Of course it did. But what is wrong with getting a bit stuck? What is wrong with not getting through on the first attempt? I don't get why people are so serious about this. People treat it like failure. Getting so badly bogged that we would need help from others to get out is failure. Having fun isn't failure!

I have watched a later video in this trip where you talked about the reasons you don't want to tow a camper trailer, but I wonder if in situations like this, it might be advantageous to have the weight of your accommodation over a third axle.
Would having that additional flotation have made tracks like that easy enough that you would have got to the camp you wanted?

Sorry to disrupt your theories Andrew but the out side of a bend in the river has less soft sand than the inside. Sand bars are always on the inside of a bend because the water slows down in velocity dropping it's load. Think of it like the inside tyre when turning.

Only thing what might even make ground more soft and deeper on the outside curve of rivers falling dry half of the time is the fact that there (outcurve) it flows the most amount of time, and it does deepen because of that.

This makes for a great day out and all you need is basically to be helped into the car where you can remain for the day. It is better than a multi day trip where facilities etc become a headache 👍🏿

    Beautifully shot.
The river bed was an excellent example of the weight problems with this vehicle - especially compared with a trailer.
With a trailer you can always de-hitch and get the tow vehicle out and then recover the trailer. However, with this set-up once stuck, you are seriously stuck.
It is just too heavy, perhaps it should be called the 'Hippo'??

Some people drive to get stuck, when on your own far from civilisation you avoid it but whatever you drive offroad you are eventually going to get bogged and need to get out. Thank you for demonstrating just one such occurance and why sand tracks are not there just to look good. In my humble experience, the most important thing when driving off road is to make good decisions as you need to be aware of the dangers, know your situation and consider the ability of your vehicle and your decision not to cross the river bed was just such an example of your off road driving skills. great video as always thank you.

  • @John-zo6do
    @John-zo6do 4 роки тому +10

Andrew.. the new vehicle is so heavy. 600-700kg heavier than the troppy when that was loaded up which definitely doesn't help in the sand.
You're tyres don't look like they're at 10-12psi which again would help.
I'm looking forward to seeing your opinion on the situation in a later video.

I congratulate you both anyway on your courage, noting that in difficult terrain (as in the excessively soft sanded parts), it can take wisdom to know when not to push one's self, a reality not easily understood by all who soon find themselves in trouble. I think your style of camping/travelling/adventuring surpasses everything else, beats 5 star resorts etc by a long shot. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are just magical!

    Overland Touring is all about.
We also do our touring based very much along the same line's & hopefully with this approach coming from you more people will adopt it as well.
When browsing UA-cam for Overland or Touring video's one of the most popular line's of thought & driving style is to "SEND IT" ,

Who hasn't got bogged in river sand ? ... can be much softer than Qld beach sand. I would suggest that a river flows fastest in the middle on a straight section and slower on the edges due to friction - based on my experience as a kayaker. Really enjoying your non-tourist version of WA.

What I love about these videos is the fact that it isn't about showy 4wdriving and splashing through puddles. It is about the adventure. That is why we do it ourselves. We are on night 8 of what was supposed to be a 14 night trip and we are sadly aborting. Our camper trailer has done nothing but cause trouble on this trip but happily the 4x4 is now almost ready for solo adventures. It is a bit mind boggling but it took us almost 4 HOURS to pack up this morning, argh! All that time wasted. The camper is going to be up for sale very soon I think. So yes I do agree about NOT TOWING, I have had quite enough of it now.

Don’t you just love Australian trees. Stark white, silver grey and creme and blue green against a cobolt blue sky. It is interesting Andrew and Gwen learning the subtle differences camping in different countries. I would love to learn to travel and camp in Africa with you. So many things are just ever so slightly different. I have been watching the way you first approach some situations with your very extensive experience and thinking well, I wouldn’t do it that way but you usually get it right on the second try. Not the tenth! Interesting your thoughts on towing. I used a roof top for many years and then changed to a hard floor camper. Currently have a Conqueror UEV490 and will be changing out to a bigger hybrid to live in for the first 3 years of retirement. Your points on towing are correct of course, but moving the weight into the car also limits where you can go. As you say, “Everything is a compromise”. One piece of advice I would offer you though if you will accept it. Never ever ever camp in a creek bed. Australia is, as you say, very big and it may have rained 1000 kilometres away a week ago. You and your camp may well get washed away under a starry sky. Happened many times in the past.

All good content. Getting a little stuck is fun. Getting badly stuck isn't fun. As for camper trailers, I understand your points Andrew. Your points actually made me think that having a trailer makes the most sense when traveling in a group. Put the vehicle with the trailer in the middle somewhere so if it gets stuck there are vehicles on either end that can help. Having a vehicle behind that trailer can also provide communication on what the trailer is doing.

Hi Andrew / Gwen. Loving the show as always but!!!!! I don't care if it's the hottest driest summer ever recorded. Camping in a river bed; where a mid summer thunderstorm 200 hundred kilometres inland can bring a torrent of water through your camp in the wee hours of the morning is a very bad a potentially deadly idea. I know because I've seen it happen. Camped at Minilya bridge high on the riverbank it didn't matter that the sound of the rushing water woke us from our swages and we stood staring at the torrents of water, logs and brush in the moon light as a 3 foot high wave of water and debris went bowling down the river course. The storm was so far away we didn't hear any thunder and saw no lighting but from that night to this I never camp in river beds. I would like to respectfully suggest that you and any of your fans never do again either. Travel safe

He is a liability, he is exactly the kind of bloke who we end up having to rescue every year in WA. He has no idea of just how dangerous it is to solo travel in remote Western Aust, has zero concept of how difficult it is to find someone, when we have no idea of their iteniary or route of travel. He will come undone and the worst of it is people watch his videos and think its easy to follow his example. Not cool and very poorly executed.

