    EDIT NOVEMBER 2019 - a few people have brought to my attention that apparently reference letters aren't required! You'll just need the contact info of your references to put on your application. Should've written this when my sister applied but didn't think to write it on here.
    EDIT DECEMBER 2018 - I'm getting A LOT of the same questions over and over again, many of which are very easy to do a 2 minute Google search and will give you an answer much quicker than I'll be able to reply. There's also lots that will easily be answered by clicking the links in the description box of this video - including admission requirements. I can try to help, but you guys also gotta do some of your own research (it's definitely a skill you need to be at UBC anyways, so might as well practice it!)!
    I left tons of helpful links in the description of this video!! There's also a lot of other useful resources online that will be able to help you out with your application (I didn't want to include everything cuz this video would've been 10 years long), just remember to do your research :) Also I just realized there's a typo, for UVIC it was a $2500 scholarship and it was their entrance scholarship-- so if you're planning to apply there just based on your grades you can get that much money!

    update for 2020 high school grads:
    Some of you may or may not know but there is no more provincial exams for any subjects for our grad year. Your grades are everything, so work hard on your grades, join a lot of clubs and fully complete your capstone project if your school is implicating the course.

      I'm applying to UBC SCIENCE but I have a 52% Socials 11... Am I doomed? Do they look at socials?

    • @KawaiiForever411
      @KawaiiForever411 5 років тому +3

      ItsAMeme Mario
      UBC now looks at all your marks just to see how you are as an overall student. Because you’re planning to apply to sciences, UBC will focus on your science courses (bio, chem, psych, physics etc etc) more. It doesn’t mean that they won’t take it into account or ignore it though. Work hard on that 52%! Try and score for a 64 or a 70, but if you’re really worried, summer school is also an option.

    • @itsamememario545
      @itsamememario545 5 років тому +4

      CloudyElle I’m currently in grade 12 and that 52% was the final mark of socials 11 I did last year so it is set; I calculated my mark to just pass. I think it’s too late now as I don’t have time to do it online either, so I’ll do my best on my current courses. Thanks for your advice!

    • @JDairShine
      @JDairShine 5 років тому +5

      @@itsamememario545 Don't worry about it. If your grades in grade 12 are high enough they won't care. I had a 62% in Automotive 11 and still got in to sciences and my Gr. 12 grades weren't even that high. Just have a good personal profile. Also, even if you don't get in to UBC don't sweat it. It may even be smarter to do 2 years at Lagara and then transferring to UBC after. Saves money and is a more gradual transition.

    UBC was my dream university. I was taken out of high school when I was 13 and I regret not trying my best to go back. I feel like I was fourteen yesterday and now I’m 17 with a grade seven education. I don’t know if I can go on in life because it’s just too hard. I used to have aspirations and goals and it all went downhill because my parents decided to take me out of school. I feel like I’ll never get my education and I’ll never be able to get into UBC. I’ve basically just been breaking down recently because I’m being hit with reality. I missed out on high school, and my teenage years, for nothing. I’ll never get those years back. I’m almost an adult now, and I have no goals anymore. I wish I could go back to when I was 13 and keep my goals. Sorry for the rant, I’m just sad.

      Hey, I'm so sorry you've had such a rough go. If you're interested, I finished my high school courses online at ILC.org. It's fully accredited and they have grades 9-12. It's $40 per course. Because of life events, I wasn't able to finish in an actual school, but I actually found learning through distance studies with ILC to be way better. Let me know what you think and if you'd like a study buddy :) or just someone to chat with. All the best to you

    Hey Lina!! Your video was very informative and cleared a lot of ambiguity for me..I'm currently enrolled in grade 10 and aspire to pursue my undergrad in PPE ( politics, philosophy & economics). As it turns out, UBC facilitates that program and the school ticks a lot of my boxes and I can't wait to go there. I have a few questions that I hoped you would answer.
    Generically speaking, whats the prerequisite average for admission into UBC? If you don't mind sharing, what were your grades like in high school?
    From a social standpoint, how was your transition into uni? (Is it easy to make friends on campus?)
    How relevant is the IB diploma/bundle in the scope of UBC admission? (Do IB students have the upper hand over students enrolled in academic classes?)

