- I wanted to start a series where we test out resin alternatives like JESMONITE! I really put this stuff to the test. We tried adding acrylic paint, embedding dried flowers, dusting glitter & different ways to topcoat!

Things to keep in mind when your trying to determine how eco a product is:
1. it's all relative, compared to epoxy, jesmonite may be less harmful, but isn't perfectly eco friendly. 2. Regulations on what is organic or eco are not strict. Things can be marked as recyclable or biodegradable, but these claims are often overstated. 3. Not everything organic is good and not everything synthetic is bad. There are many organic toxins and technically everything is made up of chemicals so context is key when these buzz words get thrown around. 4. When considering using biodegradable vs non biodegradable materials, again non biodegradable is not always bad. Glass and stone and metal are all natural materials but they aren't biodegradable. Biodegradable items are generally plant and animal matter that can be broken down by organic processes (ie degested by plants, animals or microbes). Stone isn't bio degradable but it's broken down by weathering. Plastics are photodegradable, meaning they're broken down into smaller pieces by UV/solar radiation. The concern with plastics comes from research that shows they can leach harmful compounds into the environment which can affect living things. However, depending on what you are making, you may not want something easily biodegradable because it may not last long enough to be useful. On the flip side, when making things with resin for example, you have to consider how long it will be useful or trendy before it gets tossed.
I hope this is helpful. Navigating the world of safe consumership is really confusing and it doesnt help that most of us don't have the technical knowledge or that manufacturers aren't always transparent with their processes or product safety.
I started watching your channel in 2020 when I took up resin to make a gift of a dried clover keychain and was inspired by your projects to make some resin jewelry. I do want to eventually stop using resin once I use up my supplies. I'm also into other arts/crafts and it can be a real struggle to find supplies or crafts that are durable and also eco friendly. I appreciate that you are exploring these things too and that we can all learn together.

I think being a 'well rounded' artist, or a 'jack of all trades', when it comes to art, is really important. If you want to make a living doing art, and loving what you're doing, knowing how to do a lot of things can really take you places!

The gypsum is 100% biodegradable, the acrylic is still just plastic. Doesn’t degrade to anything more than a microplastic.
There’s debate bc of this if Jesmonite is considered to be an “eco-resin” or not despite that the resin used is water-based and not oil-based. Water-based is still considered MORE eco-friendly than oil-based resins, that is true. Information regarding this debate is aplenty within that community if you’re interested. You can also look into “bio-resins” which aren’t petroleum/oil or water-based but vegetable/plant based resins. That being said, any community that isn’t sustainable will harm the environment no matter how “environmentally friendly” the products they’re using are. While it may seem sustainable now increased consumerism around more eco-friendly products may reduce its sustainability. Right now, however, the main concern regarding bio-resins is the higher cost.
Another, usually overlooked, concern includes production as that’s not often accounted for in the final product’s “eco-friendliness” leading to a lot of greenwashing that’s rampant right now as everyone looks for “eco-friendly” alternatives to everything. My understanding regarding the gypsum at least is that it is pretty sustainable and more eco-friendly than many other alternatives. The water-based acrylic I’m unsure of. There’s going to be trade-offs. In my opinion, I’m a biochemist so I’m biased here, stick to peer-reviewed research and investigate the company and the products production as well as the product. And to offset any guilt, besides reducing and recycling there’s always reusing. Your trash may be someone else’s treasure and can extend the life-time of your artwork by A LOT even if ultimately it will end up in a landfill or the ocean. Jesmonite isn’t a bad place to start for alternatives to be honest. Especially if your concerns are health and eco related.
If you’re interested in more eco-friendly alternatives in life citizen sustainable should have many products you use for art and info about them but ultimately your best bet is learning how to read peer-reviewed research and industry jargon while personally finding the balance and trade-offs for being more eco-friendly and sustainable while still creating the art you want. ♥️
Oh and as another commenter pointed out I’m using quotations around a bunch of words bc they’re community derived as there’s no legal protections around what is “eco” and “green” etc! *cough* greenwashing *cough* even “organic” can be a minefield as often your vision and the legal definition of what companies can legally use are far, far different. Another reason, and again I’m biased, for sticking to peer-reviewed research. Definitions in science matter A LOT so I would start there and then base your judgements around those definitions and how your own independent research on products matches those definitions. I know it sucks, the onus is on you and it requires a lot of consumer work and diligence but the positive changes I’m seeing in the general public in these last two three years alone dwarf those since I’ve been studying global change in the last ten years (I studied in Alaska it’s basically required for all degrees bc of Arctic amplification. No one you’re studying under there isn’t researching it bc of the prime location to do so on this half of the globe). And companies can’t sell to people who won’t buy so after the greenwashing stops and Congress actually defines some good legal stipulations around eco marketing, hopefully they’ll switch to making more meaningful changes and increased transparency.
Last I knew, your channel wasn't called "RESIN Madwoman"... 😉 Art takes many paths, and I'm happy you let us frolick down the way with you!

