- If your old Mopar points ignition is tired, I highly recommend the Firecore Performance Products Chrysler Electronic Distributor. These are offered for most makes and models, and include factory style plug in connection, and use factory cap and Rotor. They offer very simple and effective adjustability without taking the distributor apart!

Joe when I was a junior mechanic at a Chrysler Plymouth dealership (early-mid '80s), there were still a bunch of BB MoPars still roaming the streets in original condition. Many Cordoba 400-LeanBurns, 440 LB New Yorkers, a few Chargers and Road Runners here and there. One I was always impressed with, was a 1968 Imperial 440. I think it was the T-N-T model, it had chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid with dual snorkles. The owner actually KNEW Walter P. Chrysler personally (from a yacht club they were in), and bought the car up north in late 1967. I built the BUDD 4-piston calipers (much bigger than a Corvette's) and put valve cover gaskets (surprise) on it, among other things. The motor was spotless inside, and it ran STRONG, albeit with a healthy spark rattle. I ran some MoPar carbon cleaner through it, and fiddled with the timing, but it still rattled some at WOT with 93oct. Some 20yrs later I did a TH400 trans in a one-owner '68 Wildcat for a retired school teacher and it ran similarly strong (430 Buick, predecessor to the 455) with that same spark knock/rattle. Those were the DAYS!!
Woah man! No plastic cars to be found!
What kit do you recommend for lean burn delete on 1978 Chrysler 400 engine?
@@belloa3026 I would get a non-Lean Burn Thermoquad from an earlier 400 (or 440) and obtain a reman or good used 383/400 points distributor and add a Pertronix Ignitor conversion kit to it.
Very clean under the hood for it’s age.
Diggin' that old carb.......
It’s a solid old rig
Also run same exact set up in a 66 satellite with a warmed over 383 , with the FBO box nice little set up easy rev limit adjustments also.
Yes sir. Love the FBO stuff. They made me a dealer.
Very nice Joe what's your email?
Great video Joe! Only problem was we couldn't see the engine because of that huge AC compressor. Taking that out should pick up another 4 seconds in the quarter. 😁
Haha! The sweet air needs a little work too.
Awesome ignition setup Joe!👍
Thanks Mitch!
Great vid Sir...the electronic swap makes a world of difference to these old girls... even the one I did in the slant made it turn a tyre with ease...lol...I mean eerrr perform a lot better on the street.. Thanks for sharing
Right on! Thanks Aaron!
I have a 85 d150 and your videos are always very helpful, will definitely be ordering a box and new distributor.
Great to hear!
Probably the best mod ever. Points were so bad.
Thanks Mr. Rick. I have to agree
Very Educational Joe.
I like the FBO box, very simple install.
The distributor looks definitely like a top of the line upgrade.
That Fury is definitely a cruiser.
They had a good man doing the work.
Fixing the rear end and tune up and timing issues really brought this car to the next level.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care, Ed.
Thanks, Ed!
I really like that distributor, it’s pretty sweet. I have to check out that 4 seconds flat article about reading plugs. Didn’t want to mention it but am I the only one who noticed the pcv hose was off the carb at first when you were trying to start it after install?
Camera magic in the UA-cam world. Check out that plug article. It has some good nuggets
Another good show. You explain things well enough for anyone to understand. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated!
Great timing and spark plug reading info Joe - thanks! My 440 equipped 66 Coronet convertible is up in the air for chassis reinforcement. (top down with both doors open reveals the rocker panels and floor pan is all that holds the car together) Your videos are making my right foot itch.
Glad it helped! Mopar to the front!
That sounds much better!!
Thanks brother
She runs out nice 👍🏻
Yes sir 👍🏼
Nice video, Joe! Amazing how those big cars would just cruise with the big blocks! You must have some nice highway (2.76) gears in that ole girl! Love the big blocks!
Thanks brother. I actually swapped 2.76’s out for 2.94’s last video. But it has 235/75’s all around.
I'm gonna go with 3.23's in my Challenger after the engine sway. @@JustMoparJoe
440 powered C body luxury muscle car 😎
Yea buddy!
The flat world 🌎🌍 people should be shimmin in any moment now l😊 You said flat land 😁 so. Anyway, great video and thanks for clarifying how to set up the FBO IGNITION.
Haha! Don’t tell them to look at the shadow on the 🌙
Good choice in plugs . I run NGK all the time in mopars and jeeps . Also try the NGK plugs for 2000 + jeep cherokee 4.0 the porcelain tower and ground electrode is taller but wont interfere with pistons or valves. it move the spark more towards the middle of pistion and away from head incase of arcing . Tall John did a test in his slant6 and the plugs put out less emissions out the pipes
Tall John is the man! I sent him a plug picture during making this video.
I'v been running the firecore dist.and coil with the rev-n-nator box on my 71 383 Roadrunner with no problems. Funny, havn't heard of fbo😎
Oh man! Check out FBO next time. I have only had great dealings with them. Check out the website or give them a call if you need one. Simple, effective, and 5 year warranty.