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  5 років тому +1

      The required average varies by program - so I can't give you an exam # but if you're from Canada you can check that here: you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/canadian-highschools/#british-columbia . Typically I would say between 80-90 with combined with a good personal profile should be good. But it could be a bit lower for some programs in the Arts Faculty. I shared some of my grades in the video! Around high 80's -95's.
      You definitely have to be involved in some way and go to events to meet people if you're not living on residence (I didn't live in residence my first year). but if you live in residence it'll be a lot easier to make friends that way since everyone is in the same boat and you're all living so closely!
      mhmm I wouldn't say IB students have the upper hand over other students

    Hey lina this video really helped me alot and i really want to get in UBC but as you mentioned in last part of the video that try not to mention anything about your mental health because they don't wanna deal with anything going on campus because of that issue.. but what if the answers to the questions they ask like what we learned and experience depends on how we overcome anxiety and depression issues and made a us better person. So how to answer if such questions are asked which are mostly realted to our mental heath

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому +2

      Glad to hear it helped! Honestly, it's just something I've heard, so like I said in the video I'm not 100% sure it's true, but just figured its a better safe than sorry sort of situation. The questions are fairly generic, so there's not going to be a question that is "mostly related to our mental health" like you said - it's just up to you if that's what you want to answer with. I think it really depends on what way you frame it. One of my friends spoke about his anxiety (in a similar way in which you're saying), he had a 90% average, played sports, did school leadership, etc, and he didn't get in. I think again, it's up to you whether you want to take the risk - because I'm not sure its totally true!

    Hey Lina! Awesome video. Was just wondering if you can tell me more about the provincial marks part. You said that they only look at the Provincial Exam mark? Are you 100% sure? Because I got admitted to BCOM and I did really bad on my math provincial mark, is that going to affect me? And also, can you tell me more about getting your application revoked? Has it happened before? And if so, what happened after that?

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      They don't only look at the provincial exam mark- but it does matter to an incredible extent. If you already got into BCOM they likely took a look at your math provincial mark already and decided it was good enough.... unless you took the exam late and they haven't received the grade yet. I have heard of people getting their application revoked due to a poor English provincial grade (since sometimes those come in after they've been admitted to UBC) but it's not very likely.

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  7 років тому

      It's optional for a reason!! If you didn't fill it out, it's not an issue, so don't feel anxious :) :) I was just saying it's good to give them as much information as you can (but not necessary)- some people write in circumstances that may have caused their grades to be low, (e.g. parents getting divorced while in high school), so admissions can take that into consideration (and you know what I wrote). Your sister and her friends are right, you can obviously leave it blank, and clearly they got in that way :) so no need to worry! best of luck!

      Hey there! This link will help you figure out what those degree specific requirements are if you're an international student: you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/international-highschools-requirements/#basic just select your country from the drop down menu and you'll be able to se what they need from you. If you're a Canadian student the link is in the description of this video! I can't quite remember how I went about submitting my transcript but I believe I submitted all my subjects and then they select the ones they actually need (e.g. things like drama class was not considered into overall average) - but again, my memory is a bit shaky on that so maybe contacting admissions will answer your question better: you.ubc.ca/contact-us/ . Hi!! I'm not sure about the SAT or the TOEFL because as a Canadian student I don't have to take either. I would post on reddit.com/r/ubc and you'll be able to get a better answer to your question there!! As for workload I would just say it's a lot more spaced out than high school was for me, but this leads to more content and heavier content tests/projects. I would say it's more stressful than high school but if you put time and effort it shouldn't be that much harder. About the requirements, it depends what you program you're wanting to go into! I'm guessing you're an international student because your mention of the SAT's, so this link will be helpful in figuring out what requirements you need for the program you're applying to: you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/international-highschools-requirements/#basic

      Hey! I've personally really liked my faculty. Not so much in first year because the classes were massive and it was hard to feel a sense of belonging, but as you go on classes get smaller and you start to see familiar faces in classes and get a feel for the community. I'm in psychology and there's also tons of psychology events to get to know your faculty- and most of my professors have been amazing. There's also a lot of events not pertaining to UBC Arts, but just for students in general that can give you a great campus experience- ultimately, it's just about how much you get involved. In terms of academics, I can't really answer your question because there's multiple programs at UBC. If I was answering based on my program (Psychology), I would say it is worth it - it's among the Top 10 in the WORLD. Lol about your first impression being gloomy- I'm guessing it was a cloudy/rainy day, that feeling is mostly a Vancouver thing if you're asking me (it rains a lot!), but you kinda get used to it.

    Hi, thanks for making the video.
    By the way, as you know applicants have two degree or program choices. For example I chose Bachelor of Science as choice # 1 and Applied Science as choice # 2. if I inform UBC to evaluate my application for my 2nd choice as here (Applied Science), does that mean they wont assess my application for my 1st choice if I dont get accepted for my second choice? Oh, is there any deadline for informing UBC to assess our 2nd choice of degree?

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      You pick your two choices and UBC looks at your application for choice #1 first- if it does not accept you for your first choice of program, it'll reassess your application to see if they will accept you for choice #2! So for example, if you're not accepted into the Bachelor of Science program they will look at your application again to see if they want to accept you for Applied Sciences. They do this automatically

    • @khanjan290
      @khanjan290 6 років тому

      ok, thanks I got that. But I wanted to know if I inform UBC to assess my application for my 2nd choice, and UBC doesnt accept me for my 2nd choice after the assessment, will UBC admission officials stop there and wont assess my application for my 1st choice?

