to Thieves or Switchblade or almost anything on that album all day. Morning View has to be my favorite album though, every track is amazing and it's SO well put together if you listen to all the tracks in order from start to finish. The mixing is incredible and there are so many amazing drum parts and the vocals are awesome. Favorite song from the album is Nice to Know You (my next tattoo design has "To obtain a bird's eye is to turn a blizzard to a breeze" on it) but they're all great. And their whole discography has so many amazing songs! Redefine from SCIENCE is amazing and The Warmth from Make Yourself is what I used to sing to my little cousins when I rocked them to sleep.

Keanu loves to work with people he's worked with before.
For example: the doc that stitched him up in the first 2 John Wick movies is the same actor that plays in one of the Matrix movies.
From this movie, the actor playing Lucifer is in the beginning of John Wick 2 as the brother to the Russian antagonists from the first movie, who has John's car.
He was hilarious in telling the bodyguard about John killing someone with a pencil...
The twins were both psychics, so having one on the otherside of hell while the other stays in the earth realm makes the sisters a mirror for Mammon to walk through.
I also liked the parallels between the idea of Papa Midnight having a "No fighting on my grounds " policy like the Assassin hotels (The Continental) of John Wick would have later. I wonder was this an inspiration for that rule in the Wick series.

Hennessey the priest who died drowning in alcohol was a clairvoyant and an empath. He wasn't reading the papers, he was sensing the intention and the emotion and he found the one particular paper because Balthazar wanted him to. Papa Midnite is a practitioner of Vaudun, a Voodoo priest who runs his club as a neutral zone for both angels and demons. He has chosen neutrality in the skirmishes because that was his best chance for survival, especially considering the reputation that Vaudun/Voodoo has to the uninitated. What he was doing to Constantine was essentially black magic, as his intention was to harm or kill. The chair was the electric chair taken from the maximum security prison known as Sing Sing. It has a history of thousands of souls perishing to it and being trapped in the chair and as such it has powers of its own when invoked properly. Satan removed the tumors from John and healed his self inflicted wounds because if John got into heaven he'd escape Satan and be forever beyond his reach. The reason that "the sacrifice" is so important is because of one of the tenets of the bible which essentially boils down to greater love hath no man than this, that he give up his life for another. John, even knowing that it mean he would be dragged down to hell for his double suicide, did the selfless thing and saved an innocent soul from hell. Which is reflective of what Jesus did for the world in xtian mythology. He did not eat a cigarette, it was nicotine gum because he's trying to quit so that he doesn't commit suicide by cigarette and go down the same road.

After this movie there was a single season series, Constantine, oh what could have been with that show.
Peter Stormare. My favorite Satan. The white suit is an amazing touch.

    I'm a new subscriber and here's why:
I enjoyed your reaction and commentary at the end. It was interesting to see an atheists perspective on this one. And I agree Peter Stormare's Satan was mesmerizing. Your reaction to THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE (one of the 2 other movies where Keanu Reeves has a run in with Satan) would be of interest as well. And THE EXORCIST is of course recommended too.
A few others that possess non-preachy, covert religious themes, that I'd love to get your prespective on are ...
    PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
    O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU
    HACKSAW RIDGE
and TRUE GRIT (the Coen brother's 2010 remake, not the original)
And getting back to Peter Stormare, he's also unforgettably awesome in FARGO, So if you haven't already seen it you should definitely pencil it in.

This movie smartly gives one of my absolute favorite "what do you choose to believe?" moments in film.
God seemingly doesn't respond to Constantine praying for help. But immediately after, his eyes find the shards of glass. The shards were there in front of him the entire time, but his eyes only focus on them after he prays, as though an answer was revealed. Someone of faith may take that as God giving his response through divine inspiration : )
Or maybe Constantine just needed a quiet moment to think up yet another con on his own.

