Manual vs. Automatic Portable Washing Machine Comparison - Worth the Upgrade?

  • In today's video I'm comparing my four year old, twin tub, portable washing machine with a new, automatic single tub version. I purchased the updated model at the top of the year expecting to streamline my laundry process and make my life easier... that's not exactly been the case.
    I'll be sharing some of the biggest drawbacks I've noticed comparing the new device to the old one and give you a verdict on whether it's worth the upgrade. I hope this video is useful for anyone on the market for a portable washing machine (aka the best appliances for people in small spaces, renters or anyone else without a laundry hookup).

    It's funny how an older, less fancy device can work out to be better than a newer "better" one. Back when I was a teenager and was first moving out on my own, I bought the cheapest microwave I could find. It didn't have any special features, no turntable inside and no clock. In fact the timer worked much like an egg timer. After 21 faithful years the microwave still worked, but I decided to get a newer kind with fancy features. Two years later we had to buy another one. I kind of regret not having my old one anymore.

      Reading your comment and realizing I moved my microwave into my current apartment more than a decade ago and she's still going strong! She doesn't match the aesthetic of my kitchen and I have considered replacing her with one of those cute, vintage looking microwaves. I think I'll just keep using this one till the wheels fall off lol.

      Hi Shanel, welcome! Thanks for watching!
      The portable washer and dryer are probably the two items that have improved my quality of life more than any other things I've ever purchased. I seriously hope you're able to fit them into your new space, even if you just get the washing machine and air dry. It sounds like you're going through a major transition in life - you deserve anything that's going to make daily life less stressful! :)
      Best of luck with your move and your new apartment! A historic high rise? Is the architecture stunning?

    I chose a manual dual tub washer because it was more affordable at the time for me. I love it. I don't mind the manual work, I actually enjoy spending the time focused on my laundry cleaning. The manual washers clean better than my regular washer, and the spinner removed more excess water. Lately, I have been thinking of upgrading to an automatic washer, and some day I will. For now, you have convinced me that I don't need to upgrade right now. I still enjoy my washing. I also see on reviews of all the brands about the rotation being weaker, water level not as high as preferred or in short time problems with the water level, they do take up more space that I don't have much of, fittings on many faucets are a problem, water leakage from all types of hoses weather in the begining or later on. Not to say automatic portable washers are terrible. One day I will own one, but for now, I am content and thankful for my small washer. One day when I am in my own house and can hook my regular sized washer/dryer, I will only use them for the larger items like blankets, coats, house robe, large towels, etc that do not fit well in my manual portable washer/spinner and portable dryer. my opinion, you made the right choice.
    The only issue I found with my manual washer was the agitator belt coming off. It was easy to open the back panel and put it back on. That was after my second usage. It has not come off since. If it does, I can put it back on with no problem. It works great.

      I agree, the automatic machines aren't necessarily bad, but it's also not a better experience than my twin tub so the exchange of time isn't worth it. What brand machine do you have?

    I bought a fully automatic Magic Chef 1.6 washer recently and I love it. I throw my laundry in with a little detergent and it’s done anywhere between 15-44 minutes depending on my settings. I bought a plastic dolly from Harbor freight to move it from a storage closet to my kitchen sink. No more laundry mats for me. I also bought a 2.6cu ft Magic Chef dryer as well as a Panda Spin dryer. My clothes including heavy towels are dry in about 15 minutes.

      I have a basement laundry but I wash all of my shirts and blouses by hand so I bought the Panda spinner so I did not have to run to the basement every time a washed a few shirts just to spin them. I love the spinner. Clothes air dry so quickly. Sometimes I use it just to spin my really wet towels too. Nowthe basement dryer is about to go so I am considering options to be able to do laundry on my main floor instead. People that use the Panda spinner are saying it cuts down drying time by about half in the mini dryers. I wonder if these twin tub machines spin as well as the Panda.

    I use the dual tub in my bathtub... No spillage on the floor if I forget the water is running. It's light enough to move it into the bathroom quickly. The intake hose doesn't fit my faucet, so I use a hand-held shower to fill it.
    For the automatic machine, put it on a dolly: not only easier to move, but it also raises the washing machine, which allows it to drain more fully.

