I think you could divide the palette count in subcategories of minis (6 or less pans) and regular size (over 6 pans). Because it seems kinda “unfair” to put the minis next to fully sized eyeshadow palettes. But anyways Kelly, happy new year!! I think counting pans is a little intense. I like hearing palette numbers because it means more than hearing pan numbers. You could take pictures of the palettes and sort large from mini if you want to show the difference.
Happy New Year! You got me started on the inventory counts a number of years ago. My initial count back then was about 160 products. Now I have 30: 4 base products, 5 blush/bronzer, 3 stick/cream shadows, 4 eyeshadow palettes, 1 mascara, 2 brow, 3 eyeliners, and 8 lip products. I used to count pans because I usually depot everything, but now I count those singles as a palette. So I have 2 ND minis and 2 palettes of singles.
I’ve been keeping my inventory in Excel for almost 9 years now, and I create new tabs to reflect what I used with beginning and end dates, and project pan goals.
I did so many single eye colors in my twenties and thirties. It was actually a weird thing for me to transition to mostly palettes, and I think I did it for ease. I used to store my single colors by hue, intensity, finish, etc. and it got to be overwhelming for me, especially running my own business and growing my family. When I downsized initially, most of those singles went in the first wave. Phew! I so appreciate your poise and straightforward presentation. That periwinkle-lavender is lovely on you, too.
I feel like glittery shadows are good to have on hand even if you don't use them much. I realized how much our tastes change, one minute we're into glow blush, the net all we want it matte lol. I try to keep that in mind when decluttering things that aren't my current taste. I always enjoy seeing your numbers. My numbers were better than I thought & I finally got my lipsticks under control.
I wish I had taken an inventory before I started getting rid of stuff a few years ago. I had a whole hutch desk full as well as stacked full Alex 9 drawers, and a small 5 Sterilite drawers on the desk with 6 big brush cups. All of it stuffed full of makeup! I've gotten down to using just 8 of the Alex drawers that are not stuffed full, actually they all have room in them, and 3 brush cups (complexion, cheeks, eyes) with a medium acrylic organizer on my desk with my every day items in it. I'm so happy with the smaller collection and I'm actually using stuff up! I'm still getting rid of things. Controlling my buying has helped a ton! That's the number 1 step I think. Great reminders in these inventory videos!
As much as so many eyepalettes lure me, I am going to try a low buy year -- still searching for a foundation, and otherwise hope only to replace items I love/truly need. Thank you so much for all the work this month! Hope 2022 is a happy, healthy, enriching year for you!
Me too! I have all the Natasha Denona palates and I love them but I don’t feel like I get to use them because I have so many others! Then when it comes to declutter … I have a hard time! I’m gonna try and buy just one palate a month! We’ll see what happens! Or if I buy one then one has to leave!
Mid year I did my first makeup inventory and thought I would have around 50-60 products. That was shocking since I had 133! I have been tracking since and focusing on project panning and I now have 110 items. I am far more conscious about my makeup and tried a no buy but ended up purchasing at Black Friday and after Christmas sales. I’m going to try to do a no buy for 2022 but I have a really hard time passing up on great sales!
I used to do the same until I realized sales come multiple times a year & at the very least annually. Most products we can’t use up in a year. So if you miss one sale, you’ll definitely have more than enough products to last you until the next one.
Your inventory videos inspired me to put mine on a spreadsheet last year. I ended up using up/decluttering old/giving away rarely used 107 items. My single eyeshadows went from 72 to 48, and I have one that is almost used up. Thanks for the inspiration!
this might be odd, but, when i do my makeup inventory & think about my numbers in each category, i count mini/deluxe sample/travel size products as half a point (.5). for example, i currently have 1 full size primer, and 3 mini/deluxe sample/travel size primers. so to me, i have 2.5 primers. (1+.5+.5+.5=2.5). which is great for me, because to me i should never, ever exceed 3 primers in my collection. i like to have one pore diffusing/blurring primer, one hydrating primer, and then one ‘free’ one, because i like to have at least one holy grail product that i truly love, but i do like to find new things (i know for a lot of people that third could be a mattifying primer or a illuminating primer - neither are to my personal makeup tastes so that’s why mine is the way it is). as for eye palettes though…. i’m not sure, that’s a personal choice. i just count all of mine as 1 even if they’re smaller or larger, but i think a good part of the reason that i’m okay with doing that is because i flat out don’t like large palettes. the largest size palettes i have are the abh ones, the classic ones with the velvet-touch packaging and i still have the too faced chocolate bar palette in my collection. i’ve always been a smaller, more curated color story, type person so i just count each palette as one, whether it’s one of my natasha denona mini palettes or one of my abh palettes. i don’t have any single powder/pan eyeshadows, i only have cream pots and those types, so i count those separate. maybe you could just split your numbers based on how many pans, but also the size of the pans, to decide for yourself you have for example: 15 small palettes, 15 midsize/large palettes, etc? cause with counting pans i think you can run into the same problem because the sizes can vary so much.

