Oh Carl Sagan.. I miss you! The world still needs you!
Totally, this is such a humbling metaphor for how small we are in relation to the rest of the universe.
Yep. He was in awe of what humans (or yoo-mans, as he pronounced it) had achieved, but at the same time, he was realistic about our place in the cosmos.
Rest in peace, Carl. You were an amazing person.
Yes Seph, I miss him too. I to this very year, watch his Cosmos once a year so that I may enjoy the notes of universe spectrum.
The world does not need this dumbass liar.
Carl Sagan "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be."
Carl Sagan, "I can’t imagine anyone denying the existence of the laws of nature, but I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky."
More from the dumbass, "It’s perfectly possible that the universe is infinitely old and therefore uncaused. In fact, there are detailed cosmological models that hold such a view and that are consistent with everything we know. To my mind, it seems not fully satisfactory to say that there was a first cause. That seems to postpone dealing with the problem rather than solving it. If we say “God” made the universe, then surely the next question is, “Who made God?” If we say “God” was always here, why not say the universe was always here? If we say that the question “Where did God come from?” is too tough for us poor mortals to understand, then why not say that the question of, “Where did the universe come from?” is too tough for us mortals? In what way, exactly, does the God hypothesis advance our knowledge of cosmology? What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?"

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
....yet the buffoon thinks creation happened naturally, but the idiot says, "What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" as the crap-for-brains ignores the CLEAR science that creation had to happen by God supernaturally! Still the fool who ignores the laws farted out, "I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky." Notice his mocking God, "man in the sky" as if that makes him look smart as he completely ignores the evidence.
His question, "Who made God?" is as dumb as he is.
So in his way of foolish thinking, if a supernatural creator created the natural realm, then that supernatural creator who created the natural realm with its natural laws has then become also bound by those natural laws the supernatural creator created. So explain why a supernatural creator is also bound by the laws the supernatural creator created. Or, show how smart you are and just give your science for creation happening naturally and don't forget to give your science how the natural laws were created, too. If he wanted to act smart, it may be a good idea to actually show you are.
Sagan the dumbass will at some point face his Maker for his judgment of what he believed in this life. His extreme shame and regret was all his choice. He wanted to be a hypocritical dumbass. Then he'll be thrown into the lake of fire. It will be his 'The End' and be remembered no more. ALL his choice and for others who follow that fool.
This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "what is our address in space?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. It is a great exclusive product for discovering your mayan day sign and the clues it has to your future without the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my neighbour got excellent results with it.
I will never forget watching this on PBS back in 1980 and falling in love with science.... Mr. Sagan had a natural talent for making his topics come alive and made one watch with interest and wonder at the nature of the universe his show lit the flame in my soul to want to know and learn all about the world we live in and beyond. What I would give to have Carl Sagan back and enjoy how he made things that others found boring exciting and want to learn about its been over 40 years and that flame that he lit still burns within me to this very day.
He was not only a genius scientist but a true visionary. Gone too soon.
I get teary EVERYTIME I watch Carl Sagan. Not teary perhaps, just moved - the guy and his perspectives really move me. What a loss! Let's never forget these things he has said.
I love Carl Sagan. I saw this about the Cosmic Calendar when it first aired and it blew me away.
If someone ever asked who I most admire or have the most respect for it would be Carl.
He was one of a kind, had immense knowledge but he made you feel like you were on his level.
Rest in peace Carl, I'll remember you always.
Then you love a dumbass.

His voice was soothing and father like. A poetic scientist, I’ve read many of his books • He is responsible for my understanding of the universe • From an early age in my early teens I begged my father to buy me his incredible Cosmos book and so my journey of understanding began, he sparked in me the deep love and appreciation for the universe • I miss him every day.

How very apt 😊
Love this clip and how it puts everything into perspective. The world needs more like Carl Sagan, exemplar of the best we can be. I wish he were alive now and hope people will always listen to his wisdom. Those final words, so powerful and true.
Carl Sagan could never construct a boring statement :-) . Every statement he makes is profound... and when he finally puts it in perspective that we just own up only 1 second it is really humbling and yet gives us the right perspective to start the next cosmic year ... Carl Sagan you are truly a wonderful educator as you make people think & emote at the same time.
Actually, he is brilliant and extremely educated. You may not like his point and what he is saying, and that is fine, but in no way is Carl Sagan dumb or unintelligent.
He was Head of his time, I disagree with him when it comes his stance on religious truth but still I will not deny that he is very intelligent with good communication ability. 😊
Man, I love this SOOOOOOO MUCH. Everytime things seem overwhelming, this is where I go to put it all in perspective. Carl Sagan was simply an astounding person with an incredible legacy for all of humankind. He is sorely missed.
Funny how we've done SO much damage in our short time here...

This really puts a perspective on the utter vastness of 15 billion years. Sure, we can count the zeroes but we just cannot grasp the immensity of a billion anything! This idea gives that, vast ocean of time, a bit of scale for us to chew on.

