About BrownMark: Born to the name Mark Brown in the Bronx, funk-rocker BrownMark is forever a son of Minneapolis. A working musician since high school, at age 19 Mark Brown was rehearsing with his band Phantasy when he was cold-called by Prince to audition for his band in the summer of 1981. Mannn look, the grease is poppin, the skillet is rockin Sir Brown Lord of Funk. Thank u man for all u have contributed, and continue to contribute to the history and rich, royal legacy of Black music. Peace to the brother.
Thank you sensei for teaching us
I've always wondered... what is "Black Music"?
And... if there truly is "Black Music" then logic dictates there must be "White (or Non-Black) Music." Would "White Music" be Mozart, Wagner, Debussy, Stravinski, Gershwin, Berlin, Bob Dylan, Chicago, Yes, Aerosmith, et al.?
Just wondering.
cookin up the groove in da skillet 🤘🏾
@@tonyinbrazil1 yes to all of the above.
Well stated-couldn't have expressed this same sentiment any better.
Brown Mark doesn't play a groove, he digs a FUNK TRENCH. Unbelievable musicianship and pocket. Mannnn, thank you for everything!!
Indeed!
You youngsters need to watch videos of Larry Graham live in the 70s. Playing bass and singing and dancing all at once. Scary talent.
Larry is certainly a fine musician, but I have so many negative feelings about his relationship with Prince, its hard to even look at larrys face without puking.
I don’t play but this inspires me to want to. Good work
Brilliant way of teaching the power and importance of the one without teaching the power and importance of the one!
Man back in the day at the skating rink EVERYONE GOT ON THE FLOOR 2 THIS JAM! Lets Work!! lol The entire floor was massive and everyone getting the hell down. Prince song was the backdrop to millions of us remembering these songs. (PlayLand Skating Rink) Man what a time in life.
It's honour have brownmark as a teacher
I can’t wrap my head around the fact that you had the privilege to play music with and for Prince and then above all else you created Mazaratti . Prince was proficient in all of his instruments and you Sir got to see him rehearse and create the music with him with your creative input. I bet you have so many stories. Your bass playing is spectacular , thank you for the lessons . Skillet was Fonky 2day
Marazritti thought that was dez.

Thanks for having the patience to educate. It’s needed.
Thanks Mark, for showing us that simplicity is the key!
This makes me want to buy a 70's style J-Bass and practice this like crazy.
Awesome job sir. Thanks for posting. I will be back.
Incredible, that is some bad ass playing! Thank you Brown Mark!
Man-o-man. So cool to get this lesson from the original.
This is the best of UA-cam. One of the greatest living funk bassists showing you exactly how you can do it too. Incredible. Thank you.
Damn when HEAD came on I 4got I was supposed 2 b studyin
I miss you all soooo much ... keep that in mind during the "talks" ;) We need "The Revolution" to lift our spirits again !!!
I had no idea you have a channel, Brown Mark, holy crap. You're literally a living legend, man, thank you for making this. More than anything, as a musician, I've really needed a mentor of this era to get extensive advice from, so this is such an awesome discovery.
Yes, a living legend is what I said as I watched this video. Just discovered his channel after watching a few videos of Prince in concert. New sub here.
The real deal. This lesson is MUCH appreciated. Looking forward to more 👍
Anahata/Ahata = the unplayed note and the played note. The ghost note is first cousin to the unplayed note = you just helped me realize that.
Thank you brother BrownMark.
Awesome dude!!
I wish we had this back in the 80s!!!
This is STILL funky
You still got it bruh! And you haven't aged a day.
Not only you’re a great bassist you’re a great brother for sharing your techniques 🤜🏾🤛🏾

We missed you...
Always had a lot of respect for you since the days of the Revolution. I'm glad to see you're doing stuff on UA-cam to teach us some of that classic funky bass!!
Man, I'm so glad I my path dropped me into this- a really great tutorial- so clear, so illuminating, so focused, on such a good message, from one who Knows. Beautiful. Thank you!
So I’ve been playing let’s work wrong for 15 years? 🙁. Thanks for straightening me out! 👍🏿👍🏿

Nice Mark ! Real fresh how you laid that out !
Super Funky! Brown Mark
De De De Dead on it Brown Mark, so dope. Thanks! What you used to play on the live version of When Doves Cry - there's a version with a key change at the end with a rumbling bass - so funky - that'd be a great video too! & the extended version of Mountains!
Cameo would be great. Thanks for the lessons.
Rumble Bass is at least as integral to the Minneapolis Sound as slap bass, if not more. Thanks for that lesson !
Wow, thank you so much! Been playing bass and funkin' for over 30 years, but never could get the feel right of what I know now is 'Rumble'. You made me very happy. Keep these lessons coming please.
Looking forward every week to watching/hearing one of the goat... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yo Bruh, keep these joints coming Man, You simplify the Funk, and keep it tight and right, and in the Pocket!!.
Excellent instruction and information Mark 🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶♠️♠️♠️♠️👍🏾 Yesssss! Cameo next ... Then Slave hopefully 🙏🏽
This is awesome!!!! Thank you for the expose on making the bass dripping with greasy funky!!! Anyone is was playing with Prince had to be amazing and confident in their ability and you personify this! Also, thank you for showing us how to play Let's Work THE RIGHT WAY! The ghost notes and the rumble are game-changers!!! Keeping it simple, too! Much appreciated!
I see my problem Mark , I need to slow down and put those ghost notes in the right spot , thanks for the great tips
It's a good thing you used a cast iron skillet. Thanks for demonstration.
Yo...I can't believe I woke up to this magic 🪄this morning
It amaze me that we have some negative critics in the dislikes! This man didn’t have to share sh* w/none of us!
So if you just are not musically inclined or don’t know then just move on and leave your negative thoughts n your small minds.
I'm your age brother. I want to play bass. Never had the confidence over the years. Its time. Milwaukee Wisconsin native. Very familiar with Minneapolis. LOVE Prince !
It’s never too late
@@BrownMark thank you!🙏🏽☝🏽❤🎵
I am from Milwaukee also. My first concert was Prince opening for Rick James at Cooley Auditorium M.A.T.C. (Battle of Funk tour)
Tickets were $8 a piece... 😆

