Smart Home Solver yeah on a pc , but who uses it like that ? how about switching to diffenrt sources ?? that’s too much trouble , it supposed to work on tv with syncbox and those 2 together are way to expensive for some lights behind your tv .. I like HUE , but this is hilarious

Just hooked the 75 set up on my 85 inch tv... I have the down lights and play bars too... it’s ridiculously expensive but ridiculously awesome when you get them all going

Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
I think this would be worth it if the light strip had its own sync software built in and connected to your TV via USB or something but not many people have Macs or PCs connected to their TVs so requiring an already very expensive Sync Box on top of a very expensive light strip makes it a no for me
Yeah all the different boxes and price makes it less appealing. The fact that you need the light strip, hue bridge, and sync box or Samsung Sync App makes it very cumbersome and expensive.
I have been waiting for something like this from Philips for such a long time. I have spent a ridiculous about of money on Hue lights but I do thoroughly enjoy them. Although this light strip will be yet another absurd amount of money I will def be getting it. I tried using seven play bars around the back of my 75 inch tv along with the sync box, and although it works okay it is very difficult to try and position the seven play bars around the tv when creating an entertainment area in the Hue app. I really hoped they would add something to the Hue app to where it shows a front or rear view of a TV so you can position the play bars more accurately, but I guess the gradient light strip is their solution. Either way I love Philips products although yes they are insanely expensive. But if they work well and they actually last a long time then I am okay paying good money for things.
I read that the way the Hue sync box is able to update fast enough is by delaying the picture a little bit, and syncing to the delayed picture. Did you try any gaming? Could you? I'm curious how bad the lag is.
I use FreeSync ultimate on my Samsung TV. I did have weird and annoying issues initially with the sync box when it launched. My screen would go black constantly when I played games. To remedy it I turned FreeSync ultimate off and recently re-enabled it. So I'm not sure if it was fixed with an update or not. It works great now.
I, also, have multiple game systems and a cable box hooked up to mine. 3 hue play lights and an overhead canister light. Never had any lag or issues. It’s the only way I game now.
I had alot of dropped signals to my Switch and PS4 Pro in the first few months of use. It would be a critical cutscene or something, then Prnnnt.. My console cables were fairly new and in fine shape, as far as I could tell. I also was using the provided hdmi cable that came with the Sync for Output. I ordered a few of the following to replace the Output and Ps4 Pro hdmi cabling, and have had little to zero drops since. www.amazon.com/Belkin-AV10175bt2M-BLK-Vision-Optimal-Viewing/dp/B075N83B9X I love the sync so much, so I just got my lightstrip. It sucks so hard that it will not work with PS5 at 120....Graah
these look great! I hope it's not too distracting though. I can't wait for the next iteration that will have 4K,120Hz passthrough. Hopefully some HDMI 2.1 on the next model.
Stumbled upon this vid whilst searching for the gradient strip. What I did for my 65 inch; placed the gradient strip as usual. For the dark bottom part I used 3 play bars (left mid right). I used the V-brackets that came with the bars to stick them to the back of the TV. They face straight to the wall behind. The intensity difference was really annoying just like in this video. I "solved" this by setting the strip and bars on a static color at 100% brightness. Next I adjusted the hight of the bars (bit by bit about 10 centimeters total) upwards until intensity looked the same. It looks like a 360 gradient strip now. Really happy with this set-up. Maybe your screen is too close to the wall for this to work though... but who knows it might work for you as well.
I’m front the future. Good luck finding them! My order from Best Buy was supposed to be here weeks ago. Nobody has them in stock and those that do, are asking almost $500-$600 for the 65”.
Good thing about it is it is being recognized as one device, hue sync box can take up to 10 I heard. I am currently at 8 and still considering going two more play bars which ends up at 10, with that I won't be able to add a strip that wanted to place under my couch. I might just get this new strip and get rid of all play bars from behind a TV. Also, in my opinion, best effect is when you add hue signe on both sides, these are just mind blowing. Great video by the way
I just use all play bars (8 of them) so it blends better. 2 behind tv (top and bottom), 2 behind each tower speakers. So the tower speakers I have top one face the wall and one below it face away from the tv. Then last 2 bars behind the sofa. Hue app you can set if the light is tv height, on the floor, or ceiling. Accurately adjusting this really helps.
