  • Next on the list of RESIN ALTERNATIVES is AQUA RESIN! This is a whole new realm for me because we AQUA RESIN has FIBERGLASS PRODUCTS?! I've never worked with fiberglass before, especially in art! But OMGGGG it was super interesting....😳 It's supposed to make whatever you make with AQUA RESIN STRONGER but you'll just have to see what happens... WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?!

So it looks like Jesmonite and Aqua Resin are pretty much the same thing. Both are acrylic reinforced gypsum products, with a water based acrylic resin and a gypsum based binding agent, but Aqua Resin adds in the fiberglass element for structure and stability, which makes it better for sculpting. Either way, both still contain a resin element. I would suggest checking out Ecopoxy. They make regular epoxy resin products, but are non toxic and water based like Jesmonite and Aqua Resin. I love Ecopoxy resin cuz it works just like regular resin but doesn't give off any fumes and has *no* smell!

@@victoriawhite5123 I've used the FlowCast, which is a slow cure, deep pour resin, and the UVPoxy, their coating resin (though I use it in jewelry & other shallow molds) and it's worked really well! It's epoxy resin, so still plastic and not biodegradable, but it's at least made from bio based ingredients and is non toxic, so I count that as a win🤷‍♀️

@@shaunacorrigan9372 I'm interested in doing things with molds. Some smaller molds like coasters but I also have a large, roughly 10" for each side and about 2" deep that I wanted to place some pressed flowers and such in. Do you know if I'd be able to use any of their products for that? Is obviously have to be very patient and do many layers, but that's true with just about anything unless I use the stuff people use for river tables 😅

    • @victoriawhite5123

I should specific I was really wanting to try using the UVPoxy for the larger mold, because it is going to be placed outside

The real question is, Heather, is there a product that is as crystal clear as Polyester Resin that is non toxic? If I were working with children, getting them to set something like dried flowers, could I do it? That is the ultimate goal, right?

Mod Podge® Dimensional Magic is non toxic and I’ve seen lots of artists use it for the tops of clay pins. You could definitely see if it works with flowers !! Bottle cap charms.

I wanted to be able too uave clear bases and that was the only thing I could find. Thank u for all your videos they are great!!

I am SO glad you tried the Aqua Resin because I have seen people in the UK using Jesmonite. I wanted to give it a try, but it's not yet available in the USA. The colors you chose were very vibrant which is something that I just didn't want to lose. I developed an allergy to resin, so this might be an excellent alternative. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!!! Love it!💗

Jesmonite and Aqua Resin are both Acrylic-reinforced gypsum products, which means they are similar to plaster with their own liquid that acts as a binder. So it's basically Jesmonite from what I am finding out and there isn't much out there either. Am always looking for new resin types, but am also looking for those which are crystal clear, as most of my work features looking into the piece. Outside of that, this is something worth exploring at a later date.

  • @bipolarchemist

Glad to hear that you had a pretty good experience with aqua resin. It is something that I've been looking at as an alternative to jesmonite as you can actually get it in the US. And there might be some differences in how the gypsum(plaster of paris) is modified and the exact aqueous polymer/resin blend, but I'd say that the two are pretty much the same. Elichem also makes a similar product called Hydroflow Eco Resin. Again, it is a gypsum/resin composite so it will have that same sorta-white color, but it is much like jesmonite for me, next to impossible to source in the US.
But what I'd love to know if how each one compares, weight-wise. Are they more or less dense than plain gypsum. I believe you commented on gypsum vs jesmonite vs concrete and if I remember correctly, jesmonite was heavier/denser than gypsum. Did it feel as if the same might hold true for aqua resin?
And good luck with the search. I'm not sure if you'll find a clear alternative, but maybe some mixed products with reduced amounts of epoxy resin can lead to some new cool ideas/projects.

Thank u for doing this video.. glad to kno u can mix pigments into the Aquaresin..question tho.. what do u seal it w? Do u have to use the fiberglass? The black tho do u need a specific colorant for it? Some of the stuff u have I o kno is for “molding stuff” and I do kno it’s used in Cosplay outfits .. lemme kno about the black colorant tho. 1 more question the 3D Crete from CCDIY seemed to b lighter than the aquaresin w black when u poured it tho? Mayb different lighting? (Shrugs) .. but again thank u for this video!

I’m curious if there’s something safer than resin out there that could be used for slush casting. I make dolls that way so they are hollow and the urethane resin I use is kind of toxic but it’s the only thing I know if that is durable enough to be thin and cures fast enough
