There have been periods of time that countries were obligated to sing in one of their national languages. And then the rules changed, and countries were allowed to sing in any language they wanted to. (and I do mean ANY language, my country, Belgium, sent two songs in non existent languages)
A lot of us prefer to hear artists sing in their own language, but... the problem is that for a long time countries that sang in English (or French) had an advantage, because more people understood the lyrics. So in order to stand more of a chance countries with less commonly known languages would sing in English to stand a chance of winning. Its unfair they had to do that, but understandable.
When Måneskin went to Eurovision, people from their label actually told them to translate the song Zitti e Buoni to English, they refused to do so, and went with the original version. (Damiano does not believe that songs would work equally well in both languages, he writes songs for either Italian or English, but never for both)
I dream of the day when, say, Finland or Sweden sends a heavy metal song in, like, Quenya or smth, just to prove a point. They'd win off the WTF factor alone lmaooo

I don't know about other countries but at Ukraine's national selection of Eurovision, language is one of the main topics for discussion. A lot of people want a song in Ukrainian language that will represent Ukraine and at the same time, a lot of singers want to make people from other countries understand their message, like the winner of 2016 Jamala (you saw this part of the song in the topic “serious songs”) she sings about the tragedy which happens to Crimean Tatars in 1944. So she sings in English and Crimean Tatar language to share this tragedy with the world. And I really like it when singers mix naive language with English that it will be interesting for everyone )

The Eurovision rules allow contestants to sing in any language of their choice - even made-up languages have been used in the past. The reason many performances are in English is because they are looking for votes from a worldwide audience, therefore, they choose the 'lingua franca' of English to get the broadest appeal from a global audience.
The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest starts on May 7th with the first semi-final, then May 9th with the 2nd semi-final and May 11th is the Final. It's mostly streamed on UA-cam although I don't know if there is a local block for the US as I heard that it is somewhere on TV (have to check local listings).
As for your question: The reason some countries sing in English is simply that most international successful music is in English these days and there is a reason for that as most countries speak English nowadays because they learn it very early in school. So when you want the people to understand what you are singing all across Europe (and now the world) the best way to get it across is in English. There are still many countries that sing in their language or use their language in songs mixed with English. But that language can sound foreign and the bigger chances to reach higher places is with English (Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule) but about 20 of the last 25 winners had English lyrics at least in parts.
It's on peacock in the US, without commentary this time. At least in the last few years, I'm pretty sure the swedish livesteam wasn't geoblocked, so that's another option but that has swedish commentary of course
They used to sing in their language, some countries still do always, or from time to time. After ABBA's win it kinda became more common to sing in English.
Also the acts are usually chosen in local selections, so it is something that people more or less wanted. But by now, you can basically sing in any language or dialect you want. Germany once entered a song in a made up dialect: Wadde Hadde ...something by Stefan Raab. It was briefly shown in the video too. Stefan Raab also either wrote or produced Germany's 2010 winning song Satellite by Lena
For me I prefer countries to sing in their own language because I like the sound of different languages. But I suppose there's still the same push if they're hoping to have a more generally popular song then they think it'll be more likely if it's in English. It's still the same in the music industry generally which is a shame. Rammstein for example, are still a bit unusual in deciding to stick to German whereas Electric Callboy sing almost always in English.

There are a lot of tips down here on how to watch the final from the USA. But did you know that you can also participate in voting? Since last year they have added the ‘country’ rest of the world for the televotes. It adds a lot to the fun. But do prepare for a long sit, apart from 26 competing songs there’s also a halftime show and a show before the votes are revealed, and that also takes forever. Every country calls in to reveal their votes. Prepare to be watching all evening (afternoon in your case).
I prefer countries to sing in their own language, and with their own style. That said, I understand why a lot of them decide to sing in english. : to be understood by everyone, and streamers/youtubers can analyse the lyrics, etc. It's a way to be popular.
This year our singer (Slimane), who represents France, will perform in french. 😊

It's a good question. In the beginning, singers were singing in their native languages, but later , it became a trend to sing in English, so everybody would understand the song. But now, it's coming back with the native languages.

