South Africa has to be super strict on travelers who are coming into the country with minors. Just in December a Zimbabwean couple who were travelling into SA by bus were arrested for trafficking 14 undocumented Zimbabwean children into SA. This is not the first time that foreigners are caught trafficking undocumented children into the country. Its a serious problem and South Africans have been demanding that the government protect children and put an end to this. SA is huge on protecting Children's Rights. Its actually in your children's best interest that our police are as strict as they are.
Wow looks like we're on a similar journey. I'm from Ft. Lauderdale but in TZ right now and I was going to take the train to Lusaka in November. I still plan to visit one day but right now the plan is to go to South Africa next month. South Africa is not and will never be America. Your conflating being developed with being American. South Africa is African first. Modernity and tradition coexist beautifully here hence we still have our cultures and languages in tact.