  • @gemkey10

    A lot of your cons are literally personal nitpicks that have nothing to do with how the machine operates. The portable washer works exactly the same as a regular washer that most people have in their home. The small amount of water stays in the machine to help keep the load balanced while in use. The agitation time might be shorter but the entire drum moves and rotates, unlike the manual machine, so the clothes are actually cleaned better and more gently in the automatic machine, hence your clothes not getting tangled. I agree about the water level, which is why I purchased the Giantex brand 10lb load machine; same machine, different name, 8 water levels vs 4 or 5 on the Panda branded machines. The Giantex branded machines fully cover the entire load on water level 7/8. I would say try your luck using with the Giantex machine before chalking the automatic portables. The model # is EP23113. Oh and using a dolly will make the machine easily maneuverable as well as allow airflow under the machine.

      I wholeheartedly disagree with you OP. I spent more time researching these than I should have and found it to be true that the automatic Panda or similar washers (such as Comfee) are weak and hold very little. Nearly all, unless they are a mini, twin tub washers hold more and agitate better. The newest of the twin tub washers have a 20 pound capacity in the wash tub and 6 pounds in the spinner. They’re expensive though, about $259 on Amazon. I bought the newest Costway twin tub with drain pump and am extremely happy with it. I will say that you have to actually enjoy laundry to enjoy a twin tub, which I do. Twin tub vs automatic can be summed up in how much control the individual wants over their wash. And for me, I want all the control.

    VERY helpful to anyone thinking of upgrading. The agitation wouldn't bother me, but the lack of power to spin dry efficiently would, as would not being able to drain it thoroughly after use, and having to babysit it in order to get the appropriately high level of water in each cycle. I'd thought the drum was bigger, so I'm surprised to learn it's not. I've moved so now have a regular washer and dryer, but when I lived where there wasn't either, the twin tub washer/spinner was a lifesaver.

      I was temporarily blinded by the convenience potential of the automatic machine but I think the twin-tub manual machines might actually work better for a lot of people, especially if you wash larger loads, so I'm glad this was helpful for you to compare the two! I had the twin tub and it was a pain I had to be there to monitor and switch it to spin (1 load = 2-3 spin loads) which made it too time consuming so I avoided Laundry lol but I got the portable magic chef 1.6 and it does clean really well so far better than my full size machine and not as damaging as the twin tub. Also I love that I can buy the casters so I can roll it around and store it away when I’m not washing. Just for ppl who are wondering so far I have washed in one load 1 queen fitted, 1 queen mattress protector, 2 king pillow covers, and 1 standard pillow cover with no issue

  • @lorimav
    @lorimav 2 роки тому +12

    This was helpful. I appreciate you really doing a comprehensive analysis. I briefly tried a Magic Chef .9 cu ft and it washed so little I thought I might as well just wash by hand. I took it back and got a Panda Spinner to spin my hand washables. As I am getting older I want to convert from doing my laundry in the basement to doing most of it on the main floor. Having to hire plumbers, electricians, etc. for hook ups plus the cost of a regular stacking unit besides is not in the budget. I think a twin tub washer in the bathroom might have large enough capacity and I can air dry and/or use a 110 volt mini dryer. I was also considering trying a 2 cu ft Magic Chef but I think you convinced me to try a twin tub first. You can wash as short or long as you like, you can do as many rinses as you like. You can also spin longer if you want to compared to a fully automatic. Running a "spin only" cycle in a fully automatic often results in the machine spraying water on the clothes at the beginning of the spin cycle and defeats the purpose of more spin time.

      Sorry for the delayed response, thanks for watching! I'm glad the video was helpful.
      Yes, a portable washing machine would be such a great alternative for moving your laundry room to your main floor. I'm in a decorating group on Facebook and someone posted a picture of a huge walk-in closet with the washer/dryer in a slide-out compartment IN the closet... I swoon. I'd be so lazy hanging up clothes with that setup but it would be so easy LOL Depending on your space, you might definitely be able to get away with air drying and forgoing the second dryer - I'd purchase the washing machine first and try it out for a while to see if you need the dryer. And if you hate the whole setup, these machines sell pretty easily on FB marketplace!

I saw a couple of reviews where people who live full time in an RV, they never mentioned any water spillage. The lady says she loves her machine and it has been a life saver for them. I noticed very few vendors mention the RPM Motor stats, and I only saw one that said wheels were included. Thanks again ! 🤗

      I will say most of the instances where water ended up on the floor in my case were user error 🥴 I either forgot to turn the water off from the sink or I ran hot water through the machine which causes temporary leaking when the plastic pipes expand (but left no permanent damage, at least on my machine).
      Best of luck as you continue your research! These really are life changing machines if you don't have easy access to a laundromat.

