A great video. Let me just say to anyone who's thinking about doing this yourself be prepared to spend twice of mount of time that you planned on. When we bought our first boat the dealership talked us into buying a used one that they had taken in on a trade in. They showed us binders full of receipts and repair bills and talked about how meticulous the previous owner was. They had suggested us to buy this one to see if we like the boating life before spending a lot more money on something new. At that time the only known issue was the radio did not work. We were fine with that I have experience and working on car electronics and wiring. After buying the boat we were only able to take it out twice before it was time to winterize. I decided during that time to fix a few things including the radio. Once I remove the panel for the radio that's where I questioned everything the dealer had told us. The person who messed with the radio or changed it out completely did not use not a single connector and not a single piece of electric tape. They use the old brown painters tape that were completely dry rotted and brittle. After I saw all of that I decided to rip out every wire on the boat and start from the beginning. I really thought I could knock this out in two weekends but the deeper I got the more issues came up. Once I was done I started replacing all of the bilge pumps and all of the lights. The one thing I can tell anybody who buys a used boat is to physically check the bilge pumps! Just because it makes noise does not mean it works! Out of six build pumps that all made noises none of them could pump water out of a bucket. The easiest way to find out if your pumps are working is to put your drain plug in and fill your build with water and try to pump it out. And have someone on the outside mark the holes that the water is coming out of. Each bilge pump has its own separate way out of the boat. Sorry for the lengthy comment but this is something I'm passionate about. I've been on the water with my wife and children and we have had to deal with a engine fire caused by bad wiring. we were very fortunate that we did not lose our boat or life. Again great video I enjoyed the series.
Yes ive had the same experience. Oh its just this, just that, then once i took apart the panels to inspect it was a ratsnest with exposed wiring, wonky splices and no labelling at all. Really really frustrating when trying to sort other peoples wiring jobs.

