_Guns, Germs and Steel_ was also excellent, showing how geography helped picked winners and losers in the Age of Exploration. It answers the question, Why did Europe explore and dominate the world, and not China, or Africa, or Meso-America?
We had 25 years of Fox and Limbaugh, creating an alternate media where appealing to prejudice/wrongheaded beliefs created devout followers on the path to a fascist leader who was not to be questioned or doubted.
The universe is the only sacred truth , only we need to keep on plodding , learning and educating ourselves that a “pale blue dot ‘ is all that we have for now. We are the product of the stars, dusts and gases.
I believe that it is natural for intelligent beings to imagine gods. As a species becomes intelligence, it gains curiosity, looks at the heavens and the Earth, and at themselves, and wonders 'Who put that there'. They find no answer, so divine design is their only solution to this riddle.
It’s a cop put. It’s the easy solution. The harder thing is to pursue the answer’s of nature through studying and conducting science. It’s easy to just say “god did all of this”.
To build on this, without god we have infinite possibilities from which to go forward. Our societies and science can go anywhere, do anything. With the current loadout of gods our lives are apparently rote. They are planned and built for us. We must only do as commanded and be given a magical reward to be joined with something infinitely beyond our comprehension. I find it much more rewarding to seek the infinite and understand it, rather than to presume that all our efforts are for another.
See you are a rational thinker. You seek evidence for the truth’s of the laws of nature. It seems to me that 99% of humans do not think this way which is a very unfortunate thing
Your assuming god is real. Do you have evidence god is real? If not then what you feel god want’s from you is based on a mythological deity. In other words you believe in the supernatural. “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”
There are those who believe that such things as fossils are tests of faith we must overcome in order that we might enter paradise. What if seeing through the words of holy writ is the test? What if the Hindu's have a piece of the truth and the faithful are sent back to try life again while those like Carl Sagan ascend? There is as much or more support for this idle speculation as there is for more popular notions in the same vein.
Codhein: actually that's such a great point and observation! That would be a great test, follow the tradition, or follow compassion- reminds me of the Sabbath stuff with Jesus; what's more important, following authority or acting properly. Shame this point has been missed by a lot. I have crazy family that believe they are 'demon haunted' (ironic to say here) because they're saved 'prophets'- but won't look at or help the polio street guy. I believe in no God. However, I think that humanity are practically gods. God can create. So can we. We can genetically engineer, breed selectively, create the primordial soup, and change the entire face of the planet in no time at all. God can also destroy. With one push of a button, so can we. Being by far the most powerful and intelligent life form on Earth, we fill the void left by an absence of a god.
"Arguments from authority are worthless." and right now Carl is having this very argument with the one who created him and everything else--God. How utterly sad and tragic are these people. In thinking they were wise they became fools. Not only do they spit in the face of their Father--they teach and encourage others to do so. None of their fans will be with them when they are put to utter shame. How miserable their end will be. No applause, no worship, just everlasting regret
If you want people to follow God, prove his existence, as well as that it is indeed the Christain god as opposed to the thousands of other deities created by various cultures around the world.
I’ll have everlasting regret then. Oh wait. It’s all supernatural?? Ok then nothing of hell fire fear mongering in the bible book will happen to me. Im good. To top it off for ya, Your god never existed…

Dr Sagan left us way too soon.
He's irreplaceable.
I wish Mr. Sagan could have seen James Webb launched and the data it will bring.

There are answers in science for why everything around us exists…

Mostly Vangelis and classical music
