The area used to be a mine? I highly recommend you do not plant food in the soil without testing it first. It may be contaminated with heavy metals that are hazardous to health (lead, for example). Leafy greens, cabbages, etc (anything you eat the leaves of) are the most susceptible to absorbing heavy metals in the soil. Edible roots (potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets, etc) are the 2nd most susceptible to heavy metal absorption. Fruits (tomatoes, berries, squash) are the 3rd most susceptible to absorbing heavy metals (the leaves of these plants take the brunt of the absorption). Please, please be careful.
I am currently gardening on property where the land use is unknown as it was abandoned for a period of five years and the most recent previous owner flipped the property (It was built in the 1950s, so lead contamination is a big concern for me). Phytoremediation takes a very long time to do and the best thing is to have tall garden beds where the plants have little to no contact with the contaminated soil. Furthermore, another point of concern in my particular circumstances is that the surrounding properties keep "manicured lawns"--i.e. they are heavily treated with pesticides and herbicides/weed killers. Round-Up is popular, despite it's known links to cancer in farmers that use it as an herbicide on their fields.
I'm sad I can't see the herb garden but I totally understand. Tunnel and plants look amazing.
Protecting the potatobuckets from little potato made me smile.
I don’t know why but I assumed you lived wwwaayy out in the country in a little cottage but I’m guessing you live a fairly populated area judging by the sound of cars going by 😅
Anywho...my mother started her own little garden about five years ago and she gets so exited when she sees her mangos coming in. It must be exciting growing and seeing what you eat.
I've been watching your channel for 8 years now and l absolutely love it. Especially now. I adore your videos, they make me so positive about life !
I understand as the privacy, perhaps you could do a video showing off the herbs. Maybe show a demo on drying and using the herbs.
I'm with Hubby I hate the heat must be the Irish in me lol. Oooh those sunflowers sound amazing :0) xx
It looks so beautiful 😍
I'm looking forward to your future garden updates and how much you will be harvesting (and for how long all the produce will last).
I'm so glad you're taking such precautions to protect yourself and your family! We often give away too many details on the internet.
Amazing garden! It's wonderful to see all the effort yourself and your husband have put into it. My boyfriend's parents live in Guernsey and have a vine house with a 100 year old vine growing in there. They also have chickens and have a lovely little veggie garden.
We had a pond in our garden when I was a toddler and I fell in, safe to say the pond got filled in very quickly 😂
It looks so pretty, it kinda make me wanna make myself a garden like this
It's going to be stunning I think in a few year. Once we've added the patio+pergola, got more food growing and maybe a bbq area it's going to be my own little slice of heaven.
Oh, the containers will def work for the potatoes. subbed the channel to follow you in your growing endeavors
Loving this! More food , plant, garden related vids plzzz!!!
Amazing! My parents have a terrace garden in progress for a decade now and it doesn't look half as good, yours is sooo well-planned! I'm planning on starting a herb garden when I get a yard too, much love! Also, please make a video on your canning process for the tomatoes, that sounds fascinating! Canned goods are hard to come by where I'm from 🌈
you look so happy! i'm so happy for you i wish you the best!
Love these kinds of videos! So interesting :) really hope I'll be able to do the same one day in the backyard
Oh my gosh, please give an update on the bucket potatoes. Using your videos as inspiration for when I finally get my hands on our roof terrace, but can't plant anything into the roof itself, so a freestanding little poly tunnel and bucket plants are perfect! Also, would love an update on the chilli peppers too. :D
Hi Klaire! How did you learn how to do all this? Is there a book or two?
This is my first year gardening as well! I'm so excited!!!!! I wish you all these luck with your garden! You're definitely putting in the hard work!
Have you considered using one of those sifting dishes for kids to separate the rocks from the soil? Then you would have a bit more space for better soil and you could wash the rocks and use them elsewhere in your yard for landscaping. Just curious. Great video! :)
We'd be there forever with barely anything to show for it. The ground is just 90% gravel, which is why we're planning raised beds in the long run. Better control over the soil quality too.
Last summer, my uncle gave us A LOT of tomatoes and what my mum did was turn them all into homemade chilli sauce using the fresh chillies we had. A very good way to use up a bunch of tomatoes if you ask me.
Very impressive!
That is a lot of tomato plants. Good luck, it all looks great!
Would you be open to doing a video on how to grow these plants? Or recommend the sources you follow? I would really like to know which method you are using. My herbs haven’t even germinated and its been 3 weeks.
Happy National Creativity Day Klaire!
Can you do a video on your compost?
Exciting to see the polytunnel in operation. Are you going to pollinate the tomatoes yourself or are you going to move them outside of the polytunnel to get pollinated?
This is amazing! I remember a few videos ago you mentioned you had to restrict your diet because of your health so do you find a difference in growing your own chili peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes?
How did you learn everything you know about growing plants?
Google often is really good, reddit, books, and such are super helpful!
My Nan did stuff like that! Also! My mum and you share a name!