My budget is small too.. average guy. I upgraded my gps recently with the simrad go 12xse it was under 2500$ and came with the 3in 1 dransducer. Can add radar later once I save some more coin. Gps units are super expensive so it can hurt you're pockets quickly but it's like buying a boat somtimes you'll wish u would've went a little bigger to start instead of cheaping out. Another great video! I spent some time reading the comments, and your reply's. It takes a lot of time for you to answer all the people who leave comments, and that will be very difficult to do as your channel grows; and it WILL grow!... In the mean time, thank you for your videos and all the knowledge you are sharing with all of us..... You won't remember this, but last year I had posted a video on my channel that showed the lower-unit oil in my Yamaha 300 with a lot of water in it. You walked me through the process, and I want to let you know, after following your advice, the issue is fixed. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you! Yes, it is very time consuming but it helps to push that growth :) Eventually there will come a time where I won't be able to, but for now it's worth it :) You are very welcome and I do remember that! That's awesome, I'm glad that you got it sealed up :) it's nice to have some peace of mind lol
I’m just under 200 with new nav light bow and stern fuse panel 6gang switch panel haven’t got wire yet as my buddy said to bring it up to the shops and bye him a case of beer and I can use what I need fore wire and connections from the shop
If you're going to cheap out with automotive wiring or something off a spool at Home Depot - don't bother. Marine grade wire lasts considerably longer and performs better. In fact, I use Marine Wire in my race cars and so do other racers.
Just bought my first boat. Love the channel. Buy what should I do when my engine doesn't start in the middle of the Chesepeak Bay. I know it's going to happen 😂
One thing most people under estimate is the all in cost for a real transducer, installed correctly that works at speed and positioned to not get ripped off by your trailer.
My head hurts that's about 2 days measuring & 3 days looking at catalogue 1/2 day placing the order, 1/2 day prep for the next video, guess what its tueday again. Wow key is lots of caffeine, I guess but great pracitical video.😉👍👍
Love the vids but seriously, at 8:15mark I enjoyed your comment about "were not fancy and we cant afford to act like we are" Classic sir and keep the great vids coming. Im about to rewire my boat and this helped alot.
Awesome! Thank you! Will do, it took more time on the production but working out the schedule and getting things into a system so hopefully will be able to be more in that 12-15 min range :) I've discovered that after 10 min my computer starts to struggle so now the boat isn't the only hole in the water lol
I would love to work with you for a week. No money. The knowledge I would learn is payment enough. I’m a prier master tech in auto. Just moved to boats last year. Thought it would be a cake walk. So much to learn. So much is the same, but worlds apart.
Awesome content! I just found your channel yesterday and the timing couldn't be better. I need to pull the tank and recore the deck on my 1987 Outrage. I really hope you put out a nice long video when the upcoming rewire project happens. I could use all the help I could get in that area!
I really depends on the size of the boat and how many things you are trying to power up. I only spent $150+ on a 1986 Alumacraft 18’ bass boat. That included the new switches.
Thank you! Nice, oh to be able to do wiring on a pontoon again lol down here they are almost non-existent :( super easy when it comes to the wiring though! For sure, it won't be for a month or too, but working on it as time permits lol I've got another boat that I was hoping to get to work on this month and finally get it gone. Right now we have three and I need to finish one and sell it to be able to keep up on the purchases of stuff for this one :) So there might be a break coming up on the Ocean Master, maybe a week or two, we'll see, there will still be a video though!
If you are going with SIMRAD, check out the GO series, very similar to the NSS, but a lot cheaper if you are just running a single unit. It loses some features, but for me, it wasn't enough to justify the price hike. I got my GO7 with the 3-in-one ducer for under 600 when they ran a promo at a local marine supplier (Defender Marine).
Just to be Capt. Obvious...I bought a great 2006 G3 last year. Had the electronics installed by a dealer I trust. The only thing I wish had been done is LABELING the wires. Just makes trouble shooting that much easier...I should have done it, should have asked, but didn't. I've hade boats for over 40 years, and wiring is the biggest pain: boat or trailer.
The cost of a serious failure is the boat, the next boat, and maybe the whole marina - and you with it. Do it right or take up golf. Imagine yourself huddled in the bow in a burning boat, at sea, in rough, cold water conditions if the wrong thing happens at the wrong time. Good wiring is your route back home. Listen to these guys, folks. Still boating after all these years of messing with older boats : ) Fry fish not wiring !
Holy hell, I knew marine elec was more expensive than auto elec(what I'm very used to) but $8700... that's $8450 more than I paid for my 17ft hemi 6 powered boat.
I’m looking forward to the rest of this series I’m also a marine tech and it’s interesting to see how other ppl do the work. What’s your favorite brand of electronics?
Awesome! Thank you! I agree with you completely :) Um right now I do really like Simrad, but I think they have to figure out a better way of processing and implementing all of the updates to all of their machines. Seems like once a month they need an update and it's this whole deal with downloading and uploading it off a card, seems to be more work and hassle than it needs to be. Saving waypoints and tracks and reuploading stuff, seems to be too much. But I'd go with Simrad right now. Garmin might still have them beat on some stuff but that's just because of the updating :)
Wow how much just to go over the wire and repair bilge pump live bait tank in and out and live well in and out also I had to put a horn switch separate from my ignition switch for auto choke on my 1999 Johnson 250 out board . My boat is a 1999 aqua sport 22.5 explorer. Any suggestions please help
