Over the last few years, I have watched several UA-cam videos and read several articles on “productivity” systems. They are all well-conceived and valuable to users.
Sometimes, they are called “project management” or “task management” systems. Regardless, their focus is on “tasks/activities”. They can cause users to become “masters of the minutia”.
This is in contrast to a person’s “objectives”. Sometimes the word “goals” or the term “end results” is used to mean the same thing as the word “objectives”. Regardless of the word/term used, I am talking about a condition, a situation, or a state of affairs that a person wants later in his/her life. That may be wanted just a couple months from now or many years.
“Tasks/Activities” are merely the “means to the ends”. It is your “objectives” (end results) that are far more important than “tasks/activities”.
Consequently, I highly recommend that people who develop “productivity” systems incorporate the development of “objectives” into the design of their systems and encourage users to start by defining their “objectives”.
And therefore, each person should spend a fair amount time defining his/her “objectives”, both short term ones, preferably medium terms, and maybe even long term ones. Add them to whatever “productivity” system you use. It is important to write them down, because, over time, you will modify / refine your “objectives” and it will be important that you explicitly acknowledge those changes and modify your “tasks/activities”, accordingly.
To help with defining your “objectives”, I’ve created a list of “categories” of objectives to get your thinking started. I believe it to be a comprehensive list. Here it is.
* Personal / Professional Relationship
* Physical / Health Condition
* Mental / Intellectual Condition
* Emotional / Psychological Condition
* Spiritual Condition
* Wealth / Financial Condition
* Security / Safety Condition
* Fame / Reputation
* Power / Influence
* Skill / Capability
* Possession / Property (Things you have / own)
* Location / Place (Where you primarily reside)
Again, note. These are “categories” of “objectives”, not “objectives” in and of themselves.
Finally, the “tasks/activities” in whatever productivity system you use need to be in support of and linked to one or more of your “objectives”. If some “task/activity” isn’t, you need to ask yourself, “why am I doing this?” - - - In some productivity systems, it is easy to create the links by adding tags to your “tasks/activities”.
thank you for the additional insight :)
well said friend, i myself am always struggling with identifying the differences between all these terms and it hampers any of my progress
Thank you Mr. Mavrick I can now set up a task list only to ignore it and procrastinate anyways.
that is a certified bruh moment 😵💫
u should acc download obsidian though 😈
Well I mean… isn’t that what a task manager is tho?
This is why I find snooze options so valuable (using MS Outlook at work). If something really needs doing today it goes in my calendar. Everything else (all the nice to haves) I can snooze indefinitely until I get round to them.
You got to make a habit of spending ~+5 minutes a day going through you up to ~120 reminders, and snooze some for up to two weeks. Most days I only have about 30 reminders pop up. You can quickly re-read an email and see if you understand it today better than before, and you prioritisation may be clearer the next day than before, so you feel OK to snooze something for two weeks.
You got me up and running with Todoist as well as embedding it into Obsidian in 20 min. Exquisite quality and value! thanks!
ayyy, really happy to hear that even someone who doesn't use todoist found the video easy to understand. hope it fits into your workflow!
@@itsjohnmavrick Yeah. Works really well. Especially having an outside-obsidian to-list application. Simplifies the distinction between 'deletable' tasks and actual notes. Thanks again for the content!
@@Dee-bk3gk npnp :D
I do this too, and it works really well. Todoist is a much better place to put my tasks than tasks inside Obsidian. And with this plugin I get the best of two world. Tasks in Todoist - all knowledge in Obsidian.
Integrating todoist with obsidian is very slick. Nicely demonstrated and explained. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
yeah, its cool being able to combine two apps good at their own thing into one seamless system is 🤯
and tyty :)
Awesome video, thanks!
Awesome thanks! I couldn't get the code to work but figured out I had to disable and enable the todoist plugin after entering my API.
interesting, i dont think ive had to do that before
I wish they would completely incorporate Todoist in Obsidian
unfortunately i think the only major app that has worked with an official api integration has been Readwise and Pieces 🥲
Thank you so much. I was waiting this video heheh. And you have covered all my doubts about using the app with in daily/weekly notes. Now, I need to test and adjust to my needs. Thank you again.
Btw, for those who are in doubt: I HIGHLY recommend John Mavrick's Ultimate Starter Vault: It helps you in the learning curve in the beginning with references to lectures about PKM, Second Brain and other methods, as well as helping to build the foundations of a working Vault. You will only need to tweak her Vault to your own taste/needs.
Yeah, if you haven't checked already, the queries should be in the [[Todoist Sync Plugin]] note to which you can just copy paste. This is probably the final change I'll make to my tasks, the newly released projects plugin seems promising too but it makes my vault crash every time I try to use it ;-;
And thank you for vouching for my vault hehe, too kind of you :,)
Any other workflows/videos you would be interested in?
@@itsjohnmavrick I haven't =( Sorry for the late reply. You know: study+work+etc.
I'm trying to finish a book before spend one more time tweaking to use: Google Calendar+Todoist+Obsidian(and Habitica too), all merged/synchronized. And thanks for the tip to use Habitica for habits and Todoist for ToDo's. It makes sense!
And you deserve it. A true gentleman.