Its heavy, its a grey nomad tourer.. Bitumen lap, a bit of gravel, and light sand..basically its a cruiser with a caravan on the back.. most people tow the van/camper so once at a location they shed the weight and can prop let explore.
Having said that, its got everything. If it’s your thing it would be a great set up.. would make it super easy and comfortable.

    • @ericjade9500
      @ericjade9500 4 роки тому +1

Compare it to a 4wd and a van because basically it falls into this category because of its useless off road ability due to the weight and the platform.
Costs more than a 200 series and semi offroad 19ft van with all the fruit.
The dream tourer is good for 1.5 people.
200 series a family or very comfortable couple traveling.
unhook the van and away you go for the day.

Great video mate, enjoy seeing other parts this great country of ours.
I do like your comparison of towing a trailer and not towing - like everything, each has its advantage and disadvantage.
Me personally, I’d probably tow because things like when we you get bogged in sand, you can unhitch the trailer and work around it, or having to level the car every time you want to sleep in the canopy would do my head in, that extra weight of these huge canopies I believe can limit your slow incline Rick crawling abilities but then it’s mainly a tourer so horses for courses.....
I guess that’s the wonderful thing, we’re all different and everyone has their ideal setup.....that’s what makes this industry / hobby / sport so darn interesting and exciting 👍👍👍

Getting bogged is the directly related to weight per tyre for a given vehicle. A light trailer with the same living accomodation would solve this by spreading the weight over 6 wheels. It's wasn't lack of traction that stopped you, it was digging into the sand that stopped you. Your nature photography is absolutely superb Andrew. Just magnificent.

Proper wide tires (also larger?) and lower pressures (I would go down to maybe 10psi to overcome that if needed) would have also helped. Look at a side image of the truck, it's immediately obvious that it has tires too small for such a behemoth that pretends to tackle any kind of offroading beyond a simple dirt track.

I remember watching that episode when the guy asked "how to make a fire". When I told my wife her reaction was the same as Gwen. "At least he asked". If most men stick the pride in their pocket and ask things will go much smoother and easier but most men's reaction is "hold my beer and watch this!!"🤦‍♂️

The show has changed since you wife has started coming along, not better and not worse it has just changed. Still a very enjoyable piece of escapism for wet and dreary Ireland. Keep up the great work!

Great video, the risk assessments were sound. When you’re travelling as a solo vehicle, especially with a loved one you travel safely by erring on the side of caution. Less stress and a more enjoyable trip. We all know how ‘one last hill’ tends to end

Gwynn asking "why do we do this again?" and Andrew responding with "cause we wanna get over there" was just a perfect summation of the yearning we all have. I'm never quite sure why I want to go "there", and often I get myself in trouble attempting to go "there", but I know something is driving me to go "there". If I don't go I'll always wonder. Love the episode and the new truck.

Have to grin with Gwen! Get that real feeling that you care and not wanting to take to much chances with her in mind, though she is doing a lot of exercise filming. The map is a absolute winner for us to know where and there. Thank,s.

I love it! Western Australia is gorgeous. Definitely on my travel list. And no worries about the sand bogging, the sand on Southeastern US beaches is very thick. Had to help two guys, this past weekend, with recovery. Even one with a broken push button 4 Lo and Hi on his GMC. That why I prefer my mechanical shift 4WD.

Andrew isn’t this part 3?? You have two videos named as part 4 this and the windmills and took me a while to find the whole sequence... would be great if you included the links for the other videos in the description.
On other matters! Could you recommend an online basic mechanic course. I have a Defender 110 2.4 Puma but my mechanics knowledge is limited however I consider myself skilled on handwork of all types so I bet I could learn fast!
Love your channel and builds! Keep the good work

    One suggestion of a modification
Have some way of attaching your rear mud flaps to the underside of your under tray lockers to keep them out of your way when reversing through soft sand or digging yourself out.
I suggest two strips of stainless steel pop riveted either side of the rubber flap.
Then stick some strong neodymium magnets inside the lockers so that the flaps will stick to the when needed.
Or more basically a length of chain that can attach to a discrete hook somewhere.

Hi Andrew. I’m guessing you know this little trick. For levelling up in sandy camp. Rather than going to the trouble of packing the wheels with Maxtrax, try digging small holes for the high wheels to drop into. It actually could work to Gwynn’s advantage too making it a bit lower. Loving the trip.

G’day Andrew, don’t often comment but I need to thank you for passing on your knowledge. I watched your recent videos but I learnt most from your 2nd channel where you give guidance into the artistry of editing and storytelling. Love that stuff. I now have a hobby that pays for itself. My UA-cam channel has just past 12000 subscribers and in a significant way that’s thanks to you. Very much appreciated. Wayne Groomes. Land and Bay Fishing.

Loved the Unimog reference :) I pretty much have the Unimog version of your rig. Pop top camper on the back. It does weigh 9 tonnes though so it's very hard to recover if it does get bogged......

Think twice in thick sand and on the beach Andrew, its a heavy vehicle. Daai graaf en maxtrax gaan jou besig hou. Looks very comfortable and convenient, one has to compromise some things I suppose.
