What to Do in Parma, Italy in 3 Hours

  • The plan was to take the train from Milan to Parma, spend three hours exploring Parma, and then catch another train to La Spezia. The plan worked PERFECTLY. Click "Show more" to see the 3-hour schedule below.
We booked two one-way regional train tickets (one from Milan to Parma and another from Parma to La Spezia), each at about 11 Euros per person. That allowed us to make our own schedule so we could explore Parma. We had to carry our luggage with us, but fortunately we travel light.
The highlight of the trip (besides Pepen's food, of course) was the Parma Cathedral. The paintings and decorations inside this cathedral are unparalleled. It is one of the most awe inspiring, completely impressive buildings I've ever been in (and I've been in St. Paul's in London, St. Peter's in the Vatican, and most of the other impressive cathedrals of the world).
Here's the schedule: (with video time stamps) And how long we spent there.
2pm - Arrive at Parma train station
2.15pm - Eat at Pepen (0:08) Thirty minutes, depending on how busy it is.
2.45pm - Check out Parma Cathedral (0:41) We spent an hour here.
3.45pm - Monastero San Giovanni (1:33) Fifteen minutes is fine.
4.05pm - Chiesa della Staccata (2:00) Ten minutes.
    4.20pm - Teatro Farnese (2:19) Thirty minutes.
Then you have 30 minutes to eat gelato (2:53), explore (we went to a few parks that weren't very pretty in March so they didn't make the video), and get back to the train station.
If you're staying in La Spezia (hiking Cinque Terre), stay with Marco on Airbnb. His apartment was fantastic and he was a great host.

    Our Gear:
Canon G7X Mark II: amzn.to/2nDh9UH (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: amzn.to/2mMmPrd (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: amzn.to/2n6m92y (fantastic versatile bendy tripod - this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: amzn.to/2n6rPtc (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: amzn.to/2nD6o4F (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

Francesca Ferrari My wife and I are going to your beautiful city in two months for a business trip. We unfortunately do not speak the language.
Would you say your city is English friendly? Thank you for your time.

Hi Todd, I'm not sure if Francesca will see your comment, but I can help answer this question. My wife and I don't speak Italian either (outside of the basic buongiorno, grazie, and prego). We felt like the people we met in Parma spoke less English than in other more popular cities like Milan and Rome, but they all spoke enough English that we could communicate without much difficulty. You'll have a great time there. -Brian

what a great video! i happened upon it while doing "virtual travelling"...like everyone else these days. la spezia is one of my favorite places in italy. we happened upon it quite by accident and i fell in love with it, hoping to return when travel is allowed. the story is actually quite amusing. we were on a cruise and booked a tour to cinque terre from livorno. we thought we were being dropped off at the station in la spezia to travel by train to the cinque terre. no. our driver took us there and this was when i discovered i actually suffer motion sickness when in the back of a van traversing hairpin turns. long story short, we saw una terre and took the train back to la spezia and made arrangements for the driver to pick us up later in the day when our fellow travellers had finished their touring. serendipity. anyway...new subscriber here!

Hi Sheri! Welcome to our little internet family! Glad you found us. Yeah, those roads are no joke if you get motion sickness. Isa gets a little woozy if she tries to look at her phone or read when we drive. Hopefully next time when you go back to La Spezia, you'll get the day pass so you can take the train between each village and explore it more. Such a unique part of the world to experience.

@@PerfectLittlePlanet great idea. we are actually now considering retiring to liguria. we had planned a trip to torino, milano and lago maggiore this past may. now, i have been reconsidering where i really want to explore. thanks again for all the great "stuff" you have here.

That would be amazing! We've never been to Lago Maggiore, but we've been to Lake Como a couple times and I can imagine they're pretty similar. If you're looking to explore some place new, I highly recommend Capri, off the coast of Sorrento, and then the towns along the Amalfi coast.

Where did you put your luggage while being in Parma?

    • @PerfectLittlePlanet
      @PerfectLittlePlanet  8 років тому

We travel light - we each have a duffel bag with our clothes plus a smaller bag for electronics and stuff. We carried everything the whole time. You can see straps on both our shoulders at 0:05 and 0:52 (in the cathedral), and you can see both of Isa's bags at 2:50. We would rather have left our bags in a locker but the Parma train station does not have lockers. :(
