You just summarize in 15 minutes what many brain training courses take weeks and thousands of $$ to do. You are a true blessing for those that havnt got the energy or the finances to take expensive courses. The hope you give is amazing, you are an absolute angel.

I recently went (over the space of three months) from being able to maybe be active an hour or two per day with a lot of exhaustion, to four to six hours a day, with only experiencing exhaustion a few times a week. What I did was a combination of:
Slowly increased body weight excercises (started at one of each movement every other day, am now at five of each, only on days I don’t do anything else body challenging)
Changing how I reacted to my tiredness with a similar brain training strategy. I started looking at my tiredness as normal for my situation, and discerning it as mostly tirednesses that were safe and made sense (instead of low-key panicking about them being signs I was about to crash again, or signs that I would never get well).
Finding some ways to keep myself relatively calm, both by interrupting emotional/mental panic or despair spirals, doing breathing excercises, and by applying some of my old mindfulness training.
The first two months, I didn’t notice much of a difference, but I tried to keep it up anyways. Then I was presented with a project that would be a challenge, and decided I would regret it if I let tiredness keep me from even trying something so important and interesting to me. At first I did experience signs of heading towards crashing, but I managed to change gears a bit with my new ways of approach, kept my stress levels manageable, felt like I broke through some sort of layer of exhaustion, and found this other level of ability on the other side. It’s been fairly stable now for a couple of months, and I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to travel and see friends and family, deal with this project and start making a difference in my home environment.
Edited to add: I did still respect my tiredness, my limits and my need for rest and pacing. I just (after some months of physical and mental graded excercises) managed to limit my tendencies to make more of my tiredness than it actually was, and started to give things a try, giving myself permission to do minimal level engagement or back out altoghether if it really was too much.

Thank you for this. I've had CFS for 10 years and I just found CFS Unraveled and you. This is helpful. You're mantra made me think of the verse 2 Corinthians 5:17 "If anyone be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold all things are become new." A verse I've known, but in the pit of despair had forgotten. That verse is going to be my go-to through this process. Thank you for such a clear explanation!

Great video thanks Raelan. There’s probably about 10-15 brain retraining programs and it’s confusing to know which one to buy and go with. I’ve looked at CFSHealth, Primal Trust, ANS Rewire, Re-Origin, CFS Recovery, DNRS, Gupta, Lightening Program, I can thrive, The Optimal Health Clinic, etc An idea for a video you might be able to do is explain some of them and what’s involved in them so we know which ones might work best for us. It’s a lot of money to invest when most of us can’t work and have spent a lot on specialists already and when you can’t think straight and retain the info it’s really hard to know which one would be best

I think there was a lady she interviewed that did a comparison on what topics the courses do and don't cover ( trauma, personality etc) I did not follow up on it myself as I've found other things that helped, but I do think it should be in the resources.I think it's the same lady that has a CFS podcast too, she might go into more detail on that.

I heard about another one. When you are out in a bush and people walk trough it you create a path (bad habit that give symptoms). And the more people walk that path the clearer and stronger it gets (chronic habit/ chronic symptoms). But when you go another route (good habit). People have to walk that path many times before it gets clear (habit becomes automatic). But the old pathway needs to regrow ( lose the neuron connection). So sometimes when you go the old path symptoms can come up. But the more you walk the new path the less symptoms come. And in the future you need to really walk the old path many tim before symptoms show uo again (resiliance).

Yes, the new path may be forming but the old path is still deeper and for a time the brain may be switching between the two. This explains the ebb and flow of recovery. It is persistence and repetition that is necessary.

Thanks for explaining this technique in such an easy to understand way. My brain retraining consists of reading You are the placebo from Joe Dispenza, which gave me a good theoretical background. Than I started doing yoga nidra several times a day, which made me connected with my body and less scared of symptoms, knowing I could relax 'in' the symptoms which make them less severe. A couple of months later I started listening to your UA-cam interviews about brain retraining, in and another UA-cam-channel with short practical tips. The most important insight for me was that you could see having symptoms as an opportunity to retrain your reaction to them. After 8 months doing this, almost all of my symptoms are less and I have less bad days. Only my GI-problems weren't affected. A week ago I started hypnotherapy, hoping to improve more.

