Seeing the rule of subtracting the compliment and adding 10 blew my mind! It's something I've always understood subconsciously but seeing it in use opened so many doors. Thank you again for the amazing lesson!
I love love love how you explained the complements. I downloaded an app that had me SO CONFUSED! Your explanation cleared everything up. Thanks so much! You’re a very good teacher.
I am just beginning to learn this and your channel is one of the absolute best! You go slow enough for me to understand and break everything down so easily. Thank you 😭🙌
Thank you! Very clear and easy to understand. I love to see my kids are learning a tool that I have used when I was in the elementary school school and enjoy learning it!
This is helping me IMMENSELY with my mental math as well! I’m preparing for the national exam of Brazil to enter into a university, thank you so much for your patient explanations!! ❤️

This is from my childhood crush a chinese in our place, this is how she thought me on how to use a one bead up and four bead down abacus.... I am just copying and paste it here if it is correct..sorry for to many words and letters i post it in this "comment" section. Copy and paste... Remember that you have to learn how to multiply all one digit by one digit multiplication. OPERATION: A. Multiplying by One Digit......Example 14 x 6....Count all the digits, we have two digits on number fourteen and one digit on number six, all in all we have three digits, now subtract one digit, so we all have two digits, now count from the right of the abacus two rods from the right, this is where we will start, First Multiply six by one; at the second row pull up 1 bead up and one bead down (five or fifty), now we multiply six by four the answer by mind multiplication is twenty four, now move two beads up on the second rod and four beads up on the first rod. By reading it you have the answer of eighty four. B. Multiplying by More than One Digit....Example 12 x 45..Count all the digits, we have two digits on number twelve and two digits on number fifteen, all in all we have four digits, now subtract one digit, so we all have three digits, now count from the right of the abacus three rods from the right, this is where we will start, now multiply four by one; now you move four beads up on the third rod; now lets multiply four by two, now you move down the five bead on the second rod and three beads up; now lets multiply five by one, remember we have to start now at the second rod for it is the second number of forty five, now back to multiplying five by one; now on the second rod we have a count of eight to the positioned beads so we will add using our mind, five plus eight is thirteen, since thirteen is more than nine we will use the third rod, by our reference the second rod (the ones digit and the third rod the tens digit) since all four beads are positioned we cannot add a (tens) bead no more, so adding four (forty) beads plus ten is fifty, so we will pull down the five (fifty) bead and pull down all four (tens beads) beads and on the second rod (as I mention the ones digit) pull up five bead and let the three beads (ones) remain, now lets multiply five by two; by multiplying by mind the answer is ten on the first rod, but ten is more than nine so we will pull up one bead on the second row and make the first rod zero by not moving it no more. By reading the beads positioned from the third rod to the right the first rod you can read it as five hundred forty.
Great videos! I'm learning the abacus and teaching 2 of my children (ages 5 and 8). #20 is 16+53-28...for the -28 part do they need to understand that 6-2=4 (mentally) so they can zero the 5 and add 4 units? I hope this question makes sense. We are enjoying the homework and completing these lessons during our homeschool time. Thanks!
This will be taught in 5’s rules. You will learn step by step from my worksheets. Don’t make your own problems for them to solve until you finish all the episodes.
Thank you so much Miss Abacus for very good videos! I'm thinking, why do you choose to start with ten's complement instead of five's complement? Is there still a thought behind the choice or did it just happen that way?
I use the book that starts with 10’s complement and works very well. Some teachers do start with 5’s complement. I think 10’s concept is important and easier to start for young kids.
Hi Miss Abacus, I have a question about 10's rule. How do I teach my child to add 6 from 5 (5+6), add 7 from 5 (5+7), 5+8 and 5+9? my child needs to process upper 5 to take away numbers before adding 10 to tenth place. Any idea?
I am learning this as 26 year old cause it was never taught at our school, and this is so easy with your explanation, thanks
I learned.it at my 48 years.

In your last problem, how do I know it's 80 not 8?(mentally, I know it is 80, but using the abacus, how can I tell if the right digit is 0)?

u r fantastic!
@MissAbacus how to do 8 plus 6 on it. Because there are no -4 plus 10 for the 6. Or the other way around -2 plus 10 for the 8.
They belong to combo rules so you will find them in my next few videos.

Holy shit I get it.
Wait a sec. How do the beads stay in place ? Is that a magnetic Soroban or something ?
Do they make pocket versions ?
It’s not magnetic but can stay in the place when you move beads.

IAM LEARNING 1TIME
what if i add 10's bead before removing the complement ? will it be right approach or not?
You may do that to get correct answer but better follow the rules so you can perform big numbers smoothly.
My abacus has 1's beads at the top and 5's beads on the bottom
I am confused
So strange😂
