  • You don’t want to start your European vacation off with the wrong personal item bag! With European airlines, and many major American airlines, tightening their size requirements over the past year, showing up with an “oversized” bag could cost you big bucks. Today I’m comparing two of the most popular 15 inch personal item backpacks, so you can make the right choice for your next journey ✈️

That Lovevook backpack is certainly a favorite of many UA-camrs and I feel like a freak that I don’t care for it. Ordered it twice and returned it both times. It just felt very bulky. The fabric feels very thick and stiff and maybe all those pockets add to the bulk. Also didn’t like the top load feature, much prefer a partial fold-down drawbridge type opening. For now I’m sticking with my Vera Bradley Campus Backpack. Roughly the same size, about 1.5 lbs and I got it on sale for about $40. Has a laptop area, enough pockets, nice trolley sleeve and my water bottle fits side pockets just fine. And it’s squishy!
I always enjoy your videos and you often inspire me rethink some of my methods. Thanks for your thoughtful presentations.

I got the Loveook back pack 2 years ago and have made 3 trips to Europe with it. It was great on the trains and if I did not stuff it too full, it fit under the airline seat no problem. It is comfortable to wear as a backpack and very well made for that price point. I bought the one that has a locking main compartment. Peace of mind on the train as I fall asleep so easily on the train.

I have the Baggallini and have travelled to Europe three times with it over the last 9 months. It worked as a personal item on the stingiest of airlines (Air France, I'm looking at you) and has held up really well. I made a few modifications to personalise it and make it more useful (elastic on one side pocket and a grommet on the other side from the main body into the pocket to feed a charging cord through and shortened the straps). The Lovevook was the bag I had considered purchasing at the time, and I am happy with the Baggallini. Would still like to try the Lovevook, though, as well. Thanks for the side by side comparison!

I came across both of these bags a lot in my UA-cam Europe travel research! I love the comparison video you have done!
I ordered 3 Lovevooks; the 17in in cream/black (after it arrived I realized it's too big for an everyday bag or europe flight personal item bag) & 15.6 inch to compare sizes. then i ordered a 2nd 15.6 to match my new carry-on (IT lightweight in almond brown) thinking I was going to select only one.
Well - i'm blown away at the quality, aesthetic and functionality of these bags.
I'm keeping them ALL for the price of one bagallini. I plan to use the large bag for domestic / weekend road trips as my only luggage. The smaller ones as personal item alongside my carry-on or as a regular day use backpack while traveling - in Black/gray & Tan/Brown 😂 i'm terrible!! 🛍️

I just came through DFW yes from Paris for my global entry interview. It was very different than your experience. I kept looking for the signs but ultimately I had to go through the regular long line for US passports. I asked the agent if she could take care of my global entry interview and she said yes. I had documents ready but she only asked what city I lived in. Then she asked why we were in Europe. Then she gave me my number and said I would get my card in 1 week. This process may different at each site just like security 🤷‍♀️. I’m looking forward for my next trip to skip the line. I would recommend to do the interview before the trip. We didn’t have any available appointments in our city.

Also weight limits really matter with carry on with low cost airlines especially in Australia and Asia. If the bag itself weighs 2kgs or more, it becomes difficult packing all you need ( speaking for myself as a perimenopausal, plus size woman with medication, clothes etc).
Here in Oz at my international airport there are multiple points where airlines staff weigh your bag after check in!

I decided to go through all the European Airlines and get the size of the SMALLEST personal item I could find, and started there. I ended up buying the Dagne Dover Large Landon Carryall Duffel Bag, since when emptied at my destination, I can use it as a tote around town and not look like a tourist because it doesn't look like a travel bag, and it's not a backpack that folks can try to pick pocket out of.
also, When I flew to Europe previously I had the Sara Jessica Parker / Samsonite collaboration Backpack - no it was not anti-theft but I at least had my ex-boyfriend along with me, making sure no one was trying to get into the larger section (I think I would feel it though)

I have that Baggalini bag (at Costco it cost only about $60 or $70). I took it on a 3-week, 4-country trip to visit friends and family in Europe in Oct 2023.
Though I generally love Baggalini purses, I really regretted traveling by air with this bag. We traveled on legacy airlines for the transatlantic and trans Europe flight, as well as one flight on budget airline Ryan Air.
It’s heavy, in my opinion. The backpack straps were awkward to put on/take off my shoulders, and they were difficult to adjust.
I also didn’t like this bag format at all (tall, narrow rectangle, with a “jaw” type top opening). Even if only 2/3 or 3/4 packed in the main compartment, it’s impossible to access anything at the bottom or inside the interior pockets without emptying the contents on top.
Also, when fully packed, the zipper on the “jaw” opening was difficult and slow to open and close and required a lot of assistance from my other hand to hold the zipper tape taut and the jaws together, esp on the journey back home when it was packed more fully. Maybe that was just a zipper quality issue with my specific bag (unlike the dozen+ Baggalini purses I’ve owned, this bag style in the Costco store had lots of thread ends hanging that I had to trim myself after purchase). But resistance zipping over the “jaw humps” on either end could be a characteristic of this style bag.