Constantine debuted in Swamp Thing and proved popular enough to be spun off in his own title. Just as Swampy kept the balance between humans and nature, John kept the earth in balance between Heaven and Hell. He was imagined to look like young a Sting but Keanu did a great job and I don't think the iconic blond hair would've translated well to the film.

That wasn't a cigarette he ate at the end, it was a piece of gum... for smokers, quitting is helped by replacing the cig with gum, part of the habit is the oral fixation, which is why most ex-smokers always have candy, toothpicks, etc.

I'm sorry you weren't feeling well at the time of your review. I hope you're feeling better by now. I was in the same boat as you when I first saw this. I had no idea it was based on a comic book. I just thought it was a cool, one-shot Keanu movie. I didn't even find out that it was based on a comic book until years after I first saw it. I do very much enjoy this one though. It was a fun watch with a few bits and lines that I remembered for years afterwards.
I've said before that I agree with your views on spoilers and I try to avoid even vague statements that might influence your reactions, but there are certainly times when it's hard. So, I will keep to simple statements. You will definitely be asked to react to "The Exorcist." I hope you have also been recommended "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and the entire "The Conjuring" franchise with all its related movies if you find that genre of films appealing. I might have to finally stop being lazy and submit them to your recommendation thingie myself just in case. However, there's part of me that is apprehensive about recommending a bunch of the "Exorcism" types of movies before you know whether or not you even enjoy the subgenre. Take care of yourself. Looking forward to "Avengers: Endgame!" ✌🤓

Constantine is one of my favorite comic series ever published (originally as Hellblazer). The movie is really good, but they took some liberties that bugged fans - comics Constantine is a British punk rocker and his stories draw from many different religions. Chas is, ironically, his one friend that never dies.
The other liberties they took were understandable. Comics Constantine is WAY more of an a-hole, which might have alienated audiences, and his early stories are absolutely for Mature Audiences Only. There's a few characters whose *names* would have earned the film an R rating

I liked this movie when it first came out, but over time, I've come to love it even more. I guess it's the way the story was presented. With aspects of religion being used that I've learned growing up. (I'm not religious, just stuff I picked up from books, movies, and general knowledge.)
I also noticed in the last few movies that you comment on the music and soundtracks. One of my favourite movies and soundtrack is Conan the Barbarian from 1982.
Action, fantasy, and without giving too much away, if you don't know who is in it, it wasn't long after they retired from their chosen profession to act full time. It wasn't their first movie or the one that got them really famous, but it was their first movie that was a hit. And the soundtrack is amazing. This movie is almost like an opera because of the music. And fun fact, it was used placement music for big movie trailers for nearly 20 years.

Check out (1995) The Prophecy starring Christopher Walken, Virginia Madsen. It's a story about the fight between angels of Hell and Heaven on Earth. I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil your experience. There are three Prophecy follow ups but IMO, the first is the best.
Another good film on this subject is the (2010) Legion.
(1999) The Ninth Gate starring Johnny Depp is also very good.
The series of films of the Hellraiser story are pretty good. They are particularly gory and have a H R Giger aesthetic in the S & M demon's (Cenobites) costumes and physical appearance.
For a comedic side to the demon/angel conflict check out (1999) Dogma. This has a huge cast of actors, comedians and singers; Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, Linda Fiorentino, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Salma Hayek, Bud Cort, Alan Rickman, Alanis Morissette and Jason Mewes.
Sticking with comedy is (1996) Michael. This has John Travolta as an angel. It's a funny and wholesome story.

