  • Closed Guard is alive and well with lots of submission and sweep opportunities. This video is a step beyond fundamentals, but still plenty of application for all levels of guard play. Dennis Cregier and I compare some notes on some of our most successful guard control and attack strategies. Between Pretzel Guard and Gubber Guard, this video has quite a few things to add to your arsenal and improve your closed guard systems.

The first guard isA guard from Flower sweep perhaps ; The second guard is beginning with William's guard which is coming from Nino Shembri's omoplata attacks with wrapping lapel variation . Thanks for sharing professor .

Good stuff. I like to play with the gi like this as well. I'm about the same size as Keenan so I'll give this a shot the next time we're rolling gi in class. Thank you! Happy New Year!

I have been calling the second example the “William’s Guard” for several years rightly or wrongly.

William’s Guard is the best name for it, in my opinion and I should have mentioned that on here. Shawn William’s is credited with originally systematizing this type of guard.