@@JustMoparJoe 😎
running good !!!!!!! Joe-in-a-Fury!
Thanks, Tim!
Great work! Nice car!
Thanks brother
I bought a firecore distributor to replace the crappy proform distributor (cap has tons of play in relation to distributor body, moves all over the place)on my newly rebuilt 440. Looks like a very nice piece, although i have yet to install it.
Excellent! I love the adjustability. Check your air gap on the pickup after install. I had to tighten mine a bit
@@JustMoparJoe will do, thanks!
I would put money on it, that someone dropped that #5 putting it in, which closed the gap, reached down, found it, and then successfully installed it lol...Ive found them like that before also.
For sure! Or they burned themselves on those manifolds. I have a forearm tattoo that I didn’t sign up for!
@JustMoparJoe Lol...I have one also
Good stuff!
Thanks brother
"BOOM"! Lol! A chick & I have a lil inside joke goin with "BOOM". Makes me chuckle when I hear it. Anyway, Not sure what speedo app u have on ur phone? I use "usslisys speedometer" & I like it alot. It has a option to measure 1/4 mile time, 0-60 time, ,& 0-100 time. I've found it to be fairly accurate. One real difference from a real world run is u don't have to react to a tree. U just go, and it detects ur moving. I have a 4700 lbs 71 f100 4x4 pickup with a 390 & 4 gear & with a easy loanch as to not dump the clutch to tear stuff up it has ran a 15.3 at 95mph witch I thought was pretty good! It has 4.11 gears so I'm ready to back out of it by the end! It is wound up!!! But good fun! Have good day sir!
That’d be a cool old truck. My grandpa was a ford man. He had a 77 wrecker and 74 tow truck. They outlasted him!
You should try a vac advance setup on a performance cam.
I’m working through it now, theres some twists along the way.
Andy Wood swears by it
Any of those parts interchangeable with oe from what I saw they sure looked like oe compatible
The cap and rotor are stock options. The pickup coil in the distributor unplugs and can be changed with removing the distributor.
I never bother putting the engine on number one when swapping a working distributor in a running engine. Just make a note of where the rotor is pointing, (can only point two ways on a Mopar) and put the vacuum can in pointing the same way. (I know you know that Joe, have to follow directions doing a how to video)
Thanks Brother. I like to do it this way, because it’s the number one question that people ask me via email, text, messenger, Instagram, and TikTok 😂. I can send them the video link and say it’s shown there 👍🏼
@JustMoparJoe Yup, few things cause more confusion than getting a distributor in right.
Are those gauges accurate? Seems like it is over charging🧐 at any rate that timing mark was with out timing advance? Seems excessive. Thoughts? 🚒👍
I’m not sure on the accuracy of the ammeter. The battery was weak from the car being cranked and cranked (rather than priming it with fuel). I charged it overnight and it looks nicer now. As for timing, I’m not certain that the balancer marks are accurate. But I can be sure that what the amount of mechanical advance is, and the amount of advance that the vacuum added. I was able to drive and adjust both by checking the plugs, running the engine at different loads, and listening for any kind of ping. I don’t think the marks are inaccurate, as one time I spun it to tdc, the mark landed almost exactly on the 0 of the pointer.
We run the same dist in our superbee with the revanator box nice dist , also joe I just installed a summit dist in a friends coronet looks identical in every way to the fire core? It’s ran with a 6AL .
Awesome! I’m not sure if summit sells these distributors, but I really believe in the customer support and they warranty their product. I was excited to try this one in the coronet. It’s like a new car again.
Joe, when i set my mechanical limit in my firecore only one plate would adjust far enough to get me the ten degrees i was looking for. It still seems to work properly with the one limit stop engaging.
Have you ever seen this with a firecore?
I haven’t seen that, but I’ve only had two so far. It is easier to pop it out and adjust out of the car. Maybe that helps relax the pieces🤷🏻♂️
@@JustMoparJoethanks joe, I did have it out on the bench when I adjusted it. I didn’t take it completely apart however.
Joe what Happened for you too get SHOCKED What did you do !!!!! Pls explain thx jb.
I’m sorry Johnny, it’s been a while since I made this one. I have the car back now for a can swap
Better get some gas Joe!!!!!😁
She’s liable to use it now! He said the gauge is a little off too. I just poured in 4 gallons
Good deal!! Was getting ready to load up in South GA. to come get you....😎
Great video Joe.
Question off topic, I'm an East Tennessee boy and I was wondering if you know anyone in the area that is good at setting up front ends on B body's. My 69 Roadrunner is needing some help. I went to disc brakes 20 years ago and put new parts on everything but it's a handful trying to keep straight these day's. Wears bad on inside of tires. Open to suggestions brother. Thinking about a newer upgrade to the front end...
Check out Tall Johns Fun Shop on UA-cam. He has a 69 and is a wizard of Mopars.