I’m calling this self compassion and when I talk to myself, ask myself what I need etc. I’ve felt my mood improve, like part of me is so grateful to be heard. I had no idea I wasn’t being a kind reasonable person to myself. I believe that we all have inner wisdom that we can learn to count on rather than believing the fear and self reproach like I have had in my head all these years, with my body objecting. Fear is for special circumstances only. Brain training is essential.

I did the Alex Howard program and it's helped tremendously to stop, be aware of the thought pattern and choose another route. I obviously still get angry and cry, but the spiralling thoughts aren't causing it most of the time now.
I feel less overwhelmed, less of a failure by letting go of the perfectionism and people pleasing ways. Then the energy improved too, cause stress was wasting it.

I guess I did this in connection with relationships in my life! I don’t blame others I take responsibility for my life and I no longer look to others on how I feel… the result is harmony with others and no blame game! I guess I could do it with other things! I never really thought I could do it with Heath !! Thank you!!
I have to rebuild my home myself after hurricane Ian with long covid! I have limited money from insurance and contractors are price gouging! I ordered supplies and started one hour per day putting insulation in my attic.. I rest and do more! The plus side is the total amazement of my own accomplishment after being a couch potato for 2 yrs… struggling with symptoms!! So the power of the mind to achieve is powerful! I’m not stressed because I can take time out but daily seeing and looking at my own results to get myself out of this mess! Ceiling Drywall next !! but I’ll definitely use this tactic more so… not realizing I was already doing it!
In the past I did hypnosis tapes for weight loss but instead it worked on my fears.. I used to visualize myself in the circle ⭕️ of power and within that circle I could complete the task! It worked !! I know with long covid energy is limited but baby steps are better than no steps at all… health wise if we don’t use it we lose it and movement is essential..

Thank you so much for everything you share Raelan! 💛This will save so much money to a lot of people as even this simple technique is gonna help some for sure - at least for me in my early stages of brain retraining less was def. more :)
I wanna share some things about brain retraining that I have learned:
    - Kindness is key. Usually we want to rewire pathways that already stem from anxiety, stress or at least some pressure - so using even more pressure isn't gonna help to let go of the habit/ symptom/ reaction etc.
    - Make it your own! Brainretraining can look like many things. You can say whatever word suits you to interrupt or event make a sound or just a gesture ( I recommend a sound or a word). You can do it as simple as Raelen or dive into parts work. This means imagining that there is a part of you (a younger version of you, a scared, lonely,... verision of you) that is DOING the symptoms (or the habit) s as a coping mechanism. I guess this requires some understanding first but if we get comfortable with the theory of parts that can actually be very powerful.
Also visualize whatever makes the retraining powerful for you. If you use it for symptoms like in ME/CFS in the first part of the retraining you can visualize the symptom leaving your body, or you turning away from it, or actually turning away form it. I also love to "take the symptom" and "throw" it out the window - so metaphorically but I really DO the gesture. In the second part: Visualize what would serve you instead - really get clear on that picture. For fatigue you can visualize yourself running, dancing, cooking whateve you want in the end, when you wanna convince your brain that this is possible for you. This last step is very important - so really feel into that and make it as colorful and real as you can. But do not do perfectionism! This is something very new to most of us and it can take many weeks or months to master visualizations. But every visualization does SOMETHING. You can tell yourself as many sentences as you need, so you and your (conditioned) brain "get it" - you are save, symptoms (or a certain habit) are not necessary, but where learned, conditioned, a coping mechanism - whatever you wanna call it.
    - MAYBE most IMPORTANT thing: FEEL what you are saying during the retraining. New neuropathways are built by repetition and by INTENSITY. So if you attach a strong feeling to your desired state of being (lets say you wanna let go of stressing and rushing through things and become relaxed and approach things with ease) - the brain retraining is gonna be more effective (so really feel into what ease or a relaxed state would feel like! What would your shoulders feel like if they where at ease?) Over time you are gonna be able to believe and feel if with your whole body that the old way is trash and the new one is 1) possible and 2) sooo much more useful to you! AND THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT - not just knowing, but FEELING it (chronic illness often comes from chronic stress and this leads to difficulty "being in the body" and therefor this is important to practice again) . Or for example - you stopped your thought pattern of " I will never recover": When you tell yourself that you CAN and you really try to feel that -- How does your chest feel? Lighter? How do your arms feel? More alive? Or the same?
    - Vary the length or intensity of your brain retraining. I did Gupta first and then CFS school, both are definitely longer/ include a series of steps - but for the beginning a sentence like Realen said will definitley do or be even more powerful. Gupta comes with a short version which I find very useful, as complicated brain retraining techniques can seem overwhelming in a state of extrem fatigue for example. Also for patterns you have retrained many times already you do not have to do a complicated series of steps like it is im CFS school for example if your brain already recognizes what you are doing: Choosing the new way.
    - Ground yourself: As brain retraining is a mental activity try to balance it out with something physical. If you can also prioritize walks and being outside but also try to be "here" when you are doing the retraining. Otherwise we get to be very much in our head, so brain retraining can make dissociation worse in my experience if you do not ground/ stay present in your body - like I explained in the second point - during the retraining, but also in every day life.
    - AT LAST: tell the people around you. Explain it to them with a metaphor like Raelens - it makes sense also for very rational and sceptical people - make clear that there is a scientific background and that therefor you take this seriously and that you need Space to do this technique. Meaning: You will need to step out of a room, you need time in the mornings for example to retrain your brain etc.
So this is what I learned after doing brain retraining for many months. I could get rid of many symptoms I had and my fatigue is much much better - so this shit works I am telling you! I hope people who need it right now will find that! 💛

