Bit of trivia. In "Tales from the Crypt", Peter Cushing's performance was steeped in pain because he recently lost his wife. He was suffering badly due to his loss. Brings new meaning to the term "suffering for his/her art". A real trooper to the end.
That’s a pretty unassailable ranking, and I love your different categories of ranking as well, brilliant. Agreed on Dr. Terror having the best wraparound story, just perfection. I think Dr. Terror is my fave because it’s the first one I ever saw, on telly when I was a young lad in the early ‘80s, and it really stuck with me, mainly due to the wraparound and the EXCELLENT segment with Christopher Lee and Michael Gough, though I also really like the Voodoo segment. The other three segments are only ok, granted, but it’s still way up there for me because of its strengths. Tales From the Crypt is #2 for me. Peter Cushing as Grimsdyke the dustman is one of the high points of his career IMO. Absolutely heartbreaking, and a killer comeuppance for the asswipe across the street!
_House That Dripped Blood_ was Amicus's *finest hour:* The dreamy cinematography of the countryside... the gravitas Cushing, Lee and Denholm Elliot bring... the sexiness which Ingrid brings... the atmosphere of the house. It was their best work.
#7. Torture Garden #6. From Beyond the Grave #5. Dr. Terror #4. Vault of Horror #3. House that Dripped Blood #2. Asylum #1. Tales from the Crypt IMHO Thanks for the great videos!! Make sure you review Monster Club, The Uncanny, and Tales that Witness Madness!!
My favorite is Tales from the Crypt. Maybe because it's how I was introduced to Amicus?? I've always loved Anthologies anyway, so these quickly became some of my favorites. I also like a bunch of others; Trilogy of Terror, Body Bags, Two Evil Eyes. I grew up Loving Stephen King's Cat's Eye - I rewatched my VHS so often I basically killed it😆😆. They are my comfort movies🖤🖤🖤.
In the House that dripped blood the over the hill actor who played along side Ingird Pitt was Jon Pertwee who played Doc Who (3rd Doc) in Vault the artist is Tom Baker who the 4rth Doctor.
Absolutely SPOT ON!! "The House That Dripped Blood" is one of my favorites as well. It's my go-to "My day has sucked let's watch something to make me feel better" movie. A little scary stuff, a little funny stuff. I especially love the vampire/actor segment. And what a hoot to see Christopher Lee be scared OF something instead of making other people scared of him! As an aside, did you know that the actress who plays Donald Pleasence's daughter in "From Beyond the Grave" is his daughter in real life?
I love Vault of Horror!! Incidently Glynis Johns died earlier this year aged 100. From beyond the grave is my absolute favourite, followed by The House that dripped blood, Tales from the crypt, Vault of horror, Asylum, then Dr Terror's House of horrors. I've never seen Torture Garden.
House is the ultimate comfort horror. So cozy. My tlranking would be... 1. House 2. Dr Terror 3. Asylum 4. Beyond 5. Crypt 6. Torture 7. Vault. I'm not a huge fan of Monster Club, but Tales that Witness Madness is pretty good as well.
Did you notice the white Jaguar in tales of the crypt It also shows up in the house that dripped blood or asylum it belonged to Milton Subotsky who serves as producer on many of the films. His white Jaguar also show up in a few other amicus projects
Here is my Amicus list; 1) House that dripped blood, 2) Dr Terror's House of Horror, 3) Tales from the crypt, 4) Asylum, 5) From beyond the grave, 6) Torture Garden, 7) Vault of Horror.
For From A Whisper to a Scream: The first guy lowballs what the mirror is worth and that's why something bad happens to him, the last guy was 100% honest and doesn't try at all to cheat or steal, so he gets to live.
Loved these movies as a kid, when they were regularly on British TV. Fantastic to see them covered so comprehensively, great job. If you were to make your ultimate Amicus portmanteau what 4 or 5 segments would you include?
