Pulling Nails from Pallet Slats- the hard way and the easy way.........

  • In this video I demonstrate how to remove nails from pallet boards after the pallets have been disassembled. Using a reciprocating saw to take apart pallets leaves nails in the slats and the stringers of the pallets. I have been using a nail set and hammer to remove the nails from the slats for years…..then I stumbled upon the “Air Locker”. This thing is great for speeding up the process of nail removal. Why hadn’t I been looking for this years ago!?!?!?!?

We have been using one of those types of tools for a few years now. We place the boards across the top of a 55 gal drum with the top removed. That way, when we shoot the nails out, they drop into the barrel without us having to pick them up. When we get enough in the drum we take then to recycle.

That is awesome. I tried to do that with a smaller bucket but the nails are really tight in the maple wood that I was using in the video. I wasn't able to get them to shoot out the bottom. I still needed to use a hammer to get them out after they were shot. Thanks for watching!!!

I like Bourbon Moths method of removing nails from pallets. Light them on fire and the gather the nails after they cool off. Very easy process. Seriously, the major issue of working with pallet woold, is you don't know what the pallets have held. The amount of chemical leakage during shipment would surprise most people. Also, most pallet wood is treated with insecticide to prevent insects from travelling and becoming an invasive species.

I like that video too. Some of the pallets that I got when I first started were great candidates for fire wood. Lately, I have been getting really nice maple pallets and the wood turns out beautiful when it is cleaned up. I love using pallets because I can build whatever I want and I don't have huge lumber costs like I used to.

For those who don't have an air compressor and air gun here's another way.
get a three or four inch long pipe nipple of 5/16" and get a couple barn spikes that will pass freely through the nipple. Use the nipple to straighten up the bent nails that are exposed when prying the slats off the runners. Slip the nipple over the nail and bend it up straight. The nipple should be longer by an inch or so than the pallet nail. Grind the barn spike off to a flat end and insert into the pipe nipple. Hammer the nail back. even bent nails can be removed because there is no space for them to re-bend while driving them out. If your doing many boards you can set boards into your vise and use a short crow-bar to pull the nails out after raising the heads of the nails. Put aa bucket under your work and it will catch most of the nails. If you pre-drill your projects with a small bit to avoid splitting dry wood you can re-use the nails on you more common projects. It can save going to buy nails... Happy re-cycling. Just stop your pilot hole a little short so the nail stays tight.

I adapted another tool to do sort of the same thing. I got a palm nailer, and ground down the back end of a nail punch to fit in the palm nailers nail holder. The punch is held in by a wire wrapped around it and the nail holder shaft. Gonna figure our some other way to hold it in someday.
Big downside is after using the palm nailer for half an hour, your hand is vibrated to death.

That was my first thought as well. Hold the nail punch with pliers and wear padded gloves. In fact, if the punch is a bit smaller diameter than the nails it can drive them completely out. I also like that there is no trigger involved - pretty much automatic.

Wife and I are finalizing purchase of new home that includes a free-standing 750sq ft garage (25' x 30'), all steel construction-- truly a honey of a shop, right? Anyway, looking at building a small bar for inside the house-- and I want to build it with reclaimed hardwood. Pallets seem like a likely source, but was concerned about nail extraction. This video solves that problem for me! Tried years ago to dismantle pallets with just a hammer and a hand saw. I got one pulled apart in two days, and it was brutal (those twist nails don't yield much!). Bookmarked the link for that tool, and I'll buy a compressor and hoses to run the thing! The obvious downside is a slightly larger hole left in the boards, but it was not a concern for my application. Plus, many if not all pallet nails are collated. By running the head completely through the board, I have found that the metal is often left behind otherwise is removed fully

My problem is the thick ones which the nails are deep in the slate and the nails only reached half of the thickness of the wood. The nails heads are gone because the nails are trapped in the hardwood and only a small part of the nails is above the wood. Over 90% of the nails are inside the wood. Do you have a better way to get the nails out of the wood? Thanks

    • @trophyhusbandwoodworks643
      @trophyhusbandwoodworks643  2 роки тому

I haven't found anything that works great to get them out when the nail heads are completely below the surface except the nail set and hammer (or the Air Locker). When the nails are buried deep I usually just go about pulling them out as usual and then hope I don't damage the surface of the wood any more than necessary. Once I have all of the nails out of the boards I typically run them through my surface planer to clean up the faces of the boards before building any projects and it takes away a lot of the damage from the nail pulling process. I also get a LOT of high quality pallets and usually have more wood than I need so I don't feel as guilty about damaging a board or two in the process. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask more questions if you have any. Thanks for watching the videos.

