10 things (and more) you need as a Newborn Photographer

  • In this video I'm talking about ten things (and more) which I think you need as a Newborn Photographer.
    I'm a full-time photographer in the Netherlands and I'm planning on showing you a but more of my life as a photographer. Are you interested in photography? Are you looking for a free-online Photography course? Do you want to see the inside of a Photo Studio? Then please, watch my videos and subscribe to my channel!
    I'm planning on sharing videos in which I show you my typical work-week as a photographer. I will give you tips & tricks concerning photography, photo shoots, backdrops, studio props, camera settings (iso, aperture, shutter speed, white balance), photoshoot outfits, photoshoot make-up etc.
Ik zal videos maken over camera instellingen (iso, sluitertijd, diafragma, wit-balans), studio achtergronden, fotoshoot outfits, fotoshoot make-up enz.
    IMPORTANT
    If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don't have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don't experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many 'pinterest poses' are composites. Please, don't try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

    I will be completing my 4th course through NYIP school and this last course will be newborn photography, I a,ready have a degree in professional photography, wedding photography, digital editing techniques and soon newborn photography and I have been doing this school since 2012!, it’s legit and I had to pay a tuition, buy books, take tests and all that and it’s truly helped me learn. Now I need you Fenna to teach me about things I need for my studio ❤

    I am an NICU nurse who loves photography! I've never been taught but enjoy taking photographs whenever I can in my spare time. For the past few months I have been thinking deeply about starting something in photography and have sparked a small dream to one day do newborn photography! :) Your channel so far has been super informative, and your approach and skills are really inspiring me to move forward and look into cameras, courses/classes, etc! Hoping that as the years pass I slowly gain more skills and am able to finally do some cute shots :)

    I started with my very first photo session a newborn :) but I also have 2 children and 15 years experience with babies. So I am comfortable with it. Also I was a teacher, so I LOVE education and have been watching videos and taking one on one lessons. I also have my first aid, CPR and infant CPR certificates.

    I agree with you totally. Becoming a photographer first, training, education, investing in your yourself, your studio, your equipment. This is my 11th year as a newborn photographer and I can’t believe how many people just become a newborn photographer. As you say as well, newborn photography is not as easy as people think, so many people start and then they realize what goes into it and they give up. It has to be a passion. I always wanted to be a photographer from little and I used to pour over Anne Geddes books and calendars growing up, I always loved babies and especially newborns. Thank you.

    Very good tips, especially the “you don’t become a newborn photographer quickly” there is so much to learn and safety is the biggest issue for me when I see new photogs out there handling babies, and yes... new moms are always so overprotective so you better handle that sweet baby like gold :) thanks for the video!

My Favourite Lense is my Nikon 85mm, 1.8... now i can’t decide between a 50mm or 35mm for the Babyshooting 😌

    I feel very lucky considering I studied to become a midwife and have been a hobby photographer for 10 years. And I agree, knowing how to handle the babies and know what they need, is the number one priority and does take up 90% of yoru time during these shoots.
    So all in all: Great tips!

    Hello, I'd like to know how you started with your business, did you have a studio right away or did this take time? What variety of props etc did you have? How did you get to where you are today with clients, what marketing etc did you need to do to get your name out there? Was it slow going at first? How long did it take before you were able to make this your full time job?
    I've just set up my own studio after many many years of thinking about it, 8 years ago now since i graduated university. Currently things are going quite slowly and I am still working my full time job along side my photography.
    Any tips, advice and personal experience in the early days of starting your studio would be amazing. I'd love to make my studio my full time job :)
    Keep up the great work xxx :)

    Hi Fenna, great video! Zou je eens een video willen maken over de posing kussentje? Hoe je die gebruikt ?
    En die susher het schijnt dat het geluid niet harder mag klinken als je koelkast/vriezer hou jij nog rekening met waar je hem legt en hoe hard hij staat?

