Merry Christmas Sam . I truly believe that you can get this car fixed . I am curious though if it turns out that thermostat is not the issue then could be it be faulty water pump ?

Yes this is meant to be done while hooked up to the BMW Diag computer and it will actually monitor the coolant temps at the same time you're running the car.
Why does BMW feel the need to make this so overly complicated?!

Ahh . . . German engineering.
Finally fixed it, by reading the manual.
@samcrac Hey Sam I had the same problem on my salvage i8 it took 3 flushes and the recommended bleeding procedure in the manual. For evry two minutes after the engine starts you have to rev to 3500 rpm for 5 seconds and rest for 10 then repeat that 4 times until you hit a total time of 16 minutes. Now repeat the entire thing exepect at 5500 rpm until ur total time is 18 min. Then at 18 min do it one last time to 5500 rpm then take a test drive in sport mode. After three times of doing this it solved my problem
Please record this whole procedure. Would make for some fantastic content. No time lapse. 🤣🤦🏻♂️
@@michaelk7179 I started recording it when I did it then half way through I was like screw this 😂

Hey interesting note! When you say you flushed it, did you drop the coolant in between vacuums or just keep vacuuming and filling?
@@Samcrac I can’t believe you responded! Check the water pump impeller. Plenty of times where a plastic impeller will break loose from the shaft and not circulate the water. Hard to find the issue, but once you experience it once, after scratching your head for a few days, it will be something you remember.
I had an issue where my water pump impeller was cracked and when the Jeep was at idle or low idle, the Jeep temp was fine. Once the rpms are up and engine was warmed up, the cracked impeller would slip and the Jeep would heat up. Had to replace the plastic impeller with a aluminum water pump.
He did listen to it with a stethoscope in the video. Said it sounded ok but maybe a busted impeller doesn't always make noise?
@@raldogtm I just replaced a water pump on a jeep commander this past weekend and found a stupid plastic impeller in it. I did replaced it with an aluminum version. The impeller seemed fine though but the water pump was leaking like one of cracks cows. Lol
Yes, sometimes the impeller will crack at the shaft hub, and reduce the force against the shaft. So feels OK and spins fine at low speeds, but then slips at higher speeds.

He should modify his pizza car into a mobile toolbox, I bet this would save him days searching for tools 🙂
Had one of these on lease. And the thermostat and housing had to be replaced twice. If there is ANY leak in that housing it overheats in the first 3 to 5 minutes of driving. It also keeps the thermostat stuck closed. I have the paperwork from my leased one, there should also be a TSB on that issue.
This is what id guess. Something isnt allowing the coolant flow....dealer would have replaced sensors, thermostat, and waterpump by now
Pretty sure these have a coolant switching valve. That, and a special bleed mode for it.
I'd suggest checking this valve and seeing if it is stuck or broken. I think you're right on the money with the cold reservior - there was some pressure, but no flow.
Also, some modern BMWs have an electric auxillary coolant pump, may be worth checking into that too.

I wonder if it's computer issues.
@@wdolgae could be, I had head gaskets that were put on that had a restriction, it would go 2 miles before overheating. The question that I don't remember being answered is , was there any engine work prior to it overheating ? Something could be blocking a coolant gallery or flowing around internally then blocking the flow. But a couple quick checks could answer the electronic or mechanical end. By now he might have solved the problem.
Question 1: What is the sensor that is giving the overtemp indication?
Question 2: To which computer is the sensor giving the info to?
Action 1: Check the wiring between the two.
Action 2: Replace the sensor
Action 3: Reload computer's software or replace computer.
Maybe it's just an indication issue after all...

Milky residue under the oil cap most of the time caused by short trips before the oil gets warmed up. If it's possible, check and make sure coolant is circulating and purge the air out of system. Check all coolant lines and make sure they are also clear. Try running the Ac and make sure the fans are running. They automatically turn on with the Ac on high.

Just a thought, and I don't know if this would even be possible, but how about a T fitting strategically placed in the rear that you could either 1. pull a vacuum with, or 2. use as a bleeder to purge air as you introduce coolant. You could also install a check valve in there to keep the system sealed
is the vent line clear, is coolant flowing in to the tank from the vent when running.