    Great Review. I just bought the Black & Decker .9cubic portable washer & you are on point when it comes to these new automatic washers. I DON'T like that it doesn't pull in enough water nor does it agitate the way I would like. I'm now considering buying a manual twin washer which appears to hold more clothing in the washer & agitates better.
    If possible will you share the brand of your twin washer.
    Thank You for this video.

    After watching the lack of agitation and length of time to get clothes clean with your new model. Decided to go with the older twin tub model like you are using. I am an old lady and these young engineers designing the washers don't understand it takes soap, water and agitation to get clothes clean. Even the fullsize HE models are awful. Before downsiizing bought a fancy new $1400.00 frontloader and within a month had a plumber put in an extra hook up next to the fancy expensive thing, and put an old fashsioned $250.00 toploader next to it so could get the farm dirt off my clothes. and used the fancy frontloader just for comforters. So when you do move on to a bigger home, you may be disappointed when you give up your twin tub. Your review was so helpful in making a decision on which washer to purchase.

      I honestly could not imagine putting a pair of farm-worn dungarees into one of these automatic washing machines! I feel like they'd come out as dirty as they went in. When I wash my hiking clothes in my twin tub I get a lot of satisfaction at how grimy the water gets and the literal layer of dirt I have to rinse out of the bottom of the machine before I can do the rinse cycle. Definitely a fan of the agitation power.

      Another thing that they don't understand is that it is often women doing the laundry and the average woman before she starts to shrink is about 5'5''. I have already shrunk to 5'4" from 5'6" and I need to use a stool or a reacher grabber device to get the clothes at the bottom of the new top loading washers without agitators (my mother owns one.) When my top loader finally went I bought the cheapest washer with an agitator despite the salesman trying to dissuade me and telling me pretty soon they will be out moded. I am an old lady too and tired of lugging heavy laundry back and forth up the basement stairs so I might just try one of these twin tub washers and use it in the bathroom.

      No, it isn't recommended to use hot water in these machines. I mentioned this in my first review video, I think it has to do with the fact that all the hoses in the machine are plastic and they expand (and leak) when hot water is running through. Both times I've accidentally used hot water in the machine and had that issue, it was completely resolved when the machine cooled down.

    I too purchased an automatic machine. I purchased a dolly to move it around. I still have my Della twin tub and since its not sold anymore and it wasn't cheap I don't want to part with it. The automatic is Insignia and is quite large at 1.6. I hang dry so I've never done sheets yet, but have no doubt my machine would handle a set. On my machine there's a cap at the bottom I'm supposed to release every so often and water comes out. It sounds like you are firm in your decision, but a dolly would certainly solve the moving issue. The amount the machine holds I've seen many portables that do not fill to the rim. I'll just do more loads...lol. For being stealth in my apartment I wished I'd gotten a smaller washer as this 1.6 is a bit large. In any event, its here to stay.

      I have a portable dryer which works great (several options are linked in the description) and my clothes come out soft and fully dry. I had the washing machine for a week before I purchased the dryer just to test it out and I was able to spin out the excess water to get my clothes dry enough that they could air dry, but I don't remember if they dried crunchy. I don't usually use fabric softener when I'm doing the laundry, so maybe try out a few washes with a good quality fabric softener and see how that works? I'm also reading on Google that using less detergent and a quarter cup white vinegar helps reduce stiffness when air drying clothes as well.

    Ha! Ain’t nothing wrong with having 2 machines if you got the room for it and can use them both at the same time. Like for example your automatic you can use at the kitchen sink and the other twin tub at the bathroom sink or the bathtub. That’s pretty cool! I gotta Costway twin tub and love it. One thing about the twin tubs is that they last a long time. Especially the gravity drain models. I put mine in the bathtub and use a rinseroo shower hose to fill the tub and rinse during the spin cycle.
    And I was thinking about getting a 2nd twin tub with a drain pump that I can keep on the floor at the bathroom sink and totally run it from there. And can still use the other gravity drain one in the bathtub at the same time. I can do that for sure.

A regular washing machine will have the spin power to get out the excess water for line drying. If you wanted to go with a portable washing machine, based on my experiences, I would still recommend the dual basin machine because you can wash larger loads and spin out more water in the dedicated spinner to give yourself a good head start for line drying. Hope that helps!!!!

    I just upgraded to the fully automatic and I'm so happy. I'm going to get a dolly so I can push it around. The loads are smaller but my other naive was so much work is always out it off and it would take over an hour to wash alot is that fine I'm right there doing physical work adding water, draining, switching to the spinner etc. I hated it.

