In this lesson we look at three great lesser know blues guitarists. Hollywood Fats, Ronnie Earl, and Junior Watson.
I demonstrate and breakdown solos from each player over an uptempo shuffle in the key of A.
Here are link to the solos covered in this lesson:
• Hollywood Fats - Rock ...
• Ronnie Earl - T-Bone B...
• Junior Watson (USA), B...

I love how there isn't any fast, random scale runs. Every single note has meaning. Impeccable tone as well.
yes, fantastic phrasing, so musical..
Beautiful lines Jack! Maybe young guitar players are not familiar with T-Bone Walker or Hollywood Fats!
Thank you Tomo! That means a lot to me!
Acshually SRV is the only blues guitarist to have ever existed.
Ok jokes aside, people should really give t-bone a listen, great player and quite the frontman too.
Or the great Junior Watson...
@@elpolitemexa2272Personally, I think Stevie Ray Vaughan was extremely over-rated. All the players mentioned in the comment section are much better.
True, and they need to be familiar with T-Bone and Hollywood.
love the Fat's quote. Nicely played. Also great that you mentioned all those wonderful players : Watson, Fats , Ronnie-- and guys like Alex Schultz, Rick Holmstrom also. Guys that play with subtlety and finesse . Blues can sometimes be very much in the wailing guitars solo , which is fine for some , but slightly tedious to others. Like me. Thank you for this much needed lesson.
Thank you!
Wonderful. I’m all over the Junior Watson lesson (🙌🏻🙌🏻) and will come back for the other two. :-).
Same here!
Love jump blues its the uptown jazzy cousin of the blues. Would love to see a lesson on how to play rythym in this style using interesting more jazzy chord extensions
there are tons of videos from tommy harkenrider covering this subject from many different angles, go check him out :) cheers brother!
BB uses that Hollywood Fats chromatic lick a couple times in Paulys Birthday Boogie, one of my favorite jams. Great lesson thank you!
Fantastic lesson! Not too many people know about Hollywood Fats who tragically died at a young age. Guys like Junior Watson and Ronnie Earl are also masters of Jump Blues. Chris ‘Kid’ Anderson is also keeping this genre alive out here on the West Coast 😃
Absolutely!
Rusty Zinn and Alex Schultz too.
In Chicago we have Dave Specter and Joel Patterson. And, of course, we can't ignore Rhode Island's great Duke Robillard!
And Kid Ramos.
Great stuff once again! For more like this don't forget Little Charlie Baty. He has some cool, old lessons on youtube in this style.
Little Charlie's solo in Eyes Like a Cat 💪💥
Little Charlie was soooo good. RIP 😢
Little Charlie doing Wildcattin' on Captured Live. A jump blues course in 16 choruses!
Brilliant playing and phrasing!! Love these videos 🤘
You are smooth as silk man!! Love your playing , been seeing you , Guthrie, Josh and Kirk playing together lately ! Those are some of my favorite players ! And your style is killer !
Hi. Thank you for all your Blues Guitar lessons, specially this Jump Blues lesson, you covered also
my Jump Blues guitar heroes, really cool. I look forward to see more lessons of this blues genre,
love this style. Nice guitar and good sound too. Greetings from Finland.
Such stellar playing, Jack. I spent a lot of time learning this solo but I can't (yet) make it jump like you do! A tip of the hat, Sir.
Brilliant stuff, Jack! Love how patient you are in your style. Every note in it's perfect time!
Thank you!
Yes, yes please more of the same. I love this style Jack and your teaching and playing is outstanding. I love Alex Schultz with William Clarke, Jr. Watson seem a little bit out of my reach playing wise, but I could listen to him all day. Any Jump Blues lesson would be great! Thank You Jack!
Check out Alex with Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers live at BB Kings
great insight, as usual! thank you!
Very cool lesson, thank you
Outstanding lesson. Well explained and enough material for weeks of learning. Thank-you very much.
Thank you Jack for meat and potatos down to earth lesson. Great lines and instruction!
Awesome playing and lesson once again Jack, such tasteful phrasing
Thank you!
Love the type of content your putting out, not to mention the great playing to back it up!
I appreciate that!
Oh Man... It's so good to hear those licks again... I used to be on the road, and was able to follow so many of my heroes like Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, Anson Funderburgh, Little Charlie Baty, Jimmie Vaughn. I am retired now and also moved so far away from where I played this music. It's sad... But I love hearing you playing it.