I have been having trouble with FDA approved epoxy, it won't harden for some reason. I am going to try this and see how it comes out.

also just wanted to say i totally support your move away from resin! hearing you speak about your health anxiety and how you took all the necessary precautions but were still anxious was really validating for me as i am the same way about strong chemicals, and often feel like i'm being overly cautious. but we gotta do what we can to feel safe! glad you'll be able to make art in a way that hopefully improves your mental health rather than degrading it!!

I really respect your decision to not use epoxy any more.... I have also stopped only 8 months into first using it..... my short story- I had not used epoxy for a couple of weeks so did not relate it to the skin reaction, but I did sand the sharp edges, then I put moisturiser on my face and neck then I had a huge reaction and ended up putting myself into the hospital, they gave me the correct medication and alot of skin peeled off my face as it had destroyed it, I also went to see a dermatologist which confirmed the reaction plus other things that I was allergic to... I also felt very guilty about all this useless (albeit pretty creations) that I was putting out into the world and polluting it even more..... I was wondering then what I am going to use all the hundreds of dollars that I had spent on molds and decided that I will use them for chocolate creations......... stay beautiful xx
Sherry Moulton uses Tri Art Liquid Glass to seal a lot of things. It's very glossy and dries much faster than resin. Also Julie Cutts uses a metallic paint pen on the edges of a lot of her coasters. It really finishes them beautifully. A couple of suggestions .
I love how the spray left part of the book end matte and some gloss.
Your projects turned out great. You may possibly lose some people who are into resin, but truthfully, Jesmonite is the new thang, so Im sure you will gain a whole new following. Thanks for the tutorial, and have fun crafting ❤️
As someone who works with resin daily and is also allergic, i have had many recommendations to try crystalac. Its supposed to be non toxic and a great alternative to resin. However, I have yet to try it out because i know how to work resin and what results to expect. I do commissioned work and worry about the resilience of crystalac over time (brittle/yellowing/reactions to inks or pigment) This would be a really cool thing to see you try out because I know you know resin soooo well, and i would trust your judgment. Just a thought 😊 as for your channel going a different direction, im pumped! I love seeing many different art forms and also love seeing your creativity come out in a new light! Keep being your lovely creative self always!!!
Crystalac is over priced you have to watch for brush marks it is not worth it just my opinion.
Crystalac works great for sealing, you just have to know how to use it. Their site has all the info and guides you need.
I watch you as a maker on YT, I love how you try so many different kinds of arts and crafts! I admit that I started watching for your resin pieces, however I really respect your choice to take your art journey in a different direction! Thank you so much for sharing your process with us! Don't worry about people thinking your reasoning for not working with resin anymore doesn't make sense. Anxiety doesn't usually make sense. Anybody who experiences anxiety knows it often doesn't make sense; knowing that doesn't make it easier to deal with. Do what you need to do. I'm pretty new too your channel, but I really enjoy your work, no matter the medium.

I make Jesmonite products for my business, making terrazzo is so much easier if you mix the chips into the Jesmonite and then sand back the surface. Also the dye is only supposed to be 2% of the mix so that’s why the first one took so long to dry. You’re best off sealing with either the acrylic sealer or with some coconut oil, it really brings out the colour 😊

I've just started watching your videos today (literally all day as I've been sick in bed) and am now a new subscriber simply because your awesome and you make some incredible things! But I just wanted to say.... do NOT apologize for doing something or changing something for yourself, your health, and your mental health! You absolutely do NOT sound stupid! I've been slightly obsessed with watching resin crafts for over a year now but have the same fears that you do! I have small children that are attached to my hip and not a safe ventilated area to do crafts. So thank you very much for showing another option!!
I'm so excited about your new crafting ventures! 🥰 I've always loved pressing flowers, and during COVID I began using resin for floral jewellery. Since then, I've started a small business where I create with resin. However, I've had the same feelings about using it in terms of wanting to try something new (and the expense! I'm a student and resin can get pricey, lol!)
I've been trying polymer clay to create mock 'gemstones' and do still apply resin as a topcoat. I would love to learn more about full bouquet preservation and creating custom shadowboxes or something similar.