For now, my only wish/doubt is: I don't know if Todoist is capable of ask me daily(like an Obsidian daily note): "What I need To Do?" - So I would put some things down and, when the week ends, the App reminds me of ToDos that I haven't finished yet.
Like a note in the last day of the week: "Hey, these are the things that you have not done yet! Want to bring it to the next week?"
I don't know if I made myself clear, srry 😅
Thanks in advance!
@@arnouthpessoa In the todoist queries and app you will be able to see your "overdue" tasks that you haven't completed from previous days, and in the app you can choose to reschedule them to today or to move them to another date.
If you add the weekly query to your weekly note then you can also see what tasks you haven't completed. The only issue is that it's more convenient to modify and reschedule on the app rather than Obsidian.
@@itsjohnmavrick Thanks for your response o//
And I don't know if you did it yourself/can but a suggestion for a future video: Teaching how to publish a Vault without Obsidian Publish 🙏
@@arnouthpessoa I used to use quartz (which I think there is a good video on) but I've stopepd using it. Thanks for the reminder though! If I do end up hosting some notes online again I'll definitely make a video on it.
Which theme do you use? I really like the way this theme displays the due date and tags :)
I use minimal theme :)
Is there any way for the todoist description to show up in Obsidian? For example, I have a task which has a description of what to do in list form and it would be great to be able to see that too.
not sure, could be a suggestion you give to the developer as it would be pretty useful for lots of others as well !
Does the Tasks in the daily note persist? Eg. If I look back at my daily note from one month back, will it be able to say the tasks I completed that day? or will the query show current pending tasks?
nope unless you view it in todoist or use a plugin to show completed todoist tasks
How did you get the ToDoIst content to look like it does on the ToDoIst app in Obsidian? The icons are really big on obsidian for me and everything is directly below the task item instead of indented like you have it with the calendar and the label taking space on the same line.
to be honest I don't use todoist anymore so I'm not sure if this was changed in a new update of the plugin, have you tried using it using the default theme to see if that was the issue?
Really insightful video! Is that the Bunny Girl Senpai soundtrack in the background lol?
😎 yes it is haha
@@itsjohnmavrick Eyy a certified classic, btw have you found a way to keep the tasks shown on the page even if you've completed them? Cause when looking back on daily and weekly reviews, you won't know what tasks you did if it fades away after completion.
Since the plugin only pulls in the tasks from todoist, I might as well just keep todoist open as a small sidebar on my main screen. If there was a plugin that would pull my tasks into the daily note that be awesome but then I'd end up with duplication. I gave up (again) managing my tasks in obsidian
still great video and tutorial though!!
Why can't you pull task into your daily note using this? I thought that was the whole purpose of the query code inside the code fence embeded in a note?
Hi! Is there a way to search the obsidian vault for obsidian tasks, in a similar manner that you can search for "regular" tasks?
hi! i'm not entirely sure if i understood your comment, but if you're familiar with dataview, you can choose to only search for all markdown tasks in your obsidian vault via something like this:
```dataview
task from ""
```
If you have a lot of tasks, this will make your pc lag.
@@itsjohnmavrick Thanks so much! I didn't phrase it well. Does the Todoist plugin treat Todoists tasks AS markdown tasks? (I don't think it does). Thanks!!
@@Ericufyou're correct
could we sync the todoist plugin to the daily planner in obsidian ? thanks in advice
i have not gotten it to do so :( i would recommend syncing todoist with google calendar instead
@@itsjohnmavrick oh ok thanks mate
Hey thank you for the video! Non-tech here.. I have written the query but get the following error: "Error: Unable to parse as YAML or JSON". Am I missing anything? Thanks in advance.
What query did you write? Can you paste it here? Do you have an extra or missing comma?
Hello @@itsjohnmavrick, now I don't get an error cos i have enabled JSON in dataview, I think.. Should I disable dataview?
This is what I wrote:
```
todoist
{
"name": "Header Name",
"filter": "(overdue | today | no due date) & #Project |
/Section & @label",
"sorting": ["date", "priority"],
"group": true
}
```
@@AndreiaRuivo todoist should be on the same line as the first ```
So this doesn't actually allow you to integrate the power of Obsidian's linking with Todoist? It just shows you a list of tasks?
no, since they're different platforms without a proper integration, this plugin is using their public api, nothing special.
9:05 How do I add a section? I tried / which didn't worked, and I tried # as well as ## which didn't worked. :(
It should look something like this, is capitalization correct?
```todoist
{
"name": "Periodic Reviews",
"filter": "#misc & /periodicReviews",
"sorting": ["date", "priority"]
}
```
@@itsjohnmavrick This worked. Thank you :D
I have a problem, i ll give an example to understand me
- i creat a daily note for 2022-11-20 then i put my todoist list in it with "today" filter
Then tommorw i make new daily note for 2022-11-21 and i put my todoist again
When i come back to 2022-11-20 i see my today todoist in both yesterday and today note
How can i fix that ? How can i make every daily note separated?
Unfortunately this is part of the query :( it only will show TODAY's tasks because of the way it is set up, to see a certain day's tasks you would have to use templater variables to choose specifically what day you want to show.
@@itsjohnmavrick its fine i'll find a way to figure it out, thx you love your content :D
Hello, I'm having similar issue. Did find a solution for it?
can your system handle dependent tasks? Parent task > multiple subtasks
I'm pretty sure it does show nested tasks
