BTS has six Billboard # 1 albums, Coldplay has 4 Maroon 5 has 2 and 1D has 3. In 2020, and 20221 they were the biggest recording artists in the world beating the likes of TSwifts, Drake and Ed Sheeran on the IFPI chart. In 2022 they were number 2 even though they were on hiatus for 6 months of it. 1D topped the chart once, M5, and Coldplay have never ranked higher than 4th. The rest have never ranked at all.

When it comes to just pure records and achievements, kpop groups haven't reached 1/10th of where bts is at.
The reason is the music and their career. BTS focus on making good music that lasts forever.
Literally every song they have released from title tracks to old 2013 b-sides all of their songs are well known among fans.
So my advice if you wanna explore bts is, dive straight into the albums.... Its a fucking masterpiece of a discography.

68 yr old fan here of BTS. Not just young kids appreciate the group.
BTS owns 53% of the entire K Pop market. All the 100s of other groups make up the balance. Obviously Black Pink is part of the rest. BP does have a strong Western following and a devoted fan base. But on a scale of magnitude there is little comparatively that can be said other than they are a distant second. That's not a knock on their work. K Pop for the most part prior to BTS was essentially an East Asian phenomenon. So as doors opened BP wisely figured out early how to get through them. It just speaks to BTS's outsized impact on the Western music market and BP's commercial marketing wisdom to see an opportunity and take it.
Bts is the most awarded group in history and of all time with around 1050 awards. 4th overall only bested by 1) MJ, 2) adele & 3) Taylor Swift.
BTS is bigger than the KPOP industry. You can't even compare BTS' achievements to any other kpoo group. They are on another level.

BTS is the biggest band in the world. They have been around 10yrs. They are more a vocal group now then a boy band or part of Kpop. They bring in 4+ Billion into the Korean GDP. They have spoken at the United Nations 3 times. Been to the White House. Have several Korea cultural awards from the Korean government. They are presidential envoys and have diplomatic passports. They do humanitary work as well and Army helps with that.
BTS started a movement with their love yourself. They connect with their fans through live chats. Their love for Army shows. They are humble, down to Earth. Their actions show who they are.
Nothing wrong with Blackpink or other kpop artists, but BTS surpassed them long time ago in many ways - awards, music content, size of fandom, contrbutions to korean economy and so on.
Army transcends age, race and gender. I'm in my 50s and love these 7 young men. Its not just their music, it's what they stand for and who they are that have brought them to where they are through the music.

They are bigger than kpop. They are bigger than any other kpop act and they are even the biggest band in the world. They aren't your normal type of boyband. They are incredible artists who also produce and write their own songs. Watch Taylor's guide to BTS members to know more about them.
Comparing Blackpink to BTS is like comparing the Grand Teton to Mount Everest. I mean no shade or disrespect to BP, but BTS are in an entirely different league, with 10 years of incredible music under their belts. I highly recommend checking them out more, as there’s PLENTY for you to enjoy that isn’t just pop! 💜
This is not to shade on BP. BUT BTS and BP are not even mentioned in the same conversation. BP is good. But BTS is so much more in terms of musicality, lyrics, diversity of genres, number of songs output (group and individually), and music awards (internationally and domestically), not even mentioning ticket and album sells. BTS's performances are a must see, the best in the industry. Their concert tickets are also very hard to get, like Taylor Swift's. There were 2 members who held concerts in the past year or so, j-hope at Lollapalooza (sold out) and Suga's world tour with D-Day (24 concerts sold out).
Currently, BTS are on a break due to S. Korea's mandatory military service. 2 members are in service. Rest will be going soon. But each member have released solo projects. Check out j-hope's album Jack in the Box, Jin's single Astronaut, RM's album Indigo, Jimin's album FACE, Suga's album D-day, Jungkook's single Seven (more to come), and V's singles Love Me Again and Rainy Day (his new album is dropping on 9/8/23). We ARMY (fans of BTS) are anticipating the whole group to come back in 2025.

I only started listening to BTS a few months ago because I always thought they weren't going to be for me but I fell in love with them instantly. They're not like any group you've ever seen they literally do everything and every genre just pure talent and their lyrics are always meaningful and inspiring. Not to mention that they're genuinely good people who truly care about their fans and about each other.
They're also hilarious just full time comedians there's never a dull moment with them you're in for a treat

BTS is way bigger. That’s not a knock to BP it’s just facts. They’ve also been around a lot longer and have a bigger catalog of music. BP are good and they make catchy songs but there’s not much substance there and that’s coming from someone who likes BP. You should check out the guide for BTS. It shows you where they come from, what they stand for and who they are as a group/individuals. BTS did start off as a HipHop group. The rap line (RM, JHope and Suga) are amazing and are the main producers/writers/composers of the group. But all the members lend a hand in that department. The vocal line (Jin, Jimin, V and Jungkook) have the most beautiful, stable and unique voices in the music industry as a whole. Same for the rap line. Their talent goes beyond the kpop industry. Each member has their own style of singing/rapping which helps create the sound that we have grown to know and love as BTS.
Music is a language in itself. It doesn’t matter if you speak the language or not. They transcends all nationalities, races, genders, sexual orientation, etc. They are just great human beings. Make sure to look at funny compilations of them too. You’ll get to see their personalities. Welcome and enjoy the ride 💜