So glad you finally found Jesmonite. I have completely given up on epoxy due to it being so toxic and not very environmentally friendly and swapped to Jesmonite. It’s such a beautiful product and the curing time is soo fast . Also remember the pieces can leave sweat marks if you leave it in the mould too long. I’m definitely a big fan of it and can’t wait to see what you come up with x
I'd be down for jemonite if it could be as clear as epoxy resin. That crystal clearness is why I use to traditional resin.

I love that the surface of the flowers show such texture. I'm on the same page as you with resin. I still do some, but I've been dabbling in decoupage. I'm liking it. I'm mostly doing the jars.

It's not stupid for you to take steps to mitigate your anxiety! One thing I would say, as someone who also lives with health anxiety (and anxiety disorder in general), I have found that learning about the thing I'm anxious about to the point where I truly understand how it works, makes me feel way better. If you want to, trying to learn how the chemistry of resin works and what exactly the fumes do to the human body might really help alleviate your anxiety. Of course, if you don't miss resin, then avoiding it is also totally legitimate!

Lol honestly your speaking my language my whole life I have been crafting and have always thought ("what is wrong with you") I get all the supplies get good at it then get bored and want to try something new! I started with resin in the same time when you upload your video with thermochromic change resin coasters. You literally change my life and I thank you for that. You opened beautiful door of art for me. Unfortunately I finished with resin in the same time like you haha:D I also have anxiety of that and I dont have safe place where I can work with it so I moved to polymer clay. I used to work before but I fallen in love with it again. I still love resin and I still watching other people work and always thinking like these people are really brave
Absolutely does not sound stupid. Since developing cancer at age 46 I learned just how much chemicals impact our lives negatively. My life has become so sensitive to chemicals that I must be very cautious of getting exposed to harsh chemicals. So while you are younger you are wise to avoid chemicals as much as you can. What you do now WILL affect you in the future. Good luck my darling.

I’m sure it wasn’t easy to talk about it since there’s still so many who don’t understand that it’s not always easily explained. I have anxiety, too. It’s not always rational. My sweet girl, you have no one to answer to but yourself. I’m proof that chemicals can be dangerous. I have practically every illness known, and a few not, and it all is most likely due to much too much exposure growing up. (Or maybe hypochondria🤪) Also, I am a 66 years old creative that has always wanted to try every thing I ever saw.( right now that means making my own real ukulele🤪🤪) the adults in my life gave me a hard time about not sticking to one thing. Now I know that the best thing that you can do is allow a child to try every thing, instead of waiting until college. It’s cheaper too. So go for it girl, as long as you can, and I’ll be watching and supporting you. I wish you could know how much you bolster my spirit and help me to get through the day. I even watch some of your videos over when I’m really in need of a pick me up. Keep it up and Know, I’ve got your back. I’m so excited for this material. With my chemical history, my hubby doesn’t really want me to use resin.

I am so excited for whatever you do thats why i subscribe... there are other products like jesmonite that you can try to plasterof paris, permastone, quick cements ect... I got permastone in a craft kit and loved it! it was so fast and fun to use ! also they are all cheap! anywho I'm glad your doing what's best for you hun cause in the end that's all that matters ... ❤

To not get the streaky effect with the sculpy finish try using a silicone brush to apply it. They have no bristles so should not have that issue with it. I am also loving seeing you experimenting with new mediums. There is so much out there to try. Have fun with it.
You don't need to justify yourself. You have concerns. You want to branch out. Fabulous!! You're growing!! A fantastic and wonderful aspect of human existence! Enjoy!
I love your personality and enthusiasm. I know I'm late at starting to do Resin, but I'm really interested in it for personal projects only. But I was hesitant because of all the side effects. I still have to get everything just to start. Didn't realize how much everything is lol. Your actually the first person I watched to get idea on how to start. I watched your video where you bought three different epoxy kits and since then I really want to start. I love your mood paint ideas also. I know you have your issues and I respect that, but I was watching a video on VMD Designs and she was trying out 2 kits that might interest you. One was Just Resin Watercote and the other was Crystalac Brite Tone Tumbler Kit. These are for Tumblers and probably pens and top coats. I asked if they can be used for molds and they respond they they are not for molds. But maybe you might like them to top off your projects. You might want to watch the video because they are a different epoxy they do take more coats. Who knows you might like them and feel safe. Keep up your spirits.

