To regain his standing in Hollywood Edward Dmytryk, one of the Ten, when released from Danbury snitched on the director of this film, John Berry.
Dmytryk fingered Berry as a CPUSA member of many years' standing. Berry had to work in France and England until the 1960s. Dmytryk the stool pigeon would direct such movies as 'The Caine Mutiny' (which upholds the need to obey authority even if your ship may get wrecked) and 'The Carpetbaggers'.

As is briefly stated in the commentary: the gavel-banging 'answer the question.. that's not the question' Rep. J Parnell Thomas, chairman of HUAC, was jailed for theft. He served time in the same CT correctional facility as some of the Ten.
Two of them came across him one day when he was clearing weeds in the yard and they were cutting the grass. Thomas shouted 'Hey, commies, I see you got your sickle, where's your hammer?'... to which one replied: 'And I see you're still doing what you did in Washington- picking up chickensh*t.'

Funny enough, the guy who played that character ( Sterling Hayden ) was accused by HUAC ( House of Un-American Committee ) as being a sympathetic person toward communist " infiltration " as far back as 1947. He was " ousted " by Ronald Reagan, which is even stranger ( Reagan was head of the SAG-Screen Actors Guild-at that time ).

Actually in the case of the Soviet Union it was their excuse to have a dictatorship of the proletariat (or dictatorship) because they felt they knew what the people wanted (lol). However, if you can honestly state that the US government is not statist in REALITY then more power to you. You have basically only two parties that can win power, that are really pretty much the same. And can do what they want when they want.

Watch Foreman's movie High Noon to understand the importance of standing up for your principles of what is right. Do not crumble like many people who betrayed their friends and co workers by naming names. Don't let fear speak for what is right. Read the book High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic Hardcover - February 21, 2017 by Glenn Frankel or listen to Fresh Air December 2022. "It's one of the most revered movies of Hollywood's golden era. Starring screen legend Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in her first significant film role, High Noon was shot on a lean budget over just thirty-two days but achieved instant box-office and critical success. It won four Academy Awards in 1953, including a best actor win for Cooper. And it became a cultural touchstone, often cited by politicians as a favorite film, celebrating moral fortitude.
Yet what has been often overlooked is that High Noon was made during the height of the Hollywood blacklist, a time of political inquisition and personal betrayal. In the middle of the film shoot, screenwriter Carl Foreman was forced to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities about his former membership in the Communist Party. Refusing to name names, he was eventually blacklisted and fled the United States. (His co-authored screenplay for another classic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, went uncredited in 1957.) Examined in light of Foreman's testimony, High Noon's emphasis on courage and loyalty takes on deeper meaning and importance.
In this book, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Frankel tells the story of the making of a great American Western, exploring how Carl Foreman's concept of High Noon evolved from idea to first draft to final script, taking on allegorical weight. Both the classic film and its turbulent political times emerge newly illuminated."

Yes, our freedom to be fascists. In my country, we welcome political discourse that includes all points of view, and all enjoy equal protection under our constitution. You have two options: 1) Work within the system to amend our constitution so that only ideologies of which you approve are legally permitted, or 2) Get out if you don't like our rules. You don't belong in a country that guarantees freedom. You want a country that can make it a crime to disagree with you.
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE! We must face the risks that come with freedom or resign ourselves to lives as cowards under oppression.

And the public is uneducated, thanks to the six media conglomerates who control 90% of the people's airways. We need to speak truth to power and get out and bring information to people who have been treated by both political parties as pariahs. We need to speak up and change the direction that we are headed or there won't be any direction to head. There is no time to waste. We don't seem to learn from history.

Personally, I don't think that the CPUSA received funding by the U.S.S.R. because there is NO evidence to support it. As for whether the U.S.S.R. "used" leftists and CPUSA members to "spread propaganda" throughout Hollywood, I think that is little to prove that anymore than the right-wing forces spreading anti-Communist propaganda farther and wider than Hollywood. As for the Soviet Union being "one of the largest homicidal regimes" in world history, that was because Stalin was a BAD Communist. If the Soviet Union had BETTER leaders, then it would have been a more benevolent socialist nation.

Lori Quaresimo. The CPUSA, despite, at this time being a conspiratorial arm of a hostile foreign dictatorship, was not illegal during at this time (in a similar situation this would seem unlikely to happen today). So, it was not a normal political party - it was funded by the Kremlin, it did the bidding of Stalin's secret police, including illegal underground espionage etc. This is why the CP was seen differently and investigations took place to find how far its infiltration had gone in America. Certainly there was major government penetration and there were things going on in the film industry, especially in relation to the craft unions and screen writers guild. "Ten" leader John Howard Lawson was the CPUSA man in Hollywood and probably its most important organizer. He was a died in he wool Stalinist. The "10" were not imprisoned by the committee, congressional committees can't do that - but by the courts. And it was for contempt of congress, not for being communists they went to prison for a year.

