Really enjoyed the video. Played a fair bit in my late teens, let it slide and played a bit in my early thirties. Really started playing more frequently the middle of last year. Handicap down from 24 to 14.2 using Golfshake app. Playing with Wilson D7 irons. Averaged carry distances - Pitching wedge 140y, 7 iron 180, only got driver in June this year Cobra Speedzone Extreme 10.5 deg 243 (ave ball speed 150, but ripped 1 at 159 going well over driving range back fence at 250.
That's really solid Pieter!
This was interesting and thanks for doing it, Luke. I've had similar progress with my game in the past year. I've gone from a 5 down to 2.1 at the moment. As I've learned to better deloft the club and compress the ball I've seen some big distance gains, most notably in the wedges, and up to about 6 iron. Well, with woods, too, I guess, now that I think about it! Like you, I also have noticed the spin coming down and ball flights getting pretty flat, which is just going to happen when you're coming 9º from the inside. Great for wedges and, to some extent, short irons, but not ideal for mid-irons and definitely not long irons. But you have more speed than I do, enough speed to get those mid-iron flights up to where they should be with the right delivery.
As a lot of other folks here have mentioned, it looks like you really only need a club or two that you can hit high and carry in that 175-200 range and hold a green. For me it's 7-wood. Love it - easy to hit, easy to work and flight, and it's just a pin seeker. Several people here have recommended taking out 4 and 2 iron, but I think you should keep them in and just add a hybrid or 7-wood to try out. I like having more options in the top of the bag over having a bunch of wedges. I still need the longer irons for a bunch of shots where you need to keep the ball low and punch through the wind (or the trees). I'm enjoying watching your golf journey!
-Dan
Thanks for watching Dan! I honestly fair pretty well with the 4 and 2 iron normally. I wouldn't say I have much of an issue with them on course (just annoying I had a brain fart with them in the sim). I always want to show the honest side of my golf though. And on the day I filmed this, those clubs just weren't working for me
Awesome video Luke, you sure have come quite a long way since you started your channel. You will get longer as you improve your overall play. Keep the grind up mate.
Appreciate Kevin! Will do mate 💪
Great video, and great info for you to know while you're playing. I'm an 8 handicap at the moment and my PW is 145, 7i is 180-185 (although if I really rip it I can get it out to 200, at the cost of my spine). Driver I don't know a carry distance for.
Would love to see Fents do the same here!
Thanks dude, noted 👍
A bit strange how the 4 iron average was shorter than the 5 iron. Perhaps a change to a 4 hybrid may improve that distance. My 4 and 5 irons have been shelved for hybrids and I couldn't be happier with the results
Hybrids are lame. Real men carry long irons.
@@PNW_Sportbike_Lifeit’s about the score at the end of the day😉 3hcp and playing an hybrid instead of irons 3 and 4. Never going back.
I think I was just tired towards the end tbh. I usually hit the longer irons better than that
My 5 wood goes further than my driver by about 30 yards
Nice, Luke! Currently 2.2 Handicap 34 years old going on 94... PW 130, 7i 165 and Driver 270. Aside from the strange long irons we are quite similar actually! Good video
Going on 94 😂 Cheers mate!
Congratulations! Great to see the improvements. Single digit handicap is on the horizon for you. Maybe next season?
Thanks Gary! I'm hoping so 👍
Also have the same issue as you with hybrids vs long irons. Prefer irons. I connect better and just love that raking low ball flight that just doesn't deviate and rolls for a while with a 4 iron vs a high floaty one with a hybrid.
Totally! My 3 hybrid looks like a PW most of the time 😂
Enjoyed looking at your distances. I am 57 and 14.8 and hit pw 120yds, 7iron 150yds and driver 220yds
Cheers Mark 👍
Very interesting video Luke, I am in my mid 50’s and just getting back into golf after a nearly 20 year hiatus. Within a yard or two I am hitting almost the same distances as you were in May 22. I can't see me getting down to a 12 handicap, at my best I was a 15, I would love to just get back to that.....
You never know Andrew, the game hooks you in 😂 Thanks for watching mate!