BTS debuted as a HIP HOP IDOL group in June 2013, in South Korea, from a small independent label. They grew organically, and didn't have an easy time, they actually had it rough. If it wasn't for BTS breaking into the Western market, mainly USA, and becoming mainstream, KPOP would still be considered a Niche market, and you wouldn't know who Blackpink is. I started with Blackpink because my daughter introduced me, but when I found BTS, I was intrigued, and then when I checked out their Korean music, their lyrics and message I resonated with. I discovered they are amazing humans that use their platform to spread positive messages to the world. And I discovered this incredible ARMY community and had to be a part of it. The guys are amazingly talented, and introspective. They also have hype music, but it's always intentional what they say. They do have 3 fully English songs that they released during the pandemic to uplift ARMY's and the world. I can recommend a medley that will show you their diversity. They don't hold any genre boundaries, and they are known for crossing and fusing genre's.
The guys are very versatile and have mastered their skills. Their discography is over 350 songs and 19 album, and the rappers have been releasing solo mixtapes and vocalist solo songs since the early days, and they are all associate members of KOMCA, which means they all have copyrights with their music, the 3 rappers being the main songwriters of the group are full members since 2020, even SUGA has won awards for his producing. Blackpink debuted in 2016, and they have two studio albums, and some singles. They don't have the same creative freedom and songwriting and producing skills that BTS has. Blackpink has the Black Label run by Teddy, and he is their songwriter and producer. That's very common in KPOP. They are the most popular girl group in the world, but BTS are the top group in the world. I like Blackpink, but you are comparing apples to oranges. Also, all seven of the BTS members are releasing solo projects right now, because they are on a group break to complete their mandatory military service. They will be coming back in 2025, when they have finished their service. Here is that medley I promised.

There are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. 2 of the rappers were originally underground rappers. The have collabs with Wale, Juice World, Nas x, JCole and many more. The youngest just released a solo “seven” with Latto. They debuted in 2013 as a hip hop group under the idol training system.
If you let us know what type of music you like we can direct you. Their music as a group, subunit, or solo is always amazingly well constructed produced. I have yet to find a song that I didn’t like.

There's 3 rappers (RM, Suga & J-Hope) and 4 vocalists (Jin, Jimin, V & Jungkook). It's rather hard to squeeze all 7 into a song, but they have solo songs as BTS and as solo artists. They emphasize either the rap line or vocal line depending on the song, and also have songs that only include the rap line or vocal line. All the members have their opportunity to shine, which is great 💜

BTS is a globally respected and beloved group with a longer history and a larger discography, who write their own material and produce their own and others' songs. Nothing against BlackPink. They're fine. But BTS are celebrating their 10-year anniversary this year and are considered one of the top artists in the world. They have received awards from the South Korean president, spoken at the United Nations, and been invited to the White House to speak about Asian hate. They are responsible for contributing 5 billion a year to the South Korean economy. Also, they are the only Koreans to have held number one spots with their solo releases on Billboard. Jimin did it first a few months ago, now Jung Kook has been there for five weeks with "Seven", his solo song. All the guys are releasing solo material before they enter the Korean military for mandatory service. They return as a group in 2025.
There is no point of comparison between BTS and Blakpink, bts are complete artists who are involved in the composition and production of their music and there are many more reasons why they are the best group in the world.

In terms of popularity, you can think of Blackpink like Nickelback and BTS like The Beatles. Both popular and commercial successes, but different scales. BTS has had much more global success compared to Blackpink. BTS are also writers and producers, while Blackpink do not write or produce their own music (but are excellent performers and singers).