Through your channel and others, I’ve become a believer in brain retraining. So your channel is providing me much needed optimism for my husband’s improvement or recovery. The challenge is gently exposing sceptic husband to the possibility of recovery through a completely non-pharma method. So I am especially interested in your interviews with those who take a more scientific approach. Just want to thank you and encourage you as you continue in your journey through heart felt desire to help others. You make it look easy, but I am certain it is hard work!

I hadn't heard of brain training, but over a year ago, I would tell myself, "My job is to sleep." I'd say that that started me on a path to healing. Probably the most effective times were when I would be resting, relaxing muscles, and would think, "Yes, this is the right thing to be doing. Good job. Just keep relaxing. Drift off."

So good, Raelan! What a great summary of brain rewiring. I always use the path in the bush as an analogy. I live next to a forest in Australia 🇦🇺 and talk about going down Kangaroo tracks which can become dirt roads over time and eventually freeways. This is great if it's something we want to wire into our brain! But if not, we have to forge new paths and it's hard, time consuming, difficult and scratchy at first! I was extremely sick, eventually did a gut healing program and came out of significant depression which also helped some of my random symptoms including my chronic fatigue but still could only eat a few foods. Then I did DNRS and it changed everything very quickly! I'm around 80% healed, I suppose, have started partime work and studying to teach recovery to others! Thanks for what you do, so much, it's invaluable. You're a superstar, so patient with those you interview, so compassionate about their journey of suffering and so beautifully celebratory (is that a word?) about their health wins. xxx

Totally agree Jennifer , it can run deep and have many layers. I'm a super sensitive empath myself and have c ptsd as well. I'm considering brain retraining but will combine it with a lot of nervous system regulations and somatic work too. I have struggled with my health for 20 years and I can see only now it goes all the way back to not getting a loving secure bond to my mother, so I have never felt safe in the world, had healthy boundaries or fully trusted people. I got negative core beliefs plus experiences that are also ingrained in my nervous system. I guess we must dive deep into our self and investigate, test out different tools and systems, do self love and self care, reparent our selves.

I’m so glad for those that found recovery from Brain retraining techniques and I agree that allowing the body to rest and digest is essential for anyone with post viral fatigue. However, the danger in implying that you have the power to control your fatigue is only helpful for those whose anxiety and personality type is accelerating their symptoms. If your personality is not one to freak out and over push yourself when you have these symptoms and you allow you body to rest and digest yet you are still experiencing these symptoms then all the brain training won’t help. Your video is minimizing those people. The cause could be difficult to identify but because of videos like this people don’t take them seriously.

