I am from England and thought everyone knew what they're I hope I am actually thinking of sliverfish but they're normally found in places prone to dampness or any wet areas. For us I would say we would find them in bathrooms (if you're not making sure to mop after a shower or something ) I only know this because in uni I had a en-suite and in my halls they often stressed about this for students.

I think she might have meant Palmetto bugs when she said roaches. The big flying tree roaches. I live in Alabama and they get in the house from time to time. But certainly never heard of silverfish. I am mortified. 😳