After all, it was Nikita Khrushchev and others in the Soviet Union that had DENOUNCED Stalin for what he did in NOT having followed the direction of the country based on the philosophy of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin as well. I also want to add that IF someone like Leon Trotsky had been the leader of the U.S.S.R., things would have turned out much differently in order to build socialism in the right direction. Furthermore, I NEVER forgave people like Edward Dmytryk for claiming to have "seen the light" because of the alleged "truth" about the so-called "Communist conspiracy" in the United States anyway.

You signed on for Stalinism and were subject to party discipline enforced by agents of Stalin. If you failed to break with the CPUSA you were serving the interests of Stalin and Stalinism during that period. Those who decided to join the Trotskyite opposition, or like independent Marxists such as Jay Lovestone and many others, who broke with the CPUSA you were not subject to Stalinist discipline. The Hollywood 10 refused to break with Stalinism and were by definition agents of Stalin.
Someone like Dmytryk finally realized he was subject to that discipline and wisely broke with the H10. The likes of Trumbo and the others adopted a cynical line to promote the Stalinist line during the hearings. Even naive, non communist liberals like Bogart and Bacall finally realized what the 10 and the CP legal team were up to and backed away from them. @@robertpolanco1973 The issue at hand concerns the era of the Hollywood 10 and the CPUSA in 1947. As my comments clearly state the CPUSA was a Stalinist party and promoted those hideous ends during this period. Your hypotheses about alternative universes involving a non existent humanistic communism have no relevance to the reality of Communism in the 30s and 40s. These communists, who remained loyal to the Stalinist CPUSA, were in fact the worst of the worst, because they had been enlightened to the nature of Soviet communism from the experiences of the imposed Ukraine famine in 1932, the Soviet purge trials of 1938, the Stalinist wiping out of the anti Stalinist POUM anarchists and other Marxists in the Republican side in Spain. And to top it off the Nazi Soviet Pact in 1939. So,to remain a member of the CPUSA during this period was an act of incredible moral degeneracy. @@michaelm6948 Well, EXCUSE ME for having to deal with your pathetic assessment of the old CPUSA of the past, and therefore, it is unfortunate that you only pointing out about whether "The Hollywood Ten" had been Stalinists that only happened IN THE PAST! As for your rejection of what you think were my "hypotheses," I seriously DO NOT accept what you stated when I really meant about what Stalin did were serious MISTAKES in being so-called "policies" in the Soviet Union anyway! After all, I truly believed what Khrushchev stated in his so-called "secret speech" in 1956 about Stalinist crimes and such. Other than that, the CPUSA did NOT remain a "Stalinist" organization AFTER the Khrushchev "secret speech" of 1956, and therefore, the attitudes of party members that also remained had changed, too, in spite of others that had left the party. So while I had been aware of Stalin's crimes that you mentioned from when he was around as dictator of the Soviet Union, it was only FROM THE PAST. I might even also add that IF Leon Trotsky had been the Soviet leader, I am sure that he would NOT have committed the same MISTAKES as what Stalin did anyway!

Fred Bazoo - The reason why they thought being Communist was viewed as being a traitor was because the United States wasn't built on Communism. Communism is an ideology that a society lives by. The United States felt threatened that if enough people became Communists it would overthrow our government and become a Communist country. However, I do believe that if someone wants to belong to a certain political party they ought to have the freedom to do so. At the time when these people were being tried and thrown in jail I really don't think enough of the public would have voted for our country to be Communists being so many people were against it. In my opinion it was a false threat. There wouldn't be enough Communists to overthrow our government. But even if there were that would have been what the majority of the people wanted. The government tried to have it both ways and you can't. You either give the people their freedoms or you don't. Just because the majority of the government doesn't agree with you isn't a reason to take your liberties and freedoms away. Of course there a lot of what the government does that doesn't make any sense. People in this country though should know there is a difference between Communism and Socialism. People in this country are accusing Obama to be a Socialist not a Communist like Conor1916 commented.

It goes without saying that xenophobia and racism permeate today's rightwing conservative movement [You need look only as far as BIRTHERISM and the rise of characters like Roy Moore and Donald Trump]. Well, whether it's pro or con, too many films give ONLY one side of the story, like this one. What we did NOT know, is that in hindsight, communists were actively killing by the MILLIONS, at that time, and during PEACETIME. And so, in hindsight, considering the threat communism posed (compare millions of deaths with say, 60,000 American lives in Vietnam), it's not even debatable communism was monstrous. And consider the answers these people gave here... that it is against our constitution to go against communism. In other words, communists should be allowed to use our laws, that no communist would enjoy under communism, to destroy our country. Again, in hindsight, we most likely did the right thing here, although we can never know what would have happened if such hearings with such consequences never occurred. If we could, we might thank God this occurred.
I don't think anyone would argue that this short film is communist propaganda. And, it should be shown, so people can see that propaganda is anything but new.

