Not to be shallow, definitely the best lens reviewer on youtube. Short, informative, and easy to understand videos. Covers all the important and relevant aspects. Chris is the type of reviewer who knows how to package a video well, and respects the viewer's time.
Fuji has been knocking out of the park with their prime lenses XF 56mm 1.2, 33mm 1.4, and 18mm 1.4 - all of them are out-of-this-earth lenses for their sharpness.
I rarely comment on videos, but I have to say, you are most definitely my favorite lens reviewer on UA-cam. Every time I'm interested in a new lens, I immediately look for your signature thumbnails to click on. Thank you for all your hard work and effort putting these videos together. It is very appreciated.
Since I'm just about to part with a grand for the Fuji 56mm, to use primarily for photographing artwork for reproduction, giving it the sharpness award makes me very happy
The award for my favourite lens reviewer on UA-cam goes to Christopher Frost! Thanks for your incredible work and great reviews, I always come to you for information that I can trust when it comes to lenses.
Wow, what a fantastic summary!! I've been looking forward to this video and was not disappointed. Thank you for your continued time and effort Christopher.
Thank you, for being such a great source for camera lens reviews! You do them in a way where I actually know what I'm getting, and not just buzz words. So, thank you so much for everything you do and keep up the amazing work!
Wow, what great (and fun) group of lenses! I'm really impressed that the Fuji lens was sharper than the Sigma 65 F2. I didn't think that would be possible. I wonder what will come next. As always, thank you very much for all your hard work Christopher!
Go Nikon! Just bought a Z5 with the 24-120 and loving the combo! Both were on sale so the combo was $1899 US. So versatile, lite, and gorgeous colors and sharpness.
Great stuff, very competent and funny, too. Kind regards from Germany and a merry christmas and a happy new year for you and your family, Martin ( hope all things will turn much better next year - but your videos, I think you can‘t get any better - thank you very much for your work!)
I wound up with Samyang's 135mm f/1.8 FE as a Black Friday purchase for $660 and can happily say there's not a lick of buyer's remorse. Your review of the Nikon 24-120 was what a friend of mine needed to see to convince her to abandon her old D5600 and go full-frame mirrorless. Our wallets may not appreciate you, but our minds certainly do. Thanks Chris!
And what was wrong with her D5600??? 24 megapixel sensor from 2016 is pretty much identical to performance of majority of APS-C cameras today and does she even print larger than A1??? No? Then you wont even need more than 20 megapixels let alone 24 Good images are not because of camera, but because of the user behind it.
That Z 24-120 f4 is out of this world, and just trounces the competition at or anywhere near its formulation. It even matches or exceeds the sharpness of certain trinity f2.8's from certain manufacturers who shall remain nameless. Best wide to tele zoom is a justified award on that lens.
Great vid again! I absolutely share your both Nikon choices (me as a Canon shooter) Looking forward to some more special vintage reviews (me started this year sprinkling a shooting on vintage glas from time to time)
Best value for money should have gone to the Samyang AF 24mm f1.8 FE...It's just as sharp as the Sony FE 24mm f1.4 GM, right across the frame, but it has less CA and coma at the edges of frame, and better flare resistance too, plus it's almost half the weight and yet amazingly, it's only 1/3rd the price!!! Literally the bargain of the year! I also bought the Samyang AF 135mm f1.8 FE, based partly on Chris's review, and he wasn't wrong...I would go as far to say it's the best 135mm f1.8 lens ever made...Making the Sony GM version look like hyper expensive junk.
I definitely agree on the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 as great value for money - using it for astrophotography is wonderful, and it gets fantastic images in pretty much every other situation as well. My only real gripe is that I don't have the lens station, so I have to buy or rent one - and I'd rather rent if I can help it, since it's my only Samyang lens right now and I'd rather not contribute to E-waste. I've also had my eye on the Laowa macro, even though the focal length of the Samyang and the Laowa are reasonably close the 2x macro is super tempting, especially since my current macro lens is a vintage lens on extension tubes. Probably going to need a graphics card upgrade for my PC first though...
@0:21 i'll start it off 😂...i'm Thomas in Boston lol....i do model photography as a hobby and collect high end lenses so your reviews of what i have already have been very reassuring 😄...just one of 300k grateful subscribers 😎👍🏻
is the nikon 24-120 f/4 sharper than the tamron 35-150 at f/4? Would really be interested in a comparison of that sort (with the Tamron adapted for Nikon with a ETZ21 adapter or something similar). Thanks in advance and keep up the great reviews!
Lovely summary of your lenses reviewed. My friend got the Nikon 24 120 f4 recently and it's a revelation! I haven't touched any others on your list, but that Fuji looks tempting...
The 33 is apparently not as god-tier or fallen-off-the-spaceship-tier according to some. The Nikon Z 50 f1.8 is sharper than the 33 in the corners. Maybe I should just sell a kidney for the new 56.
@@professionalpotato4764"Z 50 f1.8 is sharper than the 33 in the corners." That is not true! Just comparing the reviews of those lenses on this channel. The Z 50mm 1,8 and the XF33mm 1,4 showing about the exact same sharpness performance in the corners. But i prefer the more compact size and premium feeling of the Fuji.