Thanks for this thoughtful video. I recently finished my first resin project of preserving a portion of a relative’s wedding bouquet. It turned out beautiful, all thanks to you! I was a little sad to hear this news but I feel the same. The results of flowers in resin are amazing but all the safety precautions make for a tedious process that I didn't enjoy. I will do more with resin but the times may be few and far between. This project looks interesting. I enjoy seeing what crafts you come up with and will stay subscribed. 👍

I discovered resin art because of this channel, but I totally share the anxiety you have around it and feel like I need to step away from it as well. But I agree with the other comments that exploring other media doesn't take away from the joy of watching your videos and the other things you can do. 🥰
I don't care what form of art ur using to create things, it's the 'way' ur presenting both the material and urself that hooked me initially and kept me here! Plus, watching someone try new things, and learn, and *not be an expert* at them?? Refreshing!! Like, i actually like seeing when ppl make discoveries or mistakes, not because it's mean, but because that makes them relatable!! It means they're willing to show us - the newbies - what can happen!! And that it's OK!! That's soo freaking appreciated!! So keep on trying new things! It's fun for all of us!!
(Also, question for anyone to answer... Isn't that stuff being used just reminding anyone else of plaster??? Or is it just me??)

To elaborate on my reply to earlier, learning new skills can add to your resin game too. This year I got a cricut and it's totally upped my resin game. Making holo stickers to add to trays or keychains has been so rewarding! I love it! I haven't updated my insta yet with my first series of trays. I'm really excited about them. 😃 😃 😊 😀 😄
LOVE THIS SO MUCH!! You’re the first person at least that I’ve seen speak about this, too. While many resin projects look so fun, I struggled with the idea of creating more hard plastics in to the world.
My only question is, how do you feel about using acrylic paints, as they are also essentially plastics?

I totally get it! I'm hyper active and anxious as well! I love to try new things when it comes to art too. I get bored easily. Although I have found a medium that keeps me going. I love to crochet! You can create so many different things and work with different threads when bored with one type of thread

Ok, first love your channel for all the reasons. Here are my thoughts....
Love that you are branching out into all things arts and crafty. Trying new things is good. All valid points on working with resin. Moving forward, all things in moderation. Try new things, do stuff, but an occasional resin project is cool too. But working with it exclusively is limiting and potentially hazardous. So I think to have a well rounded interesting ever changing channel, do all the things that interest you and throw in an occasional resin project as well. Much love. I think this a very smart and I totally agree with you. It's a good idea to limit our exposure to resin and take great precautions when we use it. I also stress about health concerns with it. Thank you for introducing me to alternatives :). Take care

Love watching you 💗 no matter what art mediums you are doing. Here are a few tips that might help you with Jesmonite it has its own sealant. It should be removed from the mold within 40 minute to prevent sweating. I also think your creative space might be on the cool side and that’s why it took longer to dry. Please keep exploring new creative outlets 🥰
The spray is beautiful for a coating…almost had a mirror effect 😊 the brush on coating is definitely not appealing at all…all them streaks were bad. So cool that you found an alternative for resin and you’re experimenting with different mediums…very helpful and forward thinking. We need more non toxic people and products 🌈🙌
A tip for you. I put those gold flakes in a pepper grinder, it allows you to make gold dust flakes that are more controllable. Just grind over your project to add a teensy amount of sparkle!
I love your personality and don't care what you are doing as long as you are doing it (plus hubs and sibs sometimes). Also, don't ever Apologize for being or doing what you want to. These look great- thanks for sharing new techniques. I think I like the rustoleum one a little more because it almost looks like that oil slick stuff.
You should try wax or gel wax which is clear. Wax is also a good alternative to seal dried flowers for a longer period of time. And you can make beautiful scented candles encasing dried flowers.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about resin. I bought some of the material for a project I I wanted to do. I work with children and love sharing arts and craft with the families. But after researching the damages of resin, I returned the materials. I have asthma, and is not worth putting my health at risk. Thanks for your honesty,

Look.. I started doing needle punching after seeing you make carpet. I had no idea a normie could do either of those things! I'm disabled and really love crafting, but it's so hard on my back and my hands don't work so good no more from nerve damage lol.. When I watched your videos on tufting, I found similar smaller scale crafts to do in embroidery and needle punching. Needle punching is perfect for someone with my health conditions and I've started trying to master it. That's all thanks to you! So keep doing what you want to do, because the following will come with time. Stay true to yourself.

It's interesting that you comment that Jesmonite smells like Pepto Bismol because Pepto's key ingredient is Bismuth - another type of mineral. Look up Bismuth Crystals online, they look so amazing in their colour and formations!
I have a air quality monitor that I use in my workspace. It has three colors, red, yellow and green. It has never turned red but it will be a greenish yellow no different from other household chemicals according to my monitor. I still watch, your work is great.
Resin or no resin...I think you and your family are awesome and every video I've watched has sparked some type of creativity in me.