I have two separate categories. I have one for mini palettes and one for large palettes. I have subcategories within my large eyeshadow palette section, too. I separate by color story (neutral & colorful). I don’t pull for my mini eyeshadow palettes, often. I like to have them separated.
Since you are interested in using your single shadows more I recommend starting a series I personally do on my own channel. Which is to create a seasonal palette from your single shadows and a quick demo of it. It's only 4 videos per year so it's not overwhelming and you'll get to showcase your single shadows a little more love. I've been really enjoying this for almost two years, that I decided to do it monthly in 2022. Maybe I'll go back to seasonal but for now I am enjoying rediscovering my single shadows.
Definitely agree that palettes should be split! I keep track of mine as both palette and pan numbers. Pan number or just small vs big sounds like the way to go for you!

I personally count each pan as one for everything (both eyeshadows and cheek products) but I do use up a full pan on a somewhat regular. Since I imagine you don't (since your collection is much larger), I think it makes more sense for you to divide your palettes by smaller palettes and larger palettes categories 😊

I’m definitely more of your average makeup user (2 concealers, 1 powder, 2 brow products, 2 bronzers, 2 blushes, 2 cream highlighters, 1 mascara, 2 cream eyeshadows, 2 mini eyeshadow palettes, 10 tinted balms, whew!) but I still love watching this type of video.

Hey Kelly, I love inventory videos but I find it really helpful to see (like overhead) the products as you’re going through the categories. It just makes the numbers make sense for me personally.
Maybe consider for your next inventory to mark minis as halves instead? So two minis would equal one full-size product. It might make it a little more fair for you! And a more accurate way to track your makeup.
When I did my inventory I split my palettes into two categories small (four pans or fewer) and large (more than 4 pans) and counted my singles separately. I realized I have some small palettes that are at least 5 years old. I'm putting them in my project pan, and as soon as I hit pan on one shade I'm tossing them. I am not going to buy anymore until these are gone.
I hand write my inventory too, it’s easier for me then a spreadsheet! maybe with the eyeshadows, you could separate it into quads/minis vs palettes. With mine I do quads and palettes in separate categories. I also have under totals the amount of pans. With your singles, maybe each “basket”, every time make a palette with the singles
I'd love to see single shadow content from you. I think singles are too underrated in the beauty community. Personally, I don't own any premade palettes. I own 77 singles and really don't need much more eyeshadow. I can basically create any color story I would find interesting/useful and I can always mix shades if I want a specific color that's not in my stash.
I watched your mid year inventory video and decided to do one myself. I forgot to keep the numbers though lol. Anyway you've reminded me to do so again, and I'll be counting my products tonight. Im kinda worried though, because I'm not a makeup content creator (though it is my dream to become one) and I can definitely see my collection being the size of yours if not even higher in some categories. I think it's because I consume so much beauty related content on UA-cam and find myself convinced to buy items that all of my favorite creators recommend. But you definitely inspire me to keep my collection curated and I started consciously making an effort to really decide if I NEED a product when one catches my eye. I've been able to successfully talk myself out of buying products because I think WWKD (What would Kelly do).

We don’t often see them because you don’t choose them in your shop my stash, which I totally understand, but I didn’t realize you had 18. I know you have Pixi. i count palettes in 2 categories based on how many pans in the palette. i do 9 or less pans in one and 10+ in one to divide it up. because i have so many mini palettes it helps so much!
I really like counting my palettes by pans and for my own purposes I like to take the number out of it does have pan in the product. Going by palettes is perfectly fine but seeing the exact number of shadows I own is so much more satisfying for me
Wow, I never thought of keeping a make-up inventory... Thinking off the top of my head, I have around 10 foundations, 20 blushes, 5 powders, 10 eyeshadow sticks , 15 eyeliners, 5 eyeshadow palettes - time to declutter. I only have one face..Don’t need all this make-up. Happy New Year....
I need to be more consistent with my inventory. I know my lip gloss collection alone is a ridiculous amount even after decluttering unopened ones I know I'll never used (most of those came in sets). I try not to keep makeup items for more than three years after I first open them and I have several eyeshadow palettes that will hit the three-year mark this year plus I have one palette on my chopping block. My ultimate goal is to have a more curated makeup collection. I'm doing a no-buy at least until Sephora's spring VIB sale. Even then, I see myself getting one eyeshadow palette I've had my eye on and skincare repurchases.