  • @stadleroux
    @stadleroux 2 роки тому

Your pallets, and therefore also the nails you're pulling, are pretty new, so you shouldn't have this problem, but a claw hammer will often break off the head on at least one side, if not both, of an older, rusted nail, in which case the 'V' in the hammer's claw won't have anything to hold onto to pull the nail. That's when a pair of pincer pliers comes in really handy to pull the nail, since it grips onto the shaft and doesn't really need the head of the nail, and the farther you lever it over while pulling, the stronger it grips!
Also, for those who don't have a compressor to connect to an Air Locker - funny, the only air locker I've heard of before watching this video was the kind you'd find in a 4X4's diff! - you might want to consider one of Spring Tools' wonderful little nail setters and/or hole punches. They'd also save you a lot of time because they eliminate the need for a hammer and you only have one tool to concentrate on. They have quite a variety of different ones for different purposes that can be bought in sets or individually, so check them out!

Love this video, though in truth I saw this technique a long time ago and bought a similar toolfrom another company. Question: Since you are not using the stringers, why not just use the air locker to pund the nails from the slats into the stringers and that eliminates the need for the sawing the nails? If this will not work with hardwood, will it work with softwood? The other video indicated it would, but i would like your opinion. Thanks.

It depends.....Sometimes I can cut off the boards to get rid of the nail holes and no one is the wiser that it is pallet wood. When I need boards that are longer than the space between nails, I either leave them alone and just go about the project like they aren't there and have that rustic/ reclaimed look or I fill them. If I fill them, I use a wood filler or Starbond thick CA glue with activator.

Hmm. In MY experience it totally takes the nail out and sends it moving pretty darn fast towards the floor. Fast enough that ricochets are a dangerous concern. To solve that I put a home depot bucket with some rags in it to dampen the nails and they collect nicely. I rarely have to use my claw hammer ... maybe 10% of the time.

Also, I don't cust through my nails with a reciprocating saw and metal-cutting blade, I use a heavy pallet buster to pry them apart. So I have a fair amount of nail to feed into the barrel of my nailer and this may help push the nails out. (The force is being applied for a longer time rather than just a super-fast jolt.) Dude go online and look for ways to take pallets apart. The denailer is an old tool for taking nails out of pallet boards. I dont use it because the stringers are super easy to get the nails out by using a 2x4 laid on its side down on the ground and another 1ft length of 2x4 with a hammer. In the same way you handled your nail set punch you will punch the boards off the stringer with the hammer and the 1ft 2x4. It looks like you only work with new pallets so it is even easier to separate the boards from the stringers as time has not had a chance to really set the wood around the nails yet. If you dont want splinters or blisters perhaps a pair of gloves. 🤨

FYI, A tip I recently came across for easy breakdown of pallets is a tool you can make from wood. See Izzy Swans Pallet Pal video on youtube.
He shows how to make a lever type pallet tool from wood that takes most of the nails out with the slats with very minimal damage. He breaks down a pallet in 2 1/2 minutes with one. Very cool. If you do it alot, it's a must have tool.
Just thought I would share a good time and material saving tool and technique from one good Woodworker to another good woodworker from another good Woodworker.

Thanks for sharing. I went and checked out the video you were talking about. Looks like a quick, easy build and that it works well. Have you built one? If so, how does it work? Are you happy with the way it takes apart the pallets?
I have been doing a LOT with pallets the last few years. I have a supplier that gives me solid maple and oak pallets when they come into their warehouse because they don't fit onto the racks they have. They have been a great source for free wood. I just had 40 broken down about 2 weeks ago and have another dozen or so waiting for pick up.

What a waste of money for that tool and the cost of power,
You may have found your niche doing it that way,
When you didn't have to go such a expensive route
Make yourself a simple jig to pry the pallets apart,
You rip them apart on site and don't have to move the whole pallet.
    That's done in seconds.
    At home or in shop.
With the nails sticking up, You can give one smack with a hammer,
That takes 1/2 the time you spend doing it your way.
much faster and flip the boards over, and you can struggle with a claw hammer, or ~
But use a pry bar with a claw hook, and they all come out easily.
doing it that way is just as fast, if not faster, and you don't use and ruin blades cutting through the nails
I do the big pallets as well, and they are done really fast, even the double 2 x 4 ones.
You use a wedge and drive it between the 2 x 4's with a splitting male or sledge hammer, and then you have them separated
a quick wack with a hammer drives the nails part way out, flip the boards over and only a few seconds and the nails are out
Your way is not fast and it costs, power to run the saw and blades, and then your power tool and a compressor, and the power to run it,