Today is the day to start. Too much out here on the used market to get you started without too much of an investment.
The worst that can happen is you realize it was fine just to fiddle around, but not something you want to put the hours into, and move on to something else.
Romero, I just picked up guitar at 50....LETS DO THIS !
This was awesome!!! Thank you so much for slowing this down and making it understandable. I’m definitely going to work on this tonight!!
Thanks for the lesson Brother Brown Mark completely awesome man 👍🏽
keep it simple...so true. peace & love
Thank you Sir !!!! It has help tremendously !!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I am glad that I found this video. I remember listening to you play with Prince back in the day. As a beginner bassist I learned a a lot just from this video. I appreciate it. Blessings to you.🙏🏾
Need an extra like button for this. High value content here.
Thank you BrownMark!! It's nice to see/hear first hand from the man holding down the low end for one of my favorite musicians of all time! 🤜🤛
Man !! , Awesome ! Mr. Brown Mark , I'm a huge fan of prince and the revolution and also love your playing style , I actually got back into playing bass about 3 years ago and working on perfecting my playing and really appreciate you taking the time to do tutorials and showing exactly how you play your style 👏👏👍🎶🎸.. I also follow you on Facebook
Your bass sounds great man, I love how brilliant your strings are and pick up the nuances of the instrument and your playing. Being able to learn from you and your interpretation of funk and soul makes me a hungrier player. Love you man.
many thanks Sir!!! really wish Wendy would do the same for the funky guitar!!!
What a treat! Thank you for this Brother Mark!!! ...aaaaand subbed!!! 2 3 4
I can feel my powers growing in the other techniques, but no growth in my slap bass technique. But I feel like i can wrap my head around this lesson. I will be practicing this nice and slow until it's in my bones. Thank you shifu 🙏🏿
Brown Mark... entirely made of bass. Legend!!
I'm A Self Taught Musician And Learned A Lot By Simply Watching And Listening Deeply Within The Music Through Feel And Rhythm. You Have A Great Way Of Breaking It Down And Explaining It All With Out Making An Average Self Taught Player Feel Left Out .. I Love It! Through This I've Learned What Ghost Note Means And I've Been Doing It All These Years And Never Knew What It Was Called. The First Song I Really Heard And Learned The Break Down Of Prince's Ghost Notes Was In The Time's Song : The Walk ( Hup 2,3,4 What The Hell We Fighting 4 WALK!)(lol) So Ghost Notes Means Like Playing A Back Beat On Bass The Way Like Larry Graham Explained When He Didn't Have A Drummer At Church And Substituted Ghost Notes To Make Up For The Beat .. Thank You So Much For Breaking It All Down For Me Bro!
LOVE THIS MARK!!!!! THAT HEAD BASSLINE HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVE!!!
Holy crap I am so glad I happened across your channel. I have been a fan since the 80’s, thank you for this awesome learning experience
So funky. Love your playing, man. You, Prince and Larry are the three kings!
This series is already off the charts. Subscribed and Inspired! ThankU
I remember the infamous Head, Controversy Tour Live in Houston. Brown Mark, you were killing that bass and then Prince came in with the guitar riffs. OMG!
Man I don't know crap about playing a bass guitar but he makes it looks so easy I see he would be a great instructor.
First off DAMN! I’m just going to throw my bass out the window. Great work! Wanted to say thank you for all the years of music you have given us. You are one funky brother. 🤘🏾
🤣🤣🤣 Thats why y’all Mf’s are who you are! Attention to detail and SO FUNKY! Thanks soooo much🙏🏾
Yeah thats true brown mark you are helping us to keep our hearts and mind open to sounds of the bass we hear in our groove elements. Big ups for brown mark
Thank you for posting this video!!!
Wooo...don’t know what just happened! Wuz’ listening to you covering Mazarati Stroke...blacked out and woke up covered in fawnk!!! Man I love watch’n you thump Brown Mark. Simple lines, space between the notes and I cain’t keep my head’n feet still! Every time I watch you on Ytube I smile for the rest of the bay! Thank you!!!
Brown Mark THE KING !!!
Love your nasty basslines
Thanks Mark will work on it . Funk so hot I get chills.
A TRUE LEGEND.
MONSTER FUNK! This style infiltrated my playing in the 80’s and has been with me ever since. It’s a real gift to see the theory and technique. More FUNK POWER to you BROTHA 👍🏾🤘🏾✊🏾👊🏾!!!
"Rumble Technique" that's what I've always loved about Minneapolis bass players. (including Prince) Im from down south and we would refer to it as "That Action" 🤣 and we'd attempt to imitate it. Oddly enough I'm a drummer by trade, made my living playing Keys, but have always been a bass player at heart. (or at least wanted to be) growing up I had more access to drums and keys in church. anywhoo, I'm spending more time with the bass these days and this is pure gold man. keep it up. One1ness.
The strange thing is, i know a lot of great bass players, but most of them, can't play that Minneapolis Rumble Technique although technically it's not that difficult. I guess you either really feel it, or you don't.
@@beatz04 I concur. It must be something in the cold air in MN that gives them that feel. A funk like no other.
"It's Cook'n & Hot" BrownMark Nation !!!

I thought that these Bass lines were gone when we lost Prince.
