    The audio is clear. The composition is in that short demo. Brown Mark rearranged, but didnt co-write (and I think he should be credited/paid for that - David Z got the credit). Andy Summers claimed co-writing credits on ´Every breath you take´ too, but it was another kind of (a very strong) arrangement.

      @@ApolloSol in songwriting, what defines a song is the melody and maybe sometimes, harmony. And Prince demo had it complete. Ed Sheeran basically sampled the entire rhythm section of Marvin Gaye´s "Let´s get it on" and the court didnt consider it plagiarism because the melody was entirely different.

    This is the key to the story. BrownMark didn’t see the vision. Didn’t like it for Maserati or Prince. He never said that he told Prince that the song should be sung in a falsetto or a higher register, and all of that suggest that Prince did a significant amount in 4 hours. More than he would have thought. Plus the skeleton of the song is all there in the demo.

    This explains a LOT about the things that I read about and noticed back then, as well as other things I've heard since then about the stuff going on behind the scenes in that time period. Now, IIRC, Wendy is claiming that she was responsible for the well-known riff before Prince says "Kiss" each time in the song. I'm not inclined to disbelieve her. Prince has a lot in common with Frank Zappa in that they both conveniently forgot to give writing credit to those who participated in the process.

      You cannot tell someone not to speak of their experiences! Whether the stories make Prince look bad or not, it is their experience with him. Prince was known for giving basic tracks to his band-mates and telling them to vibe with it. They would do all of this work on the track and Prince would take all of the credit. It is a common theme being told from a lot of his former band-mates, who played with him during the early years. Yes, he was a musical genius. However, he did not do "All" of the work by himself, with no input from the people around him. Wendy and Lisa were some of his biggest inspirations and collaborators. However, they got little writing credits for the hundreds of songs they collaborated on with Prince.

      That is not what they are saying. They are saying that Brown is overstating his importance in the composition of the song. If you read David Z's account of what he did to that song, David Z did quite a lot and his credits for arrangement were given in the liner notes.. Prince's demo has the first verse, the chorus, the chord progression and the vocal melody. Is Brown claiming he wrote the lyrics to the second verse? Its one thing to say I want my piece of the pie, its another thing to say the whole pie always belonged to me in the first place. Mark has been talking about the Kiss thing for years...but he never took full credit when Prince was alive. It wouldn't be right/correct to start now.

      This is very tricky territory, I assume Brownmark was being paid a salary to work for Prince. In real life, if an engineer invents a product on his/her job -- the company owns the rights because the engineer was working as a salaried employee. It sounds like Prince had Revolution members tinkering with songs - that was their job. Brownmark didn't write Kiss, nor was it the final version. For whatever reason, Prince didn't give him a credit -- he's no longer here to tell his side. It's a hard pill to swallow sometimes when you work really hard and don't feel appreciated, I get that. The only thing you can do is strike out on your own which he did, but the highlight of his professional life was being in the Revolution.

      @Igaveyoumyfakename 2 роки тому

      Wrong! Prince gave Brown Mark a guitar and vocal demo and TOLD HIM to do his thing to it. (Indicating that the pair had apparently done this before.) So Brown Mark went and did exactly what Prince asked, adding all the other instruments and production that made it a fully realized song ready for release. Upon hearing what Brown did, Prince then switched out the vocals, added guitars, removed the bass and KEPT ALL THE REST of what Brown Mark did. So according to this account (from Brown Mark) of what happened, the final released version of "Kiss" that we all know and love, does indeed include production elements by Brown Mark. And if that is the case YES, Brown Mark should have absolutely been credited as a producer or cowriter of the song. But everyone knows how Prince rolls and KNEW he wasn't trying to credit you if you contributed to his stuff. And Brown Mark SHOULD have know better and got the deal/understanding in writing. (Something all of these folks who worked with Prince either never bothered to do or were too afraid to do.) Bottomline: If you are keeping/using any meaningful, important, or significant portion of someone else's work in the final release of a song, they should receive credit. He's just another of the MANY folks that Prince screwed over when it came to giving credit on songs. And apparently that was the unspoken price of getting to be in a band or be in the studio with Prince: any and all genius will be credited to Prince, and ONLY Prince.

      @@user-gi6ee8vj1y thats so interesting. Everyone has faults, some more than others. I think its just hard to let someone say things about an artist u only saw one way. It seems so easy for everyone to say bad things about him. But when he was living He Never used names and called no one out that I remember. I know he probably did things that he regret it later on in his life. I still think he is one of the greatest singers and Entertainers that ever lived. I still cry about him being gone. People just don't want to feel betrayed. Its like finding out ur dad was a killer once he been dead for years. I would have loved to hear Prince answer all these allegations about him and he can't. That makes it extra hard. Dead man can't talk. Therefore anyting I hear bad about him, from anyone, I take with a grain of salt.

      Angela Roberts Good point and well said. I doubt that Mark Brown Co Wrote Kiss..It’s just Old Friends For Sale! he’s Probably short on the dough. He’s left it a bit late, waiting till Prince died..huh don’t add up

    If all that is true, how did Prince end up on Mark's album with Bang Bang? Had they "made up" at that point? Why not sue Prince if he "stole" Kiss?

    TBH - the Brownmark version still sounded quite stodgy - nothing like a hit. Prince brought it to life in those 4 hours. You are looking at a basic composer and a genius composer. However, Brownmark should still have got co-credit for the drum beat and xylophone-like riff since Prince did use them.

    Okay, I could be wrong... but it seems like Mark didn't care fpr the song until AFTER it became a hit. Kinda sucks to me, but...

    I get it but let’s be real nobody could’ve done it better than prince

    Appears Prince seemed to have done this to others, from Andre, to Dez, to Morris maybe, so, it sucks, Prince should have given him at least a handsome bonus. And if it was 'us', Prince & The Revolution, then The Revolution WAS Brownmark. And at other times The Revolution was Wendy & Lisa, other times, Dr. Fink... or part Revolution with other musicians like Sheila, Miko, Levi, in there, along with Eric and Atlanta. Jerome! But TODAY, who's 'The Revolution'? And perhaps, back then, Prince used The Revolution as an umbrella, something like that. To tap into other song ideas and collectively as a body, reap the benefits of 'Prince'. Don't blame you Mark. Who was first to leave the Rev? Mark or Wendy & Lisa? Bobby?

    At the end of the day if Prince didn’t bring the song it wouldn’t have been a song

    Apart from the obvious evidence in that original demo that Prince wrote the tune, isn't he also saying that Prince insisted they leave the studio whilst he did the actual arrangement, making this statement that he co-wrote this a tad disingenuous..? Seems to me that all this guy did was get a studio session up and running, and getting the arrangement to the point where THE WRITER came and finished it.. so sure, get paid for part of the arrangement you actually did, but that aint writing the song.. oh and look, he's got a book coming out..

    Prince had the song. Gave them the song. Made it a crappy song. Prince took it HIS song back and re-recorded it making it a hit.

    It is a three-chord pop song. If it wasn't a hit, you guys wouldn't be having this conversation.
