New Layout Build - Street Scene Detail

- I've been busy working on several buildings for the street scene in the corner of the layout. They've taken a long time to put together but in this video I get several buildings closer to completion and construct a new one. I also found some time to add some much needed small details to the general scenery in the surrounding area.

You know its a good day when Everard Junction uploads an update video
Everard Junction is probably the best layout in the world! Richard has an IQ of about 160!
Best series and much more enjoyable than Netflix.
You're the Jedi-Master of details and scratch-builds. 🙂
I never tire of your model making skills, video production, and superb observation and attention to detail. It's never a case of "that'll do" from you! Thank you so much.
I'm always blown away by the level of detail in your models. It's absolutely amazing. Thanks for uploading this video.
This is amazing. Best layout in the UK!
Fantastic! Sending the kids to bed early for this!
With the long, deep focus shots and the theme music, the intro felt like an early 90s truelife, weekly television show.
It's amazing how cathartic it is to watch the bleak backdrops of one's youth being recreated in amazing detail. I almost feel like I'm back there, trudging home through the empty, sodium -lit streets, long after the last tube has gone.
The lights shine cross the valley,
The wind blows up the alley...
Cue The Police “Invisible Sun”. Few songs take me to the 80’s clearer that that one.
Oh how I wish , I was lying in the arms of Mary ......
agreed
It's funny, aside from the cars driving on the wrong side, this reminds me of places in Covington, Kentucky, USA, when I was a kid looking at the trains on the overpasses next to the houses and factories. Trains are universal. TY for the post. Thanks for the memories.
Cant wait for a scrapyard update. I love watching anything you build but the scrapyard was a personal favorite
Well, my missus is impressed, which is high praise indeed!
I just watched a Luke Towan video where he's started building a model railway, and was thinking "when's the next Everard Junction update video?". Then BAM! Spooky 😲
Same
The greatest intro to a model railway video I have ever seen. Thank you so much for the time taken to produce your videos.
The elephant in the room should be allotment gardens. Sheds, various plants would make a lot for eye candy.
Amazing amount of details to all the rest.
Wow when you turned on the night scene it took me back 40 years to when my dad took me to the horticultural hall in London to a model railway exhibition. I can remember the excitement at the detail..Thank you.
That canal path is definately in need of more mud, weeds, rubbish and love the dogs mess/mooring rings. True 80's style! Thanks for another great video Richard. Keep up the great work, the layout is looking amazing.
It's on the list, right now its a bit bland. Certainly needs some more details. Cheers
There are some excellent railway modellers on UA-cam but to my mind your layout is exceptional. The attention to detail is amazing, you aren’t just a railway modeller but also a historical architect ,artist and social commentator.
I’m not a modeller myself, but I have an interest in railways, and I love looking at these works of art.👍
Nice scenery for the "Lock, stock and two smoking barrels". Well done!😊
Nice one again Richard. Our local scrap yard back then had the 1500 watt tungsten tube lights, very bright white light in various areas that were left on all night.
Yes I think it would be realistic to have security lighting and maybe a guard dog or two roaming the compound.
Life can't be bad when Everard Junction posts a new video!
Incredibly detailed modelling- the work of a dedicated genius! Now back to trying to make my corn field for an American Civil War battlefield!
Enjoying this from Boston, MA in the USA. Been watching you for years. Amazed at your patience and attention to detail. I am a O gauge enthusiast myself and would never have the ability to do what you do. What a joy to watch.
Well I'm pleased you've enjoyed it. As always more videos are on the way, cheers
The increasingly intense realism of your model now reminds me why I fell out of love with railways in your chosen era!
Always love your update videos. The empty space would be a prime location for a pub, entry from the front and both sides. Can't wait to see what happens next.
The shot from inside the new building looking through the windows was sheer class. This is simply the best layout on UA-cam. Well done
Another great update. Have a think about the the scrap yard lighting. Possibly a couple of spot lights on a scaffold pole with a wire drapped between them and back to the building for the electricity supply. I can't see them digging the ground and putting in proper cabling and ducting system.
You might want to look at a light post outside John Menzies frontage as street lighting is installed on the outside of bends to highlight the kerb and bend in the road.
Keep up the great work 🤌
Some more lights are planned. I ran out during the build so the side street currently has no street lamp. Some shop front lighting is also on my list. Cheers
@@EverardJunction shout if you need any advice/help as I’m a local council street lighting manager and worked in highways for 35years
I love the way the layers of detail build up. A scene looks good and then you tweak it. It looks better so you tweak it again. Brilliant.