Wow, a good episode from samcrac. Well done.
A tool I use made by mac. It’s a glass cylinder with a catalyst metal and the special chemical you put over radiator cap area with cap off use suction bulb to draw air from coolant system through it and if it’s leaking the stuff in the tube will change color.
Check out the water pump impeller, watch the return flow on the small pipe back into the coolant expansion tank, engine running of course.

Many years ago, I went through a similar problem with the Mitsubishi Starion. The thermostat kept showing that the car was running extremely hot. After exhausting all possibilities, including water pump, thermostat, and a fan clutch, to no avail, I finally realized that the only indication that the car was about to explode was the gauge, no other steam, or drainage anywhere. Several mechanics and dealerships later, I found one man that told me it could be a blown capacitor on the gauge. Indeed, it was, the car was never overheating, and a $25 replacement part finally took care of the problem.
Although we did see that coolant wasn't circulating. This one seems to be a genuine blockage.

Simple test rig up some hoses and fittings and blow water thru the lines and the block to make sure you don’t have a blockage

I think it is thermostat. Merry Christmas Greeting from the Nederlands🎄
Sam, the I8's thermostat works by using a plunger with some special wax to ensure a seal when it is closed and a signal from the ECM. Perhaps a pin in the ECU is dead or some wiring is chafing. Or the thermostat has a broken part inside
these are the comments im interested in, someone with technical information that could solve the problem
This guy is a god with advertisements!!
Check the upper and lower radiator hoses if one is cool or barely warm vs the other being hot the tstat is bad. Also take the belt off the water pump and spin it fast. It should have some resistance. If it spins freely fast thr bearing is failing. The bearing doesn't have to make a noise to be bad.
Sam officially does the best transitions into his advertisements 🤣🤣🤣
was there an advert (?!)
You barely see it coming 😂
What advertisements???
Hey Sam. I had a Nissan truck that, after an accident, had this same problem. It turned out that someone had switched the reservoir cap with the radiator cap. Then, an aftermarket coolant reservoir cap that lacked the same type of spring to pressurize the system properly was just installed. It took three shops before a rare TSB was discovered mentioning a problem with aftermarket caps. They replaced everything and voila, problem solved. Good luck!
Interesting idea
That sounds like a coolant line blockage more than a thermostat issue. The thermostat has almost certainly been replaced (jumper it or remove and/or replace to see what happens but probably not the issue). I'd take a look at where your temp sensor is complaining and check the flow around that area. Hopefully it's not a blockage in the engine block...
Sam... Suggest pigging the coolant lines and/ or looking for a kink in the piping that would halt flow.
You are wrong Sam, on modern BMWs the dipstick is right between the seat and steering wheel
Love it!
Best Samcrac episode I've seen in a while!
On my Forester I know(when I had heard gasket issues) if I didn't have the heater running when I'm trying to bleed my system, due to the routing of the coolant passages, The water pump wasn't supplying heated coolant to the thermostat housing area itself to open it.
Another issue I've had on my Mazdaspeed with a pressurized overflow tank was a small crack caused the system to not pressurize and lose all it's coolant. This mostly only happened after the coolant heated up and sucked back in air, but another thing to look at.
I'd be checking if the temp sensors are working correctly. Now which one? As there is a cooling loop for the battery pack and front traction motor also, which has bypasses, a pump in the front, and heats and cools at a different rate to the IC. Try it on EV only and see if it gets hot. There is also a separate water pump for the turbo, and a trick electric heated coolant source for the interior heater for when driving on EV only, and another ccoling fan behind the right rear tail light.
You got this one Sam! I can't wait to see it running and having a drag race with Rich!!
Usually when a car has gone through 5 shops and they couldnt fix it, its a $5 fix. (dealer wanted to put a new engine lmao)
I thought it was gonna be the dust covered one they always looked at at the auction place lol
Check for the highest point in the coolant system, I am assuming its higher than the coolant reservoir. If this is the case then there should be a bleed screw/fitting to top up the system, check around the cylinder head & thermostat housing? just a wild guess.