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      You don't have to inform UBC to assess your application for your 2nd choice- they do that automatically if you don't get in for your 1st choice. If they don't accept you for your 2nd choice, they've already looked at your application for both choices and it means you're not accepted for either

    • @khanjan290
      @khanjan290 6 років тому

      I am so sorry for not making myself clear enough. I know they fist evaluate our applications for the 1st choice and if accepted they wont look at the 2nd choice. If not accepted, UBC will assess us on the 2nd choice. I meant that can I ask UBC to assess my application for the 2nd choice first instead of my 1st choice? in other words, can applicants change the order of their program choice after submitting their applications? If they can, in this case ,will UBC assess us for both choices too?

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      Ah I see what you mean now. I don't believe you can swap your choices once you've submitted your application. I would contact admissions here: you.ubc.ca/contact-us/ to see if something can be done about that. If they did allow you to swap choices, that is your 2nd choices becomes your 1st, and your 1st choice becomes your 2nd- the same thing would apply as to how they asses them (that is they would look at your application for 1st choice and if they don't accept you for that, then they'll move on to the 2nd choice. UBC will only asses both choices if they don't accept you for the 1st.

    Hey! Thanks for the video.

      Im majoring in Psychology and minoring in Business.... So I'm not really sure I can help you out with the specifics of the Computer Science Program but I did take one computer science course and while it really wasn't for me, the professor was great and the program as a whole seems very well put together. I would go on reddit.com/r/UBC and leave your question there!

    Your video is very helpful! I’m applying by the end of the month to UBC.
    I have a question! Do I have to submit all the documents (grades, proof of language level - I’m an international student -, letters of reference etc) at the same time? Or can I start my application and go adding the docs as time goes by and then finish it all by Dec 1?
    Pls help me with this one!!

    • @lina.lecompte

      You can add the docs as time goes by! Basically you can save your application and continue adding to it or editing it until the deadline :)

    Hi Lina, I just wanted to ask what programme you are studying at UBC? I plan on doing the B + MM Dual Degree so I was wondering if there were any tips that you could help with!

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  7 років тому

      Hi! I'm majoring in psychology with a minor in commerce, so quite different from the BMM. I believe for the BMM you have to do a little video, you can find a few examples online (I've seen a few here on UA-cam that should be able to give you an idea of what the video is supposed to look like). Overall, remember to demonstrate why you're a qualified applicant for the program- hardworking, leadership, organized, committed, etc. etc. Sorry I'm not able to give you a better answer because I don't know a lot about their application process but best of luck!

    hey all the info is so useful. Thanks
    I just want to knw like you said that students apply in safety schools as well and if they don't get in their desired university then they go in these safely colleges only and then transfer later on. so how this transfer process work like if they are not getting admission initially then how they get admission after getting in other college.
    It would be great if you could share inf on this( for an international student) :)

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      Hi! so you would just apply as a transfer student - the process would be a little different as you would need to send your grades from the university you're transferring from, but pretty sure you would still have to do the personal profile and some aspects of the application would be the same. I obviously don't have too much experience with this so you can always ask on reddit.com/r/UBC

That moment was so shocking and surprising, as I logged into the UBC account and saw that I am accepted to UBCO for Bach. in Management ...!

    My daughter failed her first term of grade 11. How does that change the grand scheme of getting into UBC and applying for scholarships?

    • @marziaowens
      @marziaowens 6 років тому

      UBC requires you to report your final Gr11 marks and first term Gr12 marks. Ideally, 1st term is worth a lot less than 2nd/3rd so she has a chance to make up for it! If she's able to significantly boost her mark by the end of Gr11, she'll get a higher average by then. Shouldn't worry as much cause it's all based on FINAL gr11 marks.
      As for scholarships, I'm not sure if her grades are sufficient enough for academic-centric requirements at this time. However, there's other scholarships that focus on (club) involvement, community service, essay writing, and even quick surveys!
      check out: scholarshipscanada and bcscholarships online!

    • @lina.lecompte
      @lina.lecompte  6 років тому

      mhmmm I wouldn't say that your 1st term is worth a lot less. It also depends if the school works by terms or year round courses (that is, some schools have certain classes term 1 and others in term 2, and other schools do all classes throughout the year). If the case is that the classes are throughout the year, then yes - she should be able to boost her mark and get a higher average by then, but it's going to be hard work to reach the competitive grades required! With that being said - grade 12 marks are also pretty important so again, she's got a chance to make it up. As airyka said for scholarships the grades probably won't be enough for academic ones, but there's scholarships for community service, essay writing, even video making - check out the websites she mentioned and yconic!

    Hey I just had a few questions. Its quite difficult to get 85% here in the 11th grade but I am trying my best. What if I don't get in 90s? Do I still have a chance?
    I can get 90+ in my 12th grade, so will that do?

      where do you live? im in alberta and kind of in the same boat... school here i've heard is harder than in other provinces and my average is around 86% which is considered academic excellence so i don't know if i can compare my grades to students outside of alberta