You know, some months ago I was writing a novel about mercy, a kind of Christian novel. I thought I had this kind of “Masterpiece” in my hands and I needed, I had the obligation, to write it as soon as posible. Now I’m ill, hardly can go from my room to the bathroom (certainly cannot write) and your video has “illuminated” me about why God could do this to me in the middle of a “holly task”. The answer was always before my eyes: How could I write a novel about mercy, if I do not have any mercy for me? That’s all. Thank you for the video and hope God bless you a lot.
Note: sorry, english is not my native language.

I am excited to try it again now that I'm free of that chronically stressful relationship.

I was even telling my past self(in the past) to make choices that my future(would be now) self would thank me for.... I slightly went off track with that because I didn't change the patterns .... thanks so much for your great advice here.... in a few minutes you have given the greatest gift to us for free. You are doing such a great and "easy to take in" work in helping brain retrainers getting tools and hope, thank you❤
Im in a post covid and have been for some years, I have most of the time been living (almost) as usual concerning work, family and keep my excercise as a part of my life (even thou not as before). I started with DNRS but am now using diffrent tools from diffrent programs and recovering experiences. Right now in a ebb with scary new and old symptoms (this is where I struggle the most, when things get scary to stay in the belive that this is limbic and not anything worse). I would love to hear recovery stories from people that was not on the rock bottom, more in the middle and could live life a bit as before and at the same time be able to calm that nervous system down. Is there any stories like that avalible in your library? Thank you for a great page🙏❤

I find it really difficult to tell myself that the symptoms aren't damaging me... because I don't fully believe that. I wish I did! But I can't help but obsess over the extreme brain fog aka brain inflammation and the fact that it's damaging neurons in my brain and causing long term memory and cognition impairment. Because I strongly believe that this is scientifically the case I find it really hard to feel safe when its happening. I'd love to know a thought process that can help me calm down in this situation because it is really very distressing... both the symptom and the resulting emotions that arise from it.

    • @IrisHiggins
      @IrisHiggins Рік тому +3

This may or may not be helpful for you but one thing that helps me is to change my thought process from a negative “what if” to a positive “what if.” My brain is worrying about the symptoms and triggers, and thinking, “what if…” and then imagining all the negative consequences. I know for myself that this thinking keeps me stuck in a fear based way of living. So I very consciously tell myself that I’m going to play “what if” and focus instead on all the positive things that could happen. What if…and then insert all the positive dreams you have that maybe you don’t let yourself think about because you think they’re out of your reach. And just continue stubbornly focusing on that light no matter how many times you have to redirect your thinking.

I have tried DNRS and I had success treating mold sensitivity. I was to weak to continue doing it unfortunately. Currently I am doing Bee Venom Therapy in order to treat Lyme and that helps with the memory, concentration energy and shortness of breath. I still have some food intolerances, so I am afraid I will have to do DNRS again in order to treat those. I find it really hard when feeling exhausted to each time come up with some great visualization, as required by the DNRS. Do you maybe know someone who would have many recordings of these visualizations? Would you maybe be able to organize an archive with those? They could help the weakest and the sickest ones. Thanks.

    • @kathy.7475
      @kathy.7475 Рік тому

I’m doing DNRS. The visualizations don’t have to be great ones. You can just make something up. Your brain can’t tell the difference between an actual experience and a made up one. Start small and work your way up. It will get easier. Just don’t give up.

You could imagine yourself doing an activity and enjoying it, reteaching yourself that it is safe! You can start small to build up your stamina (and starting small helps with consistency ). If you’ve built up a lot of fear around activities, instead of imagining yourself crashing afterwards, visualize that you feel comfort and joy, or other positive emotions. You’ve got this!

I'm not sure if you should try to do it anyway, while trying to have a calmer mindset OR if you should back off from the activity and once your body knows that you're listening to it and will take care of it, it will then allow you to do more and more. I'm torn!