Nice demo but to get this effect using the Philips Gradient Lightstrip can work out to be costly when you add up the price of the lightstrip, the hue bridge & the hue sync box the whole setup will cost you around £500+. The cheaper option is to just buy a Philips Hue Ambilight TV. I have the 65PUS8204 which will cost you arond £500 with three sided ambilights, Dolby Vison/atmos is built in. Any thing left in your budget can be put to a few extra Hue lamps to go in the corners of the room for an even extra added effect but you will need the hue brdge for any extra bulbs to work with the TV.
I have put ws2812b on the back of my tv ne have them sync with thing called Hyperion project. It’s a bit delayed because I’m controlling the lights over lan butt otherwise its super pretty!
I recently sold my discontinued DreamScreen 4K to get the sync box, gradient strip, and several play bars (4 on bottom/2 left & right) for my 65” Sony A8H OLED TV. I already have Hue lighting so the integration is seem-less. Along with the Sonos Arc, Sub, and L/R surround speakers. We look forward to movie nights.
The biggest thing for me is this is the most seamless solution, less janky, longer lasting, probably cheaper in the long run, part of an ecosystem like Sonos, and has dolby vision, 4k 60fps passthrough with the sync box and can be extended to the whole house integrated into a seamless smart ecosystem.
Hi, thanks for the video. I just completed DIY Hyperion setup few days back. Philips HUE is definitely at the TOP when it comes to user friendly setups compared to the options that we have in the market and much much easier/ simpler compared to all the DIY setups. I would still go for the DIY setup (Raspberry PI, LED Strip, Video Grabber etc.) because the entire setup costs less than 100$ and works exactly how this setup works. I do agree DIY is not for everyone but if someone is tech savvy then it should not be a problem.
If I was trying to fix the bottom section I would stick something over the bottom lights such as some white fabric. You can also get shower stickers so that you can't see through the glass. You can put a few layers of the shower stickers on the cover of the lights.
Better solution is to get frost gel from a theatrical supply store, it blurs the light passing through it. A sheet costs about $7 and can be cut to fit the fixtures
This setup is wonderful looking, nice work on it! Are you just using a soundbar instead of a receiver for running your setup? Our receiver takes all our HDMI inputs and we send one cable up to the tv from the receiver, I would imagine that would be easier to just put the sync box in from receiver to TV cable setup. Either way, I'm loving this! We may do a HomeKit based video on this soon, after we buy all of it 😀
I found a way to have a backsplash of a static colors. Follow this. 1.music+moderate 2.play a song 3.when you found a color that you like stop sync. 4. Enjoy. Also you cannot change the brightness after you stop sync or it will revert to a solid color. Like so every one can see. Thank you.
some people call it bias ambient light, and you can diy it with a raspberry pi and some leds for about $120 without the need for a pc or a phillips hub. i installed it on the back of my tv in about an hour.
Sync box = €250, Lightstrip = €200, 2 play lights = €130. €580 is an astronomical price for just that experience which when mounted does not cover the entire TV and is not even individually addressed!.I have lots of hue bulbs inside and outside but will never purchase again since learning about WLED and other example projects. I have 2 hyperion setups and these are just a fraction of that price while doing more. Thanks for the vid though.
Love the idea and the pre packed light strip in a protective flexible channel .....however as it is it’s looks abit of a rush job by Phillips , the kit should encompass the entire external back area of the tv - Lifx will no doubt bring out a much better variant 🤞- my house if full of Lifx and I generally find Lifx are much much much better with a better app too . Good video thanks
My Govee segmented light strips does this. It comes with a camera and mimics what’s on the tv. It’s a simple design that works imo better. You can also easily control the brightness and how fast it responds.
I have the Govee, it's excellent! Works with everything, even UA-cam, or Netflix. It's easier to set up as well. The app works on a tablet too. It is perfect for a 65 in TV.
@@Farfignewton29 I ordered mine from America. It costs more, but still less than Phillips Hue. Best to get the plug adaptor, and a USB extension lead in advance.
I have both....and I like Govee....but they are not accurate. Thats the downside for me.....hue solution is way more accurate but just to expensive. And the hue box doesn't do hdmi 2.1.
Great content this video was very informative! These are so expensive though. What are peoples thoughts on the Govee Immersion TV Backlight LED Strip Kit?
