Sweet video, great job on the close ups. Mine arrived Friday and I too got the melted soldier, which is a bummer but the rest seemed pretty good. I'm also a little worried about the game board. I seem to recall a neoprene board as a sg, but maybe that was a different campaign?
Yeah no Neoprene board that I recall. Several other Kickstarters do that so probably just a mix up :) Sorry to hear about your board though :( It gets used every single time you play the game so I'm really concerned about it's longevity when it looks like this right out of the box.

Love the video of the rotating figures. What do you use to rotate like that?
Thanks! :) I use a store display stand actually, often used for jewelry and cakes. It plugs in so it can rotate continually. I then have a flat reflective display board. That + poster paper in the back and two bright lights works really well for pictures and video alike :)

Excellent review of the components, this is for me the new benchmark of how to do it. Love your OCD-fueled attention to detail. Please do similar reviews for future games you get your hands on. I skipped Tainted Grail b/c I’m not convinced of the consistent quality of AR’s components. Pledged for Mythic Battles 1.5 and Claustrophobia 1643 instead, as well as Hellboy.

I ended up skipping Tainted Grail for the same reason. If it does show improvement I'll just grab the retail version and then just go from there, but two boxes with tons of issues is just too much for me. There are plenty of other great games I can spend my time on.

Waiting for the Core box in the latest Nemesis KS and am glad to say the game board issue seems to have been addressed. Just hoping the mini quality will be better (TG was better quality, at least..)

They've been improving minis with each release which is nice, but still are having some issues with capturing detail sadly every now and again. Happy to hear about the game board though!

Love your attention to detail. Also, sounds like this is an issue with the later prints. I got the sun drop edition and didn’t notice anything. An AR person mentioned that the sun drops were ran first and that later models had some issues with the molds.
Yeah exactly, that and anyone with a sundrop person has another person actually look at the mini, so it's sort of a secondary QC check built into the process.

Oh I'm glad I wasn't the only one that couldn't get it to stay together! Was worried I was putting it together wrong. Falls flat really easily.
@@TheKingofAverage i'm not sure why ppl find the mini's from them so great. They are just standard mini's that most companies make. CMON has better mini's in my opinion
I'm going to be honest, If I had unboxed that I would have been deeply disappointed in all the minis. All the detail is faint in my opinion. I'm hesitant about upgrading my pledge manager for Tainted Grail now.

You are very welcome JB! Glad I could help? I tried my hardest to be positive but I honestly see no upgrade from The Edge box I unboxed last time. With that being 2 games from them and with no change on qulaity I'm holding off as a consumer until I see actual improvement or they start selling these with standees at a cheaper price point.
The first chapter of the comics book should start: "On the ship was so hot, all the the people and aliens, and metal robotics arm ( specially from the left side) start melting down" :)

I do my best :) That's really too bad about the game board, it's the most used item in any game as every person playing uses it and it's used every game :( Thinking of perhaps adding some mod podge to the edges.
That mini is Stavros, from Vanguard of War by Archon Studio. One of my favorite sculpts from that set!

I just backed Némesis lockdown all in on ks, based on This, it really doesn't look like the minis quality Is worth. Should I:
A. Back down completely
B. Ship everything on wave 2 hoping they fix sundrop And manufacturing details
C. Throw a dice And hope my product comes with better quality on wave 1?

I love the miniatures comparison at the end. Its great to be able to compare them with some minis that people might already have, so we can put everything we just saw into context. Also I would love more of that, especially with the bigger miniatures. Say, one of the dragons or oni from rising sun next to that queen? Furthermore, I dont know if you have any, but it would be great to see some reaper bones or some cheap models up next to these models, I think that would be very interesting to see the difference between models advertised as "cmon quality" next to minis advertised as cheap models for d&d.
Oh I really like the idea of having cheap minis as well in the mix! I'll have to invest more time into those comparisons at the end :)
thanks to share this one....I also pledged the game but the Italian version...I believe that finding these unexpected surprises is due to the lack of regular inspections from AR in the Chinese production factory....hope to get a better product..thanks for this video!!!
Yeah that's exactly what I think as well. Every other KS I've backed the creators always go to China and keep a close eye on it. That being said, this isn't AR's first game with these issue and they were fine with it until it finally caught up to them.
I hope your version lucks out! :) Does it ship with wave 2 later this year?
The King of Average it is also two waves but it is going to be shipped 3 month after the English version...

