Universal was the creator of the original cinematic universe in the 30's and 40's.

This set REALLY needs to include the Chaney versions of Phantom & Hunchback ... THAT, is where it all started !!! Re-mastered, and with commentaries...

Doesn't the public domain mean that anyone can use them? Including Universal? I don't see the problem.

    • @AdamYJ
      @AdamYJ 7 років тому +4

Yes, but Universal is probably trying to double down on the version of Phantom they have the rights to, pushing that version to become more "iconic" so they can make more money on it through licensing and such.

I got this set, my favorites were Dracula, invisible man and the creature from the black lagoon, I really love these old movies, but I did wish they included the original phantom of the opera.

I just found this set completely randomly at my local Best Buy tonight....had Dracula and Frankenstein on just Standard DVD....and then found all these movies on Steelbook form except both Frankensteins (original and bride), Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Phantom of the Opera....so even though this set is far from being complete, I'm extremely happy I was able to find it and get it for the price I did.

--So far, I've seen 6 out of 8 of these films. My favourite without a doubt is
    "The Invisible Man"
It's hilarious, over the top, cheesy, dark and the special effects are fantastic for 1933! Way ahead of its time. Claude Rains as Jack Griffin (the invisible Man) is perfect for the role. His voice and over the top performance Makes the character. No one else could've done it.
It's Directed by James Whale, the Director of Frankenstein & The Bride Of Frankenstein which is partly a parody of itself.
He knew how to put humour in horror.

I love the story of how Rains got the role (which was his first movie.) Prior to that, he only did stage-work, where an actor (especially at that time) had to play things very broadly, very over-the-top. James Whale happened to catch one of his very-very-over-the-top stage performances & realized that if ANYONE could carry a whole film using only his voice, AND convincingly portray one simultaneously going around the bend, it was Claude Rains, and he hired him on the spot.
Then when Rains saw the finished film, he was reportedly a little embarrassed by his over-the-top performance, and vowed to reign it in a bit in all his future movie roles, which ultimately made him a better actor, he felt.

I have this set. It's good for any classic horror fan. If you're looking for classic black and white atmospheric monster/horror films; the kind with foggy graveyards, this is perfect!
Also you'd be surprised at some of the effects in these films, ahead of their time. Especially The Invisible Man. For 1933, it's genius.

Oh my I've got them all on DVD and the picture quality is outstanding!! (So is the sound quality). I do agree that the Phantom of the Opera set would have been awesome with a good quality version of Chaney's Phantom!! I've got the film but the quality is just so-so. I think that is the only thing missing from the Phantom pack - Chaney. Hunchback would have been great to add on that set as a bonus film. lol.

BRAVO as I've been a big fan of these Universal horror films ever since I was a young kid within ages of 7 & 11 back in the early 1970s.
Plus I have all the DVDs of each film.
Now what others within the movie business could ever pull it off like those of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr, Claude Rains, Elsa Lanchester, Colin Clive, Ernest Thesiger & Dwight Frye once it comes to any performances of the Universal film genre??

Hi! Is this the YT channel for the people who restored Dracula in blu-ray? If yes, can you guys digitally remaster The Midnight Girl (1925) and The Silent Command (1923), please? Actually, the entire Bela Lugosi filmography would be swell, starting with those, thanks!

I think people expected too much from that film. It was supposed to be fun, and comedic, not serious. I like it, it introduced me to the originals and was quite well acted. The story line wasn't great, but it was pretty spectacular visually. I also liked the steampunk vibe and Kate Beckinsale was hot as hell too. 🤣

Alan Silvestri's score for Van Helsing is epic, if not scary. So I don't see why it's a problem. Van Helsing is Dracula's foe, after all.

They did some Invisible Man sequels in the 1940s, but none were as good as the original (especially "Invisible Man's Revenge," in which the SFX were, by comparison, pretty cheesy.) They also did an "Invisible Woman" in 1940, but it was more of a screwball comedy rather than a horror/thriller. (I've often thought how cool it would've been if "Invisible Woman" had been a James Whale-type thriller/dark comedy instead!)

Of all the titles featured, the "Phantom of the Opera" remake was, in my opinion, the weakest. It could (and should) have been excellent, but unfortunately they changed the title character and completely butchered the original story, thereby substantially weakening both. They changed the title character's background, and by also changing his relationship to the female lead, they eliminated his motivation, and therefore eliminated most of the dramatic tension of the original story. The result was, compared to other, better Universal Horror films, pretty weak. Had they simply filmed the original story, the film could've been a masterpiece, but...they didn't.
