About 10-15 years ago I could throw t shirts, Jean's, sweaters all into the washer and dryer and have no issues. They lasted years. Quality in fabrics has gone way down imo. I dont think walking sitting and doing normal things should cause clothes to wear out. They should be made not to do that. Seems like everything pills now, I've even seen shirts in the store pilling ...on the rack...being sold.
While the price are still the same from decade ago right? Welp, this is the dillema of what i dubbed as "average joe" store has. Wonder why also tech/anything you buy this day for what it worthed like 10+yrs ago? Turns out now it was sub-par and doesn't last you lifetime like it used to? Well it's caused by the inflation. And the problem is that folks at middle to low class already knew the generalized price but, outdated ones. If "average store" wanted to keep open they have to do these measure.. if don't? well nobody wanted to buy from them because "it's too expensive" oh fyi the good, long lasting jeans now'll cost ya $300 right at H&M/Levi store
so true
I’m here trying to understand why my favorite pieces of clothing look like hell after the first wash.
I’ve tried everything to prevent it.
I’m starting to strongly believe this is a result of fabric choices.
Ie. Luck Brand Tee shirts are soft and comfortable but are the best example.
I’ve literally threw some away after the first wash the pilled so badly. Especially around the collar.
Any advice or comments appreciated
@@jantyyaqoub2132 best advice I can give you is to wash everything on warm and hang dry EVERYTHING, heat is the enemy when it comes to making cloths last
Shirts always shrink even when I hang them up. As soon as I pull them out of the washer. I wash everything on cold.
Really glad my $80 Lululemon shirt started pilling after only a month :)
Are you actually?

Good information. Usually what wash cycle to use is on the tag. I realized I was washing my polos in a normal cycle with cold water, when most stated a gentle cycle. Thanks again for the helpful information. I realized it was user error that contributed to some clothes pilling.
Glad it was helpful!
i worked for kohl's clothing store for 9 years and i have noticed clothing quality had gone down hill over time years
It’s funny that people comment about how good the clothes used to be 10 years ago. I have a clothing business. When I offer the higher quality jumpers/ sweaters for higher price, people go for the cheaper range that pills. You pay for what you get. The cost of living and everything else is too high nowadays
I am learning more about fabrics and am willing to pay more, could you tell us what to look for in a garment that won't pill? Is it the type of fabric?
@@kimwoldnot op but cotton and low quality polyester are usually the culprits for pilling. knits/cashmere garments pill as well IF they aren't good quality or washed properly (cold, gentle, hand wash, use woolite/gentle detergent, etc). if you want to see if a garment will pill, you can rub it for a minute or two in a corner that's not super visible and see if the fibers start pilling up/looking different than it did before.
you can tell a garment is good quality when
1. thread count- the higher the number of threads per square inch, the greater the density and strength of the fabric. meaning a good quality fabric.
2. good construction- make sure all the edges/seams are finished and not left raw, raw edges will cause the garment to fray and deteriorate way faster. are the buttons sewed on in a durable way? if something could be ripped off by just pulling it, it's terrible quality. also look to see the stitching is straight and not wonky.
3. washability- this can only be found out after a garment is bought unfortunately but the ability for it to be washed without the colors fading or bleeding and the garment to look the way it did before it came into the washer.
4. type of fabric- natural fibers will always be higher quality than polyester and other synthetics. but they still need to be tested by rubbing, because cotton is a natural fiber but susceptible to pilling. look for silks, rayon, wool, linen, hemp, cashmere, etc. just make sure to wash them properly. if you prefer synthetics, then just make sure you are testing for quality with the rub test I mentioned before and just feeling and looking at the fabric. make sure it is not see through, try to crumple it up in your hand to see if it wrinkles easily, etc.
5. wearability & fit- does the garment feel good on your skin? does it fit you well? is it breathable & cool? is it warm & cozy? is it something you can wear often & combine with other clothes/accessories from your closet? what are your needs and how does this garment fit those needs?
Here is a mystery I have a brand new sweat suit I have only put on one time, I wash and dry it and it came out absolutely peppered with pills! I'm baffled about that!
I keep telling my husband that I swear front loaders are way harder on clothes, because I never had this problem with clothes pilling after the first wash till we switched to a front loader.
Wow, I learned so much from this. Rather than throwing clothes away I can actually save them by doing these steps.
Happy to help!
I bought 2 super soft blankets from Big Lots and when I washed the one with my other little throw blanket the pills came off all over my little blanket and now they are permanently attached to the edges. They will be donated. Don’t want the hassle of them ruining my other stuff more.
My favorite shirt is a pill popper, I don’t think its going to stop

Really informative thanks. What are your views on dryer balls? Do they cause pills?
designer and name brands are all for profit, low quality high price.. its sad
I'm not sure on the answer but they are designed for helping not to cause Pilling, or in UK we call it piling...sounds different.
Quality of clothes has gone down dramatically. I believe it's just cheap quality such as man made fabrics that's being used heavily and some companies are just being cheap
Can you please link a detergent that u recommend?
Ok I have 2 huge new blankets and the pills are everywhere. Now what? How do I get rid of them?
