This is indeed a surprise treat from VoicePlay for the Christmas season.
It's not gaining much traction since it's such a non popular holiday song. But I love that they took the opportunity as an independent group to honor one of the greats. Most signed artists are ruled by corporations that would have nixed this cover.

Layne would probably love that you called that one sound a 'Roger Rabbit'. His favorite cartoon. I believe that's why his studio is named PattyCake Productions.
Your comment about Cesar's 'Clau....' (no s) also brought to my attention that the choice to leave off the s makes Clau(s) rhyme with Eli's 'feel like straw'. I had not noticed that before.
And J's Satchmo Scat? Not only so well executed, but it didn't even sound strained. It sounded easy for him. Hard enough to do, but to make us think it was easy? Woweee!
I also love that we got to hear a little of J's bass up front in this. In the past he has taken the bass line when Geoff was lead, but I don't think we have heard him do bass in a lead line before. Well, I guess he did in Little Mermaid but it sounded so similar to a line Geoff had already sung that it's easy to forget he 'stole' the line there. Anyway - reminds us that the US Navy classifies him as a bass for the Sea Chanters.
And as for how little love this song gets - the only other cover of it that I know of is Brian Setzer (of Stray Cats' fame) and his orchestra.

Oh, first comment! This song scared me as a kid, as much as I love Louis Armstrong's voice. But you're right, this is charming and fun, and I enjoy it immensely! Great reaction! 💚❤

I first heard this song from Harry Connick Jr and shortly thereafter by the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Because it was so unusual I did a little research to figure out where this was all my life and discovered that Louis Armstrong did it.
I don’t think he would’ve recognized it the way that these guys did it😂. I really enjoyed the Satchmo improv that J did at the end. It’s a nice tribute to the original artist.
They used a robotic arm camera for this so the camera moved and they looked where the camera. They did this song several years ago on their album called Peppermint Winter and it’s a different vibe. Maybe because I first heard it from Harry Connick Jr, but I’ve always thought this sounded like a New Orleans sound song and this really gives me that same feeling.
Did you notice that during the “running and running, he’s coming to get you” section all the guys are reaching for J just like they were all after him in Thriller. Coincidence?🤔

Great reaction. I think you are the first reactor to see or at least note the VP icon on the tree.

Thanks for another enjoyable and informative VoicePlay reaction to their latest Christmas tune. Apparently, they used to perform a different arrangement of this live in their pre-pandemic touring days. Always good to see J. back with the guys. He does a great Louis Armstrong tribute. Layne had a new toy to use for this one...they used a robotic arm with multiple cameras. Eli had to connect his computer with the lighting cues to the robotic arm’s computer to sync everything up.

Thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play . 9 years ago Voice Play did a song called Santa And I Know It. It's from their Peppermint Window Sampler. I think it is the most awesome Christmas song they've ever done. So totally different from anything they've ever done. Please do a reaction to it for us please. It's just audio but no visual. You will love it just the same.

I loved seeing your enjoyment of this that matched my own.
I believe the whistling was Layne. He did the arrangement, and we got to hear his demo that he put out for the guys. In it he does all the parts, and the whistling sounded identical. Since Layne couldn’t do both parts for the video, Cesar mimed doing the whistling while Layne carried on with the percussion. (The second time you hear whistling, Cesar is obviously singing another part)

David Johansson of the New York Dolls, in his Lounge Singer persona, Buster Poindexter, also covered this. A very good cover, well worth the watch. Also, he has a voice that handles Armstrong's very well.

Great reaction! I love Voiceplay's rendition, yet it seems to have been overshadowed a bit by Geoff's release on the same day. It's actually VP's third arrangement of this song! The first was on their 2012 Christmas album and the second was for liveshows.

I'm old enough to remember this one but don't. It did not get a lot of radio play back in the day. And there aren't many artists who would try his voice.

Ella Fitzgerald did it once, for a line or two. I believe it's her version of Mack the Knife. She forgets the lyrics and then starts scatting and extemporizing her own lyrics. I found it! ua-cam.com/video/6vXAtVbZbkI/v-deo.htmlsi=xOuFOdjHc9L05igZ

Louis Armstrong did this in 1952. I think the late great Satchmo really likes J None since he loans his voice to him near the end of the song! Both VoicePlay and Geoff were on point for these. Astonishing.

Thank you SO much for properly pronouncing Mr. Armstrong's first name. It's so consistently pronounced incorrectly and it was a life-long aggravation to him. As well, a hugely insightful reaction and education.

Thanks for saying "Louis" instead of "Louie". It's what he preferred but didn't feel he could insist on.
