I think Ozzy and Dio's relationship was a fascinating one. Even though there was a lot of bad things said, there was also a mutual respect displayed at times. In the Dio compilation album, it has a note about each song. And Dio says that the King of Rock N' Roll song was a tribute to Ozzy...and I dont think it was a bad tribute. Dio also told Eric Blair that Ozzy was always a good friend and supportive when he was solo, but he would bash him when he got back with Sabbath. Ozzy on the other hand, would start dedicating one of his songs (I believe Road to Nowhere) to Ronnie after his death. He also said that he got to hang out with him some before his death at the metal awards. But also later claimed they weren't that great of friends, but was a phenomenal talent. Wendy Dio for her part told Jericho they were acquaintances, but just didnt really travel in the same circles...which is just plain ridiculous. Honestly, I think all the issues boil down to 1 person and we all know who that is. It seems like no one has a problem with Ozzy as much as they do Sharon. She done the most petty things like keeping the band from using the name Sabbath, to calling venues that Heaven and Hell played at and threatened to never let Ozzy play there again. Hell, she contacted Vinnie Appice in the middle of Dio tour and offered him an insane amount of money to be a "backup drummer" for Bill Ward...and then of course he just set on the whole tour doing nothing, because Bill didn't need a backup. She did all that just to put Dio in a bind in the middle of a tour. She is one of the shittiest people in music.
I think Ozzy started it all early on just after Ronnie took over Sabbath. Ozzy (perhaps still disgruntled over his dismissal from the band) was claiming that the band was "no longer Sabbath" and other meek derogatory remarks. Sure he had the right to express his opinion, but it still sounded like sour grapes. Sure it was not the Sabbath everyone was used to. How could it be without Ozzy? Dio's backlash was harsh but much to the point. Ozzy was in lousy shape when Dio took over and probably couldn't carry much of a tune for a while, doped and liquored up as he was. Dio was kind of caught up in the media hype and had to respond but Ozzy should have just said something to the effect of "the band no longer has the same feel but that it will work itself out". This probably would have prevented any animosity between them. Ronnie's talents were accomplished long before joining Sabbath. Ozzy would or should have known the talent Ronnie would bring to the band. Too bad it had to happen that way. It should have always been simply two great singers producing two great eras for the greatest heavy metal band of all time!
Excuse me, but maybe you can clear up a couple things for me. When Black Sabbath split, or Ozzy got the boot, if you want to look at it that way, the rest of the guys weren't going to use the name. That's what they said. So, Sharon hurt them, how? And giving Appice a chunk of change to sit on his butt and watch them play, also, hurt them, how? What happens if a 20,000 stadium gig sells out and the drummer kicks it rolling his Mercedes on the freeway? "Oh, sorry ppl." Maybe Ward rold her, hey, you want this thing to fly past April you better get someone in here. I'm gone. I'm outa here. How'd that screw Dio? Come out of his paycheck?

The thing that is not mentioned about Sharrons antics is that it screwed over the audience multiple times. These people paid money to see the show. Not some hurt feelings wife running her face and turning the bands equipment off.
I saw Ronnie James Dio twice with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Still the best singer I've ever seen. Love Black Sabbath, never saw them live. Artists should learn that there is nothing to be gained by critising other artists -- The Beatles taught us that, but the lesson seems to have lost its message.
Dio didn't do those shows because, as he told the other members of Sabbath, Ozzy and Sharon were not really planning on having Ozzy retire. He was right. Then Sharon slipped in the clause that Black Sabbath couldn't use the name without Ozzy anymore when they did the reunion album.
I thought the decision to not use the Sabbath moniker was made by the band alone. I didn't know that Sharon had anything to do with it. Not that I'm doubting you, just that I wasn't aware of it.

I've heard that for several years too. I guess Van Halen didn't need to open for anyone! It might have worked had they put Dave on guitar and had Eddie sing!
I saw Sabbath & Van Halen in Cincinnati. Van Halen absolutely rocked & the audience went wild. Sabbath waited over an hour to take the stage. Finally the lights went down & the fog rolled in with ominous music...no Sabbath for about five minutes. They finally ambles on stage & gave the worst performance I ever witnessed. The crowd was constantly leaving especially when Iommi broke out with an endless jazz solo...
I was born in 1979 and when I heard in the nineties that Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off the stage during my birth year I was shocked. Now I'm not shocked because while I love Black Sabbath a million times more than Van Halen, VH's debut buried the NSD album.

Sabbath weren’t scared. They gave all kind of upcoming bands their big break. Boston Kiss and many other big names in the seventies opened up for Sabbath before they got big. They were good like that The bad part was they were being influenced by those bands and they radically changed their approach the last 2 albums w/ Ozzy. Tony meeting Brian May was another turning point too.