    • @FennaPhotography
      @FennaPhotography  6 років тому

      Ik heb een video over de posing pillows op mn lijstje gezet :) Leuk idee! Ik zet de shusher niet hard en deze ligt aan de kant van mijn licht zo'n 40cm bij de baby vandaan. De vergelijking met de koelkast ken ik eerlijk gezegd niet, maar ik moet ook zeggen dat onze koelkast/vriezer echt geen geluid maakt. Veel ouders vinden het een geweldig apparaatje en willen er prive ook 1 kopen voor hun baby :D

I bought several but they are really thin and wrinkly, and I think I'm going mad after buying like 10 pieces that isn't what i look for. I really love the look of yours. Maybe take some nice pictures of your home studio or a nice 1 minute video clip and share this on your webpage. This way, you can send them the link and have them look for themselves how a home studio can be perfectly professional, clean, spacious and comfortable. I actually moved back from commercial studio space to a home studio and I love it! However, I have a separate entrance from the street and the studio space has it's own toilet/kitchen area, so they don't enter my home.

      I was told that the strength and direction of the flash does matter. I use my speedlight at a lower setting (like 1/64) and it's pointed inwards, so actually away from the baby. The silver inside of the softbox reflects the light gently towards the baby and it can be compared to a large window. I love soft feathered light and i noticed by using my light this was, even babies with their eyes wide open don't blink or respond to the soft flash. Hope this answer helps

    You have some good tips for sure. But you always come as a person who thinks about profit with all that company talk, and investing in education and that your expertise should raises your profit. You are drifting away from making a memorable moment for the baby and his parents and focusing more on the business aspect. And I have to say I personally know so many photographers that are not professional (Not majored in photography) and they take really good pics even compared to you some are honestly better. Passion is the key. Education, props, gear is all secondary. Yes they make better shots but the picture that the passion person takes before pressing the camera trigger is what counts. You make it sound impossible for people who are not majored in photography to be a newborn photographers which I hate. And that compression with the doctor... like WHAT? How do you compare taking photos to saving lives??

    • @FennaPhotography
      @FennaPhotography  4 роки тому

      Thank you for sharing your opinion. I didn't think I would come across as someone who thinks more about profit than the joy of photographing beautiful moments. I actually offer my videos for free, since profit is really not on the top of my list. I love encouraging, inspiring and motivating other photographers. Photography is my hobby, my passion and something I just really love doing. I don't have a major in photography myself (I have a BBA), but I think the safety of fragile Newborn babies is and always will be the most important. That's why I encourage people to first learn about photography (which you can do from home, watching youtube videos about aperture, shutter speed, iso, white balance, composition, editing etc) and start practicing taking pictures of friends/family/nature/pets... You can do all this from the comfort of your home. Passion is the key, but photographing a baby who is, for example, uncomfortable, too hot/cold, exposed to harsh materials... wouldn't be great as a memorable moment for the parents. I must admit I'm not the best photographer out there. Maybe check my newest videos to see how I'm still improving and educating myself as well :)

    • @Esso2o2o
      @Esso2o2o 4 роки тому

      @@FennaPhotography Well not gonna lie. I miss understood you, when you talked about education. Maybe you meant researching (self study) I thought you meant an actual degree in photography by "education" and yes 100% baby safety comes before anything. I am sorry because I was harsh especially that you seem like a nice person. And to be honest. My wife learned so much from you and she plays your videos at home almost all the time (she wants to be a newborn photographer) and usually I dont pay attention to the videos since its not something that I am interested in (photography I mean) but yesterday I paid attention to this video. And honestly it was really well done video. But the moment you started talking about education and how important it is (in a way that you made it seem essential) and if you dont have, you will never be a newborn photographer. Again that was me thinking when you said education you meant an actual degree in photography. I became blinded with anger since my wife didnt actual study that major at the university and you are like a roll model for her and she looks up for you. She didnt say it but definitely I felt that she was a bit disappointed by the "education" part. And when she knew about the comment I wrote she was really upset with me and she also defended you by saying that maybe she meant research instead of education (degree). Anyways what I am trying to say. I am truly sorry you are an amazing person. As well as an awesome newborn photographer and the reason I say that is the transformation you made my wife go through from knowing so little to producing really nice and high quality newborn pics just by watching you. You are true an amazing mentor and I you dont seem like a person who thinks about the profit, that was the anger inside me talking. Again I am very sorry and I really appreciate what you have given of videos for absolutely free.