I hate to be pedantic but in Asylum , the crazy doctor Robert Powell needs to find is called Dr Starr not Dr Stein. Great review btw. Really loved this series . Would like to see you review The Monster Club soon.
I love all those movies = perhaps it's nostalgia, as I saw them a lot growing up in the 80s. they were. alongside Hammer and Universal, my introduction to horror as a kid (I was 4!). I've been watching these movies over 40 years, and I still love them. I expect they will still be favoured when I'm in my 80s! Yup, I'm gonna be that old horror geezer......
Personally I wouldn't even add the Asylum to this list. Found it boring and hardly surprising at the end. LOVED Peter Cushing as an antique dealer. And your so right about Peter Cushing as that kindly old man, so very sympathetic and sad. And LMAO on the song "I have walked 10,000 miles" . That was perfect!
Very similar to a @HauntedBlowfish video from last week (a channel with 3K subs and deserving of a lot more)... simultaneous invention or something more sinister afoot?!
I think the House That Dripped Blood wrap around is great! It's both the first and last story about a detective's investigation that leads to a mysterious house where he heeds no warning and meets his end, but we all knew about that house. Didn't we?
What a fun video! I've seen all of these except "Asylum," but that will be remedied before the week is over! Cushing is my 2nd favorite actor of all time (after Sean Connery)
I love all these moves. Amicus were way better than Hammer imo. The Monster Club and the two Dr Phibes movies are great too, all starring Vincent Price.
Tales From the Crypt is my #1. It's the only one where most of the segments are legitimately scary. Asylum is probably #2. I think House That Dripped Blood is fun, but rather anemic.
Very good ranking. Maybe you should do your seven favorite segments from the Amicus anthology films. Don't feel compelled to pick one from each movie, but just the seven that you like the best and why.
So glad you showed the poster for The Tales That Witness Madness because I always mix up Joan Collins' segments in that and Tales From The Crypt, and was wondering where the tree was. 😂
Why do you think Hammer never did an anthology film? They were evidently popular enough for Amicus to turn out several, I wonder why Hammer didn’t jump on that bandwagon?
Well if you've never seen Hammer House of Horrors then you are in for a treat. An entire season of short stories by Hammer!!! The one with Cushing is the best ofc.
Hammer was more focused on being the new "Universal studios" of horror with franchise type material. They didn't want to copy Amicus, and they clearly didn't need to.
Hi Daniel! Love a good horror anthology. Some ofy favorites are Vault of Horror, Trilogy of Terror 1 and 2, Tales from the Crypt, Trick r Treat, Creepshow, and Cabinet of Curiosities (Netflix). Also, and I know it's a bit off topic, but are you familiar with Rod Serlings' The Night Gallery? It's pretty darn good.
What a fun ranking video! I agree with all of your choices. I enjoy the Torture Garden wraparound more than you do, but I agree with pretty much everything you said.
Liked your reviews man, they're a lot of nostalgic fun and you can take that from someone who used to go to the Sunday night Hammet horror double bills at my local theatre and then have to walk home after midnight through a park. Scary. My buddies and I were into classic horror and the way I always looked at the melding (if you will) between Universal and Hammer and their offshoots. At the time, Universal was the king and later on Hammer, being in awe of Universal, came along and decided to update the horror genre. Then came the offshoots. The way we looked at that at the time was Universal and her offshoots were PCR and Monogram and a couple of wannabes who took a stab now and then. Hammer and her offshoots were Amicus and the various wannabes of that period. They were all basically enjoyable to various degrees. The Frankensteins and Draculas and Mummies were reinvented and a spattering of others out there who copied the genre including anthologies. Also there were films like The Body Snatcher vs (later on) Flesh and the Fiends that sort of mimicked each other. At any rate, it's all good fun to see the similarities and where the films went.
I finally saw ,Torture Garden' and I liked it well, but ,Dr.Terror' and ,Asylum' are the best 👍 R.I.P. Donald Sutherland, great actor ❤ What about Trygon? Tigon of course, sorry I was thinking of the ,trygon factor' 😀
There is also one from '77 The Uncanny. Done by the co-founder of Amicus. Has Cushing, Ray Milland and Donald Pleasence. It isn't to bad if I remember correctly.
