  • This is the first part of a bookbinding series. In this video, I demonstrate how I make my text block using kettle stitch binding.
    Materials I use:
    - 70 gsm book paper
    - Sewing cotton threads
    - Bone folder (the one I'm using is plastic, not real bone)
    - Sewing needle
    - Needle/thumbtack to make holes in paper
    - PVA glue
    - 200 gsm blue paper/cardstock for the endpapers

    The stitching looked so easy to do that I was shocked how much difficulty I had to keep everything simple. I ended up with knots, paper torn, loose ends and broken thread. It is very difficult to reach a level of experience where things look easy. And that's before I got to the glue part. Oh my God!

      Coming in months late with advice: Applying beeswax *thoroughly* to the thread helps immensely with snagging and tearing issues, and you definitely want to make sure you've used a thick enough awl for your hole punches.

    Watching this video has given me the hope i need to make my own journals from scratch ive never done it your way but i have tried with metal wire and it was just too messy and not organized. I kept trying to find videos to teach me how to do it with glue and or thread and so far ive found your channel today! Im gonna try your way now and see how well i can do it. Because whenever someone can teach me something visually i can do it but if its words and nothing else i struggle with that. Just noticed at the start of the video there is a light coloured stain on your workbench that looks very much like a picture of a dog...an accident or deliberate?
    A tip I picked up watching DAS Bookbinding was to use a wooden block to sew on. It lifts the work up off the bench and makes it a lot easier. Since I started doing that I've found the quality of my sewing has gone up a heck of a lot and it is easier to get consistent tension throughout the bookblock. I use 3 pieces of 3/4in ply glued together.

    • @rururereii
      @rururereii  2 роки тому +3

      Hahaha yes my workbench is an old one, I guess there was a hole and someone tries to cover it up with wood filler, but it went wrong somehow. Anyway, thank you so much for the tip! I appreciate it so much, I will definitely give it a try :)

    Does the grain of your paper run long or short? I have a hard time finding printer sized paper that runs grain short, which limits the size of your text block significantly, if you want the grain to run parallel to the spine.

    Like for Coptic stitching and making hard cover books

    • @rururereii
      @rururereii  Рік тому +1

      Hello! Gaps between signatures when I stitch is also something that I'm struggling with. But for me, pulling the thread and tightening it (without straining it) between stitches helps with the gaps a little bit.
      Though it didn't really help when I did it with coptic stitch.
      For hardcover books with kettle stitch, I also get gaps between signatures, but I eliminate the gaps by pressing the signatures together and then glue the spine, and it will stay like that without gaps. I hope this explanation makes sense, and can help you :)

    • @lapimli9539

      @rururereii so the glue and compression is the thing that removes gaps? Oooh... that's a bit sad cause I don't have a book press. Oh well, I'll work with what I got.

      Hello! Really sorry for the lack of explanation bc this is my first video on youtube and I was still inexperienced in making videos. I have a video that has a little explanation on bookbinding with similar stitch : ua-cam.com/video/VlTp3UkuvDI/v-deo.html. You can watch it if you want to!
      To answer your questions, the size of the paper that I use in this video is a4, the paper is called book paper. The one that you called bundles is called signatures in bookbinding, I usually use 5 sheets of paper for each signatures. For the holes, it usually doesn't matter where or how many you poke the holes, but I just measure the width of the paper and divide the holes evenly.
      I hope this answer can be helpful for you!

      Hi, so sorry for the really late reply.. The papers I used are called book papers, usually used for printing novels. Sometimes, I use regular office paper, or watercolor paper (depending on what you're gonna use it for). But book paper has that 'feathery' texture and if you write on it with ink it kinda bleeds on the paper, so I'm not sure many people will like it. But i don't mind. Hope this helps :)

      Hi! Sorry for the late reply. The thing I used underneath the paper is eva foam (pretty thick, maybe 1 cm?) And the template for the stitch holes is from a regular cardstock

    • @abrahamgiliana
      @abrahamgiliana Рік тому

      hi. I have the same system. I use a one half inch soft board for underneath and dowel, from arts and crafts, Walmart, Michaels or so. For the template, I use plastic cover sheet, the dots, I made some tiny cuts, triangle shape, so the dowel will sink into the hole, it is easier on the eye. I use plastic because the cardboard will wear off after a couple of books. the needle would be too painful for fingers. I punch six holes per signature (every set of 4, 5 or more sheets is called a signature) and they are uniformed.

    How many centimetre do you leave between every hole please ?

    • @rururereii
      @rururereii  Рік тому +2

      It's 3 cm. But there's no rule for it, I just try to make evenly spaced holes depending on the length of the text block. So you can definitely put more or less, as much as you want. Hope this helps :)

      For me it's around $10 - $12, depending on materials that I use. Because sometimes I have to buy one ream of paper, instead of only a few sheets of them. And the fabric is calico canvas fabric which is pretty affordable

    what happens if I use other type of glue rather than pva??

    • @rururereii
      @rururereii  Рік тому

      It will most likely to lose flexibility. Because the reason why people use pva glue for bookbinding is because pva glue is strong, acid free, non toxic, and the book can remain flexible.
      But it doesn't mean that you can't use any other glue for bookbinding. I've seen videos where people make books with hot glue! I think it just depends on what kind of bookbinding method you're using.
      I hope this helps :)