Yes, there are some very strange entries. But in general, the best song wins eventually the contest. Politics and other things can't influence that. It's a 4 hour event without commercials. Especially the votes at the end are very interesting. if you think a song is really bad or boring, you can go to the toilet. And get ready for the next surprising entry. 😂😂

well yes, to represent your country singing in a language from that country makes sense, but to communicate with the other countries singing in english makes sense. so depending on what your focus is you choose one or the other (or even a completely different language). while i enjoy entries in languages i usually don't get to hear much a lot, i can understand that you might choose english especially for meaningful lyrics if you want to really get a message across since eurovision has no subtitles. but ofc there is also just the typical radio appeal of a song in english. but songs that aren't in english have been doing really well, just look at måneskin (won 2021), kalush orchestra (won 2022) and käärijä (second place but won public votes 2023)

To answer your question about representing their countries. At first I was confused too, that they are primarily singing in english but it turns out, that this is kinda a trend right now and especially at the beginning of the esc the coutries were singing in many different languages. After a few years french seamed to dominate and now its english. Although there are still many countries that don't sing english. E.g. this year: Armenia, France (pls don't sing in english ever again), Albania, Croatia, Lithuania, Italy (such a good song this year
Well, in the first few decades of the contest, you could only song in your native language - like you could've had someone from an other country that sang for you, they had to sing in their language . But it was changed in the 90's , something like that, because only english song where winning ( with the 3 times in a row of the irelands, for exemple ). Since them manly english songs does win, but sometimes they are exceptions . For exemple, in 2021 , the 3 first countrys ( italy, switzerland and france ) where all in their native language .

Imo they can sing in the language they want. But for a better understanding I prefer English. In 2007 I really liked the song from Serbia but could'nt understand the lyrics. Because of the clothes and performance I knew it was something emotional/ serious. But if someone had told me they sing about raking the forrest or the birthday clown messed up I could'nt denied it.😅

Or just check the Full Opening ESC 2011 (There you can see Lena the German artist you saw twice in the video.) He retiered in 2015, but the last months there are huge signs he is coming back. He broke up the stiffiness of the ESC by writing the song "Guildo hat euch lieb" (Guildo loves you) for Guildo Horn in 1998 (28:20). Guido was the first artist who left the stage and went to the audience and "hill".
If you have many free time I would suggest watch the two semi finals and of course the final of the 2014 ESC in Kopenhagen/ Denmark. My favourite of all time and I have seen a lot.😅
Because of some stupid decicions by the German boascaster NDR the last years I stepped back from watching in 2022. But now there are 2 contestants I really wanna see how they perform. 🇫🇷 and 🇭🇷

We have grown up with it, and as much as people claim they dont care, theyll watch and have opinions on something. :) Im 45 and remember some of the 80s shows fondly and the 90s were ok but nowadays its a whole different level.

Australia 2023..Everything's Alright...was beautiful written and heavy atcthe Break..Most of it is more poppy and also melodic. It's hard for german speaking ppl. Well any Singer can perform. They don't have to be Swiss but at that time Celine Dion lived in Swiss and there are an italian, french and german speaking French.
The voting has changed several times, and the tradition in the early years was to sing in the local language, but recently NO country can vote for it's own entry, so it makes more sense to sing in a (any) 'foreign' language! Several countries have also sung in a made up language so that NOBODY can understand! There's a rule about only having six people on stage, which has provoked countries to focus on back-projections of dancers (etc.) Eurovision is in three parts;(37 countries competing): Tuesday with 16 countries Thursday (the same) and then the grand final, making a fun-filled ten hour!! show

Re some of your end of video questions:
The contestants don't really represent their country but an EBU member broadcaster (BBC, RTVE, RAI, etc.); Australia has been invited to take part since 2015.
At first (I mean 1958) each song had to be in one of the official languages of their country. That rule was lifted some years later, then re-instated for like a couple of years and then lifted again till now (I don't think the exact dates are relevant, you can look it up easily). Some songs have been in a made-up language, some have almost been instrumental... Many songs now are in their national languages and have some verses in English. Variations are limitless.
There are no any limitations on languages. There was even songs in fake languages. It is an experience without any limits. Each country choose the song that will represent them each year so if you see the song from France then people of France decided to send it =)

I always forgot, that tv shows that longing for a whole evening aren't a thing in the US. In Germany we're are used to that, thanks to Thomas Gottschalk and 'Wetten das?'😉. But the king of long shows, Stefan Raab, was also part of Eurovision 25:12 and he send the german country group and our last winner Lena. He was the host of many shows here and one of them (Schlag den Raab) were known for longing at least 5 hours, but 7 hours were also possible. 😁
And he host his own version of esc, the Bundesvision songcontest, were the german states were competing.