The fact that my next unboxing video will most likely be HATE does no favors for Nemesis. From their production plastic pictures CMON has really stepped up their game since Rising Sun and it's just not even going to be a competition.
This cements it for me as well. That's two games now where there's about a dozen or more issues in the box from AR. Fool me once and all that jazz. Thankfully their games are not exclusive to Kickstarter so I can just wait for retail to verify any improvement instead of pre-ordering it on KS.
I really hope the second wave/language editions haven’t yet been produced and AR step up their QC as so many of the issues reported and commented on seem to come from their lack of QC. I’m very glad you took the time to take a measured and critical approach to the components, which most others have just instantly gushed over as being “fantastic” and “amazing”. Nemesis was the first board game I’ve kickstarted and am a little disappointed about the way the game component quality has turned out compared to what was promised. I won’t be backing anymore AR games until they prove themselves just as good at QC and component manufacture as they are outstanding games design.
You could tell I really did try to stay positive (as I'm naturally a positive person) but it was really hard when seeing some of the stuff in here. As you said, it's not so much a quality issue as a control issue, like a chef that sends out any meal regardless of how it was made.
I do believe there's still time for Wave 2 which is good, and AR, after all this fuss did hire their first QC guy to actually go down to China like all the other companies do to ensure quality control is met, but I'll still wait and see. None of their stuff is super exclusive to KS so if it means I wait a bit longer for it to hit retail so be it.
And I really do hope this hasn't deterred you from KS too much! It's honestly the first time I've ever been disappointed from a KS delivery. Almost always KS means you get the premium edition that's even better than retail, not this gamble of a box.
@@TheKingofAverage The board, the minis, the insert, which also has been getting increasing amounts of comments indicating production inconsistencies there too as well as the surprisingly thinner card stock is quite a mouthful when a lot of people have been gushing and saying these are the best components ever. Asides from Nemesis and Devil Pig Games halting production (I had backed Heroes of Stalingrad) my experiences with KS have been mostly positive with The Awful Orphanage and Unbroken being the two outstanding campaigns and creators that have truly gone above and beyond in all aspects. The Awful Orphanage I will say is looking to surpass my expectations. So I haven't been deterred. But I have been tempered in my willingness to jump in. Also, as this year progresses I will also have built up the breadth and size of the games collection I set out to compile as I started out in 2017 and as such won't be as much on the look out for new games. Anything new will definitely have to be amazing and filling a hole in what I have! But it's always super fun to see what you've next gone in store to talk about. Keep up the great work!
It sounds to me like you are the ideal consumer then in my eyes! You know what you are looking for, what you want, and what you plan to expect, meaning more often than not you don't back something that you will regret, leading to a happy backer :)
@@TheKingofAverage As my experience with board games grows I have definitely got a better idea of what to expect and what I want. To me it looks like your ideal quality baseline point of reference is Conan to which other KS games measure against. Do you think that will hold true moving forward or was Conan a bit like what I'm anticipating The Awful Orphanage to be for me in that the high quality may have been a relatively rare flook and turn out to be above the majority of KS games?
Sadly nothing is ever perfect and there are pros and cons to everything (I even have some gripes in my KDM unboxing lol) - so for Conan, the gameplay is fantastic, the minis industry standard, the rulebook is lacking and the game board is exceptional.
Really, I try to just make sure that most everything is average or above what the competition is offering, keeping in mind industry evolution (such as the recent adoption of pvc/abs plastic mixes) and that no single issue is really, really bad. For instance, the game board here is TERRIBLE. It's beyond my limit of being okay with, whereas the poorly organized rulebook of Rise of Moloch isn't *that* bad and can therefore be accepted as a ctritique within a recommendation.
For me at least, there honestly isn't really a "go-to" example for any one thing and instead it's all aggregate data forming my thoughts on each game.
I know a lot of these issues don’t affect gameplay, but I stop back these OP games two years ago. I found I never got into the extra ks content and it’s far cheaper to buy the base game at retail. Let’s be honest 8 out of 10 games hit the table twice before they’re shelved to never be seen again lol.
That's actually very true :) For me personally I'll be waiting for retail anyway for AR so I can verify improved quality before purchasing so i'm not disappointed.

The dice are scratched because they paint the outside of the dice to get the paint in the indented part of the dice and then rub off the extra paint on the outside of the dice which scratches the plastic.
Well that's just silly. I figured they were all put into a bin together and for whatever reason that caused all the scuff marks.
What about the size of the minis?
They are 32mm true scale.