How about replacing some of the stringers and cross member. Noticed they had rotted away near the stern. Perhaps that was addressed in another video. Was also wondering about the integrity of the transom. Judging from the high bilge water stain appears water has sat for a long while, thus damaging the fiberglass laminated wood. Please comment! Have enjoyed all of your videos. Very informative!
Sir. Born again Boating can you please, please, please make a video of the process of the rewiring and fuses, bus bars, switch panels and all the electronics in detail? How i do it when i get all my materials i already stripped the boat and i can bet you will get a ton of views on that one
@Born Again Boating love your videos man... i think I crushed every single video you posted the past couple weeks. Purchased a used boat a few months ago and it's in desperate need or rewiring... it's a jumbled mess and half the stuff in the switch panel doesn't work. Got my list ready to go and bout to order. Any update on the actual rewiring video? :)
Look I know this is an older video, and you may have already done a video on it. But what is the difference in a thru hull transducer and a transom mount transducer. That would be a great video to do.
Never be a freed to use heat shrink over the shrinkable butt spices and don't forget the ground connections, saltwater love's the ground more than positive.
Hi, don't know if you will see this, but I might as well ask and see if I you have a video for it. My boat is from 1991. My starter on my 96 115 Merc works and the motor starts up no problem. This issue is the dash, I have no power getting to it anymore when it was working fine all season. I assume it's a fuse. (but maybe not)... There in lies my problem. I can't find the fuse if there is one. Do you have any videos on how to test for continuity? Love the channel, especially when working on the older two strokes. All the best, Keith
You aren't kidding lol I have a lot of parts and other stuff, plus a discount so it isn't that expensive but I wanted to make it applicable to everybody in a wider range of boats so that it isn't too exact :)
😅okay I’m not feeling good about that cost I’m having to upgrade my older boat wires and electrical stuff so I’m freaking out 😮it’s going to take me a year to get everything done
For the electronics why don't you get a Simrad G09 XSE. It comes with a total scan transducer. Right now westmarine has them for $1100 but the put them on sale every 3 month for $850. I got mine there and does everything I need. There is not much of a difference between the GO and the NSS
That's true, they are super nice, for me though, and this is totally preferential to me. But I like having the buttons and the knobs :) I work on these things every day and also when I get a chance to go out and fish, it's usually really rough out. So I see that the touchscreens like eventually fail and not respond so having the buttons as a back up is super nice. Not to mention when you're out there and it's really rolling, it's easier to use the knobs and buttons instead of touching the screen when you're bouncing around everywhere. Plus I fish with a lot of old timers and they can't see anyway lol but that is just my reasoning for choosing that one. I haven't gotten much experience with the new GO's so I could be completely wrong. I remember when the Mercury Vessel Views started being manufactured by Simrad and the touch screen would have tons of problems after a couple years. ( We see hundreds of them so we get to see all the defects over a huge quantity of them) but they could be completely different now. I was looking at that when putting this together, if it wasn't for the button thing I would have been all over those lol How do you like yours?
@@BornAgainBoating I agree with with you 100%. The nss is better and I love the knobs but I just couldn't spend that kind of money. $850 was a great deal for me. So far no problems with the unit. One big difference is that with the touchscreen I noticed the NSS responds faster than the GO. By the way if after this massive build you still got extra cash laying around check out CMOR cards for your nss, they are insane. Thanks a lot for the videos if have used a lot of your videos to guide myself through all the work I have done in my boat
@@BornAgainBoating also I am think about repowering with a new 300 Suzuki 4 stroke. Can you share your thoughts on this motors or make a video of which outboards last longer with proper maintenance. Or which one you prefer out of the 4 stroke. Thanks
I totally understand man, who knows if we'll actually end up putting that in. Most of the time we end up putting in used GPS's and whatever we can find on Yard sale lol I just looked at those CMOR cards and they look awesome! Thanks for the heads up! That's awesome on the repower, I don't have anything against the Suzukis. Shoot right now you have trouble getting Mercury or Yamaha's so Suzuki's are next in line! I think we just back an update and you can't get a Mercury V-6 or V-8 for a repower for up to 20 months! I know Yamaha's are available sooner than that but with proper maintenance they are all pretty good engines. I would say to look into your local dealers though, when buying a new engine you want to have a good relationship with the people that will do the warranty work in case anything pops up.
Im about to add a Simrad 4g radar to my boat and want to run new wires to bus bar that its going to connect to. What gauge wire do you recommend, 14 gauge ? Thank you and love the channel.
Im a commercial electrician but i have never worked on a before, but if you understand electricity you understand electricity. A friend called me and said she was watching TV on her boat for about an hour then all the power shut off and the individual breakers started reading reverse polarity. this should be impossible considering no work has been done. The main breaker has 120V to ground and is not reversed when i checked. I can see the hot coming off the main output into the input of the other breakers but i ran out of time and didnt check the reading, but im pretty sure its correct. What would be the next thing you would check? Im assuming its a equipment problem somewhere not a wiring problem
How did we go from transom replacement to estimating wire useage my boat needs transom updating is this video a I'm waiting for video b hope it next if not tell everyone that you are in middle of transom replacement they have to wait their turn a month down the road JT
