Did it though? Did it cause more damage than the threat itself? I for one don't think it did. McCarthy's mistake was focusing on Soviet infiltration of our government, which he did a somewhat good job at addressing, or at least shaming the Democrats into better policing their own, but the KGB's primary focus was in infiltrating and subverting American institutions like colleges and the media. They were playing the long game, and we are just now reaping the benefits of their work.

George C Marshall countermanded that order which allowed the Chinese to pour over the boarder enmass and attack the Americans, while refusing to give McArthur the means to defend his men. The head of the Chinese army said...we never would have dared attack the Americans unless the American administration hadn't promised us that McArthur would not be given the forces to protect his men. My father was in high school from 1948 to 1952. (Back in the days when high schools were commonly named for iconic American presidents. My father attended Thomas Jefferson High School. Coincidentally, my mother attended James Madison High School.)
I didn't think of it at the time, but later I wondered if the teacher who made that apparently memorable remark to his or her impressionable students had previously been required to take a "loyalty oath" and feared the possibility of losing his or her job should he or she describe U.S. power and prestige as anything less than suggested in the quote, and then being blacklisted.

This video has some historical errors. First, the house continued to investigate "unamerican activities" well into the 70s long after McCarthy was censured. Second, the blacklist also outlived McCarthy, not really fully ending until early to mid 60s. Finally, a sin of omission. Democrats participated in this witch hunt, most notably Robert Kennedy who assisted McCarthy directly and JFK used the "soft on communism" accusation against Nixon in 1960. This was more widespread and deeper than this video leads us to believe.

Am I missing something here? I watched it twice. I found it confusing bias and uninformative. He concludes by saying "he probably died from alcoholism" like huh? Besides the point is how was it a "small" threat when they literally had a spy ring doing espionage & successfully passed top secret information back to the communist soviets, extracted technical details regarding the atomic bomb project from within top security clearance labs and passed it down the spy ring helping the direct enemy your up against in a cold war obtain nuclear weapons which resulted in a rapid arms race and tensions building up to the point we literally almost blew the entire world up. They was a number of decision making people who calculated that it was the right thing to do because in the end more American would survive from all the nuclear bombs going off then soviets and Kennedy refused.. going from a defensive on the offensive was no big deal or just a "small threat" because they gave people a hard time? huh? 🫤

I got to be in it and it's shocking how well he nailed the idea down, using an actual witch hunt to symbolize this idea with the Salem witch trials. A genius of a man that refused to give any names of people that were thought to be communists when he was interrogated excellently captured the mob mentality and hysteria that happened in that time.

In 1980 while at UT- Austin I had the privilege to hear John Henry Faulk speak to my Journalism class. He described a group called AWARE that would put entertainer's names on a list of people with "known Communist ties." This threatened one's ability to get work or then as now, lucrative endorsements! If you let them shake you down for 50,000 dollars they would take your name off the list. John Henry ran as union president of the radio actor's guild on an anti- AWARE platform. That put him in Mccarthy's crosshairs!

And the whole blacklist is mostly a myth, Hollywood hates controversy most of the people could still work just not on big projects, similar to what is happening to Mel Gibson right now. It's hard to claim witchunt when all they needed to say what the mafia was using just look at the Tony Accardo and he was a mafia boss everyone wanted in jail. The anti-Communist push didn't come out of nowhere.
    1) A high level official (Alger Hiss) was convicted in 1950 of perjury in connection with Soviet espionage.
    2) The Soviets had developed a nuclear bomb by 1949 and it was learned that our nuclear program was honeycombed with Soviet spies (Rosenbergs, Greenglass, Gold, etc.)
With the opening of some of the Soviet archives in the 90s plus the declassification of the Venona decrypts, it is now confirmed beyond any doubt that the CPUSA was funded by and was fully subservient to Moscow and that it had an underground apparatus dedicated to espionage. Over 300 Americans are now known to have been working for Soviet intelligence during the 1940s. Hiss was there representing the US at Yalta.

The Arthur Miller play The Crucible was a portrayal of the Salem witch trials in the late 17th century, however it was written during the McCarthy era because he wanted to draw a direct comparison between 1690's Salem and Joe McCarthy's communist hunt of the 1950's. McCarthyism spread to the entertainment industry and many very famous people of that time were accused--even Lucille Ball (of "I Love Lucy") and famous silent film actor Charlie Chaplin.