Wow this was so beautiful and moving!
Cosmos is the greatest science series ever, but I always felt we get beaten over the head with the cosmic calendar concept. We get it, Carl.
Thank you for sharing this. It is indeed amazing. :)
"Cosmos" and Carl Sagan were awesome. And back in 1980 when it was made, scientists thought the universe was approx. 15 billion years old. And today we know that it is 13.7 billion years old, so their estimate was almost correct. : )
Things are so clear when he explains.Great narrator and knowledgable person.
The Cosmic Calendar is an amazing way to look at human origin. What an achievement of science! In our universe, physics became chemistry... chemistry became biology... and biology became intelligence. As they said in the movie Contact: "The answer was staring you in the face all along".
Remember when you tried to be the top astrophysicist but you couldn't appreciate the subtlety of the most valuable data points humans have ever collected?
you have brought me giddy i've not felt in years.
So amazing...
In the Cosmic Calendar The Great Pyramids were built December 31st 11:59:50 PM Jesus was born 11:59:55 PM, Columbus Sailed 11:59:58 PM. Mind blowing.
He is the new Carl Sagan, and was taught by him. Carl Sagan himself called him up.
Thank you for all the speculation and theory.
I only wish he were still here. We could use someone like Carl now and he would be so happy to see us returning to the moon with Artemis. Fuck cancer.
BEAUTIFUL :)
These years are just passing by faster and faster!

3:19 That's a handsaw. I still use the modern version of that tool for pruning trees. I always figured the saw was a fairly modern invention and that people just used axes back in ancient times.
Wow! Impressive
This idea of a Cosmic Calendar was genius.
I remember when Cosmos first aired I was a boy almost eight years old, the first episode blew me away.
I would've loved to have met Carl Sagan before his untimely death.
I was 14 when Cosmos aired on Norwegian TV in 1981.
Sagan was brilliant. I have read his books. His warnings were NOT a presage to global climate change. He was directly worried that Nuclear War would be the likely cause of devastation to our planet. His message was of understanding and care among ALL people, which can easily, and in some cases, be rightly supportative of: care for our planet. But he was not an original Global Warning advocate, or prophet of doom. In fact, he was always cautiously optimistic that Mankind would find ways to overcome our challenges through ingenuity, understanding, honest communication, and science.
No, Sagan was a dumbass.

Now, what I think is that you can wind back the clock to before the time when the temperature was 10^32 degrees and our common laws of physics break down. In this pre-big bang era, matter couldn't exist in the form it does today. The laws of physics were also different. The Universe was still infinite, because it expanded a finite amount.
Beautiful 🥲

So here we are, in the first second of January 1st. Will we make it to the second second?
Good question!
I'm less than 50 % certain that we will, at least as a global civilization.
goosebumps
where did u get this footage from?
This is a great illustrator of the Fermi Paradox.
Where is the evidence if there are advanced civilizations out there in the universe?
Our entire civilization occupies the last ten seconds of this cosmic year.
Our technologically advanced stage is in the last second.Allow three to five "Seconds" for any technologically advanced civilization, and it could have grown, lived for even ten times that span, then faded to nothingness two or three or four cosmic "Months" ago. There could be dozens, once a "Minute" for the last five "Months" and the evidence would have been erased by time.
The scale of time, and the vastness of the universe makes it highly unlikely that we would find evidence of even the most vast star empire.
I blame Star Trek, and like sci-fi TV for making the universe, and the scale of time seem a LOT more condensed than it really is.
where can I view the entire 13 episode series?
Thanks Carl. Feeling a lot of hope for the future. We are such an insignificant part of the universe. It Doesn’t give a shit about what we do with our lives. Life is pointless. We're all just stardust.

True true.
What a shame Sagan didn't live to see the James Webb telescope; it is blowing away everything we ever thought about the big bang
Well said , more scientists are finally coming round to the idea
No, but it is causing us to reconsider how soon galaxies formed after the BB occurred.
Watching from 2024.
Anyone know the title of the music that plays in the background?
The soul-stirring, haunting music for the TV series COSMOS was scored by Greek music director, VANGELIS. I consider Vangelis along with Hans Zimmer and John Williams as being the 3 most talented music directors in recent western cinematic history. Vangelis was also the music director for the stunning, original, 1982 Blade Runner movie, directed by Ridley Scott. Chariots of Fire is another film where Vangelis was the music director. Hans Zimmer is another towering musical genius. Inception, Sherlock, Interstellar, The Da Vinci Code... are some of the iconic films where Hans Zimmer was the music maestro. The love sequence music of Blade Runner (the 1982 film) and the ending sequence music of the films Inception and The Da Vinci Code will etch their musical grooves into your heart and soul. I keep listening to them again and again and again (on UA-cam). Look up these films and listen to the musical tracks that I've mentioned here.
The music that plays during the actual cosmic calendar sequence is "Metamorphosis" by W. Jeffrey Boydstun, while the music at the end is "Heaven and Hell, Part 1 (Movement 3)" by Vangelis.
The ad before this is about a mormon scientist. I would take Sagan over him any day.
@LlamaInk So basically your saying that energy can be created? If that is so, then what is the point of the first law? Just to confuse people?
@funfdogg Yes, He died of cancer in 1997.
@amcanmike or how big and extraordinary, how special we really are, and how we must prevail alive
@1958boomergirl if you wonder that, i'm afraid you've missed the point of the ending. yes we matter, a lot. as sagan put it, 15 billion years of developing universe have gone into making us. that's pretty significant.
@LlamaInk "No energy was created at the big bang"
So where did the energy come from? It was just there? Doesn't that need some explanation?

@amcanmike What amazes me more than seeing just how small we are, is seeing just how beautiful nature works intelligently to create something to reflected on itself, on a little planet lost in space somewhere. @stylesurfers 1. The universe is now known to be no more that 13.8 billion years old, which screws up every percentage in the video. Not by a massive percentage, but it gives it a much larger margin of error.
