Love the distress look. Your string is hemp, I have several sizes of the same. If it is hard to string through because it will fray a bit and bend, add a drop of your glue to the end and let it dry so you get a stiff end to thread. It makes it so much easier and faster.
Wonderful finished product! As a genealogist and one who keeps journals, and as one who makes scrapbooks, this is great a great idea! What a wonderful thought to use a census record for some background paper!
thank you for this fantastic tutorial.. I had to smile though because I could hear your dryer and such in the background...kinda cute...doing some multi tasking while you played with your crafts.... I will give your idea a try...very easy to understand and non complicated....:)
if you will get in the habit of using a pencil and marking a T on the top right corner of everything, you won't have to stop and think about which is the top front of each piece. Also, if it matters about the order you could also put 1,2,3,etc. This is a bookbinding practice that will make it easier for you to not get mixed up.
This is a lovely looking journal! This is an older video so as with time we all learn and develop and change the way we do things so may already have learned a glue trick to help with the binding but I would like to add a suggestion. When you lay your glue down, either use an old credit type/gift card or piece of cardboard as a squeegee & smooth out your glue. It will lay the glue down evenly, you will not have gaps or air bubbles and there will be no oozing. Thanks for a great video, off to view your others. Have a great day :)
thank you for this video showing me how simple it can be I've been struggling with binding but love making journals your Journal is great thanks for inspiring me. beads with the beautiful addition to the tail end of those strings. could you show me how you stain your covers ? I think you mentioned Walnut stain ? what kind of product how to apply?
You could coat the end of the twine in glue, form it into a point with your fingers, let it dry, and then thread that through the holes. :) This is a great tutorial, I love the look of this journal.
Use double stick tape along with glue will help hold the covers while the glue is drying as there are times when the double stick tape works better than glue depending on what kind of material you are using as covers
cant wait to see more, and im trying to make one too....my very first...im just having a bit of a hard time staining them cause i dont have enough tim holtz ink and i tried doing it with coffee but it makes the pages smell very strong like it, so im gonna try with tea and see.....if u have any tips pls share them...and again lorie, thanks so much for sharing.! xo. Marce.
I have stained with tea before. I may try that if I do my next one, because I think it would be faster and less work. When I have so many pages to do, I get burned out on distressing.
+Donna L Hi Donna, I poke a small hole, insert the eyelet and use a special tool and a hammer to clamp it down. You can find the tool at the craft store with the eyelets. Usually they are not expensive. Lorie
+Kwantwell Cabellon I'm not sure I remember the exact measurement, but it's all based on the size and thickness of your pages. You want a pretty tight fit though, as things will stretch and loosen up over time and no one wants a wobbly journal.
What if you took the string and put it back through holes on opposite ends through cover and signitures and tie inside center of each signiture and put little flat decoration on end of string?
That is beautiful; For the signature pages… It looks very stiff, or is it just like card stock, scrapbook paper? And how'd you make the spine?
It just normal weight card stock. Here's the tutorial on the binding. ua-cam.com/video/exu4dQmtGjg/v-deo.html

+Donna L

Hi Debbie, I used card stock. I believe I glued two pieces together.
Thank you so much :)
what is the measurements for the spine?
+Kwantwell Cabellon

Can you tell me how you made your spine?
Here is a tutorial video on how I did the binding. The spine is made from the same material as the cover. ua-cam.com/video/exu4dQmtGjg/v-deo.html

Just curious, is your dryer on?
That was a long time ago and I'm not sure, but it's possible.