Hahah sorry bro, no we are still on the transom but I'm working on getting all of the material and doing the work to get the footage to make the video. I've had some things come up that have taken over a couple Saturdays so it put me back a couple weeks :( It's the age old problem of having too much work to do and not enough time to get it all done! Don't worry, next week will be a transom video, but then their might be another video after that, and I'll be taking 2 days off work to do the actual glass work. I'm working on possibly putting it all into 1-2 videos when it comes to the actual glass work. But a longer video takes a lot longer to edit and make and I don't want to just not put out a video :( You should come on down and get some hands on experience ;)
Born Again Boating thanks for the invite. But I'm couple of surgeries short of be able to do anything. I've got some glass experience over my old ass yrs. Between you and Andy from boat works today I should be able to do it I have a splitter for two different vhf radios. One radio is hooked to my lowrance gps just for emergency gps coordinates still watched your vid thank goodness I don't need to do that stuffi got other things to do JT
For sure! Hope the surgeries go well :) I think you will be fine on the glass work! Those splitters are a real saver sometimes, and that's nice to have a back up GPS link for emergencies :)
To save on the cost and it is over kill :) The engine doesn't need to have that much power fed to it. The 0 or 00 is just a huge cable and a lot more expensive without any real reason for it :)
I understand costing issue but at 11.00 @ ft with lugs on the ends your not really killing a budget. Besides your normal marine cranking battery puts out 500 CCA. Thus even a
Sorry fat finger...Thus even a “00” handles 350 amps whereas the “0” handles 280 amps. You want all the amps to go to the starter especially when it’s a cold engine in a cold ambient atmosphere. Anything less you would be overheating the cable. I’ll still politely disagree, but keep up the good work.
Galileo Galilee I always go big on ground to block and to the starter. Depending on battery size and distance between engine and battery, you may not even be required to install a battery disconnect for the starter circuit.
Yeah, that's quite the holder's they had in there huh lol no worries, we'll just be fixing that one access panel and we're working on the material right now. Coosa is super expensive but I know everybody wants to see it. So, we are working on seeing if we can make that happen for you guys ;)
Very awesome video. I have a good question does the hourly rate you charge change from job to job. Cuss i know somethings are a pain in the ass and the reason why they took you the boat to begin with hahaha.
Lol no generally not. But sometimes, because it is dealing with a boat here, certain jobs are actually given labor breaks because of certain circumstances. Generally though, hourly is hourly. A lot of electronics and boat wiring companies though will bid it out by the job. So lets say you wanted to do a job like this with replacing everything. They would bid it more on a 2-3 week time frame and with a flat cost. Like 25K or whatever the situation is. Then because of the discounts they get on the parts, it works out fairly.
@@BornAgainBoating very cool. Them dam electric gremlins always have fun with me. You can always granite with a saltwater boat your electrical is not going to work if you have not used it for several trips. Especially since you have not fixed it. Hahaha
Arron, what gauge wire did you run for the starting wire from the console to the stern of the boat. Was it 2 or 2/0 wire. I would like to relocate the batteries from the stern to the center console which is roughly 15'.
I only buy the stereo equipment from west marine! Because of the return policy and I've got a sweet Port Supply discount ;) I get my electronics from a local company :) I used west marine to be able to show the prices too :)
Lol thank you! I've been trying some new stuff with the videos and seeing how they come out. To be honest, I tried the like button thing last week and the likes doubled! Which really helps with the UA-cam Algorithm and them showing the video to more people! It's really helped with the subs too, we've been growing pretty well. I had to change up putting it in the video opposed to having an outro with all of that stuff in it, because then the view duration just dropped off and UA-cam would stop suggesting the videos. Just trying to make a better video for you all and to keep the channel growing. Any suggestions of thoughts are greatly appreciated :)
Great channel but it seems like in this video they’re justifying cost of an expensive estimate. You can buy all those parts from amazon & eBay for much less $$
Thats absolutely true, he could have saved 20-30% using other sources to get these products. I have my own Outboard Repair Business and I've tried that route. There is many reasons I buy from only one vendor now. You build a reputation, no warranty issues, you get a great product, no delays with shipping, you don't have to spend a couple extra hours finding all the stuff and ordering, and biggest for me, you don't have 1,000 cardboard boxes to crush from amazon. He's in business, and probably has a port supply discount with several companies, this estimate you are seeing is probably for any DYI people.
@Angelo C Thank you! Yes, that is true, you can get cheaper stuff, but for the sake of the video I was trying to keep it more general and mid range so that way it would be more applicable to a wider range of boaters. Seeing that everyone doesn't own the same size boat with the same size systems, lights, pumps, and other features. So, I figured if I just went in the mid range, not the cheapest, and not the most expensive, it would give a general number that would be more accurate for the average boater who would be thinking about taking their boat somewhere to do it. Or having a general number to go off of if they wanted to start tackling a project like this.
@Ravosa Marine Services Thank you! That's completely right! I also have 3 boats right now and most of this stuff is sitting in a cabinet ;) Plus Land n Sea cost and Port Supply like you said, you're absolutely right, I wanted to show the general DYI person a good reference point.
my God that boat looks weathered...is that all from the salt? Everything is covered and coated, even the radio...that must take a toll on everything and cost a fortune to replace...reducing life too?