I have different spreadsheets for my makeup, skincare, bodycare and haircare products. I write down every product and when I opened it. About the palettes: I count each palette as one item (palette for me is everything with 2 or more shades) and also I keep track of the total eyeshadow pans I have. I think considering your love for makeup and the fact that you're a professional youtuber, you're doing amazingly!😉

I think both the total number of palettes plus the sum of all pans would be interesting numbers to track, then you'd also see how your average pan number per palette changes from inventory to inventory
I definitely recommend formatting a spreadsheet! After the initial formulations it makes the counting process go by much quicker and easier. It also makes it simpler to continue comparing each update since you aren’t limited by the size of the paper. I switched to excel a year or so back and I love it so much more!

I wish that I could say that a lot of the items were old or could be thrown away due to being expired but, unfortunately, that is not the case. I’d do an inventory of Minis and regular and then large palettes for eyeshadows. Minis - 6 or less Medium - max 12 to 15 shades Large - the huge 32 pan CP ones 😂
I don't wear much makeup but yes I do like to keep track of how much I have. I think that's one of the things about makeup it is as fun to use up as it is to buy new.
I’ve enjoyed minimizing my makeup because it allows me to keep and enjoy stuff that’s fun and not just things I feel the need to have to “fix” things about myself. Benefit to getting older!

I don't do inventory, but this year I decided to keep a basket of all the makeup/beauty items i use up to see how much makeup i use a year, to motivate me to use my makeup, and to refrain from buying unless i use something up
I only count packages, so I go by palettes - even for my magnetic singles. I just count the magnetic palettes they're in. I also view palettes more like clothes to be worn until I'm done with it rather than worrying about totally using it up like a primer or foundation.

Pans and palette numbers are my recommendation. I've just had an influx from Christmas so I have 11 palettes but only 85 pans because 4 are quads. Whereas someone with all larger maybe have 150-200 and I feel like that's a big difference

i count both minis and bigger palettes as each one palette because i view them as a unit rather than individual shades. i think it makes sense to count pans + palettes.
I have two palettes of singles, and one palette, so three palettes total, but if you counted pans it would be 62 pans. Counting pans makes the number seem a lot bigger than it looks, if you have a palette heavy collection, imo. You can’t really reduce the number of pans in a palette, it’s kind of pointless if you do - since they take up the same space.. But it’s a good system for singles. I would just keep track of both, and see which system works best for you. 👍🏻

Cracks me up when she talks about her collection not mirroring the average consumer! 😳 girl, I’m a musician and teacher and I have 240 eyeshadow palates! 😳 and I love them all! 😂✌🏼 I wonder what that number of pans would be if I counted them! I can say that I did use up an entire Christine Dominique shadow this year from her rustic glam palate! 🤷🏻♀️
I like to organize by palette size. So Small is 3-6 pans, Medium is 7-14 pans, Large is 15-24 pans, and XL is 25+ pans. And one can adjust it to what makes sense for them.

dang I remember when your limit for palettes was 25! but your channel has also grown SO MUCH since then, so I think it makes sense :) What if you kept 2 boundaries for them? Like for ex, you want to have a goal of either 30 palettes or 300 pans of eyeshadow. And if you have hit either of those goals, your goal is hit!

So for my makeup inventory I have my eyeshadow palettes in duos, quads and then palettes. I think adding a mini sub category would be great for you Kelly where you determine what’s a mini palette and what isn’t
The best way to use up brow gels that you’re feeling “meh” about is to use them in your roots to darken the wispy fuzz hairs along the hairline or cover up grays!
I'd love to do a makeup inventory, however I already know how much I have as it all fits in one bag... the only products I own multiples off are loose powders as I go through those quite quickly and setting powder which are two different shades/undertones as I'm still not sure as to what my undertone actually is and both look good so it's fine (my concealer and foundation also have different undertones lol)
If I were you I would keep palettes and individual pans separately. The moment I started counting individual pans I almost had a mini heart attack. Another option is to have two categories full size and mini palettes. I count palettes, individual shadows and hit pan percentage.
I have never actually counted all my products, but i think tomorrow i will do a declutter and inventory to start 2022. I did just declutter my collection last month, but i think i can purge a little more.
I count my eyeshadow palettes in 3 ways: palettes, pans, amount of product. 'Cause in some there's just a little bit of produkt and in some there is just sooo much. (For Example those essence six pans: essence dancing GREEN [2021], 6 x 0,75g = 4,5g) - the year is when you bought it
Some of my numbers are similar to yours, and I have the same reaction. Why so many eyeliners? Why do I have 4 mascaras open? As it is I'm barely managing to wear makeup once a week! 😅 Time to do my own inventory and go on a no-buy.