So Philips are basically selling there amibilight system for every TV now Awsome just shame about the price. Poor hibbert won't be happy "oohh the ZigBee"
Pfft.. ZigBee is alright. Just use it ONLY for your Philips Hue shit and be done with it. Frankly, I'm more worried about wifi stuff that has no right being on wifi. Things like wifi switches and dimmers and stuff really upset me. There's no good reason to use wifi for such simple devices over Z-wave. Z-wave is more energy efficient and it doesn't clog up your wifi network. Myself, I only use Zigbee for my Hue lights, Wifi for my Google Home speakers (thanks Google for being a fucking twat and not including RJ45 ports on them!) and Z-wave (everything else). I have a single Google Home connected to a usb->power+ethernet dongle and that's the only smart speaker that works all the time so it's in my bedroom. I HAVE to be able to tell Google to turn off my lights when I'm lying in my bed all comfy and not have it interrupt me with "I CAN'T SEEM TO CONNECT TO YOUR WIFI RIGHT NOW PLEASE CHECK YOUR CONNECTION SETTINGS IN THE GOOGLE HOME APP"... the bitch that she is. :)
Love the work, keep "em coming. One question, in Europe this is Hue PLAY Gradient Lightstrip. This was way in 2020 so dunno if that was the name then .Cheers !!
Just bought one based on your review. I love the idea of adding the hue play for up lighting. My tv is on a stand so I am going to use it first with the gradient lighting strip only and add the hue play if I need it. Thank you fir the great review!!
This like is very nice . Idk if I’m a fan. It’s kinda distracting for me. I would like it just to use when the tv is off. Just how I feel but it does looks really nice
I've litterly done the same buttons for my sync box how convenient is that A is to turn the box on/off B for turning the sync on/off C for higher brightness D for lower brightness
I've got the hue lights and bridge already in my household so this would be perfect! Only think of i want to use these with a 100" projector screen. Will these work or do I need the play bars?
Gradient light strip looks great but the major downside is still the sync box which does not work with today's smart tvs inbuilt apps. Not so smart philips 🧐. Who would want to buy additional firestick, chromecast, apple tv separately when all is inbuilt in the tv these days?
Amazing! That is impressive. I miss it so much!!! I'm so annoyed that my lights lost sync after one year. The only possible reason that came to my mind is the TV software update. Myself I didn't change nothing. I have reset Philips Ambilight+Hue configuration a few times and final message says I'm ready to go but still not working. In the last I used to see in the Hue app that the lights were under the TV control and I could only disconnect them from TV. Now instead they seem all free to adjust from the app. I would really appreciate your help and advice! Thanks man
Just to clarify the sync box is not compatible with HDMI 2.1 so 4k@120 probably won’t pass through. BUT This likely will only be the case for a handful of games. 4k@60 should be the norm for most pS5 series X games which the sync box can handle
Yes, its called Philips Ambilight TVs… 🤷♂️ There is another brand with solution for this, Govee, but its done by camera facing the TV, and its not that fast, and looks ugly.
Tx for the in depth video. Around 5:50 you say that the sync box does not support apps on the Tv. hmm.. What if you do "hdmi out" from tv into sync box. Could that not solve it? Most tv´s only use apps.. no hdmi or external devices are connected any more. I ask, because I have feared what you say is true.. and its the only thing that have kept me from bying it.
Is there an option somewhere so the gradient light strip doesn't completely turn off when the screen is back? I find that very distracting. New user here
Well according to phillips (as of 10/08/20) it only works on 2.4ghz. So my single band modern won't connect my entertainment area. So now i have to take this box back. Most likely the gradient light whenever that comes also.
New subscriber, great video review. But I'm curious. If you "rounded up," could you simply wrap the excess to face down the wall? Thus, eliminate needing extra equipment--and the associated costs. Is that possible?
I think I'll stick with my Hyperion, WLED strips solution. Half the cost and LED's all round the tv together with brightness control in WLED app and further fine tuning in the Hyperion app. Not as plug and play but not a difficult setup to achieve with basic knowledge.
@@pvsmith2 No I don't have a 4K source but the way to set it up is to have a hdmi splitter and scaler then pass one through to the tv at 4K and pass the other at 1080p to the capture card. Hyperion doesn't need a 4K source and the capture card will be overloaded with it so use a splitter that can downscale that feed to 1080p for the capture card.
So the sync box is a go-between the TV and whatever the input devices but what if you’re watching something on an app on the TV. Such as Amazon prime that’s already installed on the TV?