Great Job Jack👍very cool stuff, definitely would love to see more of this swing jump blues and all of your other Blues lessons are excellent also well ✌🏼
Thanks! Will do!
Just a fantastic and articulate analysis of voice leading in this Jump Style Blues. Totally inspiring.
Glad you think so!
Love jump blues-just so fun! Also love more direct solos or recordings I don't know a lot of this style so the specifics help!
What's more fun than jump blues? Eric Clapton playing jump blues on a 335 is absolute joy! Great lesson, Jack!
Couldn't agree more!
Brother you are a phenomenal teacher. The way you explain concepts here, on your Patreon, and in your TrueFire course could not be any better. Appreciate you! 🙏
Thank you Charlie!
Great lesson Jack. I love your approach to teaching and the way how you explain things. Your Truefire course "Shades of Blues" is true gem.
Thank you!!
Love your playing Jack! I’m working on your TrueFire course right now. Great stuff!
Awesome! Thanks Spencer!
Great musical explanation for those that know a little theory!! Thanks!
THANK YOU for highlighting these guys! I couldn’t name them, but have felt their fingerprints for years. Thanks for turning me on to them. Glad that you are breaking down their licks, and phrases! Great LICKS! So 😎
My pleasure!
Great lesson. Thanks Jack!!
I like how your picking hand moves to different spots on the guitar. Nice work.
Thanks a lot!
My favorite genre. More please.
Thanks again Jack. Love your playing and how intentional every note you play is not wasted. Love the jump blues video and your last one on soul rhythm. Waiting for jazz blues video on Grant Green, Wes, Kenny Burrell and others. Ever since I have been follilowing your videos and Truefire course I have noticed a marked improvement in my lines. Your instruction on focusing on positions on the neck and going around the I IV V while playing flat sevens has helped me generate some new lines and phrases that I never would have thought if without your instruction. Thanks for all you do.
Awesome man! Glad to hear it!
I love Jump Blues and was especially happy to see 3 guitarists here who mean so much to me and from whom I learned from by listening to their CD's. I've seen Ronnie Earl many times throughout the years, and Hollywood Fats blows me away ( I was delighted to hear you play a sample of his which I had taught myself before). I'm listening to a lot of of Jr. Watson, who I'm glad you also featured. Another great one to be heard is Duke Robillard who I will get to see at the end of March. And of course Little Charley Baty (RIP) was a great jump blues guitarist, too. Thanks for the great lesson! 😃
Your guitar sound is killing me every time. Love it! Thanks for your tuts, I'm an addicted fan!
Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time
Wow man, I really love your playing.
As fast as my credcard are up and running ,i vil start patreon. Your lessons are just spot on for me to get the rust off my strings ! I will put much time and effort in my playing forward.
Jack, I've been waiting for this lesson.. You picked three of my favorite guitar players along with Alex Shultz... "You are the Bob Ross of music teachers" Your calm attitude is refreshing and your teaching style is impeccable!!! Please do more of the Jump Blues Style lessons. Maybe throwing in some minor and diminished runs and explanations... Thanks so much for what you do!
Cool! I'll work on it
Bob had the hair! Jack's got the cap
Cool sounding stuff!
absolutly enjoyed every second of the video. Thank you Jack :))
Awesome, thank you!
Such a great lesson. This old dog learned a bunch of new tricks. It’s so much the timing
Hit like after 5 seconds awesome tone!!
Amazing technique!
Really nice!
I liked it instantly, great stuff! Thank you man!
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks Jack, this was great, and all three 12-bars that you explained are sweet, smooth, melodic, and rocking! I hope you'll do another one of these, and include some solos of (in my opinion) the vastly under-known and under-appreciated Duke Robillard! I find most every note and line he's played in his long career to be expressive and moving!
great lesson
Great lesson thank you
Some very cool licks here Jack, played very smoothly
Thank John!
Glad I found you!!
Outstanding!!!
thank you. great stuff.
Great lesson..
Jack is a smooth operator…😎
Man, that's some real tasty playing! Nice one!
Thanks a lot!
Excellent.
Really cool thank you!!
Luv the jump stuff, especially the chromatic moves, tks
Love your stuff, Jack! Caught GT at The Underdog Lounge, last month.. wish you could have been there! 👍🎸✌️😎
Awesome! GT is the best!