I do my counts this way. Half my "palettes" are 2 or 4 pans, which is misleading if I count them all the same

It is easier for me to keep a close eye on my eyeshadow inventory by counting palettes NOT pans.
I’m definitely more of your average makeup user (2 concealers, 1 powder, 2 brow products, 2 bronzers, 2 blushes, 2 cream highlighters, 1 mascara, 2 cream eyeshadows, 2 mini eyeshadow palettes, 10 tinted balms, whew!) but I still love watching this type of video.
I’ve loved watching your vlogmas videos this year! You’ve gone through a lot but it seems like you’ve come out on the other side stronger and more confident in yourself. Go girl!

Hey Kelly, I love inventory videos but I find it really helpful to see (like overhead) the products as you’re going through the categories. It just makes the numbers make sense for me personally.
Maybe consider for your next inventory to mark minis as halves instead? So two minis would equal one full-size product. It might make it a little more fair for you! And a more accurate way to track your makeup.
When I did my inventory I split my palettes into two categories small (four pans or fewer) and large (more than 4 pans) and counted my singles separately. I realized I have some small palettes that are at least 5 years old. I'm putting them in my project pan, and as soon as I hit pan on one shade I'm tossing them. I am not going to buy anymore until these are gone.
I hand write my inventory too, it’s easier for me then a spreadsheet! maybe with the eyeshadows, you could separate it into quads/minis vs palettes.
With mine I do quads and palettes in separate categories. I also have under totals the amount of pans.
With your singles, maybe each “basket”, every time make a palette with the singles
I'd love to see single shadow content from you. I think singles are too underrated in the beauty community.
Personally, I don't own any premade palettes. I own 77 singles and really don't need much more eyeshadow. I can basically create any color story I would find interesting/useful and I can always mix shades if I want a specific color that's not in my stash.

I watched your mid year inventory video and decided to do one myself. I forgot to keep the numbers though lol. Anyway you've reminded me to do so again, and I'll be counting my products tonight. Im kinda worried though, because I'm not a makeup content creator (though it is my dream to become one) and I can definitely see my collection being the size of yours if not even higher in some categories. I think it's because I consume so much beauty related content on UA-cam and find myself convinced to buy items that all of my favorite creators recommend. But you definitely inspire me to keep my collection curated and I started consciously making an effort to really decide if I NEED a product when one catches my eye. I've been able to successfully talk myself out of buying products because I think WWKD (What would Kelly do).

i count palettes in 2 categories based on how many pans in the palette. i do 9 or less pans in one and 10+ in one to divide it up. because i have so many mini palettes it helps so much!
I really like counting my palettes by pans and for my own purposes I like to take the number out of it does have pan in the product. Going by palettes is perfectly fine but seeing the exact number of shadows I own is so much more satisfying for me

Wow, I never thought of keeping a make-up inventory... Thinking off the top of my head, I have around 10 foundations, 20 blushes, 5 powders, 10 eyeshadow sticks , 15 eyeliners, 5 eyeshadow palettes - time to declutter. I only have one face..Don’t need all this make-up.

I need to be more consistent with my inventory. I know my lip gloss collection alone is a ridiculous amount even after decluttering unopened ones I know I'll never used (most of those came in sets). I try not to keep makeup items for more than three years after I first open them and I have several eyeshadow palettes that will hit the three-year mark this year plus I have one palette on my chopping block. My ultimate goal is to have a more curated makeup collection. I'm doing a no-buy at least until Sephora's spring VIB sale. Even then, I see myself getting one eyeshadow palette I've had my eye on and skincare repurchases.