Really just started playing golf and looking at handicaps, but really enjoying your channel and journey. I'm 46, at about 19.1 handicap. 58 wedge goes about 60m(65y?) 52 goes 80m(90y), PW about 100m (110y), 7 iron about 125m (135-140y), 5 iron about 150m(165y?), 4H about 170m (190y?), 3W about 180m(200ish yard?), driver 210m (230?). When I really get one good you can add about 10% more to each, but consistency is important!
Totally agree Stephen! No point it going 10% further if it's heading for the trees haha
Really interesting Luke. Those mid to shorter irons have improved considerably. Longer irons not quite there for you on this day. Overall continued improvement and that’s reflected out on the course. Good idea to monitor the changes 👍🏼
Thanks Humble! Yeah that's it exactly, good to see how my game is changing 👍
Love it!! May I know which projector you’re having and the size of screen? I’m trying to build a similar room.
It's a golf sim at a golf club mate so I've no idea
Enjoyed this look into your distances Luke! Great job! Needs some work with the longer irons or perhaps exhange them for som hybrids?
Im 41 playing off 4,2 hcp, PW 140y (45degrees loft) 7 iron 185y (33degrees loft) driver 280y
Cheers Mattias 👍
I'm not progressing quite as fast as you Luke. started out 22.5 at the beginning of the season, and I'm now 16.2. I've also been playing 2 years (with experience in my teens/early 20's; I'm 50 now) I'd love to get to 10 by next year. I also like long irons over hybrids. I like keeping the ball in play.
Spot on PNW. My 3 wood/3 hybrid can go literally anywhere! 😂 Same target for me really too mate, I'm aiming to be in single digits next year
That was impressive!!
I’m 55 and a 19 hcp.
Pw- 110
7i- 140
4H- 175
Dr- 225 total.
Even tho I’m old, going to still try and get strong this winter. Would like just 10-15 more per club!!
Thanks Scott! I'm sure you'll smash it this winter! 💪
That’s quite an improvement…you’re still young those numbers will keep going up…👍🏼👍🏼
Hoping so T 👍
Great video Luke. I find I start struggling in the sim from fatigue by the time I’m up to the long irons 😂 solid numbers there though mate 👌
that's a valid point... I do my gappings over 2 sessions on seperate days after warming up. LW to 7iron & 6 Iron to Driver.
You're going to embarrass me with your distances aren't you 😂
@@UpDownGolf not at all😂 my video is a driver review anyway don’t worry 🤣
53 year old guy. Playing golf for 18 months. Average PW is 120 carry. Average 7 is 155 carry. 4 iron goes 190 carry if I connect. Driver is about 220 carry on a good one. I'm decently happy with those numbers. The thing holding me back on the course is my short game and decision making / course management.
Those numbers are great! I'm with you on the course management side of things too, I definitely have plenty of room for improvement in that area
Hi Luke, enjoying the videos so keep it up 👍
Just been fitted and got clubs beginning of September and only played once and practiced a few times.
I don’t have a handicap but would like to get one and I’m 54 so currently I’m hitting as follows:
PW 120 yds
7 iron 147 yds
Dr 215 yds
Still getting use to the clubs and need to play more 😢 but would be up for a round with you 😁
Clubs are Mizuno 923 forged and Titelist TSR2 driver and as mentioned I’m just starting playing
Ooh nice irons John! I'm sure you'll enjoy those 👍
As many have suggested i would look to try and replace the 4i with a different club as i suspect it launches to low for you which is why you are not getting any extra carry over your 5i. I know some people dont like hybrids so maybe look into a high launching driving iron or a 7 wood. Couple of other clubs to look at are,
Cleveland launcher hy-wood a cross between a hybrid and fairway wood.
Callaway Apex utility wood.
Im 47, hcp 9
Pw 125y
7i 165y
Driver 235y
I'm happy with the long irons usually but by the end of this session I was struggling with them. I might try them in the sim again another day. I can't get on with hybrids and woods. Solid distances 👍
I can't get the 3 and 4 to go any further than the 5, as well. I put it down to too little weight in the long irons. I use a 5 wood instead.
