    Your work is beautiful and I know a Brooklyn accent when I hear one (Dad's from Brooklyn and went to Pratt back in the 50's!) Lotus flowers ARE very special and dear to me as well. I've been photographing them but more recently on too many outings with my camera the Lotus have not always "behaved" for me and aren't always open... so I decided i need to "illustrate" them in a different way, plus the watercolor allows for a whole different feel. The Lotus is a rather incredible flower with many symbolic meanings among the Hindu and Buddist. The Hindu even believe the sun was born from the Lotus flower. Thank you Ross for this wonderful video - it will help me start working in watercolors! p.s. I love all the detail you provide. I should probably get a mechanical pencil rather than use a regular graphite pencil...

    This was awsome! I'm working on a white lotus with my new water soluble oils and am trying to paint my flower from a photo with a pink lotus. Your video helped me get a lot more relaxed about colors I can use to create the various tones and shadows in my petals. I love the way your lotus turned out and am inspired to try water colors sometimes. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Hey there, Ross! Don't you just love it when a solution for a problem just magically presents itself at just the right time? That's what happened when I found this video yesterday.
    My problem is this: I'm just starting to learn how to paint with watercolors and I quickly realized the most important ingredient (in my humble opinion) is the quality of the paper. The difference between Arches compared to Strathmore, for example, is night and day!!! I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know, lol! But, I don't have much money and it was almost enough to make me throw in the towel if I had to use anything but Arches to make my mistakes on. But, here's the solution... I can just do tiny little paintings while I'm learning. I can paint six tiny paintings on just one sheet of Arches!
    I don't know why it didn't occur to me until I saw your video, but I'm so happy to realize it now. I did this painting of the waterlily yesterday and will likely do it again today before I move on to your other tutorials on tiny paintings. Thanks very much for sharing your talent.

      realisticart I' ve just found your videos and like them very much. Although I'm a longtime watercolor painter I know we can always learn more. I never will know it all , thats how it is with this medium. your painting techniques are explained to the 'nth degree. My only problem with it is using such heavy paper for such tiny paintings. The flowers are so delicate my thinking is maybe a hot pressed paper. Thank you so much for sharing your k owledge.

    Enjoyed this as I do with all your painting videos. Question: what is a good use for a painting of this size?

    • @realisticart
      @realisticart  11 років тому +1

      Hi Kathe,
      Miniature paintings have been popular genera for centuries, and I make small paintings in a range of sizes. The reason for this exact size (2.5 x 3.5) is that it puts them in the category of Artist Trading Cards. In addition to that I also create extended series of cards that are all based on the same original drawing. They would not be considered “editions “because that implies “exact printed replications.” Since each one is an original, hand painted watercolor, I consider them to be “variations on a theme,” and sometimes offer that as ACEO cards. ACEO = Art Cards, Editions and Originals