I've been doing my inventory for at least 10 years on excel. I have different spreadsheets for my makeup, skincare, bodycare and haircare products. I write down every product and when I opened it. About the palettes: I count each palette as one item (palette for me is everything with 2 or more shades) and also I keep track of the total eyeshadow pans I have. I think considering your love for makeup and the fact that you're a professional youtuber, you're doing amazingly!😉

I think both the total number of palettes plus the sum of all pans would be interesting numbers to track, then you'd also see how your average pan number per palette changes from inventory to inventory
I definitely recommend formatting a spreadsheet! After the initial formulations it makes the counting process go by much quicker and easier. It also makes it simpler to continue comparing each update since you aren’t limited by the size of the paper. I switched to excel a year or so back and I love it so much more!
I never thought that I would have more makeup than a beauty UA-camr, but I DO!!!!! 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 I, obviously, need to do a makeup inventory of my own!!! I wish that I could say that a lot of the items were old or could be thrown away due to being expired but, unfortunately, that is not the case. I’d do an inventory of Minis and regular and then large palettes for eyeshadows.
Minis - 6 or less
Medium - max 12 to 15 shades
Large - the huge 32 pan CP ones 😂
I don't wear much makeup but yes I do like to keep track of how much I have. I think that's one of the things about makeup it is as fun to use up as it is to buy new.
I’ve enjoyed minimizing my makeup because it allows me to keep and enjoy stuff that’s fun and not just things I feel the need to have to “fix” things about myself. Benefit to getting older!

I don't do inventory, but this year I decided to keep a basket of all the makeup/beauty items i use up to see how much makeup i use a year, to motivate me to use my makeup, and to refrain from buying unless i use something up
I only count packages, so I go by palettes - even for my magnetic singles. I just count the magnetic palettes they're in. I also view palettes more like clothes to be worn until I'm done with it rather than worrying about totally using it up like a primer or foundation.
You inspired me to count my collection, it was eye opening! I'm definitely going to do a project pan and low buy for now! I need to use this stuff up.

Pans and palette numbers are my recommendation. I've just had an influx from Christmas so I have 11 palettes but only 85 pans because 4 are quads. Whereas someone with all larger maybe have 150-200 and I feel like that's a big difference

For my inventory, I count minis as half a product!
i count both minis and bigger palettes as each one palette because i view them as a unit rather than individual shades. i think it makes sense to count pans + palettes.
I have two palettes of singles, and one palette, so three palettes total, but if you counted pans it would be 62 pans. Counting pans makes the number seem a lot bigger than it looks, if you have a palette heavy collection, imo.
You can’t really reduce the number of pans in a palette, it’s kind of pointless if you do - since they take up the same space.. But it’s a good system for singles. I would just keep track of both, and see which system works best for you. 👍🏻

I like to organize by palette size. So Small is 3-6 pans, Medium is 7-14 pans, Large is 15-24 pans, and XL is 25+ pans. And one can adjust it to what makes sense for them.

dang I remember when your limit for palettes was 25! but your channel has also grown SO MUCH since then, so I think it makes sense :) What if you kept 2 boundaries for them? Like for ex, you want to have a goal of either 30 palettes or 300 pans of eyeshadow. And if you have hit either of those goals, your goal is hit!

So for my makeup inventory I have my eyeshadow palettes in duos, quads and then palettes. I think adding a mini sub category would be great for you Kelly where you determine what’s a mini palette and what isn’t

The best way to use up brow gels that you’re feeling “meh” about is to use them in your roots to darken the wispy fuzz hairs along the hairline or cover up grays!
Hmmm, I think a palette is a palette and counts as one. This inspires me to do my own inventory!
I'd love to do a makeup inventory, however I already know how much I have as it all fits in one bag... the only products I own multiples off are loose powders as I go through those quite quickly and setting powder which are two different shades/undertones as I'm still not sure as to what my undertone actually is and both look good so it's fine (my concealer and foundation also have different undertones lol)

If I were you I would keep palettes and individual pans separately. The moment I started counting individual pans I almost had a mini heart attack. Another option is to have two categories full size and mini palettes.
I count palettes, individual shadows and hit pan percentage.
I have never actually counted all my products, but i think tomorrow i will do a declutter and inventory to start 2022. I did just declutter my collection last month, but i think i can purge a little more.
Palettes are great. But I think single eyeshadows will come back in style sometime in the future. However, I really enjoy a good palette. 😃
I count my eyeshadow palettes in 3 ways: palettes, pans, amount of product. 'Cause in some there's just a little bit of produkt and in some there is just sooo much. (For Example those essence six pans: essence dancing GREEN [2021], 6 x 0,75g = 4,5g) - the year is when you bought it

Some of my numbers are similar to yours, and I have the same reaction. Why so many eyeliners? Why do I have 4 mascaras open? As it is I'm barely managing to wear makeup once a week! 😅 Time to do my own inventory and go on a no-buy.