I'm usually good with the long irons tbf, I'm putting it down to fatigue 😂
Looking good 👍
Cheers Jamie! 👍
I didn't take up the game until after retirement at 60 so I have no 'young me' to compare against. At nearly 68 I'm PW 100 to 110, 7i 140 to 150 and D 180 to 190. Variability of strike can greatly increase those ranges! I have enjoyed watching your improvement Luke, it seems quite quick but maybe not to you?
Thanks Dave! It does and it doesn't. I've played a lot of golf in the last two years so hard to tell 🤷
this is great
Thanks!
Well done Luke! Huge improvements, particularly in the short and mid-irons. I remember when you played with Adam from Not a Scratch Golfer and you could tell back then that distance was somewhat significantly affecting your ability to shoot lower scores, with often very long irons on approach shots or even taking an extra shot in some of the longer par 4s. That's no longer the case :)
What's your total distance with driver? Your carry distance seems a bit short compared to your irons (e.g. you seem to be more efficient/get better distance with irons compared to driver).
My distances are very similar to yours, but I'm much less consistent!
Thanks dude! Yeah I recall those rounds and thinking the exact same thing actually. It would be good to play those course again now
Total distance is around 250 I'd say normally (unless I catch a good one). Agreed though, I have often thought my driver distance seems to be lagging that of my irons. Poor technique with the driver perhaps?
Ahh my consistency comes and goes! 😂
@@UpDownGolf Yeh, you need to get back to the US :)
Don't know what's up with driver, but based on your distance with irons and swingspeed-club tables, you should be able to get at least another 10-20 yards.
250 yds carry and 270 yds total distance is definitely realistic. Perhaps that can be your next goal in your golf journey! Keep up the quality content and let's get Fents to do a similar video :)
Agreed! Appreciate it buddy 👍
Feels like a 5h and a 5w might be better than the 4iron and 2iron!
Mind you, you might get some more roll from those long irons in the summer than the slightly shorter irons.
Lovely languid swing though, like it!
Thanks man 👍
Great watch Luke for 2 years that’s not bad mate
Appreciate that mate 👍
47 years, 7 handicapper: P wedge 130-135, 7 iron 170-175, driver 255. Ball makes a big difference for me. Premium balls go further off the tee but irons play a club shorter. Also, my max 60 degree is 70 yards. Virtually everyone I know hits theirs farther.
Interesting you find the ball makes a big difference. Something for me to look at 👍
Also curious are the P790’s what you were using in the previous numbers? As they’re jacked up lofts
Same clubs as last time
Hi Luke great Video 👍, plus great distance gains with your latest data, tips bin the 4 & 2irons get a Rescue 5, & 5or 7 wood, improve your Driving accuracy & distance “ should be hitting it further” with your swing speed, set up greens at 40, 50, 60, 70yards & work on control with in between shots with your Wedges, I rarely hit full wedges, my distance 53deg PW 100yds total, 7Iron 130yds total, Driver 220yds total, swing speed with Driver 79mph, Dickey 9hcp 76year senior golfer
Thanks for watching Dick 👍
very similar to mine, with the only diff is my woods. i was averaging my 3 wood 250 this summer and the driver only a 260. but my 5iron to my 4 iron, is very up and down. IN my head my 5iron should be 190ish and 4 iron 200 and 3hybrid 215. 21.8 handicap here ! myputting lets me down.
Sounds solid man!
I just did my second Trackman range this month last night and looking at my total yardages compared to the range; I've noticed either I'm hitting the ball differently on the course or the range data is wrong.
On the range, my PW carries 80-85. 7i carries 115-120 and driver carries 180ish. Handicap is the max. Coming up on 1 year since signing up for lessons.
Are your numbers longer or shorter on course?
@@UpDownGolfLonger. My PW carries 90ish plus on course.
Odd!
You really should try out a few hybrids to replace that 4i an 2i. My distances are very similar to yours and I can hit my 4 hybrid 195-200 carry
Can't get on with them Lee. Much prefer the long irons. I'm putting it down to fatigue 😉
9 hcp 49 yrs young PW 130, 7i 175, D270. I get crazy numbers when using launch monitors though, 8i was consistently over 180 which I know is rubbish as my course numbers are around 165.