Hey Reed you make great videos I wish i got to meet you in person, also when will you show us what's new in your house kind of like a house tour but just showing all smart home products
Great video the movie quotes matching the voice over was a nice touch 👍 I’m so tempted to get a gradient strip and sync box but with next gen looming do you think no HDMI 2.1 support will be a significant bottleneck? I don’t know what the forecast is for newer versions but do you expect to see a 2.1 revision in the not too distant future?
I have this exact question and considering I just got a PS5 and I'm going to upgrade my tv so it has 2.1 capability, this is a dealbreaker for me. For this price it should support HDMI 2.1 standard. I'm going to wait.
I intend to buy the Gradient lightstrip extension 40 inch ... can i use the Power supply unit & controller included of Lightstrip Plus Base i bought... it will works? for the bottom of my tv
Hi wondering if you can tell me wether this would work on an oled tv. For what i see the strip would go attached to the back of the screen and wondering if this would affect the tv?
For me it's 200 for the strip. 200 for the sync box and another 50 for the bridge 😣 Got an LG oled C9 65 inch.. but really want this tech 😅 looks real nice
No, because the program and sync box does not translate what is at the bottom of your screen (for the light strip specifically), you'll have to buy additional lighting it seems
What do you think, are these light strips synced with your TV beautiful enough for $200+?
NO, NO, NO!!!!!!
There should be a cheaper option!
its not just the strip , you also need the sync box
@Douwe Egbert you don't need the sync box. You can use the Hue Sync software on your computer. The sync box just makes it more convenient.

I have a couple of the Govees , bargain compared to Phillips
I have the Govee, it's excellent! Works with everything, even UA-cam, or Netflix. It's easier to set up as well. The app works on a tablet too. It is perfect for a 65 in TV.
I wanted to get the Govee setup with camera but they have been sold out for a very long time.
Thanks for not being swayed!
Great honest opinion!
Hopefully the set up goes on special for Black Friday
Can u show me how to connect apple tv to the sync box?
Excellent video. Excited for these 2 ship next month. Going to have to figure out something for the bottom with my play bars like you did.
So Philips are basically selling there amibilight system for every TV now
Awsome just shame about the price.
Poor hibbert won't be happy "oohh the ZigBee"
‘Oh the zigbee” lol, love Paul, he’s hilarious 😂
its their patent..still shity spec...
"for every TV" just for over 450€ when you can buy Philips's own 65" TV with lights for 700€
Still useless since it doesn't work for the buildin apps on a smart TV
Love the work, keep "em coming. One question, in Europe this is Hue PLAY Gradient Lightstrip. This was way in 2020 so dunno if that was the name then .Cheers !!
Just bought one based on your review. I love the idea of adding the hue play for up lighting. My tv is on a stand so I am going to use it first with the gradient lighting strip only and add the hue play if I need it. Thank you fir the great review!!
Yeah I bought the hue Gradient on pre sale. I haven't got it yet, but I love my setup now. I just wish I could do more lights then 10 in an area.
Dammit....and there I thought I wasn't going to buy any hue products this month lol.
Good thing they are available next month :) you can justify the addiction.
Kudzai Marira I have an addiction for Hue products also but they last a long time, that’s worth the money
At least the Hue Products last longer then buying a plant that would be gone after 2-4 days
just get a raspberry and sk6812 LED Strips and u have the same if not even better thing for only 60-80$
I am interested in getting started with Phillips Hue. What products do you have?
Great video. Hue Gradient is the best !!
I will buy it.
This like is very nice . Idk if I’m a fan. It’s kinda distracting for me. I would like it just to use when the tv is off. Just how I feel but it does looks really nice
Wonderful surprise to see Hibbert in the video 😜
Does the Sync box work with ARC and CEC? Both are really helpful in my situation
I've litterly done the same buttons for my sync box how convenient is that
A is to turn the box on/off
B for turning the sync on/off
C for higher brightness
D for lower brightness
I've got the hue lights and bridge already in my household so this would be perfect! Only think of i want to use these with a 100" projector screen. Will these work or do I need the play bars?
6:39 works every time
Nice video. Think I’d solve this by buying a Philipps TV with Ambilight then save the hassle.
Thanks man
Funny that hue released a new light with similarities to your setup, this is the way.
The very end was super cute! Ahh
Just to clarify the sync box is not compatible with HDMI 2.1 so 4k@120 probably won’t pass through. BUT This likely will only be the case for a handful of games. 4k@60 should be the norm for most pS5 series X games which the sync box can handle
I wonder when the sync box comes out that cansupport HDMI 2.1? Has anyone heard anything yet?
