    "that's it, you're done!"
idk why, but that line just brings about a nostalgic feeling. ❤️ thank you for your content.

It’s not a Klaire video without that line. She stopped for awhile and it made me sad.
Same with Michelle Phan actually, she always signed off with a Good luck! Since she’s been back she hadn’t been doing that, and then it finally happened and I had happy nostalgia vibes.

I would definitely remove the second layer of trim on the inside of the red dresses hem! It’s double the weight and stiffness you need, and it just doesn’t make a lot of sense there. If you feel like you need to finish it of very nicely on the inside, just take a strip of a very thin plain fabric and sew it on. I think then it will fall much much nicer! :)

Ugh Klaire, I love how your videos aren't always huge makeovers! I really like that some of them are just quick fixes.
I've had depression for a long time, and my brain doesn't always have the capacity to do the big projects. Your videos remind me that the small projects are okay to do too and be proud of :) Thank you for these small escapes!

Thread sometimes breaks if you're using the wrong type of needle or if the tension isn't right. I totally understand that using sewing machines can sometimes be frustrating, but it gets easier over time. :)

Sometimes I get so mad at my sewing machine I actually speak to it. I’m like “Why are you doing this to me? I brought you from the store, I gave you a good home, why do you hate me?” Lol

I think the neckline came out quite well, but if you end up getting tired of it and want something more simple, I'd suggest just sewing in either a beautiful button or a snap button where you want the joint of the sides to go. If there's a gap down towards the sash, you can sew in another snap button or two. Love your videos!

that's a beautiful hem design! It really suits the black and red dresses!
I love how the design looks against the red dress but I can see what you initially meant about the shape. maybe un-doubling it might fix some of the stiffness? the hem fabric is clearly stiffer than the red dress fabric and noticeably heavier, some of that might fade with continued wear making it more flexible?

I love that you share the whole process including misshaps. I often talk myself out of doing things in fear that I’ll mess up and it’d be a waste of time and energy, but watching videos like this shows that things could work out in the end if you keep calm and keep trying. 💕

Yeah just take off the inside part of the doubled trim and it should fall much better. I thnk the neckline looks wonderful. The black dress came out great!

I love how you make a whole video about something that might seem so simple. I feel like we are used to get so much information shoved up our heads at once and it’s such a beautiful thing to concentrate on smaller things

I'm guessing the trim/hem is Indian? Those are usually attached to slightly thicker fabric, similar thickness as the hem itself. The dress is light weight that's why the bottom of the dress isn't draping well, looks heavy like you said

I also know the frustration a sewing machine can give you but it really gets better with practice. I can't even exactly describe what I do with mine but you just get used to the moods the machine has. But here some tips that generally should help:
    - Play around with the tension settings on your machine
    - try different threads (sometimes the cheaper ones work better)
    - rewind the bobbin thread (this can do wonders) and make sure it spins smoothly by tugging on the thread
    - change the needles, sometimes just to a new one but more often it depends on the fabric type
    - try sewing it with the hem on top and the dress under it, the hem might have been pulling on the thread while sewing
That's all I can think of, maybe it helps :)

Yes! And when you mess with the tension, change it incrementally. There are tons of simple thread tension diagrams that'll give you a quick pic of what might be happening (tight on top, top thread too tight, etc.).

Ah good I’m glad my hatred for sewing machines is not just me. Yes hand sewing might take longer but I won’t be caught swearing at a machine for about 20 minutes every time the thread gets jammed.
It looks beautiful and it really suits you x you’ve done a wonderful job. I love your channel so much. It makes me feel relaxed and calm which is something I don’t feel very often, especially in this pandemic. Thank you for your wonderful content

That trim is so pretty! I can't decide if I like it better with the red fabric or the black. I'm sure others have said it, but it might hang a little better as one layer instead of two. If not, you can always find a matching red lace to sew to the bottom.
I don't know if it will be helpful but here is a quick list of things that can make your machine snap the thread, eat your fabric, or leave a nest of scraggly threads on the underside:
    1. The machine must be properly oiled often, especially old machines.
    2. A dull needle causes all kinds of problems. A new one for every project is recommended. Sometimes I cheat and use the same one for two or three projects if they are a lot smaller than, say, a whole dress or something like that.
    3. Use a ballpoint needle for stretch fabrics, and a normal one for wovens.
    4. Use the right needle size. Size 11 for lightweight/thin fabrics, size 14 for medium weight, size 16 or even 18 for heavy fabrics (or many layers of fabric).
    5. The sewing machine tension can usually be left at, or close to, 4 on the dial for medium weight fabrics where you aren't sewing too many layers. When sewing thin fabrics (especially one or two layers) you might have to turn the dial to a lower number to loosen the tension. It's a higher number for thicker fabrics or lots of layers. You have to figure out for yourself how much you need to move the dial though. On some sewing machines you can breathe on the tension dial and it will change the tension, others you might have to turn the dial all the way up or down to get a good result.
    5. Sewing machines can sometimes "eat" fabric and break the thread when trying to sew a narrow hem (1/8 - 1/4 inch) especially with thin fabrics. Placing a strip of tissue paper under the fabric can help with that.
    6. This one is a little random, but sometimes after changing the tension you need to unthread then re-thread the sewing machine. Maybe it's just my machine, but on occasion it goes wacko after changing the tension and I don't exactly know why. Rethreading can work like turning a computer off and then on again.
    7. Sometimes it's not user error at all. An old machine could need professional maintenance, and sometimes a sewing machine is a demon possessed lemon. I bought the latter once. Hand to God it wasn't me, it was the machine. I did everything I could including taking it to a professional to be worked on. I still wanted to back over that thing with my car.

I cant seem to understand the “tension” it takes between elements in the sewing machine and I too get frustrated at the darn thing. Hand sewing seems more stable to me though. Although time spent is...not ideal.

  • @annasmith4236
    @annasmith4236 4 роки тому +1

Maybe the tension on your machine is not right, which could cause the thread to break. If you don't have a manual you can try googling it!

  • @Midlife_Manical_Mayhem

wrong thread weight and wrong needle size can cause threads to break. just a thought if you have issues in the future. the red dress is not the right style or fabric content for the heaviness of the dual hem. i think that if you remove the inner hem, it will hang much more nicely and you will like it much more. also, just a thought - if you have a small piece of the hem left, you could sew it with just an edge poking up behind the front panel of the bodice, so that it ties in even more with the bottom. although, that one came out really cute.

As someone who favors hand-sewing over sewing machines any day, I felt so sympathetic when you started getting annoyed with the sewing machine! Hand-sewing may be tedious, but sometimes it's just easier mentally!

I can feel the pain with the sewing machine, I just hate it too 😂 But I think with a little practice I could learn how to use it properly.. idk

The thread on my sewing machine keeps snapping too. Usually I find it’s because it’s on the wrong tension setting

How old was the thread you were trying to use? I recently started sewing on my great grandmother's machine and she had a huge stash of threads with it...they're too old and brittle to be used in a machine

It was around 6:08 when I realized you made a typeface of your handwriting and got totally distracted by that instead you finishing the red dress. Then I paid attention to the black one. I am SO ADHD. I love that black dress, you look stunning. The red one... I’m kinda like you. I need to get used to it. I loved it before the work, so I was surprised you didn’t just use dress weights. But it’s you so I’m also not surprised 😊❤️