when installing new or using old wiring clean all contact connections and add electrical grease to all connections.

This video was 3 years ago imagine how much it would be now insane
It’s cheaper now lol

West Marine, you know better... Wrong Place to Purchase. You Have a Purpose to Do it like this. Gotcha 👍👍👍
Almost forgot what day of the week it was! Technician’s Tuesday!!!
Hahha Comes up quick doesn't it!
This boat is going to be amazing when its done
A Fishing Machine :) Putting a platform bracket on there as well so it will be great when diving too!

Wow,,,that is big money for a simple setup.thats long term commitment too that boat for that type of investment. Your work looks flawless
thanks for stopping by!
My head hurts that's about 2 days measuring & 3 days looking at catalogue 1/2 day placing the order, 1/2 day prep for the next video, guess what its tueday again.
Wow key is lots of caffeine, I guess but great pracitical video.😉👍👍
Great video , this re wired cost more then my boat .
I'm so glad I found this channel. Keep it up dude
,IV been a auto tech for over 30 years so this is easy for me
Looking forward to see the actual wiring process! Very tedious and intimidating process. A wiring schematic of the layout would be very helpful 👍🏻
Awesome! I'll put some thought into and see if I can figure out how to lay it out as like a blueprint or something :) Thank you!
Love the vids but seriously, at 8:15mark I enjoyed your comment about "were not fancy and we cant afford to act like we are" Classic sir and keep the great vids coming. Im about to rewire my boat and this helped alot.
Thanks so much!
Great video and information Aaron! Also like the longer video! Lol. Keep it up brother!
Awesome! Thank you! Will do, it took more time on the production but working out the schedule and getting things into a system so hopefully will be able to be more in that 12-15 min range :) I've discovered that after 10 min my computer starts to struggle so now the boat isn't the only hole in the water lol
Thank you for the information, very interesting. Crazy how that 14/2 wire, same company, same #121550 is 3 times cheaper now in 2024.
I would love to work with you for a week. No money. The knowledge I would learn is payment enough. I’m a prier master tech in auto. Just moved to boats last year. Thought it would be a cake walk. So much to learn. So much is the same, but worlds apart.
Fyi, I work on high end surf boats, big sea rays, and a few “fishing boats”. And jet boats. Just got my “jet boat certification”. 🙄
You made a very informative video. Easy to follow along with. 👍
Awesome video ! Rebuilding a pontoon, so ur rewiring tutorials is going to come in handy..
That's a great price for one! I do think we want to go with Simrad for sure :)
All your wiring measurements need to be double. As per ABYC code. And use there scale for wire size.
Such a dope boat. Major boat envy here.
Also 2/0 is not enough for that run considering the total load and run needed
Nice breakdown, this is great information.
Wow. I like your videos. Good info. Keep up the good work
My recommendation wait until black Friday 😁
Lol not a bad idea ;)
Cyber Monday haha

Sir. Born again Boating can you please, please, please make a video of the process of the rewiring and fuses, bus bars, switch panels and all the electronics in detail? How i do it when i get all my materials i already stripped the boat and i can bet you will get a ton of views on that one

@@k3v1nbf you can go for it, it won't be until the end of June
@Born Again Boating love your videos man... i think I crushed every single video you posted the past couple weeks. Purchased a used boat a few months ago and it's in desperate need or rewiring... it's a jumbled mess and half the stuff in the switch panel doesn't work. Got my list ready to go and bout to order. Any update on the actual rewiring video? :)
Very detailed and to the point. Thanks
You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing this is awesome info
Thank you for commenting!
I don’t even own a boat but I sub’d just now… interesting
Wow!, now you know why I steal all my copper!
Even from churches?