I wanted to comment that many thi g on getting my copy of Nemesis. I was happy with many things and disappointed with a few. My board looked the same as yours does. As well I had mini problems. To be fair they are replacing 3 of my minis I asked for. My board is the only thing i had a problem that's not replaced. The biggest part for me it that its doesnt sit flat on the table. The miniss I asked for a replace on was the scout, soldier and a alien for missing a face.
Oh I guess I should lay it out and see if it looks flat. Did you ask for the board to be replaced and they declined? Trying to figure out what to do with this board. It's used every game and I just don't see this lasting without something changed either by them or myself. (Modpodge perhaps?)
@@TheKingofAverage I didnt ask for a new board though it might be good idea. I feel honestly what happend to the board was it was was exposed to the weather some. It feels like mildew hit it or something. Modpodge might work. I also thought of using scotch tape on all sides after cutting it Haha it might look sloppy though.

You got the melted soldier problem, the cast for the soldier got dammaged and bunch of copies went out with the dammaged soldiers. contact them and they will send you a replacement.

This games components aren’t as bad as Edge but it is what it is unfortunately. I’ve heard they were strictly minis based and moved into making board games. I’m actually curious how some of the sundrop minis turned out for the backers who added that to their pledge. I would hope more attention was put into those minis even though it should be good mini across the board.
Yeah actually AR started as (and still does) commission miniature painting. Their painters are REALLY good!
As for the Sundrop they are *generally* better simply because someone had to actually see the mini a bit, however some still have issues. I just watched another unboxing where the captain has no bear and instead it's all smooth (bulbous) - and that was sundropped. So less issues, but it seems you just can't escape the control issues they have currently.
30,000 boardgames with 100 minis in each boardgame equals to 3,000,000 minis.
There's bound to be thousands of mins that are subpar for shipping, yet in this box of yours there was several that should not have been shipped at all.
How many % of minis made for boardgames are not good enough, 10%? 20%? If 20%, that's 60,000 wasted minis. It can't be more than 10%, I'd actually guess 5%.
And then there's always minis that look like melted crap in most boardgames. Good that there's an option to return.
Yeah it's all about quality control really. I've gotten plenty of board games and never have I seen this amount of variance in quality. Normally they are all either "ho-hum" or good or great but some of these (like the queen) go from bad to good on the same mini. I really hope AR starts to tighten control on this. They don't want to be the "chef" that sends out the food regardless of the quality seen. Keep it in the kitchen :D
My gameboard seemed fine so far, but I will check it now ;) I am glad with the alien minis, they are pretty good quality overall, I have one alien with a bended base. The characters aren‘t good quality though. I am fine with all the rest, box is ok, cards are mediocre. I love the gameplay so i can live with all of this, just painted the figures roughly: base, washed twice and highlights.
What i really am concerned with is, that they had such a huge success on the Kickstarter campaign, why did they do all this extra stuff and not concentrated on putting the money to high quality components? I dropped out of AR future campaigns because of this, so there will be no tainted grail for me.
I'm in the same boat and feel the same way. It's odd to me to see corners cut on components yet receiving a free, hardcover full color art book and such. I would have much rather not received that and had more money spent ensuring amazing components. Board games are a physical hobby after all.
I'm due to receive the 2nd wave of Lords of Hellas soon. I'm a bit concerned about the quality of the heroes now, after watching your videos. They were casted about the same time as these.

I actually like painting boardgame minis with bad detail. It's less fiddly things to paint and more time to use blending and highlights.
You can have a mini without as much detail and have it still be good - I'm totally with you on the less detail quantity wise! Quality details can still be had :D I think minis like those in Conan are a perfect example of this.
I dropped my TG pledge to $1 based on concerns of QC that you have validated from this unboxing vid and the previous vid that you took some heat on.
I am unfortunately a 1 wave backer for both LOH and Nemesis and my enthusiasm for what I will find with any of these games once received has diminished greatly...

@@TheKingofAverage well that was part of my reasoning with 1 waving LOH and when they introduced sundropping. Figured if I did wave 1, all the kinks would be ironed out when the final copies are shipped and sun drop would be perfected.
I 1 waved Nemesis sans sundropping, but that was a split second decision before the rolling delays occurred with LOH.
Hoping too my games are relatively error free...

Nah that stuff isn't exclusive to Kickstarter. It's a better price yes, but they plan on taking stuff like The Aftermath and the other alien boxes to retail as well :) Perhaps by then they will have improved the quality some as well!