Is Philips developing something to be also used with smart tv apps (Netflix, UA-cam, etc)?
Yes, its called Philips Ambilight TVs… 🤷♂️ There is another brand with solution for this, Govee, but its done by camera facing the TV, and its not that fast, and looks ugly.
Unbelievable! no 4k, not for me... maybe next time.
Very informative video, thank you, great job
Tx for the in depth video.
Around 5:50 you say that the sync box does not support apps on the Tv. hmm.. What if you do "hdmi out" from tv into sync box. Could that not solve it?
Most tv´s only use apps.. no hdmi or external devices are connected any more.
I ask, because I have feared what you say is true.. and its the only thing that have kept me from bying it.
how much distance is recommended between the TV and the wall to have a nice ambilight experience?
This is the way
Season two is almost here!
Does the gradient effect work without a sync box or anything while your watching tv? Or do you need one
Hello again, have you seen Govee Immersion TV LED Backlights with Camera? Looks like it's a good cheaper alternative.
Is there an option somewhere so the gradient light strip doesn't completely turn off when the screen is back? I find that very distracting. New user here
I gotta say I really enjoy this channel tho!
Really like your videos!
Thanks for the tips 👍🏻
so would i be good with just buying the lightstrip and the hue sync box to start me off or do I need the hue bridge as well
So I need both the Gradient Light Strip and the Sync Box to make this work?
I think I'll stick with my Hyperion, WLED strips solution. Half the cost and LED's all round the tv together with brightness control in WLED app and further fine tuning in the Hyperion app. Not as plug and play but not a difficult setup to achieve with basic knowledge.
ive been looking into hyperion, do you have a 4k capture card you use?
@@pvsmith2 No I don't have a 4K source but the way to set it up is to have a hdmi splitter and scaler then pass one through to the tv at 4K and pass the other at 1080p to the capture card. Hyperion doesn't need a 4K source and the capture card will be overloaded with it so use a splitter that can downscale that feed to 1080p for the capture card.
So the sync box is a go-between the TV and whatever the input devices but what if you’re watching something on an app on the TV. Such as Amazon prime that’s already installed on the TV?
Would it work for apps on the Apple TV. Like UA-cam or Netflix?
Yes if you have your Apple TV plugged into the Sync Box then it will work with all the apps on the Apple TV.
Smart Home Solver Got it, thank you!!
Amazing honest review, subscribed! THIS IS THE WAY!! :D
I did this with a $45 a bit box kit but it was tough!!
Great video!! But do you need the hue box to synchronization with the TV !? Or just the Light strip !?
Hey Reed you make great videos I wish i got to meet you in person, also when will you show us what's new in your house kind of like a house tour but just showing all smart home products
Thanks! I have a few videos planned that are very similar to that, so keep an eye out!
@@SmartHomeSolver I will always keep an eye out also are you going to make videos for haloween and Christmas coming soon
Great video the movie quotes matching the voice over was a nice touch 👍
I’m so tempted to get a gradient strip and sync box but with next gen looming do you think no HDMI 2.1 support will be a significant bottleneck? I don’t know what the forecast is for newer versions but do you expect to see a 2.1 revision in the not too distant future?
I have this exact question and considering I just got a PS5 and I'm going to upgrade my tv so it has 2.1 capability, this is a dealbreaker for me. For this price it should support HDMI 2.1 standard. I'm going to wait.
I intend to buy the Gradient lightstrip extension 40 inch ... can i use the Power supply unit & controller included of Lightstrip Plus Base i bought... it will works? for the bottom of my tv
I’ve been waiting for this video!!!
Thanks, hopefully it gave what you needed to know!
Hi wondering if you can tell me wether this would work on an oled tv. For what i see the strip would go attached to the back of the screen and wondering if this would affect the tv?
For me it's 200 for the strip.
200 for the sync box and another 50 for the bridge 😣
Got an LG oled C9 65 inch.. but really want this tech 😅 looks real nice
What about buying the size bigger so you can get lights to almost wrap all the way around? Or will the color locations be off with the picture?
I would need the strip to go all the way around my tv. Could I put the 75” version on my 55” tv and have the bottom covered that way?
No, because the program and sync box does not translate what is at the bottom of your screen (for the light strip specifically), you'll have to buy additional lighting it seems