Thanks Richard I really appreciate your videos, I understand the work involved. Had my morning cup of tea with the video a little indulgence brilliant.
Every time you do a video I think “that’s a great way to finish that area” you come back later and add a whole lot more detail. I don’t think I’ve ever thought something you’ve done wasn’t necessary it always makes the scene a little more realistic. And the lighting effects are simply outstanding. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I like to take each area to a certain point where I'm happy with it. There's always room for more details but I find it doesn't work if you force yourself to do it. So I tend to go back and forth between scenes when I feel inspired to progress with a particular section. Thanks for watching, cheers.
Everard Junction, yay! Enjoyed every moment. Brilliant!
Wow, Everard Junction and Luke Towan drop railway videos on the same day. Had to check the calendar and make sure it wasn't Christmas. It doesn't seem possible but you've lifted the bar again Richard with this version of Everard Junction. I'd love to see someone add a model train shop on their layout, a real "Inception" moment. Kia ora
I'll probably build a model shop at some point. There's a few places left on the layout where I have room for more shops & buildings. Glad you enjoyed it, cheers.
42 minutes of junction goodness :)
I agree, a random light in the scrapyard would look good. That said, it's hard to see it's just a model.....the work you've done is amazing.
I have to admit it really is a true representation of london, the level of detail, coke cans, the dark but orange light casting shadows on thr streets is how i remember growing up in north London, living behind the railway, the noise was always soothing and now living in Ireland watching your channel always brings me back home thanks everard
The detail now really makes the layout pop, especially the night time views. For some strange reason I thought the bare area would make a good market science, but introduces problems with parking etc. Thanks for the update.
I like the idea of a market but at night I would need to change the scene to show it all closed up. Bit tricky so I've decided against it for that spot. Cheers
Awesome layout, great build .
I can watch your videos all day .
SOOO KOOOOOLLLLLL !!!
I've been planning a layout larger than this on paper. I want to do it to this level of detail but watching your videos makes it look impossible. The amount of time and work to do such a small area is crazy. Excellent work.
Spellbinding. My admiration grows with each instalment. In my humble opinion, a lighted shop sign - think 80s orange “J Sainsbury” or red/white “Kwik Save”, or red/orange/white “Safeway” - would look amazing at night.
Looking good Richard. At first I thought those mooring rings were something else, entirely different, thinking blimey, they've thought of everything lol. Keep up the good work
Ha ha, you beat me to it! I was thinking exactly the same thing
Involving dogs? Yeah, that's what I thought!😬
I'm glad that you explained that you placed the mooring rings because, in the sequence when you were placing them I was convinced that they were little piles of dog mess! Although I think that dog mess would be very realistic the fact that they were being placed so uniformly apart was troubling me. :)
Wonderful Richard, deep topographer's paradise.
Absolutely amazing, superb upgrade, i drove trains for BR throughout "Your Period" and recognise so many features from all over. I thought you might have put a street market on that empty plot, but it just keeps getting better and better, each time you let us visit. The houses lighting, in fact the lighting overall is BRILLIANT. I peered through so many windows during night driving, sometimes wondering about all those individual lives that might live there.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I've thought about some sort of street market a few times. Justifying it during the night time sessions would be a bit tricky so I've decided to focus more on buildings instead. Cheers
Glad you explained they were mooring rings - when I watched the video, I was trying to work out why dog turds had to be spaced out so accurately! 🤭
Nice bit of work - I've been watching for quite a while now, and its great to see the updates and changes. Excellent layout.👍
The little details are having a big effect and really bringing it to life. I wasn't sure what the mooring rings were until you explained and I now realise, while scale dog poos would be period-appropriate, my imagination was getting carried away! Thank you for another update and for sharing your superb layout here. On top of all the work that goes into it, I am amazed that you even have time to produce these wonderful videos. Your effort bring a lot of pleasure to those of us who lack the time, talent and funds to build our own layouts. Warmly appreciated and eagerly anticipating the next episode 🙂
Rumbelows would have had a dish up. Looking spot on, hyper realistic modelling.
Nice work on the apartment/condo street scene. A lot of detail and character for a massive project. Excellent! On a lighter note, the guy who went up and down the street selling those curtains gets special mention: he managed to sell everyone the same color.