Cool, enjoyed it.
Thanks!
Man I love how you play… thank you for putting this info out there…
Glad you enjoy it!
You’re the best bro! ⚡️
Appreciate that
Great timing!
Thanks!
love it!
Dude, that's killing me. Great stuff! Thanks so much!
Thanks!
G’day Jack!
Awesome lessons mate! New here (Thanks Brett)
Merry Christmas mate
👍🇦🇺
Happy holidays!
Awesome lesson thank you
Glad you liked it!
You remind me of my Mom's cooking - everything soooooo tasty! What an excellent lesson. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for watching
How come it took me a year to find this one, Jack?? I'm all over this this weekend!!
Tremendous. Thanks
Great .... quelle classe .... thank you to share
Beutiful clean & crisp 👌
Looooooove your videos! Where have you been all my life?
Love jump blues
There is a clip of Junior Watson playing in Norman rare guitars. He is a very unique player !!
Never ever heard anyone that sounds like him.
Tiny Grimes
@@michaelreilly3000 Jr. definitely has that Tiny Grimes influence along with Bill Jennings.
This feels like one step ahead of the straight up blues to a step behind jazz. A kind of bridge maybe??? Very cool. Thanks Jack
Absolutely!
Loved the video.. tons of T-bone influence in all those players, especially Ronnie Earl. Any update on the video of developing the rhythm aspect of your lead playing? Maybe looking at one particular phrase and how it can be altered rhythmically to fit over a shuffle, funk, slow blues, etc? It was well receive the last time I commented.. would love to see you talk about it!
Cool! I will have to think on it
Hollywood Fats has two albums The HollyWood Blue Flames - Deep in America (extremely fast picking on Nit Wit) and Hollywood Fats and The Paladins some great jump blues on those and there are some UA-cam videos with James Harmen can't miss those
He played on Harman's Those Dangerous Gentlemens, Strictly Live in '85 and Extra Napkins. Played with Rod Piazza, Smokey Wilson and Jonh Lee Hooker too.
Three all time great guitarists in one vid! Great playing and explaining! Thank you.
I agree!
Jack: This lesson is at least as fine as any on your equally great TrueFire course!! I find myself frequently stopping the ideas to absorb best I can. I really love this style as I view it as upbeat blues/jazz with rock influences and just fun good time guitar playing! Brian Setzer had the right idea decades ago! You should consider teaming up with another TrueFire huge fan of this great style..........David Black. You two would really compliment each other for hours! Jim C.
Thanks Jim! Really appreciate it
I'm getting your TrueFire course and I"m not even waiting until its onsale.
Thank you!!
Every time I see you've posted a brand new video, I turn into a four year old on Christmas morning.
So, um, thanks Santa! ;)
Thanks Ken!
Hi Jack,
Great lesson on the Jump Blues, one of my favourite styles to play on! All 3 solo's are excellent!
I don't know how to contact you but wanted to ask you if I joined your patreon site would the
solo's include music notation along with tabs as I read quite well, and really don't want tab...
Thanks, keep up the great work!
Allen,
Canada
This is the forgotten Jump blues, based off the relative Major b5 scale. Add in the Min7b5 on the root for minor flavor.
Man! I noticed that you have very long fingers! Lucky you!😀
Hollywood Fats played with James Harman too. Kid Ramos also played with James Harman.
Excellent playing. What make of guitar it that?
What an awesome lesson and surprise to see @TomoFujitaMusic and @JackRuch on the same page! 👍🎶🎸
Dig it!
Loved the playing, loved the selections. Only wish would be to call the key of the tune so that when you talked about going “to the 6th” or “the third” it would be easier to jump to those. Not a huge thing cuz we can eventually grab it by ear. Thanks for even putting it up though.
I didn’t like it, I LOVED it! Lol, it’s hard to go back and work through your older content when you keep distracting me with more greatness.
Thanks Drew!
For those that aren't familiar with Duke Robillard, he's about as good as it gets when it comes to this style. Ronnie Earl replaced Duke when he left Roomful of Blues. Well put together lesson ~!~
Thanks Rich!
Love junior Watson. Should check out kid Anderson if you haven't heard him
Could you show some rhythm chops that might go well behind each of those examples? That would be awesome…. Thanks
Wow
Todays Jump Bluesman Duke Robillard.
Sweeeeeet !!
