  • The Micro Spey is a small Spey style fly intended to be fished for trout but would also work great for steelhead and bass. Spey fishing is new to me but I'm really enjoying it and I love the beauty of the finished flies. Also for me I love to swing flies, it gets me back to my fly tying roots. It may look like an intricate fly that is difficult to tie but it's actually very easy with some basic fly tying techniques. If you would like to give this fly a try and need the materials to tie it you can go to our website www.holsingersflyshop.com or click on the links below for the materials.

Since tying some of these up a few weeks back I've caught white bass, largemouth bass, sunfish, wild brown and wild rainbow trout. Totally a confidence fly for me! I've tied them as small as a #10 owner all the way up to a #4 octopus. Thanks for a great fly!

Hi from Rolla Missouri 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
Haven't seen anything as good for Bass or walleye fishing. I've been working on these since I was a kid. In white or black -yellow extremely effective for hybrids or white bass & on all panfish. I've caught most all the fish in the river's and lakes in MO and Kansas.. This'll do it all. I wrap on wire at the front of the fly for weight, sometimes copper or lead. Usually I Rolla a steel roller over the wire before putting on the shanks. I use Xmas decorations bulbs hooks or paper clips for the shanks. They last for a while and look pretty good hanging out on a tree 🌴. Thanks for your time and knowledge I appreciate and love your message.good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave.

Thanks very much for your comment. I need to start swinging them more for bass. I love them for steelhead. No doubt about it when a steelhead hits them, the usually crush them. I usually use a steel leader used for Marlin fishing which I cut and bend with a pair of jewelry pliers you can pick up in the craft section at Walmart.

Looks buggy! I love the colors with just enough flash. I will definitely be tying a few up for steelhead fishing. Thanks.

Thanks. I've been tying a few of these lately getting ready for steelhead season. I love using pheasant, especially hen pheasants for wet fly hackle.

Thanks for the comment. I love tying these style of streamers. I just think they look awesome. I had a lot of fun swinging them for chrome last fall. I can’t wait to get back after them again this year.

I have swung them for smallmouth and they do work. I love these style of flies because they look so cool when they are done and they really aren't that hard to tie

Could you tie this on a single long shank hook, if so, what size?

    • @HolsingersFlyShop
      @HolsingersFlyShop  4 роки тому +2

Deborah Scott yes you could. I just sit down and tied one to make sure I tied it on a Firehole 839 size 6 and tied the same size fly.

I'm in a bit of a pickle.....im going to Erie on the 16th and I've realized all Ive tied are attractors like crystal meth, eggs, estaz eggs, squirmies, one or two steelhead candy, and a few heavy pink nymphs of my own creation. What are some of your go to naturals for the tribs? I would hate to go with just those patterns.

Bob Price I like stone fly imitations a lot up there and some small streamers like white death work well up there. I suggest having smaller flies too or trim down your eggs while your there if the fish aren’t biting. That is usually the first thing I do when fishing gets tough up there drop to a smaller fly and lighter tippet.

Have you tried fishing for suckers?

    • @HolsingersFlyShop

Brian Talbot I haven’t targeted them but have caught them while trout fishing. One stream I fish regularly has some very large fall fish which are a blast to catch.

Before the weather turned here last month I was doing well getting them on zebra midges fishing them as a dry dropper under a caddis.

I just cant get trout to take my wet flies when i swing them. Frustrating because i can catch fish on any other fly.

Nuckin' Futs fish this fly like you would a streamer. A couple tips for swinging wets. Keep your rod tip up and lead your fly through the drift. Keeping your tip up will help with hook sets. Let you drift go the whole way through till it stops below you and then give your rod tip a little twitch you’ll be surprised how that will trigger a bite. Also I don’t fish them all the time, just when conditions are right. Mainly in the spring early summer during the good hatches and when they really work well is when your on the stream and you see trout rising but don’t see the flies. And also I will often fish a wet during a hatch with better results than a dry fly. Lastly mend, mend, mend, you have to manage your fly and keep it the same speed as the current.

Get Davy Wotton's "Wet Fly Ways" DVD. It may be available on Amazon Prime. His techniques are extremely effective and fun to use. Other great resources are Allen McGee's book Fly Fishing Soft Hackles and the 2nd edition of Dave Hughes' book on Wet Flies (make sure it's the 2nd edition). I love to fish wet flies in all seasons.

Bo K I totally agree with you that they can be fished year around. My mentor only fished wet flies and is successful year around. For me though, I have a lot of tools in my belt and will have better luck with different techniques at different times of the year. When the hatches are hot and heavy I’d swing a wet over a dry any day. But if nothing is going on I’m nymphing and catching fish. Which is most of the time. Thanks for sharing those books I will definitely check them out. I like Davy Wotton stuff. And thanks for your input on the subject. I agree but it’s just not my style.