Yeah hard to replicate you 'on course' swing in the sim I found
You need to get a 140 yd club - gapping with the 9 and 8 ? Also I would suggest ditching the 4 and 2 irons and get 5 / 7 wood much easier to hit off the deck.
Thanks for watching Alan
Did you take into account a lot were going left giving you longer distance vs a straight or right ball??
I looked at the numbers the sim gave
I would get rid of the 4 & 2 iron mate and buy a 3 or 4 Hybrid. I reckon it will help you out heaps. I'm on around the same handicap and I can't hit a 4 iron to save myself. I melt my 4 Hybrid and gives a bit more versatility out of the rough etc.. Looks for a 2nd hand Sim or Sim 2 model. So easy to hit.
14 Handicap. 46 years old D-245m, 3W- 215m, 3 Hybrid - 190m, 4 Hybrid-175m, 5 Iron-165m, 6 iron-155m, 7 iron-145m 8 iron-135m, 9 iron 125m, PW 115m 50deg-100, 54deg 85m, 60deg 70m
Driver: Stealth Plus 9deg set to 10
3 Wood: Sim 2 HL model 16.5
3 Hybrid: Sim 2
4 Hybrid Sim (upgrading to a Stealth Plus soon)
Irons 5-PW - P790's (2021)
Wedges - Callaway Mack Daddy CB - 50, 54, 60
Also use the Kirkland V2. Can't beat it for value/quality
I wouldn't as the driver and hybrids never worked for me. Have 2i and 3 I plus a 15 degree utility iron equivalent to 1 iron. Love them, accurate and slightly shorter granted but would never change them. Played last week somebody with a new stealth(700€) and he was 25 yards ahead of me each time with my 15 degree utility iron which cost 300€. Play with whatever works. Luke is very good with his 2 iron.
I can't get on with hybrids at all. I got a 3 hybrid and don't use it. I much prefer the longer irons. I do usually hit them better than this
Must be great to be able to hit a driver - - - - been playing since I was 12, let's just say I've got grey hair now, never been able to hit 1, my 3 wood is a pretty much hit and miss (literally), so I use either my trusty 3 iron, or if I'm in a good mood my 1 iron.
1 iron off a tee, no wind is about 255, 3 iron off the grass about 220
Oh nice! You don't see many 1 irons knocking about
Should you be looking at consistent distances rather than maxing out distances?
Me, index 13.6, Carries - PW = 100 yards, 7 iron = 135 yards, Driver = 200 yards
The number given in the table is the average distance CCG. I just show the longest hit with each club
Maybe stick a 3 or 4 hybrid in there towards the top in for tougher lies in the rough. 5i is plenty long and not sure you need that 4i. I know 2i is an alternate tee club for you. Just a quick observation, but what do I know.
Thanks dude!
Hmmm - See a fitter AND a coach about your 2 iron, 4 and 5 iron distances. Really great improvement.
Handicap 6.6. Age 33.
PW = 154 carry
7i = 192 carry
2i = 263 carry
Driver = 322 carry
I think it was a fatigue thing rather than anything else Mike. Cheers 👍
Great video and based on your numbers and strikes, I'd highly recommend you lose the 4 and 2 irons in favor of a 22*Hybrid and a 5 or 7 wood to accurately fill those gaps and easier to hit. I say tht because you have 9 yards between your 6 iron and 2 iron, that should be much greater. I'm 62yrs old, also a 13 handicap and about a club behind you on yardages thru the 5 iron (my 5h), 4h 185, 5W 195, 3W 200, and driver 235.
Just wasn't a good day with those clubs for some reason. The strike seem to completely leave me by the end of the bag. Thanks for watching!
I'm a 10hcp and hit PW 120m, 7i 155m, 1i 200m, driver 240-250m.
One big difference I've noticed is my lower wedges are much less than yours - I never hit full shots with my 60, but 56 is 70-80m and 50 is 95-105m
I think you add 10% on to meters to get the yards distance so I'd say we're pretty much the same
32 years old, 11 handicap, been playing for 2 years same as you.
PW 115-120 carry
7 iron 145-150 carry
Driver - 220-230 carry
Never tested in a sim, only on top tracer and am using Ping G15 irons SW-5iron which are a bit older but driver is a G425.