Okay... not really an emoji kind of movie.
I don't really have anything to say. I'm glad you got to see your favorite band. I've never heard of them, but that's okay. All my life, I only owned a radio for one year, 1974-1975 (before my brother broke it.) I'm a little more familiar with the popular music from back then. Mostly, I listen to classical. The artists are less important to me than the music, itself. There are a few performances that I really like. But, mostly... it's just the music. I'm glad you got to see and talk with the folks in your favorite band.
Constantine? Well... it's okay. I do like Keanu in just about everything he does. If you want to see him and Rachel together again, Chain Reaction is really good. Different kind of movie, though. But a lot of quiet fun action, suspense, mystery, action... I don't know how to describe it. Suffice it to say that Morgan Freeman is also in it! Yay! I hope, should you decide to watch it, that you'll enjoy it.
About your 'spiritual' journey, I'm not going to comment, except to say that you will be in my thoughts and prayers. For what it's worth.
Well... I hope you get to feeling better. (Not sure when you were recording... Colds aren't any fun. Flu, less so. Stay hydrated. Chicken soup is best for that. (My grandmother made the BEST chicken soup. These days, I settle for Campbell's condensed Chicken and Stars, with the little stars, not those weird big pasta star outline things they tried to switch to for a while! It's very comforting when I'm stuffy and not feeling great. Yes... I sip on it from my Winnie the Pooh mug. I'm 62 years old. I trust you will not have a problem with that. :)

(I went to Catholic School) I thought it would be fully anti-religious. But it was a wonderful series of 'letters' 'written' by the archangels (including Lucifer) discussing their distaste of humanity, and disappointment with God for giving humanity something the angels could never have. Terrible title of a book, because it alienated the audience it was meant for. Anyway, I am an atheist these days, but that book fills in all my knowledge for movies like this, and all the myths behind stories like this, and that goofy TV show, "Supernatural"

Nice reaction, Kaiielle! I like this movie alot. Great effects, & I like seeing Keanu play someone who's kind of a jerk. He's not really interested in people per se, he just wants to somehow make it to heaven. I think the multiple instances of the "almost kiss" is supposed to illustrate just how uninterested in involvement he is. It took me a couple watches to better understand the dynamics of all the characters.
One complaint I have about the movie, though, is they took Gabriel, who IS a REAL angel (yes, I mean REAL), & made it a part-evil being...??? I guess they couldn't think up a novel name for that being, so they chose Gabriel?? It's just lazy, dumb writing in that instance. Angels are positive beings who all have particular tasks assigned to them. They can't deviate from their tasks, & do not have a will of their own other than what God created them to do.
Hope you get well soon! 🤧🤗

One of those “better than it has any right to be” movies, I enjoyed it when it came out. The prop work is amazing, the weaving of mythology is great, it’d be cool to see Keanu take it up again. And others have said it, but Peter Stormare brings that kind of weird energy to just about every performance of his I’ve ever seen; he does not disappoint, one of my favorite character actors. His white suit as Lu is fitting as Lucifer is a fallen angel in Christian mythology.
Also, I’m so jealous that you haven’t seen The Matrix…. Hope you see it soon. If you decide to watch all of them, please include The Animatrix in your plans. When the original film was as successful as it was, Warner Brothers gave the Wachowskis a blank check to try whatever they wanted for sequels and one of those experiments was to get in touch with some of the premier animation houses in Japan and have them do shorts around the periphery of he main plot. It’s a fascinating collection of stuff that really helps build the world and also showed people like me who hadn’t seen a lot of anime at the time a peek into a world I never knew existed.

This movie is soo good. I'm so embarrassed to even think about how I reacted to this movie as a 15 year old when it came out. How I attempted to style myself, and how I acted in the wake of seeing this movie are pretty hilarious to think about now.
Even though I'm not really religious, like at all, I seriously love the Abrahamic mythology in this movie, and how they just make all this occult stuff from theology a reality. It seriously works for me as a setting, and as a mythology. I would watch so much more content from the Constantine universe.
Kind of different tone all together, but somewhat similar in the bringing Abrahamic mythology and Occult stuff to reality that I would highly, highly recommend is Good Omens. That show is absolutely amazing, and the book is even better. Cannot beat Terry Pratchett. I think you would seriously love it, if you haven't seen/read it already.