@@muttishelfer9122 Just quoting what others said. I remember someone somewhere compared the Z 50mm to the 33mm and claimed better corner resolution. I personally haven't tried the Z system so I don't know what to draw from this. Could be sample variance. Could be actual lack of resolution. But here in this video, it performs worse than a f/2.8 zoom lens from Tamron in the edge. Centre sharpness seems better though. ua-cam.com/video/hqM7dfd-x1Y/v-deo.html
Wonderful video, as always! Nikon has an incredible lineup of zoom lenses for the Z mount, I own a 24-70 f4 and it's a stunning piece of equipment! No wonder the new zooms are among the best ones available! 🙂
Who are your listenners? Well, I am a Canadian actuary, passionate about photography and your reviews are pretty damn good sir, that's why I check your stuff and stay tuned-in. Hi from Montreal!
How about the East German Zeiss 135mm 3.5. They churned them out . I bought a brand new one from Jessops in 1980 for £18. Brilliant colour and contrast as it only has 4 multicoated elements. (£90 in todays prices)
Who are you people? I am those people :) Btw, great channel! Love your reviews, very sharp, a bit soft toward the edges but it sharpens nicely at minute 4, getting a bit soft again at around minute 16 due to the effects of 2022's attention diffraction, but overall, just great! and your accent is the equivalent of the nicest bokeh produced in the English speaking world :)
Although Nikon gets dragged in the camera community often, I do give them credit that although they don't open their mount up to 3rd parties, they have been putting out a number of good budget friendly full frame lenses for Z mount. Canon could use to take notes from them when it comes to RF mount. Great video as always!
They have opened their Z mount to a select few companies! That’s why Viltrox and Voightlander lenses are fully compatible. Tamron just have one to date with Sigma and possibly Zeiss about to join the party next year.
I have been watching many of your videos - and you have never tested a 300mm f/2.8! They are actually very hard to buy new any more. Most are discontinued, but it would be great to see a proper lens test of the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II. Also: the Nikkor AF-S 200mm f/2G ED & 300mm f/2.8 would be interesting. Perhaps a battle of the 300s?
What portrait lens do you recommend for my Canon 90D (32.5mp)? I want the sharpest possible lens with a fast apperture on an 85 or maybe 135mm lens. I've seen your reviews of the Samyang 85mm f/1.2, the Samyang 135mm f/2, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art and the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art. What kind of black magic is Fuji producing... Between the 18mm and the 56mm I think they have some sort of nexus of wonder that mere mortals should not possess the keys to.
It's pretty insane right? When companies started announcing 40MP cameras I thought... good luck making affordable lenses that can resolve such a pixel density - especially on cropped sensors where you need even more accuracy per pixel. I know we keep saying to ourselves that we don't need more resolution or more MP, but 40 to me seems about as much as I'd ever need and I'm glad these lenses can handle it. They should be keepers for a decade (and beyond).
can you please make a top all lens you have reviewed, maybe by category, and every year you update the ranking. what lens makes to the list, what left...
There is no rf lens on these awards, and as a user of the canon system, I feel that it is somewhat satisfying. Canon is against their customers, and that's something we could see when any rf lens was capable of winning any category. I love canon but it's a sentimental thing, not a performance thing, maybe I'll buy an r7 body but I'll seriously consider it. Equipment doesn't make the film or the pic, but influences a lot. Thanks Christopher, absolutely great job.
When I compared the 40 Mpx apsc fuji vs the 24 Mpx full-frame Nikon Z6 II on the DP Review comparison tool, I see the Nikon is sharper in my opinion even at 100 ISO, at higher ISOs is a lot better but that's expected. So, not sure if it's down to the lenses used for the comparison or to the actual resolving power of the full frame over the apsc sensor
For me what to say other than thank you for your "fine English reviews" as here, commenting from Quetta Pakistan, it is still usually said about any fine work. As common people say "what an English work has been done on it."
For next year... how about reviewing lenses of a particular make? e.g. start with Olympus, I think they have a lot of underrated lenses which produce beautiful images. I recently got an Olympus OM-4 Ti to try the lenses that I already had in its native system... but this was only after I tried them on my Sony cameras with an adapter. Then you can move another year into another classic system and so on...
Christopher, if you can choose only one lens for the Canon R7, which one will it be? I saw your review on the Sigma 18-35mm, which was my choice, but I decided not to buy it after I heard your comments. Alternatively I thought of the Sigma 50-100mm, but it is probably the same story, being a very similar lens. Your input would be very much appreciated.
Do you have a kind of perpetual top list/hall of fame anywhere, coming to think of it? Tyll from Innerfidelity used to keep a list of top X recommendations at every price category for headphones, and I think something like that would be quite cool to see from your beyond-extensive review catalogue. Maybe a top 3 or best & honourable mention for each sensor format / price bracket combination to help those undecided on which system will cater best to their specific shooting needs? Also I can't wait to hopefully see Samyang, Sigma & Tamron offerings for Nikon Z mount, now that they're open to collaborating with third parties. My Z6 is such a great camera, but I am a little jealous of Sony users for the value & compact lens options on the market. That 135 1.8 is seriously calling me..
I guess there could be more relevant modern lenses in awards than ancient FD Minolta or Barbie. I am glad Samyang 135mm F1.8 won one award, that lens is something else. Canon 100-400rf is very capable of resolving too.
