For sale in our St. Louis showroom is a disco styled 1979 AMC AMX. Did someone say pinstripes? Yes this AMX has a few, and a super sweet hood decal like no other. Powering this unique AMX is a 304 CID V8 engine, which features an Edelbrock aluminum intake and carburetor. A 3 speed automatic transmission is matched to the open rear end that sports 2:76 gears. Options on this 1979 AMC AMX include: AM/FM Radio, Manual Sunroof, Power Steering, Tilt Wheel, Vinyl Interior, Seat Belts, Raised White Letter Radial Tires, and Aluminum/Alloy Wheels. The AMX model was transformed from the Concord hatchback to the Spirit liftback for 1979. The Spirit was a subcompact car produced from 1979 to 1983 and replaced the Gremlin. It shared the Gremlin's platform, and was offered in two hatchback versions, each with two doors, a sedan and a liftback. The AMX had several features back in 79' that would make it very popular today. The blacked out grill, fiberglass fender flares, and rear spoiler all combine for an individualized and sporty look. Underneath, the AMX sports a GT rally-tuned suspension, which helped it win its class at the 24 Hour Nürburgring race, out of 120 cars. Peak inside the window of this late 70's hatchback and you'll see the all black interior is in great condition. The floor shifter provides a great sporty feel to this coupe as does the glass sunroof. Pop free the 3 harnesses to the sunroof in a flash, and you've got another window. This AMX features recent paint and body work, including of course, the pinstripes. The first and last thing you notice and will remember about this AMC AMX is the hood decal, you just have to see it to appreciate it. To see this 1979 AMC AMX in greater detail including HD pictures and an HD video visit www.GatewayClassicCars.com or our St. Louis showroom. These had custom bodywork done at the factory where the fenders were partially cut away and the custom fender inserts were added so larger and wider high performance tires could be added. Some aftermarket louver kits for the rear side and back window used to be available that made these cars look really hot. The 401 will still fit the engine bay very easy, where with the Offenhauser dual Holley intake manifold and some other modifications can make this into a near 500hp true high performance machine. These great little Gremlin-Spirit based cars looked much like a 2/3 scale Trans Am, which is a great look.

beautiful car.. it's nice to see what mine will look like again. in about 85 I saw a red one every day on my way to school and fell in love with it at 10 yrs old. in 91 i picked up an 80 am in white and drove it to school every day. then in 92 I found a 79 v8 4 spd car and bought it. black with tan interior, the kicker with it is no power steering or brakes. only other option is an AM/FM/CB radio.. nice light car that once it put a 4bbl and duals on it it really woke up. soon I hope to get started on its resurrection.

Outstanding !! To say the very least. I bought mine in Calgary Alberta for $12,000.00 CDN . It was white with a light blue valour interior. It had the 304 ci V8 with four on the floor. I had the exhaust system replaced with straight pipes with glass packs. It sounded mean !! I enjoyed each & every minute I had this beautiful jewell of a car.

I was a Canadian army brat based in Baden Germany back from 77 till 82. The AMX was our family car. Black with the hood decal, and louvers on the back window. My mom and I would drive the autobahn and bury the needle. Good times.

I disagree with your dash comment. These dashes were cool, aggressive, and proven. AMC put them in everything on this platform from 1970 until sometime in the 80s, I think they even installed them in Eagles.

But the next day, they called and said I could not have it because it was already sold and the dealer didn’t know it. Two other times I had chances to get

      That's an ambitious project.
I had mine so long ago, I really don't remember too much about it.
Other than the 6 popper, I believe it had a dodge transmission and starter. I cold be wrong about that. ( I was told that the whole car was built by piecing together only American made car part)
I do remember if you used the cruise control and hit resume from a dead stop it would do a burn out until it got to the speed you had set it at. (A potential danger to say the least.)
It also had louvers on the back window that caused it to be so heavy, it would not stay open without a prop stick.
You can do what you'd like, but if I had the time and money, I'd restore it to it's most original factory build as possible.
Do lot's of research before you commit to it. Not all cars can handle today's modern motors.
      Good luck.....

No factory 360s for that model. Hell, there was zero AMC products with a 360 for 79-80 when these were made. Hell, the 304 was even dropped in 80. The last AMC with the 360 was the 78 Matador Couple/Sedan/Wagon models. It is very easy to swap a 360 in there though.

360s were still being built for the Cherokees and Wagoneers. There were some midnight machinations at play. I should have said the only one.
I don't know if it is true or not but I've heard that AMC was seriously considering a tall deck version of the 401 that would be stroked and possibly a larger bore that was 460+ cubic inches.the bore spread on all AMC blocks is 4.750". That's 1/8th" more than the Olds big block and the Pontiacs. Same as the Buick.