So BTS is a world I entered about a year ago and America just does NOT KNOW how great they are! Not only did they beat the odds in Korea, but they have beat and surpassed every marker in the music industry worldwide! Except the Grammys - and we all know the Grammys are tied to US music money. Boys from Korea are going to have a hard time getting that award. But they don't NEED it. They have every other award out there AND millions and millions of adoring fans. They have achieved fame and fortune and respect. Around the time of the pandemic they decided they wanted more American notoriety and respect, so they released 3 very pop-oriented and English lyric songs: Butter, Dynamite and Permission to Dance. These are the more simple, dancey, cute songs of theirs. Don't get me wrong, I love these songs and so do millions of Americans. These songs were their ticket into the American music scene. But these songs are not indicative of their overall talent and artistry. Each one of the 7 members can dance, sing, and rap. Many of them write the lyrics, the music, produce, choreograph, mix and video. Their albums all have interlocking threads of storyline and complex, deep lyrics. They have tackled many ground-breaking (for Korea and somewhat for the world) topics of mental health, loneliness, youth, societal issues, self-love and individualism. If you like ballads, they excel at them. If you like rock, they jam out. If you like rap, 3 of the members rap with the best in the world. If you like EDM/dance, they are all so talented. Their concerts are an event of a lifetime. They sing and dance and talk to their fans for 2.5 hours! They train for this by singing while exercising on a treadmill! Since the whole group took a break last fall for solo projects and mandatory military enlistment, each member has released solo songs/albums that have ALL charted big. I think they are the only band EVER to have all members have a solo song in the Hot 100. One of their rappers, AgustD (also known as Suga), sold out his world tour this past summer BEFORE his album officially released! The tour was a blockbuster and critically acclaimed. I highly recommend his work (esp. Dachwita, Haegeum, Amygdala and Huh?!). You might also like J-Hope's solo earlier this year "On the Street" collab. with J-Cole, his personal idol. For pure pop excitement, JK released his solo hit last month "Seven". And just last week V released 2 of his jazzy ballads that are going big - "Love Me Again" and "Rainy Days". There is really no comparison between Blackpink and BTS. BTS is amazing - they write and produce their own music. They have a lot of freedom at their agency that a lot of groups don't have. In return, they've taken Kpop to places its never been, AMAs, Billboard, Grammys, the White House. They are much more than a boy band or even a Kpop band.
BTS does so many types of music - Hip Hop, Dance, Pop - I can't name them all. 7 members might seem like a lot, but not so much in Kpop. They are 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. Right now they are all doing solo work because of their military enlistments. It's amazing if you listen to their solo work you'd never imagine they were a group!

If you were to combine the biggest k-pop groups into one, it still couldn't compare to BTS. They're truly special.

BlackPink seems like a much bigger deal than they actually are because of massive media deals. That's not hate on BP, that is just a fact. Their company has done a lot to push them out there, get them on magazine covers and at shows and stuff. But they are just not the artsits that BTS are. Their stage presence and performance skills are nothing compared to BTS. They have made actually very little music comparatively and have almost no creative freedom. They are more a product than a band and do more product endoresements than music and performance.
BTS eclipses BP utterly in sales, popularity, aristry, number of songs and albums and net worth. When people say BTS are bigger than all of K-Pop combined, that is not hyperbole. On a pie chart for the metrics I mentioned above, all other groups equal less than half of the pie and BTS makes up the rest. Their company, which they built from the ground up, is also now worth more than the previous three largest K-Pop labels combined.
In defense of BP, it's not really their fault what their label made of them, nor is it really fair to hold them up for comparison to BTS on artistry. BTS sets an impossibly high standard. They are God tier artists. We are not likely to see their like again in our lifetimes. They really are something different. And on that pie chart of K-Pop, where BTS is the bigger piece of the pie than they rest of the industry combined, on the side with all the rest of the industry, BP has the biggest slice of that pie.
In fact, I think it's fair to say BP is the biggest thing in K-Pop because BTS have transcended the industry, and everyone knows it. They are just the biggest group in the world. Period. And as soloists they are among the biggest artists in the world as well. Yoongi, one of the rappers who goes by Suga or Agusta D in solo work, just completed a solo world tour that was the biggest and most lucrative tour, fastest and biggest selling album and biggest and most lucrative single shows for a rapper in global history.

Just so you understand. This is just a quick video that they threw together during Covid to make fans happy. This song and Dynamite are in full English. BTS do all genres. You need to check out the full catalog. They are on a whole other level from Black Pink no shade being thrown. They have 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. Four are considered the dance line although all dance. They sing live and dance so you have to check out their live performances. Their music videos have English subtitles so you can understand the Korean lyrics. They have been together for 10 years and are doing solo work as each member will be completing their mandatory military service. They won’t be back live as a group until 2025. Fans known as Army are anxiously waiting. Depending on what you like Army will recommend the right songs to check out.

BTS is a group of extremely humble and valuable young men who have worked hard for ten years and made a name for themselves in the world. They write lyrics that give hope to young people and motivate them. If you listen to their other songs, you will understand. As a 44 year old Army, I enjoy listening to them very much. .

But it was years after Gangnam Style before I ever heard another kpop song. Heck I know people who til this day didn't know Gangnam Style was a kpop song. I don't think he started some big kpop wave because of Gangnam Style, to most people he was/is a 1 hit wonder. PSY has even stated that he's proud BTS has been able to accomplish something he couldn't which was longevity. I know BTS has said other artists have paved the way for them and that's fine. But I really didn't see big kpop boom worldwide until BTS came along.

Most are very deep, smart and riddled with fantastic wordplay. The music they make are very eclectic. They give it their all when they perform, even when they’re sick. They make sure you get your money’s worth when you go to their sold out concerts. Watch their practice videos, too. 😊