As a fellow punch out snob, if you do it from the back then anything that rips will be on the bottom or underside of the cardboard component. Less chance of damaging the top or outermost surface that way.
True, but I find it causes it to happen more often, as it's the back that is actually connected at the perforation. Ideally it just doesn't happen at all :D
Did you ever hear from Awaken Realms about there poor quality in this game and all there past games? I like the ideas for there game but quality seems highly questionable! Minis and components do not seems good.
Yes I did! I've been promised that they've put a lot of stock in what happened with this and will be really pushing to improve it. Time will tell of course but I'm hopeful as well. I'll be sure to let you guys know once I see the improvements in person :)

Ironically all the people who reacted negatively to my unboxing of The Edge haven't shown up yet :) I guess the "It's just one old game from their portfolio" doesn't cut it anymore.
Honestly though, I wish I would have been wrong (seeing as I went all-in on Nemesis). I tried throughout the video to stay positive and not have my mood get bad during the video, but to be frank I'm really, really disappointed with this. The theme, art, and game mechanics all seem really great but it's just such a shame that I'm afraid to take out the game board in fear it'll start ripping off the art.

This is why I no longer do Kickstarters, you end up getting the first run/alpha-prototype components The retail quality is almost always better. . issues are more likely to be resolved once mass production starts. Unless you are all about pushing your Kickstarter content on eBay...which seems to be what Kickstarter is really for, at least where it concerns backers. Also..."Maybe I will ask for a replacement on that one too." WTF with the miniatures critique? They're BOARD GAME miniatures and they look excellent in that context. You act like you're expecting Corvus Belli or GW quality and got Sedition Wars garbage instead. I hope I never sell you anything, you're one of those customers that businesses would rather not even take your money, because they end up married to your ass forever.

Seriously though, I'm just a dude on the internet that likes minis. You'll find a lot of passion on my channel around that. As for what I expect, I expect when I spend $100 that it gets me the same quality stuff that competitors are offering for the same price. Board games are inherently physical things after all. They aren't here selling a print and play and I'm not spending money expecting that either :)
I'm so disappointed about the quality of all the components especially with the miniatures, they looks like printed with a very low cost 3D printer. I'm seriously thinking to a refund for the first time... This is not even acceptable standard for market, surely my first and last buy from awaken realms!

So in the US they leave boxes that big on the porch, for everyone to steal? Isn't that dumb? Where I live (Greece), if they don't find you to receive the package personally, they leave a note which notifies you that a package has arrived and then you can go pick it up from the store.
Great video, btw. I love your attention to detail. The art is stunning while the minis do look like they could use a little bit of work. Still, the majority of players won't notice these small imperfections.
It may depends on the delivery company too. In Canada, some will store the package and others will leave it on the front porch for thieves and bad weather damage.
I once received a package while I was home and the guy never even tried to knock or ring the bell. He just left the package there. My dog never noticed the guy. According to the bill left on the package, it stayed there 2 hours before my dog asked to pee and I saw it.
we have both in the us. If something is very big, or they know its expensive, they will hold it and leave the note. But you can opt for them to leave the package no matter what.
As Lord and Francois said, it depends on how it was sent. With that being said, I've never had a KS not opt for the "leave on front porch" route. Usually they place it on the ground, ring the doorbell and then walk off in one single smooth action :D
So yeah, a box that literally says "this is what is inside the box" it very unusual here.

In the US it strongly depends on many factors. Bad neighborhood, state, city, deliver company, employee (some are assholes and bitches as they just throw or drop shit), some don’t knock or ring door bells, and the list goes on. Depends on your porch too. Some don’t have porches or steps, it’s just a slab on concrete leading to the door all out in the open. Leaving notes in most cases for the delivery person almost never works. Americans order so much crap from all over the world our delivery services are a hot mess at times. Pick up is also dependent as some post offices are jerks and the lines can be super long depending on how busy the local area is with business and what time you go to pick things up. Sometimes your stuff is sent to a main hub which is worse. It’s everywhere lol:) That’s why people in America are inventing fake packages that fire off blank shotgun rounds to scare anyone who try’s to steal lol. You should watch some videos, some people have gotten so terrified that they bolted off too fast and they slip and literally break an ankle or arm from landing wrong. Most places don’t like to ship to P.O. Boxes either so if the post office is far then oh well. Sometimes the delivery person doesn’t even leave any note and in California, there’s a time limit to how long they’ll hold your package until they ship it back to wherever it came from which ain’t you. I’ve had one package do an indie 500 between Michigan and California because the label was wrong so the package kept circle between two post office hubs that were several states apart. When I finally got the package it had to many damn labels on it, but hey I received it and everything inside was fine.

Yeah it really sucks :( Had high hopes for this game.