(I do not mean the use of the word liberty which has been so widespread in the United States since the war began, but the real word spelt the same way), and the real Russian realizes this and suspects that Americans think as do the loathsome specimens with whom he now comes in contact. I have heard all sorts of estimates as to the real proportion of Bolsheviks to that of the population of Siberia and I think the most accurate is that of General Ivanov-Rinov who estimates it as two per cent. There is hardly a peasant this side of the Urals who has the slightest interest in the Bolshevik or his doings except in so far as it concerns the loss of his own property and, in fact, his point of view is very much like that of our own respectable farmers, when confronted with the I [?] ideal."

The 10 were simply asked questions by a committee. this doesn't mean "persecuted". They were at times clumsy, but quite legitimate investigations (1947/1951-2) into how far the CPUSA, a party financed and controlled by a hostile foreign power's intelligence service, had infiltrated into the Hollywood studios.

Also, CPUSA had absolutely zero sway in Hollywood. Most studio heads in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s were, in fact, arch-conservatives. Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM, kept an autographed picture of Benito Mussolini behind his desk, while Harry Cohn -- also an admirer of the Italian fascist -- produced a newsreel extolling the virtues of Italian fascism.

The Hollywood 10, served federal prison time for contempt of congress..... not for being a communist. Many people miss that point. What is additionally not remembered in relationship to this film is the timing. America and its allies were involved in a cold war with the communist USSR and its allies. The hunt for communist subversives who were out to use all means at their disposal to overthrow America was part of that cold war. America had just walked away from WWII and its intelligence capabilities were still operational and very effective...... It would lead ultimately to the Cuban Missile Crisis, where Russia sent Nuclear missiles to Cuba to threaten the United States.... Therefore, Communist subversives were sought out in every quarter which they were given... many of which were aligned to the motion picture industry.... Eventually the Waldorf Statement was released by Hollywood industry management, in which they denounced Communism and the hiring of Communist subversives, considered influenced by the USSR..... Most people commenting here are too young to understand the complete picture, especially using the backdrop of the cold war.........

Many aided the anti-Franco fighters in Spain, who were dominated by communists for their organizational insistence.
They made very bad decisions associating themselves with communists, in light of popular feelings of the time, added to real and prolific Soviet spying.
Yet they, as strongly Left -- even giving aid to communist-dominated fighting forces of foreign nations -- oppose the way of free life in personal support of communist militia efforts, which is a system of supreme hierarchy and destruction of opponents.
Marx even called for total genocide of various ethnic and racial groups, some of whom (= Serbs) he and Engels called "social trash." Marx's partner, Engels, in Marx's 1849 Neue Rheinische Zeitung (newspaper), called for the extermination of "primitive nations," including Scottish Highlanders, Basques (Boscos), Bretons, Serbs.
Communism is a trash ideology, especially considering the crazies who concocted Marxism, and how it works in practice, to only destroy those who oppose. These 10 were asking for a world of hurt, in practice, also considering the underhanded ways of the communist parties in countries all over the world. Socialist statist regimes require police state tyranny and control of all media.
By the way, I’m not Right Wing. I’m a _classical liberal._ I believe in personal liberties that Marxian socialism are totally contrary to.
Yes, I’ve read Marx, from his sometimes times falsely credited writings, to his editorial writings for Engels’ equally shit rag, _Neue Rheinische Zeitung._
I’ve read lots of that dystopian trash from other far Left writers too, including Hegel and other charlatan theorists who push autocratic views. Marx was a disciple of Hegel, and applied it to a governance regime socialism.
I know about Marx’s terrible family life too. He was a disgrace of a person.
Communists kill and jail people who disagree with them, if they have power to do so,
Yes, communists. The goal of statist socialism is communism.
Don’t even try to gaslight me.
The Lefties don’t even define Nazis correctly, another far Left ideology I equally despise for its criminal nature joined at the hip with (neo-)Marxists. Nazis are not fascists. That’s just a fact, easily identified by anyone who’s ever read Giovanni Gentile’s [djen-TEE-lay] works, since he co-invented fascism.
Nazis call themselves National Socialists, which they are.
Fascist history grew directly out of communists.
Mussolini, seeing low Italian public interest in joining Bolshevism of his party while he was chief editor of the Italian communist party, introduced ultranationalism.
This triggered his expulsion from the Italian communist party.
Next he teamed with Gentile to form the first state fascist government.
Hitler despised fascism, and Nazis don’t tolerate political trade unions that are required of fascism, along with actualism-which has the effect of negating reality for the sake of ideology.
The German Labor Front (DAF) wasn’t a labor union. It was created for two sole purposes:
      1. Militarily train men outside Versailles Treaty
      2. Nazify every aspect of Germans through workplace bureaucratic planning, reaching as far as regulating German individual recreation, and issuing/overseeing ration cards. The VW Käfer/Beetle prototypes grew out of the DAF program.