JMP, what mufflers are you running? Sounds nice and not overly intrusive. I'm torn between my summit turbo xl mufflers and Flowmaster super 44s
I would guess these are flowmasters. I didn’t see an emblem on them anywhere. Factory manifolds and true duals the entire way.
If your carburetor line was ported vacuum it should not have changed the idle speed when idling when you connected the vacuum advance
Hi Joe, I just added a FRBR-67256 670 CFM Holley Brawler, single pump, Duel Feed, vacuum secondaries, electric choke, 4150 to my 1971 440ci Chrysler New Yorker stock intake manifold and I ran across a slight problem. Where too or what can I do with the coil now? Any ideas Brother would be greatly appreciated. I want it to look decent as I put the car in local shows, so whatever I do with it has to at least be decent-looking. After I get this all straightened away, I'm going like you did with the same Fire-Core distributor set-up. Great video :)
Thanks brother! You may have to get creative with your coil placement. They make a post that allows the coil to pass through the firewall, but it would require a long wire. You may be able to run a flat piece of steel strap to the stock intake bolts, and then bolt your stock bracket to it. Or run the flat strap to one or two of the valley pan hold down bolts.
@@JustMoparJoe Joe,Would it make any real difference if I run a long coil plug wire say from the cap to the firewall? You know instead of the shortie normal one buy some 7 or number 8 spark plug wire and make it to run the distance. I don't think it would lose any juice right? Cause could maybe mount it to the passenger side of the firewall or mount it on the passenger wheel well which neatly to do instead of straight across from the engine like a drawbridge rier loom best neater way run the wire to the firewall then a few feet to the left then off the firewall along to the front side of the wheel well with the wire then do the coil plug wire straight across to the coil to the cap. Think the firewall would be best as could use the factory coil intake manifold bracket just bolt it to the firewall. Then just make up a long plug wire/coil wire to go from the distributor cap to the firewall-mounted coil. Joe what ya think about that lol? Think it would work out and look ok as long as the longer coil plug wire from the cap to the coil won't matter juice-wise. Electric wire not worrying about that would be fine it is the long coil wire which I personally think would be ok to do. Prob be the path of least resistance to do, Easiest way. What you say/think about doing it that way Brother.
@@CutthroatMcRage I would give it a try and see. Definitely use a high quality wire 🫡
So are you using the UR5 plugs? Ive used those in Chevys for years. Would you know if you're supposed to go hotter heat rang or colder for 10:1 compression (?)
Thanks brother. These may be VR5’s. 10/1 I usually go with a 5 or 6. 7 for nitrous lol
👍🇺🇸
Thanks brother
440 POWA!!
Strong 💪🏻
Joe I got this same distributor for my 1978 dodge D150 ,it has a 400 in it ,but when I got it from summit he said I'd need the summit MSD box or MSD ignition box well my buddy hooked it up to the wiring and the summit box ,I told him I thought sure according to your video he needs to use the supplied stuff with the fire core distributor and the box they supplied is that correct and another issue is I have 2 solenoid set up on my truck for some reason ,do u know the reason for this ?
I believe summit was trying to sell you parts. It’s designed to plug into factory and has a much stronger magnetic pickup. I’m not sure which two solenoids you mean? Did your distributor have two pickups?
Looks like it is doing a little over charging
Joe, will this work with the 4 wire ballist? Thanks
Yes it will! Here’s an old video of it. I want to redo this soon with better quality. The Mopar Ignition Solution! 4SecondsFlat.com's HRR688 Ignition Module Installed in a 72 Roadrunner

I gotta figure out my 360 magnum I built, acelorates kinda sluggish for a 10.5 comp motor I retarded the cam timing 4° i think that was a mistake but I did put in a fbo plate all in by 2400 not sure if that needs to come in sooner or not, the converter locks it down at 1200 so kinda hard to get the timing to come in before the converter flash
Can you go with the lightest springs?
@@JustMoparJoe I used both fbo lightest springs been thinking of putting the stock light spring in
Hi Joe, I'm doing the same thing on my 440 with the same distributor but when I line up the distributor to the center of the magnet it throws of my rotor pointing to my # 1 on cap by about a 1/4 of a inch. I can't twist the cap because it has a notch to line up, it this ok?
Yes sir it’s fine. You’re close enough to be able to start it now, and immediately get your timing light ready to set to your preferred initial and total.
Here’s a cool reference video ua-cam.com/video/qhB76rfbxWE/v-deo.htmlsi=rXf3ZHeJaq3hCIdZ
2800 Stall?
I’m honestly not sure. It barks second gear on the shift. So it definitely has a kit in it.

Kills me when American companies rebrand Chinese parts and charge 3-4x the original cost
I can’t verify that. But I can confirm that a American answered the phone and owns the company. Had excellent customer support and supports the high performance hobby by giving a nice alternative to 50 year old junk distributors that are worn out.
@@JustMoparJoe no I can totally get that, do you know what pick up and reluctor they use? Is it a stock replacement?
