One of my cats decided to just ignore my dogs. He's quite big for a normal cat, and since he realised they wanted to play and not attack, it seemd like not doing anything was the best option. Of course if they start to annoy him too much he just slaps them and continues with whatever he was doing.

Humans are bad at judging cat's intelligence because we tend to overrate things that we can train or that behave how we want them too or that read our social cues well. Dogs are very good at those things, cats aren't. A cat that won't do tricks for treats might still be hard to keep out of the kibble because it enjoys the game of stealing and learns how to overcome whatever it's butler throws at it.
Some dogs are really clever too in ways that aren't relevant to human interests, but their better ability to read humans and to be trained plays a role in why people tend to assume they're superior.

Speaking from my step dad's hunting experience. He once lost a hunting beagle to a wild cat that took the dog by surprise. The cat waiting for the dog to be near water then pounced on it from above and drowned the dog. The dog was there for birds, not the cat... but to the cat it was in it's territory and had to go.

    • @DarkKnightofHeaven
      @DarkKnightofHeaven 2 роки тому +17

That can be due to bad socialization. A full front direct approach is probably the most aggressive thing you can do to a dog outside of actual violence. A dogs weapons are in his front, so if you come on that strong from the front it freaks a lot of dogs out because it means a lack of fear. Most animals actually have a general fear of being directly approached by strangers. My girl dog does not take kindly to overly assertive dogs, it's ultimately poor manners in the dog world.
Well trained dogs know not to come on too strong. A lot of people like their dogs 'boundless personality' even though its puppy behavior and dogs are the same as humans, you don't get to act like your seven when your twenty three, unless you want to get punched in the mouth.

There's this other UA-cam channel called wildciencias which basically makes animal matchups and interesting facts. And the British narrator on that channel used evidence to show how the different body structures of cats and dogs can support a genetic rivalry between the two carnivores. Some matchups were Wolf vs cougar, wolf vs snow leopard. And while the wolf proved how canines aside from the Jaguar typically have stronger jaws and superior endurance, it lost both matchups to those felines simply because cats are more built for fighting than dogs.

The dog and the male cat bonded really well, but the female cat hated them both. The dog would try to be friendly, but always got a slap for it. She and the male cat just avoided each other after she realised he would fight back. She was really affectionate with humans though. I think she just saw the other two as intruding on her territory.

to be fair, dogs are inherently pack animals that we domesticated cause they were useful to us.
cats domesticated themselves cause they could get extra food AND occasional cuddles if they let us get close.
most cats that are kept as pets aren't trained at all and get a ton of freedom to roam around, making it so they keep their individualism and occasionally end up in situations where they need to defend themselves.
on the other hand, dogs that are kept as pets are usually somewhat trained (or highly trained) and usually stick to their handler instead of being allowed to roam the neighborhood.
Makes quite a lot of sense that cats would regain a bit more of their 'feral' traits, when they were never really bred to be trained etc (and usually just randomly breed with neighborhood cats) whereas dogs are usually consciously bred to look for certain traits and diminish others. dogs used to be work-animals/companions, whereas there was never a 'need' to train cats. so trainability wasn't an important trait to breed for.

It wasn't just due to cat that some of these species of dogs when extinct. Have you ever heard the saying "it's a dog eat dog world"? Not only were they competing with cats for food they were also competing with their own kind. Over food, territory, dominance, etc. Cats unlike dogs were able to respect rival cat prides territorys and there was less conflict among cats than dogs at that time. So it was kinda because of "dog eat dog" that lead to their demise.

7:35 the two fingers gesture is actually from the English medieval period. During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), English Longbow men who were captured by the French often had their middle and index finger cut off before prisoner exchanges to ensure that they wouldn’t be able to shoot a longbow again. So when English troops passed or defeated French troops from then on out, they would brandished their index and middle finger jeeringly to the French to show that they still had their fingers. It basically meant “look, I’ve got both my fingers and I’m gunna use them to shoot arrows at you”. It was an antagonistic gesture. Idk how tf you thought the Aussie’s came up with that.

I’m Aussie and we just stick our middle finger up, the two fingers comes from Britain when French knights or men at arms captured English long bowman they’d cut off their index and middle finger so they couldn’t work a bow anymore, bows were made from yew or ash trees so remaining English long bowman would stick those fingers up to show French opposition they could still pull their bowstrings or “Pluck yew” and you see where the term evolved from there.

I must say the video is quite good, but since I had both dogs and cats, there was once that we got a puppy and at the same time we rescued a baby cat. From start they snuggled together every night and during day they played together. They loved to wrestle with each other as they grew up, dog even realized the cat did his things at the sand box and tried more than twice to do the same.
Different stories everywhere, it seems pretty normal that my dog barks to cats during a walk but at home plays and sleeps with his cat friend.

My pets must be broken :P
I have 2 dogs, 3 cats and they all adore each other. My husky (and huskies are well-known for a high prey drive) will kidnap cats... to mother them. And the cats seem to be totally fine with this. She is constantly abducting my friends' cats and the cats are refusing to leave the warm husky cuddles. The husky even *trains* the cats to give her dog treats, which the cats seem more than happy to feed their new "mom." For a year, she even took care of a blind and deaf kitten, who wanted nothing to do with anyone but the husky, his big protective mommy.
All of the cats are so obsessed with my dogs, I've had to harness and leash train them (which took approx 5 minutes, they seemed to realize that leashes = time with the dogs outside). They follow the husky like little ducklings, it takes absolutely no effort on my part to walk them, I just walk the dogs like normal and the cats follow her.
When it comes to other dogs, it's no issue, either, because they're so relaxed and used to dogs at this point. Because the cats don't freak out, the other dogs don't freak out.
The only time there's ever any ever stress amongst the pets is when they're separated from each other, not the other way around :P

As an Australian, I can tell you that the reverse 'peace sign' is not the equivalent to the middle finger known as the bird any more.
Some older Aussies do equate the V-sign as the bird, but it comes from an English influence such as Television shows, in a time when Australia only had like 5 channels and 4 or them were British and the last one was the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) which is owned by the Australian Government of which was heavily influenced by the U.K. at the time.
The gesture itself comes from England, and was developed over many wars with the French from King William’s War of 1688-1697, to the Anglo-French War of 1778 - 1783. English soldiers and especially archers who were captured by the French, would have cut their index and middle fingers cut off, as to be les of a threat if they were to escape captivity or slavery and return home.
However, as time progressed and this gracious 'hospitality' of the French become more and more known by the English soldiers the Anglos would flip them off with the V-sign to insult the French soldiers and tell them "Ha, still got my fingers, and Imma shoot you with an arrow c@%t!".
The insulting gesture to the French then became normalised with England amongst common folk and even nobles. Eventually the reason behind the gesture changed from a taunting sarcastic threat, to a common "Up yours, mate!"
    Thus concludes my ted talk.
