Getting to live in space is a challenge and an honor only a very few people will ever enjoy (at least in our generation). Astronaut Mike Hopkins is one of those selected few. He spent six months on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2013. And though he was thrilled when he was chosen for a space mission, there was one Person he didn’t want to leave behind: Jesus in the Eucharist.
Hopkins had been received into the Church less than a year before his launch. After a long wait, he was finally able to receive Our Lord at each Mass. Facing the prospect of being off the planet for half a year, he decided he had to find out if Jesus could travel with him. It turns out he could - and he did.
Colonel Hopkins, really loved your talk. After 20 years of marriage to my Catholic husband I converted to the Catholic faith. The Eucharist is what drew me to the Church. I'm retired from the Kennedy Space Center (31 years), so I was very excited to hear your talk. God bless you. 🙏

How did he fulfill Sunday obligations?
He most likely got a dispensation from his pastor or bishop. I think it's wonderful that his bishop let him take Jesus up with him!
I continue to be astonished by Catholic clergy who aren’t concerned with communicants touching consecrated hosts and vessels. 😨 It isn’t clear whether that happened with Col. Hopkins, but the implication is there. 🤔

It isn’t NASA’s responsibility to disqualify astronaut candidates based on their religious restrictions - that responsibility belongs to the candidates themselves.