Hey D, here is some information, since you seem to be interested.
The competition will be aired by national broadcasters in participating nations, on streaming service Peacock in the United States and on the Eurovision UA-cam channel
Peacock will live broadcast the contest this year in the US. You can also watch the 2023 contest on Peacock as well as the semi finals. I would recommend to watch the grand final only. Will be on 11th May at 3pm US Eastern / 12pm US Pacific. Usually the show runs abput 4+ hrs.
For the weirdness: Most of the super weird acts shown in this video had been eliminated in the semi-finals.

I don't think that they should necessarily sing in a local language. Europe is heavily multi-cultural. Turn on the radio anywhere in Europe and you will listen to a lot of English music. But you will also find other non-local languages. Some songs just work better in one language than another.
In the past, the rules said that they needed to sing in their own language. They gave this up about 20 years ago when the contest was nearly dead, and loosening the rules brought the contest back to live.

For fairness you are allowed to sing in any language,
Since certain languages are understood by people outside the native country,
Such as French, English and German, which was deemed unfair,
Especially in the early 2000's when English became a mandatory subject in all competing countries' schools.
That being said a lot of countries sing in either their native language or in English,
However we have seen Swahili and even fake languages compete.
The main drawback is that some artists use English as a selling point,
So they end up being too forgettable to ever have a chance.
Recently there's been a lot of pushback against songs in English,
Manneskin is a prime example of how little the language barrier actually matters,
And we're expecting acts to become more experimental in the future.
(Unless Eurovision self-destructs thanks to how poorly things were handled behind the scenes this year)
Many countries are returning to the idea to sing in their language, especially this year, in 2024, so many countries are sending songs not in English :) in general, this year Eurovision has so many good songs - highly recommending to watch it, it will be great :)

Finally, everything that was very kitsch at one time has today become an advantage to seduce the public, either by making them laugh or by being very surprising, spectacular, or frightening. Now, everyone likes to discover very different worlds. This has become the strength of this great annual show.
Since in the 90's Ireland won 4 times in 5 year en the one year in between England won... it was obvious that you have more chance to win if you sing in English. So the rule that you have to sing in your own language was removed.

In the past it was mandatory to sing in your own language. But it was considered unfair, cause UK and Ireland seemed to have an advantage to sing in English, which is the language of mainstream pop music. So they changed that rule. And honestly: Have you ever heard dutch or german 😉 No chance of winning, cause it sounds so odd to others (just a joke!)
I think the whole 'people don't want to win so they intentionally suck' thing is dying. People still send funny songs but still put effort into them. Even without that, countries are starting to want to be taken seriously among each other. Finally, the sheer profit that was made from last year's Eurovision will show that hosting is definitely worth it.
Whatever is the reason, it's nice for me to see different people having fun together.😍
I don't think it was ever a thing that anyone intentionally sent a bad song. I've watched a few of these 'americans react to eurovision explained' videos and I often go to the comments to point out that that is basically just a myth. I don't think it's very helpful either that a lot of those explanation videos feel the need to point that out as if it's true.
@@uztre6789 Same, there has never been such a thing as not wanting to win, hosting is voluntary and not forced on the winner, it's just offered to them first and nobody has turned it down in over 30 years as hosting is more profitable than it is expensive, plus it's not like the entire bill goes to the host. If a poor country wins then others if not EBU themselves would help them make it work.

The official languages of the EU are english and french. Its no surprise that most songs are in the languages that most people understand. If your song is lyric heavy understanding can be very important.

11:55 that was "the people" winner of last year, he got the highest vote from the public by faaaar, but the juries ruined it and got him down to second place (the final result counts both the public and the juries points, but the ranking considering only the public votes is always the better one because the countries juries tend to vote for many reasons that have nothing to do with the actual quality of the song -all the nordic countries always vote for each other for example). Anyway everyone was so outraged with him not winning that when Sweden went on stage as winner the audience just kept screaming "chachacha" lol (the chorus from green guy song)

English is the most common language - so, why not make others understand you? I mean, yes, you represent your country, but you also represent it in front of Europe and the world.
They forgot the most important rule in the video: Germany gets zero points. Lol, for almost a decade we've been last or second to last. I think it's become a running gag in Europe not to vote for Germany. But tbh well deserved for the shitty "artists/performers" we usually send to the competition.