    • @mikimishisa
      @mikimishisa Рік тому +1

      Because you then have to put it back in to rinse then spin and if the spin side is smaller you have to do more cycles to spin all the clothes.

    I am like you..I need to see the clothes agitating, add or remove water the moment I want, add detergent, controlling everything myself....the new machine is not the problem, we like the old ones..that's all.. Is like new cars, I prefer the strong comfortable classics 🤣🤣🤣 now I want a new portable washing machine..need to choose between gravity or built-in pump..people say gravity is better, I don't know.

    • @TaliaWarrenDesign
      @TaliaWarrenDesign  2 роки тому +1

      That's exactly it - there's nothing wrong with the new machine, I'm just so set in my ways! If it ain't broke...
      As for gravity vs. built-in pump, I'd assume the built-in pump would work better for most indoor use? That way you could have the hose draining anywhere and still get the water out of the machine. When I buy my RV, I'm going to get a countertop washing machine (most of which have a gravity dump) because I'll be able to lift the machine easily and let gravity do the work, but for my apartment, I think it definitely helps to have a motor working to get water from the bottom of the machine, up the hose and into the sink.

    • @TaliaWarrenDesign

      Hi Sheri, I'd still have to slide the machine sideways to get it to clear the refrigerator so the small wheels on the back would still be a problem.... Also the back of the machine wasn't nice to look at.

      I'm definitely tired of the extra work too LOL but I suppose I just got used to it. I usually water my plants when I do laundry so I'm hauling plants back and forth to the bathroom, moving clothes in and out of the washing machine, between the tubs, into the dryer.. It's inconvenient, but I'm used to it? Same as the washing machine sound... It's been so long I barely hear it in the background.
      If it ain't broke don't fix it, I guess?

    I wanna get some sort of portable machine because the current solution doesn't work long term. I'm just worried about water drainage. Surely there's a way around this.

    • @TaliaWarrenDesign
      @TaliaWarrenDesign  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, sorry for the late response!
      My machine's motor is powerful enough to push a good amount of water against gravity and up the hose that I've attached to my sink. I do have a pan that I put on the floor to put the hose in to get extra water out without fighting against gravity (check out my other video on the channel where I do a long-term review of the dual basin machine).
      I know some people put their machines in the tub/shower so the water can drain right out the side. Depending on the model you get you can also lift the machine up and let the water drain out the hose into a pan or into your shower/tub working with gravity.
      In my other video I talk about my issues with fungus gnats and my fear of pooling water so drainage is definitely a concern for me. I haven't had an issue in years since using a pan to drain extra water between uses. Hope that helps- I guarantee a portable washing machine in your house is worth it!

      @@TaliaWarrenDesign Oh I know it's worth it. Used to have one forever ago when they were just starting to get known but sold it because the new place had one. But I'm thinking of getting the complete set so I can just always be good on laundry. I'm tired of only doing laundry when I can afford it.
      How wobbly would you say your machines are? I got them saved and will be getting the same. I was thinking about, because I'm tall, putting them on a pedestal so everything's at the level I need, but I'm worried they will wobble off because of the spins. Do you notice a lot of wobble when it's running?

    Double spin heavy items, saves electricity use for heating dryer. You need a bigger automatic unit. Bathroom is another hook up point. Sink fill n shower drain.

      Because I don't like the look of a dolly in my kitchen and the machine wouldn't have fit in that corner on top of one.

    Interesting take. I realize this is an older video, but you are certainly one of the only people I've seen who would prefer a manual washer over an automatic.
    I feel you're misinterpreting the short spin cycles on the automatic washing machine. The entire drum spins in conjunction with the spinning of the clothes. It acts as a washboard, to clean the clothes. The longer cycles are not necessary due to the entire drum spinning.
    As for the amount of water used in the automatic, I fully agree. Even my full size automatic washing machine lacks in that department. I understand it's trying to use the least amount of water possible, but it's just not enough.
    Anyway, loved the video. It's always nice to see other people's points of view. Thanks for sharing!

    for comparing drum size, looks like you got a smaller drum size on the new machine, like a .9 cubic feet or 1.3 cubic feet, you can get larger ones, I have a 2.0 drum size and it holds a great amount. There are even 3.0 cubic feet portable washers (Black&Decker)
    also you should consider getting a washer dolly for your washer so it's super easy to roll around, those little wheels that it comes with are so hard to use

  • @olg06

    I have the manual one. I have to say with the manual one it takes longer + you get your hands weter also you hunj over a lot more since it sits very low so if you have lower back problems that's going to suck. Just something more to consider if you are going to buy one over the other one.