Swap Asylum and From Beyond the Grave and you get my list so very similar - tbh I love them all and could watch any happily on a given dark and stormy evening!
I love horror anthology films, and I'm not too familiar with these. I'm definitely gonna have to check them out. I'd love to see a video of you ranking other horror anthologies.
Hi there! I am a big fan of the Amicus Portmanteau movies, and like you, I own them all. To quibble over your rankings is unnecessary as in spirit, they are about where I would place them. (upper four and bottom three) Thank you for the video. I love your channel!!!!
The Amicus films were more or less all made on the same film lot as Hammer - Bray Studios. The producer Milton Subotsky had an office, or shed as he described it, at Bray Studios.
I think I guessed your entire rankings. Only because they’re pretty much the same as mine. I was hoping for a top ten segment list too. That’d be hard.
In FBTG I think all 4 objects were cursed and it's more consistent than you think. In the second segment, yes he steals the medal after already meeting Pleasance, but the actual black magic stuff happens after he steals the medal. The cursed medal "marked" him. In the 3rd segment I think the elemental was inside the snuff box and the when he first used the box the elemental jumped out and onto his shoulder.
x I have not been able to watch any movies recently, I am going to binge on them in a couple of days too! o I am still going to do the end of the month ones regardless of how far I can get and the ones I can't finish will have to go to the first of the month next month. x Dr. Terrors House of Horrors is easily my favorite wraparound for the ones I have seen! o Peter Cushing's character is high on my list of Halloween costumes to potentially wear for Halloween. x I have decided to be a druid for Halloween and have the robe picked out already! o My Halloween costumes are always stellar because I put so much thought and energy into them! o I might base some of my costume after the crypt-keeper, I will have to see if it will work after watching the Amicus movie. o You'd be surprised at how interesting the history of druids is! x After watching videos on this channel, I think you could put together a stellar horror film!
I don't think I've ever seen any of these, or if I have it was a long time ago. They used to show horror movies on tv a lot, like Monster Movie Matinee in the afternoons, so maybe I have seen a few. But I'd like to catch up on them.
Does the Daniel Massey segment in the Scream Factory edition of Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror end on a freeze-frame? My ranking: 1. Doctor Terror's House of Horrors 2. Asylum 3. The House That Dripped Blood 4. Tales from the Crypt 5. From Beyond the Grave 6. The Vault of Horror 7. Torture Garden
Hi ! Enjoyed your video as usual. I dunno if I can decide between Tales and House as my favorite Amicus, love em both. Maybe I'll go with Tales, then House with Asylum next. You should review Hammer House of Horror the 1980 TV seriesn its free on UA-cam. It has a very good Peter Cushing episode and an absolute classic Denholm Elliot one which invents the Groundhog repeating day trope long before anyone else and also invents the wake up but you still really dreaming trope a year before American Werewolf in London.
I really should get to watching both The House That Dripped Blood and Dr. Terror's House of Horrors. I saw Vault on TV one night as a kid, thought it was all right.
Gotta swap the first two. Maybe because I saw Tales From the Crypt when it came out, and all we kids could talk about was the razor blades. But it is an excellent list.

He was in "Horror Express" at the urging of his friend Christoper Lee as a way to distract from that loss. Another overlooked classic.0
I believe, the picture of his wife in his installment of that movie, is a picture of his wife

Thanks for this, really enjoyed it, especially the separate Peter Cushing ratings.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Asylum is my favourite. The wraparound is very engaging and I find the individual stories fun to watch. That said, I like all of these anthologies. 👻
I really enjoyed these when I was younger. Haven't seen them in years. Thanks for the memories. Great video as always 😊🐾💜👋👍
I love Vault of Horror!! Incidently Glynis Johns died earlier this year aged 100.
