ADOreD: Hanwei Li

📣 Video interview with Hanwei Li, ADOreD doctoral candidate, on her research in protection schemes for #HVDC cable systems in multi-vendor HVDC #grids.
“The reliability of cable systems will be a main focus point for the future power system, e.g., in the future offshore HVDC grid,” says Hanwei. “In such HVDC systems, much faster and system-dependent fault transients appear, which could be detrimental to the overall cable reliability if not well understood. “
These transients are particularly influenced by the HVDC protection system, which is largely unknown at this moment and dependent on a wide range of choices and design options, including #DC breaker, HVDC converter, multi-vendor interactions, cable parameters and parameters of the surrounding grid. Hanwei’s PhD project will investigate the transients in future HVDC grids during and after DC faults, the associated cable stresses and the optimal protection system for the cable asset.
Specific objectives include:
💡 Definition of expected transients in DC grids
💡 Analyses of the cable stresses associated with the expected transients
💡 Definition of optimal protection systems for cable assets in DC grids.
Hanwei is one of 19 talented and dedicated doctoral candidates, the ones both academia and industry need to move renewable energy forward. She's enrolled at KU Leuven where she is supervised by Professor @Dirk Van Hertem. On her motivation to join the programme, she says:
“I chose engineering when I was a bachelor student because both of my parents are engineers, so I was growing up in such a family. And they taught me some interesting technology regarding engineering when I was young. So I think I just fell in love with engineering!”

ADOreD has received funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme. Part of #horizoneurope Europe, the MSCA is the European Union's flagship funding programme for doctoral #education and postdoctoral training of researchers.