Wouldn’t say I’m a small hitter by any stretch, but wouldn’t say I was a big hitter either. Would say yours are slightly above average based on things I’ve seen
Nice Jack! Funny one isn't it, if you believe everything you see on social media then I would say I'm a relatively short hitter. But then I haven't played with loads of people that hit it further than I do. I'd say for my standard I'm probably a bit over average
@@UpDownGolf if you look at the carry averages for the pro’s that’s only like 280/290 for a driver.
There is also so many factors, heat, altitude, lofts of the clubs etc and plus everyone thinks they hit it further than they do (especially amateurs, it’s an ego thing!)
The reality is, the distance makes no difference. You could hit the ball a mile but if it’s not straight then you won’t score well. I’ve actually struggled more with my driver now my carry has increased a bit, the margin for error is less than it was when I was hitting it 200
Yeah I totally get that! I've had the same issue as I've got a bit more distance out of my clubs too
I think my long irons are similar I’m thinking I need a recovery as 180to 190 is missing 5 wood 2 220 then down to 6 170 ish to much of a gap nice progress but mind
Thanks Lee 👍
I'm on the quest for driver distance at the moment and after months/years of trying everything possible (inc lessons) I can't consistently carry it 200 yards. Coming to the conclusion that weight/strength is a key factor and some people just can't hit the ball any further. You look quite strong tbf, how much do you weigh?!
That’s strange, I weigh 150 pounds and by no means am I a strong guy but have no problem carrying 260+ with consistency. Have you tried other drivers? Maybe swapping the shaft? I think one thing that helps me is that I’m quite flexible and “whippy”.
I'm 5ft7 and not particularly well built or anything. As Carson has said, I think a lot of it comes down to technique. You might be too tense or something. I still struggle with tension in my swing
This just shows how much hybrids are needed by average golfers - long irons are hard an inconsistent to hit. Use the tech to make you score better!
I'm honestly usually fine with the longer irons
@@UpDownGolf lucky you 🤣

What is the reason you have 2i in the bag? As many people suggested hybrids all day long after 6i… wonder how many people on your handicap would even consider that club.
Have a 2i and 3i myself plus a 15 degree utility iron, handicap 15. Had a driver and hybrids, never could hit them the same so got rid. The long irons and the utility irons are a game changer for me. As distance goes a little shorter than the driver and perhaps hybrids but more fairways found. My 2i goes 210 yards,3i 195. 15 degree depending on strike goes 225. So very happy. Keep what works.
Pretty much what Oliver siad. I like my driver but my woods and hybrids I never use, can't get on with them. This was just a bad day with the long irons. I get on well with them usually

Quite interesting, you'll notice you swing a lot "free-er" in the sim, look at your long clubs from your recent vids and you often don't lift your trailing foot heel, especially driver... could be on the course you're holding a lot of that power back by not following through 💪
Yeah I think you're right Rob. The thought I hold in my mind on course a lot of the time is to release the tension at the top of the swing (doesn't always work though) 👍

What’s really interesting is your short to mid-iron distances have improved, topping out at the 7. Now is this causation or correlation wrt your handicap? Is your handicap down because you can hit your scoring irons from further out, or is this just coincidence and you’ve developed other skill sets to drop your handicap ( course management, chipping, pitching, putting) ?
What’s true to form for us hackers, is that it all goes sideways with the longer irons. You going to endeavour to persevere with your long irons? I know I am because, it’s so “F**ckin’ Men”. Who cares about scores anyway?
Hah I'm happy with the long irons usually Bilal but by the end of this session I was struggling with them. I might try them in the sim again another day.
Handicap lowering - I'd say the increase in distance has helped but I think the main increase in distance has come from improved strike. So those things combined have helped lower the handicap 👍
I notice in your previous videos you come up short when shooting for the green. Maybe take these longer distances with a pinch of salt.
Yeah i'm getting better at that 👍
Bro you need to load right foot properly in takeaway which will give you more compression and distance
Slow down the takeaway give you better balance
👍
@@UpDownGolf was there any benefit from what I was seeing.
Just interested
Cheers🍻
Looks like you can take the 4 and 2 irons out of your bag
