I know you probably didn't know him, but Yana was played by one of the UK's best and most celebrated actors, Sir Derek Jacobi. The way he effortlessly turned from a bumbling human to the dark Master shows how good he is.

When Sir Thomas More coined the name "Utopia", he hid a little secret message in the name.
It derives from the Greek for ou "not" + topos "place".
Utopia means "nowhere". Nowhere is Utopia.
He was implicitly saying that it's not possible and could not exist.

The Master is probably the most interesting of the Doctor's classic enemies. Another renegade Time Lord who is the Doctor's evil opposite. He goes around sowing chaos and trying to gain power while the Doctor tries to help people and fix things. Sir Derek Jacobi, who plays Professor Yana, is a British acting legend, but probably not so well known in the US. His change of expression from kindly Professor Yana to the deranged Master is so good.

@@MuchWhitteringand there's more than just that one. It is annoying that this is the only one BBC considers a three parter even though all the other (non-official) three parters have a similar format. A singular episode doing it's own thing and is apparently standalone until something shocking happens in the last ten minutes which in turn makes it lead into the final two episodes. Like the big bad of this finale is the Master, but we don't get to be aware of him until this episode's final moments.
Anyone who doesn't want spoilers, don't look further. But here are the stories which I consider as three parters...
      Series 3 finale
I can see two possible ones for Series 4, but I don't really count them. To me, they're both three parters in the same way one could count S5 episode 11 leading into 12/13 to be one
      Series 9 finale
The Monk trilogy in Series could count, but then you could also argue that it intertwines with the Doctor being blind

In terms of individual antagonists the Master is the most iconic one for the Doctor going all the way back to his introduction vs the Third Doctor. The Doctor and the Master have a long and complicated personal relationship, which adds a layer to their interactions that the Doctor doesn’t have with many other enemies and none to the same degree. The Master’s return was a big deal and they really killed it with both actors the cast to play him in his return story.

If you go back to the episode 42, you will notice an early hint of who the Master is - if you listen in the final scene of Martha's mother and the blonde woman, you can hear the Masters theme music playing in the background as they discuss the election. Clever musical foreshadowing!

2-parters are annoying enough, but this one has to be a 3-parter of course. I'm probably too late in saying this but don't start Torchwood Season 2 until after you finish Doctor Who Season 3. This 3-parter is kinda like a fixed point that both shows orbit around just for this brief time lol

The Master was introduced in the early 70’s as a time lord that was opposite to the 3rd Doctor. The show runners of that time had a plan, and scripts written, to conclude the 3rd doctors run with a fight between the doctor and the master showing that the Master is not another time lord, but the evil half of the doctor. Sadly, months before this, actor Roger Delgado died in a car crash in Spain and they had to write the Master out and create new scripts. This actually enabled them to bring him back later on, which would not have happened with the original scripts. During the 6th doctors run they brought this idea back as the Valyard. You will get a lot of requests for this…after the next 2 episodes, there is a mini episode called “Time Crash”. Really should watch it. Not gonna spoil anything, but there is a certain character that mentions the master and asks if he still has that rubbish beard. This is a nod to Delgado having a Van Dyke, evil Spock beard. It was also an in joke from Russel T Davies as a “beard” is slang for a gay man’s fake wife to hide that he is gay. Think Rick Hudson era.

The Master like the Daleks and the Cybermen all from Classic Who is another one of the Doctor's oldest enemies.
While John Simm the newly regenerated Master is great I would had like to have had Derek Jacobi as The Master for an episode or two than the 30 seconds we get of him as that character.