Awesome intro sequence, especially the night shots, so real looking - On the property row maybe some window boxes, hanging baskets, exterior porch lights and house numbers/names would be a good addition for some tiny details :) Wonderful layout, always impresses me
Certainly. Once I get back around to working on those houses again some more touches like window boxes would really help
Just mind blowing detail! What the blank area needs is a traditional boozer to cater for the folk who live in the terrace.
Probably one of the best layouts I have ever seen. This guy puts in an awful lot of effort into his layout and it really shows. No detail is too small. When I see this, it reminds me of my childhood, because I grew up in the inner city and this is very familiar to me. Utterly sublime. EDJ is amazing.
As many others have commented, ab fab Richard. Everad Junction vids are always a highlight. Arthur
Superb details. I'm in love with that underpass, it looks so realistic. Maybe you can add a tiny red and green light (port and starboard) on the ship, and a light inside. That would really bring the ship to life in the dark.
I have been following you for many years. I stumbled into the channel looking for a way to do automatic signaling and found your how-to vídeos. Next thing I was binge watching the series. I've followed you ever since.
Like so many others have said, it's your knowledge, research, and attention to detail that makes this so fascinating. That combined with the fact that you don't rage or lose your temper or curse non-stop make this my favorite model train channel. It's the only one I subscribe to anymore.
The whole thing is mesmerizing: it has two lives, the layout in reality but on the filming too
Look forward to watching this on my day off 👍👌
I used to live in Brixton, it looks great, I love the small details like the grass in the pavements and the lighting is brilliant.
Most fascinating as always. As long time followers of your work, the in-depth diligence demonstrated once again is just astonishing. It's so pleasing seeing this astounding new lay-out coming together piece by piece in the way you so masterfully do it. Just wonderful.
Didn't think it was possible, it just gets better and better. A truly inspiring project and the filming is top notch, captures the period and look of so many places common in towns and cities as I remember them from my younger years.
Cheers! Glad it brought back some memories. It's very much a generic town but the plan was always to make it feel authentic. I try to find real life examples of most of the things I build. Helps give it that period feel.
Amazing how each layer adds an element of realism. Love the oxidised base model Astra with grey bumpers and grilles, far more common than a GTE. Of course no Greater London railings are complete without a bike chained to them, often missing its wheels! Great work as ever.
Simply outstanding attention to technical and vernacular detail. Bloody good job. Made my day.
The opening sequence is really quite something. The view down the street with the demu visible on the bridge at the end was gold star.
What about a single decker bus and one car with manual on/ off led lights ( one or two leds with Perspex rod to the outside to conduct the light) and then you’ve got a last bus and a taxi or a shift worker going home when the roads are empty. Just a thought as your road rail illumination is very impressive
I just love your layout. It reminds me of "This is England" or my summerschool in Reading. I am from Germany. Your layout and your love to detail is the finest i found so far on youtube. In my ranking far above Maerklin of Sweden
Just remarkable work. It's a genuine privilege to see this layout come together.
Phew! An update. I was getting withdrawal symptoms here. Great work as always and stellar attention to detail. As for that big blank spot in front of the houses, I'm hoping for an 80s era petrol station.
Great update Richard!!! Awesome!! Cheers Onno.
I love all the detail work! The only suggestion I can think of is to maybe make those silver bins in front of the row houses a little more grungy, they don't stay that new and shiny new for long.
You are one of the best modelers I've seen. Well done!
What's amazing also is the cars driving around look so real too and add to the scene. Great stuff.
Fantastic detailing.....
As a side, John Menzies used to sell many books and magazines, I used to go there to buy my Ian Allan combined volumes back in the early 1970's 👍
Every step of the way. Your layout and modeling skills have amazed me. You do fantastic work. Thank you for sharing it with us.
A security light or 2 on the scrapyard could be fun, comes on a timer and exposes some dubious action.
Well done Richard. Another great update.
Details, details, details….. on a layout size that you have that is quite a task, but you are getting there. 👍
Cheers, it's getting there slowly. Certainly takes a very long time!
That perspective down the street in the shot at 1:50 is excellent. It really shows the value of having some long sight lines on a layout, and the houses really look like what I would expect a street of built-at-the-same-time houses to look like.
Richard as always tour modelling is capturing the urban scene perfectly. If I can add anything, may I mention "life". There would be a homeless chap under a duvet in a hoody under the bridge. There would be a pool of last nights barf at the end of the bench. The scrap yard would have a tattooed bloke in a wife beater and a grizzly dog on a chain. Ladies of the night would frequent canal side.
Just a few suggestions.
Kind regards Gary
Great shot through the window near the end
It's not my period for railways but your incredible skill level, sir, is to be congratulated.