In the early 2000s I was waiting for the parents and kids to show up at the Sunday A.A. meeting where I had provided childcare for years. The A.A. folk gathered and got their coffee and found their seats and the kids were showing up. I looked to the East - there stood a guy, about 70 feet away, in a blue track suit standing alone, staring to the south. "Looks like Ozzy", I thought, having sees Sabbath in 1974. It was Ozzy, standing, staring, waiting for the meeting to start. Maybe 2000. All of the other famous rockers in A.A. made a big deal of their celebrity but not Ozzy.
Dude who I was in my first band with ended up in A Life Once Lost and we loved Sabbath. He got to tour with Ozzy and maybe even Sabbath on a few Ozzfests. Our band was better, but the egomaniacal bassist whose house we played at "kicked him out."
I was at the Ozzfest when the power went out on Iron Maiden. Everyone knew Sharon pulled the plug. I think the eggs came from a helicopter I kept seeing landing behind the main stage. I don't think any supermarket would be open within 20 miles of that place.
I saw black sabbath when DIO was up front. At one point of the show i looked around the coliseum and the entire coliseum was in like a trance. No one moving, no one jumping around. All faces staring at the stage. All eyes on the band. As if hypnotized. it was pretty damn weird to say the least. Ive been to dozens and dozens of concerts from 1978 up until just a few years ago and that has never happened but the one time. And no, i wasnt trippin.
During their tour with Black Sabbath, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony told a story about how he came across Ozzy passed out on a commode in a bathroom. Said “He wasn’t bothering anyone so I left him there.” Lol.
Here's the interview with Ronnie James Dio on the Eric Blair show where he's talking about rejoining Sabbath for the 1992 Dehumanizer album & tour, and the situation about refusing to open for Ozzy ua-cam.com/video/SVQ76xqJY0A/v-deo.html And I don't blame Dio AT All for refusing to do that concert. I've only seen Black Sabbath twice in concert. The first time was February 1994 at the State Theater in Detroit, MI on the Cross Purposes tour with the Iommi-Butler-Tony Martin (vocals) Bobby Rondinelli (drums) and Geoff Nichols (keyboards) line-up, with Morbid Angel & Motorhead as opening bands. The 2nd time I saw Black Sabbath, or "Heaven & Hell" as they were calling the band at the time, since Dio was back in the band again for the 3rd time was in March 2007 in London, Ontario Canada at the John Labatt arena with the Iommi-Butler-Dio-Vinny Appice lineup, with Down & Megadeth as opening bands. EVERY singer Black Sabbath EVER had: (Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, Ray Gillen, Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin) ALL could sing better than Ozzy ever could-with his weak, pathetic out of tune voice. When I Saw the band that last time in 2007 over in Canada, with Dio singing for them only about two years before he died-Dio still had a more powerfull in-tune voice than Ozzy ever had. Just listen to some of Black Sabbaths more recent Live concerts with Ozzy singing for them-What a pathetic joke! After that listen to ANY of Black Sabbaths other vocalists singing Live with Sabbath. I think you get the picture!
Daisley and Lee Kerslake (awesome drummer formerly and later back with Uriah Heep, deceased 2020) got really shafted by Sharon. Ozzy just went along with the ride I guess. Not good. Kerslake finally got some reward though only through the appeal of a dying man seeking to claim his unlawfully denied gold record status (or something to that effect) for his short time with Ozzy (albums: Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman). Not impressed!

I love some of Sabbath's music. Having said that, I absolutely love the Dio-fronted albums, "Heaven and Hell" and "The Mob Rules." Dio lit a fire under Iommi and Butler. Both great musicians, but they lost a step in the late 70's. Dio gave the band new life and even Ozzy made his best music in the Randy Rhoads era.
I agree with all of it but a lot have said over the years that Iommi and Butler were not even on H&H. I think Tony has said on a couple occasions that he dont even remember making the album. Personally, I think it's one of the best albums made no matter where it came from.
Bad luck after Ozzy. Dio comes in but only lasts a couple of years (with killer albums of course!). Then Ian Gillan of Deep Purple fame comes in and does a fantastic and highly underrated album with his brilliance - only to jump ship for the DP reformation in '84. Good vocalists followed (Ray Gillen, Tony Martin) but it never was the same after IG in '83 even with Dio's short return in 1990.
The more I hear about Ozzy and Sharon the less I like them. They treat people like crap..well mostly she does and he is just a stooge who goes along with her.

"Oh, sorry ppl."
Maybe Ward rold her, hey, you want this thing to fly past April you better get someone in here. I'm gone. I'm outa here. How'd that screw Dio? Come out of his paycheck?

I saw Ronnie James Dio twice with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Still the best singer I've ever seen. Love Black Sabbath, never saw them live. Artists should learn that there is nothing to be gained by critising other artists -- The Beatles taught us that, but the lesson seems to have lost its message.
Loved ozzy and ronnie james dio.

Just want to confirm what you said about Van Halen on a tour with Black Sabbath. I saw one of those concerts. Van Halen blew them off the stage. It was a REALLY stupid idea for Black Sabbath to have Van Halen opening up for them. Van Halen was like on speed and Black Sabbath was like on downers.
Good for you Ronnie..

I was at the Ozzfest when the power went out on Iron Maiden. Everyone knew Sharon pulled the plug. I think the eggs came from a helicopter I kept seeing landing behind the main stage. I don't think any supermarket would be open within 20 miles of that place.

Ozzy just don’t wanna stop
The video should be called "People that Sharon got jealous of, sabotaged, and damaged relations with".

Ozzy never even paid Bob daisley or the drummer
Daisley and Lee Kerslake (awesome drummer formerly and later back with Uriah Heep, deceased 2020) got really shafted by Sharon. Ozzy just went along with the ride I guess. Not good. Kerslake finally got some reward though only through the appeal of a dying man seeking to claim his unlawfully denied gold record status (or something to that effect) for his short time with Ozzy (albums: Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman).
You sir, are DEAD ON with that post. 🤘