Hi, don't know if you will see this, but I might as well ask and see if I you have a video for it. My boat is from 1991. My starter on my 96 115 Merc works and the motor starts up no problem. This issue is the dash, I have no power getting to it anymore when it was working fine all season. I assume it's a fuse. (but maybe not)... There in lies my problem. I can't find the fuse if there is one. Do you have any videos on how to test for continuity? Love the channel, especially when working on the older two strokes. All the best, Keith
Yep, it adds up in a hurry!
You aren't kidding lol I have a lot of parts and other stuff, plus a discount so it isn't that expensive but I wanted to make it applicable to everybody in a wider range of boats so that it isn't too exact :)
Great information !
NOT enough use tin marine wire in salt automotive wire won't stand up

But who wouldn't want a 24 inch screen on their boat????
@@BornAgainBoating well I know but got to stay on course here!!. Do they make a 36"? Lmao!
How did u get the yamaha engines connected to simrad. what are the equipment needed
😅okay I’m not feeling good about that cost I’m having to upgrade my older boat wires and electrical stuff so I’m freaking out 😮it’s going to take me a year to get everything done
Well done!!!
@@BornAgainBoating Thanks for the advice and the great videos
Im about to add a Simrad 4g radar to my boat and want to run new wires to bus bar that its going to connect to. What gauge wire do you recommend, 14 gauge ? Thank you and love the channel.
Yes, the 14 gauge is a good size for all your pumps and lights and speakers and such :)
Don’t you need separate nav and anchor because while under way you have both but anchored only the back
Yes, that's why you'll use a dual on-off-on switch. So when the switch is up, its both and when down its just the anchor :)

Did you ever do the video wiring the boat?
Can you come to my my boat to see my 23 feet boat we need rewire the hold wire on the boat please?
Where did u get that heat shrink connector kit at
It's just a tackle box and I filled it up with the commentors most commonly used ;)
HOLD UP HOLD UP - did you just say romex? I thought ROMEX was NOT marine grade.
Why wouldn’t use “0” or “00” for the battery switch cables?
Galileo Galilee
I always go big on ground to block and to the starter. Depending on battery size and distance between engine and battery, you may not even be required to install a battery disconnect for the starter circuit.
Do you not worry about YABC color codes? Just curious. I would love to rewire my ‘97 Proline but not sure I can figure out how to do it.
Yes, but you eventually just know the colors lol ;) its not hard, and we are working on doing some wiring tutorials coming up in the future!
lol @ binocular holder :p sorry to jump ahead - will the floors be replaced with coosa?
Yeah, that's quite the holder's they had in there huh lol no worries, we'll just be fixing that one access panel and we're working on the material right now. Coosa is super expensive but I know everybody wants to see it. So, we are working on seeing if we can make that happen for you guys ;)
@@BornAgainBoating i did a new coosa ransom last year with awesome results, heavily considering coosa floors this year.. no pressure :) many thanks
Hi where you found the price list
Where can I get that parts book
Ouch! $8k to re-wire a 23' boat. The truth hurts!
Hahaha
Lol yeah, they can get tricky sometimes and you're right, especially in saltwater!
have u done the labor video of this rewire job yet?
Not yet :/

Arron, what gauge wire did you run for the starting wire from the console to the stern of the boat. Was it 2 or 2/0 wire. I would like to relocate the batteries from the stern to the center console which is roughly 15'.
Well that’s depressing.
Hahahha yes, yes it is lol

Love the videos but you can chill with all the like and subscribe stuff
It cost what it cost to get quality products and good labour to RIGG it properly.
He also said "and labor"