Fantastic progress, always look forward to your videos! Well done 👏
So nice to see our ModelSigns street lights once again! Another great update, the layout is looking amazing!
Nice wor, just a thought about the two shops. You may have already thaught about the back alley between the shops and the cannal, but a number of dustbins and crates staked up at the back of the shops will look quite authentic. I also think there is a lack of a fire escape for the upper floors of the shops, especially the shops closer to the railway. Best regards, l really have enjoyed watching your 2nd railway take shape.
Fantastic video as ever mate so jealous of your layout , eye for detail just blows me away every time keep up the excellent work .
What super progress. Every scene you have shown is like a step back in memory. For my part, I'm thinking front door steps for the terrace, WW2 building damage, and spare ground and garages for the triangle and one light on a tall pole for the scrap yard and a bad dog! A continual, excellent, movable feast for the eyes. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to document and share. Regards, Stephen.
Richard, Have you thought of using self adhesive copper foil for your lighting connections inside the buildings? It comes in a roll about 9" wide (I haven't measured the length, but it is a quite long roll). You just cut off a strip (about 5mm wide), peel off the backing paper, stick it to the inside walls and solder your connections to it. Once painted, being less than 0.5mm thick, its almost invisible. For other wires inside the building, have you considered using enamelled copper "transformer" wire. It comes in various thicknesses, but you can use some of the thinnest, as an LED only takes a very little current. It would be about the same thickness as the wires on your street lights. Again, almost invisible.
I use the enameled wire quite a lot but on buildings I've found it's easily snapped when lifting the building off the layout. However the copper roll is certainly worth a try, I look into it. Cheers
finally a new video .I have missed them. Exellent as always .
Superb video, I'm loving the detail you are putting into your wonderful layout.
Fluorescent lighting was still very much in vogue in the late 1980s. Unlike tungsten and sodium, fluorescent had a distinctive green tint. Most shops and public places were fluorescent lit at this time.
Superb detailing again Richard !!!!. LOVE those terraced houses !!!!. Only one thing missing from the roofs or some of the window sills.... Some pigeons !!!!
My thought too.
I've got loads of them sitting here. Painting them is not fun but they will eventually appear on the scene.
Wow Richard top Man . Superb Detailed buildings. The Street scenes are very true to life. Looking forward to seeing your idea for that central available space. Lovely running Photos and videos of Trains me Marvellous. Best wishes Richard Crompton. Canterbury Kent.
Incredible attention to detail Richard, the additions are really making the scene come to life. Nice work on the new Menzies/Office building as well. I noticed the guy in the Golf was being followed around the neighbourhood, he must be under surveillance as he has Bodie & Doyle following him wherever he goes !! All the best.........Andy
Great to see you are doing well with your layout. I’ve been watching you for about 11 years starting with your how to videos. I love getting to catch up on these again as I haven’t seen one in 4 years.
It's always so pleasing to see one of your videos come up and this one doesn't disappoint. Your beautifully realised models and atmospheric details are wonderful to see. I love the idea of some moody lighting in the scrap yard to add to the atmosphere. The ending shots at night took me back to far away times. 😊
That was a great opening to the update. The night scenes are amazing.
Nice video Richard. The level of detail on the row of terrace houses is outstanding! and really look the part. Nice job with the small scratch build fills the space nicely. Looking forward to the next one. - Nicholas.
Incredibly realistic. Excellent work.
Shop fronts, there is always a Woolworth store and W H Smith as I recall, also nice to see a couple of cats.
some lovely work there, small details make the scenery really 'pop'. a couple of suggestions, Alarm boxes, maybe on some houses and certainly on the shops and offices, and maybe a big 'To Let' sign, the large double sided ones up high on one or more of the offices, ( that would save lighting and interior fitments too)
I think in the empty space a play park should be there or a little greenery like the bird box in Bromsgrove to get a more town centre/ outskirts feel to the layout
As usual stunning work and lovely to look at and watch
I wish I had your sense of determination!
Your layout is really coming together! I too always look forward to your updates.
Excellent work as always, scrap yard could have one large poll with 4down lighters for security, just love the work 👍
Wow another excellent video thanx for doing a sterling job on that new Everard its just the job cheers
Superb indeed - from what I can seen and remember of watching EJ for over a year - this is one of the best detailed layouts in the UK. Is it possible for OP to do a video showing the whole layout ? and what it looks like from the inside
Excellent work.
This is all looking extremely convincing. Keep at it.
